Once upon a time there was a land that only producedgroundnuts. Desperate for variety, the king prayed to his

ancestors for the blessings of a variety of nuts. His prayer

was answered, and that night spirit asked the king toenvision three nuts he would like his land to produce.

What do you seek?

Which nut will give me the most strength and energy?

asked the king. The kola nut replied the spirit,

presenting it to the king. Before the spirit could utter

another word the king threw the kola nut into his mouth

and chewed on it. The kola nut was extremely bitter, and

the king spat what was in his mouth into the river.

Please may I try the second nut? asked the king, The

kola nut was very bitter so i spat it into the water. Very

well replied the spirit, which nut would you like to try

next?

Whichever one is the sweetest and the most sort after

So the spirit presented him with a cashew. Hurriedly the

king munched down the cashew fruit, but unable to

figure out what to do with the cashew nut, he threw the

nut into the fire.

Spirit, the cashew fruit was delicious, but I could not

figure out what to do with the nut so I threw it into the

fire

Very well said the spirit. I have but one more nut to

give you. Please take your time and choose carefully.

The king pondered and pondered, and after a while

asked the spirit to give him the nut he needed the most

The spirit smiled, and said the nut you need the most is

the coconut. It will quench your thirst and fill your belly,

and you can use its husk for an array of things. Sounds

fantastic said the king, may I have it?

To taste the coconut, you must learn to be patient, andwait for the nut to fall from its tree

After days of waiting, the king came back to the spirit and

said I have waited for days, but the coconut hasnt

falling. What should I do next?

Since the coconut has refused to fall, you must learn to

climb its tree and pluck it down.

After days of trial and error, the king finally mastered

climbing the coconut tree.

At last, the coconut was plucked. The king drank the

coconut water, and ate the coconut flesh until he had his

fill. Not knowing what to do with the left over, he threw

it into the forest.

And so began the legends of the obaland spirits.

Abo, the spirit of the forests in whom the Oba sought

counsel in the matters of public administration.

Agu, The spirit of fire in whom the Oba sought counsel in

matters of trade and leisure.

Mami, the water spirit in whom the Oba sought counsel

in matters of war

Together with the Oba, the 3 sages ran the affairs of Oba

city to near perfection. At the time, no country was

richer, no army was stronger, and no nation was

happier

`

Off all the sages, one was clearly loved and revered by

the people the most; that sage was Abo. His wisdom,

patience, and kind spirit earned him approbation and

respect throughout the land. This in turn, and in time,

drove the water sage Mami into jealousy. As morepeople came to Abo with entreaty, the more Mamis

hatred for Abo grew.

While Abo and Agu thought their apprentices the ways

of wisdom and trade respectively, Mami trained her

apprentices in the ways of the dark arts, and led them

into a battle to destroy the followers of Abo, and take

over Obacity. A long battle ensued between Abo and

Mami, forcing the sky spirits to intervene, turning Mami

and her followers into mermaids, and banishing them

into the rivers of Obacity.

500 years have passed, and with the old ways since gone,

corruption and greed has ravaged most of Oba city. Thesky spirits have since turned their eyes away from

Obaland, leaving Abo to fight his battles with Mami and

other forces alone.
