Location. Knowing the place and time of your wedding will help focus your search. Will you be having a daytime ceremony on the beach? You can rule out ball gowns with long trains and dramatic embellishments. Exchanging vows in a candlelit cathedral? Avoid short slip dresses or anything that looks like it could be worn to a cocktail party. Most fabrics are suitable year-round, but some, like linen and organdy, are more appropriate for warm weather, while velvet and brocade are best left for winter.

Set a budget. Figure out how much you want to spend, and tell the salesperson before she starts bringing out gowns. That way you won't lose your heart to a dress you can't afford. Also, don't forget to budget for accessories, a wedding ensemble, including veil, undergarments, alterations and any other accessories.

Bring backup. Take anything you know you want to wear, such as a special necklace or your grandmother's veil. Boutiques will often provide bustiers, strapless bras, and shoes, but you may want to bring your own. You'll also need the advice of a few trusted confidantes, but not too many. Invite one or two people who know your taste, will be honest with you, and whose judgment you trust.

Focus on fit, not size. Bridal wear often runs smaller than ready-to-wear; if you normally buy an 8, you may need a 12. So forget the numbers and don't insist on a smaller size because you intend to lose weight before the wedding—order the one that fits now. A gown is easy to take in, but difficult and costly to let out.

Keep an open mind. This is the mantra repeated over and over by bridal consultants. So take their advice, even if what they urge you to try on doesn't seem like your style. Some dresses don't look like much on the hanger but look great on. On the other hand, never let yourself be talked into purchasing a gown you're not in love with.

Jennifer was amazing! She was so knowledgable and calm and helpful, talking with me as I tried on different things, answering my mom’s million questions, feeding off my friends’ excitement. We felt so taken care of and special going upstairs and having our own space to 'oo' and 'aa' over things. When I found my dress, I truly felt like she had made that morning “my time”, she was totally focused in and so excited with me. I can’t say enough good things! I only tried on things in the Upstairs Couture,

but even with the designer dresses I thought the prices were modest and less expensive than I was expecting for such beautiful gowns. I really felt so welcome and taken care of, not like just another person you shuffle in an out. I feel very lucky as other friends I know have searched and searched and not had great experiences. -Laura T.

BeautyWhile you’re addressing invitations and picking out bridesmaids dresses, take some time to work on your beauty regimen. Making an investment now will pay off big on your wedding day.

Skin care: Now is the time to start working on your skin. On your wedding day, you’ll be having your picture taken close-up and many people getting close to your skin as they hug and kiss you. First, start a good cleansing program. You should be using a multi-step system: • a good cleanser appropriate for your skin-type in the mornings • make-up remover and cleanser at night • daily moisturizer • an exfoliant once to several times a week.

Drink water: Examine how much water you drink daily. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses daily will help clear up blemishes and make your skin more luminous. Fill a water bottle and keeping it on your desk at work. Have another water bottle with you in the evening. While drinking this much water may be a challenge at first, keep at it, and it will get easier and easier.

Hair: If you want to grow out your hair for your wedding, or try a different color or style, now is the time to talk to your hairstylist and to search for a wedding day hairstylist and makeup artist. Even if you aren’t planning on using professionals, you’ll want to ask your friend or family member for their help now to make sure they are available and willing.

Makeup: While some brides hire a professional makeup artist for their big day, it’s certainly possible to do your own wedding day makeup as long as you take some time to practice. And even if you do hire some-one for your wedding day, you also need to look your best for your bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, bachelorette party, and engagement photos. Most importantly, make sure you feel confident and radiant in your makeup look, so that you can truly be the blushing bride.

Stress: It’s hard to be beautiful when you’re tearing your hair out. Exercise, yoga, and other physical activities will help build strength, energy, and relieve tension while you’re at it. Remember to partake in activities you enjoy. Wedding planning can consume a lot of time and energy, it's important to step away and rejuvenate yourself. Schedule date nights with your partner and keep the wedding talk to a minimum.

One more word of advise, eat a piece of your own cake! You'd be surprised how many couples don't get a chance to eat their own wedding cake -- don't let that be you! If you don't have time to sit down at the reception and enjoy a slice, ask your caterer to save some for you.

Flowers & Decor

Trying to grasp the concept of event decor and what your wedding will look like? Take a look at our tips to designing your big day flawlessly!

Uniform isn’t always best. Be creative and mix and match. Square tables with round tables, some with linens, some wooden, high centerpieces and low centerpieces – keep guests guessing and looking for more!

If you can’t decide on a theme or palette, make it progressive! Start the ceremony off with a delicate and lighter palette and with each additional space you move into, deepen and darken the design for lots of drama!

Splurge on lighting! As one of the most underrated elements of a wedding, lighting can change your space, enhance the ambiance, set the mood and make or break the rest of your décor and design so set aside room in the budget to make it shine.

Don’t forget about the little areas! Dress up those bathroom counters, order flowers for your cake table and do a walkthrough of your venue to find all those little spots that could use something special to wow your guests.

Make your event feel inviting with a residential vibe! Incorporate the use of sofas, ottomans, coffee tables and other welcoming and familiar pieces to warm up an atmosphere.

Your wedding bouquet is the finishing touch to your gorgeous gown. A well designed, beautiful bouquet will enhance your dress and compliment your bridesmaids attire. Don’t skimp on the bride’s bouquet – it is your special day and you are worth it!

Wedding Photography

There are so many traditions, timelines and events that occur during a wedding, from cake cutting to first dances to garters and bouquets to party favors... lets be real – none of these things are really detrimental to the real purpose of the day. They can certainly add an element of fun, but only if they mean something to you. To make this process more focused and meaningful, list the three things that are important to you on your wedding day. Dancing? Photography? The perfect venue? The amount of guests attending? The dress? It’s your day and you and your fiancé get to choose what is a priority. Let those things get the majority of the wedding budget, time and effort. Everything else is a bonus.

If you don’t want to miss a minute of your cocktail hour, schedule your portrait photos before the ceremony. Bonus: You’ll be less nervous to walk down the aisle and your hair and makeup will be perfectly fresh for the photos. Consider a First Look. This private moment alone really sets the tone for the rest of the day, calms nerves, and gives the couple a chance to connect before the moment they are standing at the altar together.

Hire vendors that you like. If you’ve been in a bridal party, you know that a bride and groom spend a majority of their wedding with their vendors. Like choosing the friends you want by your side on your wedding day, you want to choose vendors whose company you enjoy, who you trust, and who will help your day be more fun and less stressful, rather than the other way around.

20

Page 21: Once Upon A Bridal Guide 2015

One new conflict that has arisen is the issue of camera phones and ipads. It's heart-breaking as a professional photographer to be photographing the bride during her triumphant walk down the aisle with her Dad or capturing the first kiss as husband and wife and see a dozen bright screens of cell phones and an iPad or two leaning into the aisle to snap that personal photo for Instagram. These screens will not only be an ugly distraction in the final prints and be an eye-sore for years to come, but most importantly, it takes away from the special moment. If this is something that would bother you, ask the officiant to make an announcement right before the ceremony about the use of phones during the procession and recession (also mentioning that the bride and groom had hired a wedding photog-rapher for a reason, and for them to just relax, enjoy, and take the experience in with their eyes, not their iPhones)

A Thousand Words PhotographyYour wedding is something that can't be redone and once the day is over, the most cherished part, other than the memories, is your photo-graphs. Having those everlasting moments doc-umented is what everyone wants to see and holds close to their hearts.

A Thousand Words Photography is owned and operated by Rachel Waldmer. Rachel is a tradi-tional portrait and wedding photographer that shoots in a creative and unique way that sets her work apart from other photographers.  Her photographs are very honest, a true reflection of her subject and their personality. For every wedding couple, she gets to know you first to begin building a trusting relationship and con-nection to you. And from that she produces satisfying personal photographs that are truly worth a thousand words.

Invitations & SuchInvitation Etiquette Tips

You can never give too much notice. Save-the-dates typically go out three to four months prior to the wedding, but if guests are spread far and wide—or you're throwing a destination wedding—more time is better. No one will complain about having extra leeway to plan. Send invitations six to eight weeks beforehand, with an R.S.V.P. request of two to three weeks.

Be creative but clear. From telegrams to invisible ink, couples are doing fun things with their save-the-dates and invitations. If you're getting innovative, just make sure that all important information is included. For save-the-dates, the names of the couple getting married and the date should be most prominent, along with a note that invitations will follow. You don’t have to name the venue, but if you have a website, save-the-dates are a great place to share the URL.

Titles do matter. If the wife is a doctor, her full name comes first, as in "Doctor Kaitlynn and Mr. Anthony Thommes." When the husband is a doctor, the titles appear as "Doctor and Mrs." and if both husband and wife are doctors, the envelope should say "Drs. Tracy and Luke Stanek." A single woman (unless she's a doctor) should be addressed as "Ms." If she's under 21, use "Miss."

Be gracious in a timely fashion. Thank-you notes should be treated with a sense of urgency. Send them within two weeks of receiving the present to express your true appreciation.

Questions to Ask a Wedding Venue

• what dates are available in the month i’m considering?

•how many people can this location accommodate?

• what is the rental fee and what is included in that price? is there a discount for booking an off-season date or Sunday through Friday?

• how much is the deposit, when is it due, and is it refundable? What’s the payment plan for the entire bill?

• can i hold my ceremony here, too? is there an additional charge? Is the ceremony site close to the reception site? Is there a bride’s changing area? How much time is allocated for the rehearsal?

• is the site handicap accessible? (To be asked if you have guests with mobility issues.)

• what’s the cancellation policy? NOTE: Some places will refund most of your deposit if you cancel far enough in advance (often 60 days), since there’s still a chance they can rent the space. After a certain date, though, you may not be able to get a refund—at least not a full one.

• what’s your weather contingency plan for outdoor spaces?

• how long will i have use of the event space(s) i reserve? is there an overtime fee if I stay longer? Is there a minimum or maximum rental time?

• can i move things around and decorate to suit my purposes, or do i have to leave everything as is? Are there decoration guidelines/restrictions? Can I use real candles? TIP: Keep the existing décor in mind when planning your own decorations so that they won’t clash. If your event is in December, ask what the venue’s holiday décor will be.

• what time can my vendors start setting up on the day of the wedding? Is it possible to start the setup the day before? How early can deliveries be made? How much time will I have for décor setup? Does the venue provide assistance getting gifts or décor back to a designated car, hotel room, etc. after the event has concluded?

• are tables, linens, chairs, plates, silverware and glassware provided, or will I have to rent them myself or get them through my caterer?

• are you licensed to provide alcohol service? if so, is alcohol priced per person? By consumption? Are there additional charges for bar staff? Is there a bar minimum that must be met before the conclusion of the event? What is the average bar tab for the number of people attending my event?

Dells Boat Tours of Cold Water CanyonCold Water Canyon is a beautiful shady tributary glen that cuts deep into the east bank of the Wisconsin River. The Canyon was formerly one of the regular stops on river excursions offered by Dells Boat Tours. Today, Cold Water Canyon is an exclusive retreat for private excursions, parties and gatherings, and is only offered through Dells Boat Tours. The Canyon provides a variety of locations for ceremonies, such as weddings, and a historic stone building for sit-down meals, meetings and entertainment events. Guests can explore the site on foot via a wooden boardwalk that winds through the unique sandstone cliffs, deep into the canyon lush with beautiful foliage. The dramatic scenery provides a gorgeous backdrop for weddings and special occasions.

The historic stone Pavilion on-site at Cold Water Canyon once served as a concession area. Today, the beautifully restored building is a perfect spot for wedding banquets, family reunions, special occasion dinners, meetings and other private gatherings. The building’s interior has been refurbished in stone and wood décor, along with stylish wrought iron lighting that is suitable for elegant or casual gatherings. The Pavilion is equipped with a built-in bar service area and a gas fireplace. It can be arranged for 100 sit-down guests at round tables or up to 140 people seated at rectangular banquet tables. Either sit-down meal service or buffet options are available. Larger groups can be accommodated for hors d’oeuvres and refreshments in a cocktail/reception type set-up. Restrooms are also available on-site. Wedding parties are also allowed access to the site for a rehearsal the evening before at no extra cost.

House of Embers

[email protected]

Since 1959, The House of Embers has prided itself in its fine family tradition. Our specialty is wedding rehearsals, smaller weddings, and a great starter place for bachelor/bachelorette parties. Our philosophy is that planning your wedding events should be fun and stress free. Booking these events with one of the owners, Mike and Deb, makes this an easy task. Let us design a menu for your group from drink to dessert!

Alton Brown, host of 3 food network series, award winning author, and food statesman said it best: “In the end, the rules of hospitality have not changed. In the end, you go into a restaurant or any place where the owner is there and that is going to be a different kind of experience. You are going to be fed differently, better by people who own the place, who have invested themselves in a place. I can walk into just about any restaurant in America and know the owner is here, or not here. If the owner is there, it’s going to be a different experience, and I would say that it’s going to be a better experience, and that’s what hospitality really is.” The House of Embers, where we offer not only fine food, but our hearts as well.

Questions to Ask a Wedding Venue Continued...

• what is the food and beverage cost on a per/person basis? What is the service charge?

• can we do a food tasting prior to finalizing our menu selection? If so, is there an additional charge?

• can i bring in a cake from an outside cake maker or must I use a cake made on the premises? Is there a cake-cutting fee? If I use a cake made on site is the fee waived? Do you provide special cake-cutting utensils?

• can i hire my own vendors (caterer, coordinator, DJ, etc.), or must I select from a preferred vendor list? If I can bring my own, do you have a list of recommended vendors?

• what overnight accommodations do you provide? Do you offer a discount for booking multiple rooms? Do you provide a complimentary room or upgrade for the newlyweds? What are the nearest hotels to the venue? TIP: Some venues have partnerships with local hotels that offer a discount if you book a block of rooms.

• if you really love the site, ask the venue representative to put together a proposal with all the pricing and policies — including the tax and service charge, so you have an idea of the basic cost.

• bring a digital or video camera with you when you visit locations. You can mention each location and its event spaces as you video a site; if you’re using a digital camera you’ll need to organize the photos by location name when you get home. After seeing a series of places it’s easy to confuse them. Having a photographic record will help you remember each location.

TransportGive Your Bridal Party a Ride

Technically, you're not required to provide transportation for your bridesmaids and groomsmen for the entire night. But they're working hard for you -- give them the chance to celebrate without having to worry about how to get around. If you're not traveling to the ceremony with them, consider getting them their own limo or trolley. Once the ceremony is over, duck into a dream ride with your entire entourage for the jaunt to your photo location. By traveling together you maintain control, won't have stragglers, and are more likely to stay on schedule. Enjoy the celebratory, stress-free ride! Then at the end of the night, after the two of you have snuck off, the group can pile into a guest shuttle home or back to the hotel safely.

Take inventory. Does your registry wish list have some gaps? Make a list of what you still need to complete flatware, china or serving sets. Prioritize picking up the most important pieces first.

WEEk THREE

Talk it over. Discuss important newlywed issues like healthcare, finances, and division of household duties or expenses. Be sure to complete all necessary paperwork within the required time frames.

Invest in the future. Every couple should have a joint savings, to which each contributes regularly. Set savings goals together. Consider separate accounts for longer-term goals like buying a house vs. accessible emergency funds.

nurture your friendships. Newlywed life can sometimes generate tunnel vision. Plan double dates, and don’t forget your single friends.

WEEk FOUR

Appreciate your partner. Take the time to tell your new spouse how much you appreciate their support, attention and commitment to having the important discussions and making the big (and little) choices together.

Got through the first four weeks? Congratulations! Celebrate your one-month anniversary and savor your accomplishments. The best is yet to come!
