people ever experience. The views will be jaw-dropping, and you will share the waters

with dolphins, whales, penguins, turtles plus many more “locals”.

The event will raise money exclusively for life-changing and life-saving medical

research and acknowledge the memory of Michael Tynan – philanthropist and

businessman.

Many prominent institutions, are supporting the event - including the University of

Wollongong, St George Leagues and Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club, the Illawarra

Mercury and The Leader, Optus, St George Bank, Tradies, Westfield Miranda, Sharkies

and Masterton Homes. Footballers from the Cronulla Sharks and St George Illawarra

Dragons will be putting together walking teams which the community is invited to

sponsor. And this year we should have Cronulla sharks NRL players and support staff

OC6 Long Course Men, Women and Mixed This paddle will begin from Wollongong Harbour, heading North and changing paddlers on the water. Support boats will be allocated per crew and will assist in the changing of crews. We propose that from the clubs entering, we mix up crews from a random draw from a hat if they would like to do so (details of the draw TBC). This challenge will not be a race per say, but a challenging fun paddle for a great charitable cause to kick off the season. (If wind is North East, we will head south from Bonna Point Reserve Kurnell)

A decision will be made on the direction of Travel (South to North or North to South) in the days prior to the event dependant upon predicted weather and wind patterns. We will endeavour to advise crew as early as possible about the direction of travel. Support Boat numbers will be as per the AOCRA Risk Assessed Regatta Rules http://aocra.com.au/uploads/file/AOCRA%20Admin%20/Regatta%20and%20Training%20rules%20Updated%20March%202018%20v2.pdf Buses will be made available to assist in transport to start lines.

OC6 Long Course Alternate Route The Alternate route (if heading south from Kurnell to Wollongong is not an option due to bad weather) we will start at the mouth of Gunnamatta Bay, and will head West, following the course of the river North West past the mouth of South West Arms, turning left around Lightning Point, heading South West down the Hacking River, following the River all the way to Audley. The non ama turn around point will be just before Audley Weir, where paddlers will follow the Hacking River back East, North East to Lightning Ridge, turning right and heading South East, past the mouth of South West Arms, then East until Gunnamatta Bay, where the canoes will make a non ama turn on the channel marker at the beginning of the bay, and a Finish off the Gunnamatta Pavilion Baths. A number of laps may be done, and convenient change points will be arranged closer to the date.

NOTE: RACE COURSES MAY CHANGE DEPENDANT ON WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Charities St. George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation

SSMRF is an independent charity which proudly supports medical research in the Southern region of Sydney with global impact.

Lives can be saved and lives are improved as a result of medical research. Doctors, nurses and medical

specialists are continually seeking better health outcomes for the community.

Medical Research in St George & Sutherland Hospitals will have an impact for your family, your

organisation, your community, your country and even worldwide.

With the support of the Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge & Gala Ball we will be able to fund medical

research at the bedside, such as:

Brain Trauma from strokes and any head related accidents

Allergies, inflammation and skin diseases

Ageing diseases such as arthritis, lung and heart disease

We see our support of The St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation a commitment to make a

difference to achieve better health outcomes for our local hospitals and community.

Madeline Tynan has taken on the SSMRF Beachside Dash numerous times and the Kokoda Trail both in

QLD and Kokoda itself and now her and her family continue to support SSMRF with the Michael Tynan

University of Wollongong (UOW)

The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a leader in health and medical research, and is committed to

addressing global and regional health challenges by delivering innovative and quality healthcare. The

challenge of eradicating illnesses and finding better delivery methods that place the patient’s needs first

as well as reducing costs are at the forefront of UOW’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy. We will harness our

own and our partners’ expertise in health and medical research with a strong focus on innovative future

models for delivering quality research and clinical services which are supported by a skilled and agile

health workforce for tomorrow.

Molecular and life sciences research

Molecular Horizons will be a world leading research facility dedicated to delivering scientific discovery to

help us understand how life works at a molecular level and solve some of the biggest health challenges

facing the world. Antimicrobial resistance is one of these challenges and occurs when a microorganism

becomes resistant to antimicrobial medicine, such as an antibiotic. Through Molecular Horizons, UOW

will help to develop new drugs to fight diseases.

MIND the GaP

The MIND the GaP initiative will deliver improved mental wellbeing for the community in the Shoalhaven

region through research, community outreach and in training future health practitioners. MIND the GaP

allows us to make real inroads into addressing mental health issues for vulnerable groups, such as

adolescents, the Aboriginal population, high risk occupations and people from low socio-economic

backgrounds.

UOW Biopen

UOW has been investing in 3D bioprinting for almost a decade and the team is able to build replacement

body parts using living cells. To do this we have to design new printer heads, new types of bioinks, new

delivery technologies and new types of scaffolding materials. Visit www.uow.edu.au

Marshalling All paddlers will need to be checked off by a Marshall during the following times: Saturday, 20 October 2018 from:

5.00am – 5.30am (Wollongong Harbour) TBC PADDLERS MUST ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING PROTOCOL SO THAT WE CAN DETERMINE HOW MANY CRAFT START EACH RACE AND THEN ENSURE THAT ALL CRAFT ARE ACCOUNTED FOR AT THE FINISH OF EACH RACE:

1. All paddlers must sign on at the sign on desk PRIOR TO EACH RACE before entering the beach marshalling area.

2. All Paddlers must enter the beach through the marshalling area (the Marshall will tick you off the race list and ensure that all compulsory items are accounted for).

3. All paddlers must return to the beach through the marshalling area (where they will again be checked off the race list).

4. Paddlers who fail to enter the beach via the marshalling area will be issued a DNS result.

All competitors are responsible to ensure that their craft is suitable for all possible conditions. All canoes may be subjected to scrutineering to ensure their seaworthiness. Support Boats are there to ensure your safety. All paddlers MUST obey directives of support boat personnel.

Compulsory Items for each Paddler Every canoe must have a PFD for each paddler in their canoe in accordance with AOCRA Regatta Race Rules and NSW Maritime Laws and Regulations. All canoes must have a spare paddle, storm covers, a tow rope and two bailers, which will be checked prior to starting. Every canoe must also have a mobile phone in a water proof case and/or a flare and will be fitted with YACHT BOT GPS tracking devices. We encourage all paddlers to wear their club colours where possible.

Important Information Late entry fees of $30 will be enforced. This will be donated to the above Charities. The organisation of the challenge requires the commitment of substantial funds and organisational commitments by AOCRA, COCC, MTMC and others, it is therefore necessary to enforce a NO REFUND policy. Participants must wear their allocated race shirt for ease of identification. PFDs ARE COMPULSORY. THE RACE DIRECTOR MAY AT HIS DISCRETION, DEPENDING ON CONDITIONS ON THE DAY, ENFORCE THE WEARING OF PFDS. This is an open water event which, includes potential negotiation of surf breaks and Bomboras (“Bommies”) in parts of the long course event. The event requires all paddlers to have a good level of experience and competence in open water conditions. We recommend that all competitors use sunscreen and sun protection for the race. Further, we recommend that all competitors ensure they are hydrated and carry enough water and any food/energy bars/goo packs as they believe necessary for the duration of a race.
