COLLEGE NEWS

As we come to the end of the year, the campuses and college will be celebrating student achievement at a

number of merit and presentation assemblies.

I encourage all parents/carers to come along to these events to share the acknowledgements of the

partnerships we have with our local community members.

Together we play a major role in the development, support and achievements of our students.

The College Presentation Evening is on Tuesday December 13 at Forster Campus commencing at 7pm.

I would like to acknowledge staff that are retiring or leaving the college at the end of the year.

Glen Johnson (SC), Chris Williams (FC), Garry Smith (FC) are retiring and Linda Drenkhahn (SC) was

successful at Merit Selection for the Careers position at Bulahdelah Central.

We wish them well in the future.

To all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college, thank you for your outstanding efforts during

2017.

Our students are given wonderful learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom as a result of

your professionalism and passion.

To our community, I wish all a very Merry and safe Christmas.

This has been a very full year for the College Band with the majority of our performances being College

ceremonies and Great Lakes Learning Community events, such as Shine On and the Academic Assembly in

Education Week.

In planning for 2017 we are looking to continue the combined school events to support our future

instrumentalists currently in primary school.

In addition, there will be a “reward” excursion for those in the Band who are consistently reliable in terms

of their attendance at rehearsals and performances, as well as in their ability to correctly interpret sheet

music.

We are always welcoming new members on any concert band instrument, particularly the trumpet,

trombone, percussion, clarinet and bass guitar/tuba.

Selected Band students will also have the opportunity to perform in the Musical Band for the College’s

2017 production of “Grease”… watch this space!

THANK YOU to College Band students for your enthusiastic involvement, and a huge THANK YOU to

parents/carers for your continued support in transporting students to and from our cross-campus

performances all year.

I look forward to making 2017 even more exciting and rewarding!

P&C NEWS

This will be the final P&C News for 2016.

Year 12 students have now finished their exams, and had their Graduation Assembly and function last

week. Many of these students are off already celebrating the end of their school education. Good luck to

them all.

Year 10 students will be undergoing a transition week to senior school presently, and then they will in turn

have their own graduation assemblies and celebrations. Again congratulations and good luck to you all.

For all others, I hope 2016 has been a productive and enjoyable year for you, and that you are looking

forward to a well-earned break. This applies equally to staff as well as students!

Best wishes for Christmas 2016, and safe and enjoyable New Year.

Principal’s Report

2016 ABORIGINAL EDUCATION AWARDS

Congratulations to Alyssa Delve for outstanding Student Participation. Alyssa has been involved in Koori

group activities such as Sista Speak and Drum Beat and William Knight for outstanding student

participation. Two Aboriginal community members were also recognised. They were:

Margaret Donnelly - Award for Outstanding Contribution to Educational Achievement by a community

member. She is a dedicated and committed parent and community member who regularly assists in the

delivery of programs for our Girl’s Koori group. She has brought her community contacts to support the

delivery of culturally appropriate activities regarding Aboriginal culture and customs. She is a positive role

model to the girls, creating a very positive environment for programs such as dance and performance.

Marcus Rowsell is a dedicated and committed community member who regularly assists in the delivery of

programs for our Boy’s Koori group. He has attended camps and excursions, has valuable links to the

regional Koori Men’s group which helps in the delivery of culturally appropriate activities for the Boy’s

Group members which has seen the boys grow in self-confidence, and this has shown through their dance

performances, which are many, within the school and local community.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Carla Pereira-Odlum who has been awarded the Premier’s Reading Challenge Medal this year for her

outstanding commitment to reading by completing the Challenge every year from Year 3 to Year 9.

LIGHT YEARS FROM HERE! This is a GATS Middle School Project that is beginning this week across the Great Lakes Learning

Community.

A number of Year 9 students will be facilitating this program with Stage 3 students from our Partner

Primary Schools. At the conclusion of this program there will be an exciting excursion to Sydney on

Thursday 1st December/ Friday 2nd December (look out for the permission note) and a presentation at the

Year 6 Parent Information Session on Tuesday 29th November at 6pm.

TRANSITION – PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Tuesday November 24 6.00pm - library

Forster Campus welcomed the Year 6 parents and students on this evening.

The Year 7 Advisers, Ms Sally Edwards and Mrs Jennie Summers have been spending a lot of time with our

local primary partner teachers and Year 6 students in order to enhance the transition of students from

their primary school to Forster Campus.

The Student Support Officer (SSO), Ms Annette Whiting has also been with the Year Advisers at the

primary schools. Her role is to provide support and guidance around social and emotional needs.

These key staff members and others were available on this evening.

CONGRATULATIONS The graduation of Year 10 students from the Support Unit

took place with a celebratory BBQ with parents, relatives,

friends and staff from Forster Campus and Tuncurry Senior

Campus.

GREAT LAKES PEARL DRAGONS REGATTA

Congratulations to the student and staff dragon boat teams on their second placing in their categories at

the annual regatta held at Forster Keys on Saturday 19th November. Well Done!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

In the 2016/17 State Budget, $330 million was allocated over the next two years for planned and priority

maintenance works in schools across the State. This increase will target roofs, floorcoverings and painting,

as well as other maintenance works selected by school principals. The Department of Education, through

the Assets Unit, is currently consulting with principals to plan these works to ensure priority maintenance

items are undertaken first. This consultation has already taken place at Forster Campus and works will

begin in 2017. This is in addition to our ongoing maintenance program which occurs every year.

Deputy Principal’s Report

As the year draws to an end, we reflect on the successes and achievements of our students.

2016 has been a fantastic year for the vast majority of students who have strived to achieve their personal

best in their academic studies, cultural events and sporting teams. It has been a great pleasure for us to

watch our students’ blossom and strive for excellence. But it is not all over yet!

Students are expected to attend school until Friday December 16. All classes will be completing meaningful

and relevant work until the end of period 5 that day. It is a great opportunity to consolidate learning from

throughout the year and to extend that knowledge into real life situations.

The Year 10 Reward Dinner will be held on Tuesday December 6. This is an invitation only function that

rewards those students who have positively applied themselves to all aspects of school life and have

shown a commitment to the College Core Values.

We farewell our current Year 10 cohort at the Graduation Ceremony on Thursday December 8. This

assembly will commence at 9.30am and we ask that all parents and guests are seated at least ten minutes

before then. Year 10 students are reminded that they must be in full school uniform.

Our last Merit Assembly for the year will be held on Friday December 9 at 9.30am. This assembly will

recognise the achievements of students in years 7, 8 and 9.

Semester Two reports will be issued to students on Tuesday December 13 during period 5.

We wish all our students and their families a very safe and enjoyable festive season and look forward to a

terrific 2017.

…Is what you would say when you are about to sit down to a Japanese meal with friends.

On Thursday and Friday of Week 6, Year 7 Forster Campus

students did just that when they were treated to a sushi

experience in the Japanese room’s Instant Restaurant.

Surrounded by Origami lights and LED candles, the students took

delight in attacking their meals with chopsticks. Students were

able to choose from two meals: the Chicken Lover’s Sushi

Box and the Veggie Delight Sushi Box. Each meal was

accompanied by Miso Soup and

Green Tea.

Students were lively and could be

heard asking each other about

their meals. The whole

experience generated a lot of

questions about Japanese food,

which we will explore in future

lessons!

On Tuesday November 15, students from the Blue and Green Rooms participated

in a Geography excursion linked to a unit of work titled Landscapes and

Landforms. Students built on their geographical inquiry skills and knowledge of

the local area when exploring Forster Tuncurry.

Students walked from Main Beach to Palm Grove Park stopping along the way at

significant places to observe the environment, participate in class discussions,

listen to guest speakers and complete set tasks.

Students explored the features of our local landscapes and landforms.

They recognised how landscapes and landforms are created and acknowledged the

values and meanings people place on the environment.

Aunty Donna shared stories about our local Worimi people. Students investigated

the impact humans have had on our local landscapes and identified ways to

protect them.

Congratulations to all students involved, as you were a credit of our college. It was

a great day full of learning, fun and smiles.

In Term 4, Forster Campus Visual Arts students were fortunate to have artist Imogen Perry working with them again, when she returned to the school for her second practicum with Mrs Pink.

Ms Perry is a recent graduate of Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) with a specialisation in sculpture, and is now venturing into the teaching profession.

Ms Perry’s expertise was invaluable in the art classroom, especially during the Year 8 Ocean Deep unit, where she offered advice on the construction and finalisation of student clay works.

It was a rare opportunity for students to have a practising artist working with them in the classroom.

In one of her final lessons, Ms Perry engaged Mrs Pink’s Year 8 Visual Arts classes in a group task requiring them to ‘Draw like Picasso’.

This related to the final stage of the Year 8 Heads Up unit whereby students were required to draw a portrait. Charcoal sticks were attached to the end of paintbrushes and students worked in groups to select and draw a portrait as they stood over large sheets of paper on the ground.

Students were amazed at the quality result they achieved and thoroughly enjoyed the alternative method of artmaking.

We say ‘thank you’ to Ms Perry for her valuable input to our lessons and wish her well in her third and final practicum.

During Term 3, a new group of budding artists participated in the Heart 2 Heart program with Donna Rankin.

Ten students were selected from Year 9 and 10 to join the program. Donna Rankin was assisted by artist Taryn Choma and previous Heart 2 Heart student Kitana Paulson who acted as a mentors to the students and assistant to Donna.

At the beginning of Term 4, an exhibition was held for their reproductions of a Frida Kahlo artwork. Family, friends and staff from Forster Campus attended the exhibition and morning tea was served as the girls were all recognised for their

efforts.

Thank you to Lauren Vaughn from Community Health who was also present at the Exhibition and assisted throughout the program.

Principal’s Report

The SRC Induction Ceremony was held on Friday 18th November. I was suitably impressed with the number of students who nominated for the SRC and congratulate those students who have been selected by your student body.

As I mentioned in my welcoming speech - “The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born - that there is a genetic factor to leadership. That’s nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born”.

The SRC is one opportunity that schools provide in developing the leaders of the future. We are here to support, nurture and encourage the development of leadership skills in all of our students.

I would like to thank the outgoing SRC leadership group. Individually and collectively, they have developed as leaders demonstrating integrity, courage, enthusiasm and initiative.

I would also like to thank Mrs Williams, the ‘pocket rocket’, for her enthusiasm and dedication in her role as the SRC Coordinator. She has done a wonderful job and moulded a large number of students into fantastic leaders. The SRC next year, will not be the same without her leading them.

Mrs Doneghan and the English / History KLA recently held a Year 10 60s day. A fantastic day was had by all. Students dressed for the occasion, participated in a number of 60’s based activities and listened to the music of that era. I was suitably impressed by the enthusiasm and energy levels of both the staff and students on the day.

Mr Freeman recently organised Didge in a Day for the Year 10 boys and weaving activities for the Year 10 girls. I was impressed with the quality of work that all the students and staff produced on the day. Thanks to Mr Freeman, Mr Croker, Zane and Mason for your supervision and leadership on the day.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students who are being recognised on the night for their hard work and dedication. It is something to be proud of and cherished.

Finally, thank you to the Staff of Tuncurry Campus for your efforts throughout the year. None of the items I have reported on in this report and throughout the year would have been possible without your dedication and desire to see all students reach their potential.

Futsal Report

On Thursday November 10, the U16 Girls and U16 Boys Futsal teams travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Australasian Futsal Titles.

Both teams would compete over three days of the highest quality Futsal from Queensland and New South Wales.

The students found that the biggest challenge of the tournament would be the heat. Temperatures rose to over 40 degrees in the stadium and the humidity was high.

Even with this challenge, both teams competed with determination, team work and resilience.

We were unlucky not to make the semi-finals with the boys winning one game and only just losing two.

The girls also just lost two games but need to be commended as most of the team consisted of Year 7 girls competing against Year 10 girls.

A massive thank you to all of the parents who assisted with transport, supervision and continued ongoing support this year and for the trip.

We couldn’t do it without you.

Students in Year 10 from Tuncurry and Forster Campuses took part in Transition Week during week 7. Reports from students and staff indicate that it was extremely successful. Some students may wish to change courses. If so, they need to see their relevant careers advisor.

Year 12 students are actively involved in the Sydney Experience excursion. Any student not going needs to be at school as an alternative program will be operating.

If any student is still unsure of processes involved around N determinations, misadventure, illness or course changes can they please come and see me in my office.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the outgoing Year 12 on completing their secondary education and wish them every success in their future endeavours.
