Welcome

2

We are pleased to present another strong season of shows, including a number that are visiting us for the very first time. Comedian Paul Chowdhry, boxing legend Ricky Hatton, children’s show The Tiger Who Came To Tea, The Adele Songbook and The Bon Jovi Experience are among the first time visitors we are pleased to welcome to the venue. We are also extremely proud to welcome the world renowned Russian State Ballet, with their production of Swan Lake. Accompanied by a large live orchestra, this will be something very special indeed, and I would encourage you not to miss this top class show. The highlight of year, however, and one of the great perks of working in a theatre over the festive season, is our Christmas pantomime! This year’s production will be ‘Aladdin’, and if you have never seen one of our pantos, then I do encourage you to come along. We have established a reputation over the past decade as one of the very best shows in the region, and you certainly won’t be disappointed!

The Princes Hall continues to go from strength to strength, with record usage, attendance and income figures over recent years. Demand for use of our main auditorium in particular is extremely high, and it’s wonderful that this community asset is so well supported.

In addition to the 80 or so professional productions we put on each year, the venue hosts over 800 other events. These include many other promotions by Rushmoor Borough Council, such as our youth theatre classes, workshops, SNAP Discos and tea dances, as well as the many meetings, parties, dances and concerts for which the venue is hired. If you are interested in holding your event here, then please telephone us on 01252 327671, or visit our website www.princeshall.com.

One final thing….this September, Christine Collier, our House Manager and Box Office clerk, will have been working at the venue for 40 years. Many of you will know Christine, and will have encountered her cheery nature and eagerness to help – lovely traits which have defined her time with us. She is a genuine Princes Hall legend, and we are all very proud of her.

Thank you as always for supporting your local theatre, and I hope you enjoy the season.

Enjoy the season!

Welcome to our latest ‘What’s On’ brochure with details of all our professional shows during the second half of 2017.

No, really out there, and that’s not just because of his flamboyant taste in shirts. Milton’s manifesto of nonsense, taking a philosophical look at his life so far and his thoughts on giving this all up to seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? With Milton running for Prime Minister, he poses the question, can we really do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes, we can.

What makes our panto so special?Q: What do you love the most about the Princes Hall panto?

RH: “Every year I get to perform on stage with a wonderful cast and crew, and bring something new and exciting to you the audience. It’s great to see so many familiar faces each year and families making the panto part of their Christmas traditions”

DCC: “It has to be you, the audience. I have never been to another theatre where the audience is so receptive. There is a great atmosphere and something truly magical happens.”

RLG: “It’s great to be in a show that really is suitable for the whole family. And as Donovan and Robert have said there is something about the audiences that we get here, which take the show to another level.”

Q: What’s your formula for a great panto?

RH: “I love mixing up the traditional and

contemporary. There are important rules to follow in panto, such as the bad fairy always entering stage left, but you also need modern references that people can relate to as well. One of the things I always try to do is make sure there is something that everyone can enjoy in the show”

DCC: “Glitter, lots and lots of Glitter!”

RLG: “For me it’s all about the story and how we tell it. As actors we’ve got to take the audience on a journey and we all have our parts to play.

Q: Why do you come back year after year?

RH: “Because the theatre manager keeps asking me! The truth is actually that I wouldn’t want to be working anywhere else at Christmas. It’s great seeing staff, cast and crew and also the audience. It’s always like seeing old friends.”

DCC: “It’s wonderful working with a team of people

that you know really well, from production and the cast, to the crew

and the front of house team. Working over Christmas is always lots of hard work, but it makes it really special to know that you’ll be working with people you enjoy being around ”.

RLG: “I love the family feeling at Princes Hall, and with many cast returning it has a ‘rep’ feel. You can be away for the whole year and then as soon as rehearsals start everyone slips back into their usual role, of the dad, the sister, the funny uncle.”

Q: Rachel, what are you looking forward to most this year?

RLG: “I’m really hoping that I get to fly on the magic carpet! It’s such a magical scene and looking out to see the audiences faces is wonderful. ”

Q: Donovan, are you looking forward to playing Widow Twanky?

DCC: “Twanky is considered the dame of dames - she is such

a wonderful larger than life character. This will be my third time starring in

Aladdin, but only the second time as Widow Twanky”.

With the Princes Hall’s spectacular production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ being included in last year’s list of the UK’s top pantos, we asked our panto producer Robert Hopkins, and returning cast members Donovan Christian Cary and Rachel Lea Gray, a few questions about their favourite time of year…

What makes our panto so special?Q: Robert what can the audience expect from this year’s production of ‘Aladdin’?

RH: “Those that have been coming for the past few years will know our production is very much a traditional family friendly panto, where the audience are actively invited to join in and we like lots of audience response. As usual we are always trying to innovate, and we have a few new additions to this year’s show.

Per-ordering is easy and saves you money and time.Just like buying your tickets, you’ll get a voucher that you can exchange on the day. All these offers are available from the Box Office or online via www.princeshall.com
