I have great respect for physicians who serve as career medical missionaries overseas. Many of them have worked for decades in remote hospitals, saving lives and sharing the Gospel under challenging conditions, bringing glory to God through their faithful service.

As the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse, World Medical Mission not only sends doctors to mission hospitals for short-term volunteer service, but is also helping to prepare a new generation of career medical missionaries through the Post-Residency Program. The program enables young doctors to spend two years at a mission hospital, treating the sick and gaining valuable insights from missionary veterans.

We have sent 61 physicians to serve in 23 mission hospitals in 20 countries through the Post-Residency Program.

There is a story on page 4 about a group of five Post-Residency Program physicians who worked together at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya for two years and are now preparing to serve as a team at a budding mission hospital and medical school in Burundi. It’s uplifting to read their story and see how God is working in their lives, in conjunction with the Post-Residency Program.

In this issue of On Call you will also find reports from doctors who served on short-term trips to Cameroon, Togo, and Peru. The Lord is at work wherever Christians minister in His Name to those who are hurting.

In partnership with Christian doctors, dentists, and medical professionals, we are following Christ’s example: “For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth’” (Acts 13:47).

Thank you for your prayers and support for World Medical Mission. Lives are being saved and hearts changed as we follow in the footsteps of the Great Physician.

Sincerely,

Franklin Graham

D r. Charles Miller has treated hundreds of patients in remote mission hospitals around the world. His skill as a missionary doctor has increased,

but so has his dependence on God and answered prayer. Two children he treated during his recent service at

Karolyn Kempton Memorial Christian Hospital in Togo put both his medical knowledge and his faith to the test.

“There was a small child admitted to our hospital one day named Clementine,” Dr. Miller said. “She was one and a half years old, but weighed only about eight pounds, was refusing to eat much of the time, had a severely distended abdomen, and her mother was giving her three to five enemas daily because she was not able to have a bowel movement. She was so weak that she could hardly cry and appeared like a living skeleton, mostly just skin and bones.”

Clementine was in the hospital for over a month, receiving milk through a feeding tube. “Her mother and grandmother were with her and were very depressed and rarely smiled,” Dr. Miller said. “We prayed for her every day as we made our rounds, as we did with every patient that we cared for.” Gradually, Clementine was able to eat on her own, gained weight, and was able to go home.

“The physical healing was of course an accomplishment that made us all gratified, but the real healing was in the faces of the mother, grandmother, and child. The change in their faces from dull apathy to gradual acceptance and then to joy was the real cure. And of course, during their stay in the hospital, they realized that our Lord Jesus Christ was their real healer.”

Another medical challenge was just around the corner.

“A child named Chakara, about four months old, was admitted near death from an abdominal infection following surgery for unknown reasons at another hospital,” Dr. Miller said. “No records ever come with the patients and the parents are never told what was done. She had emergency surgery for an abdominal abscess and we did not expect her to survive. To make a long story short, she spent six weeks with constant fevers, despite many antibiotic changes, a second surgery, prolonged intravenous feeding, and again, many prayers.”

Chakara’s condition became so grave, that Dr. Miller and the staff ran out of options. “We finally were about to give up and send the child home to die (which is a common practice when nothing more can be done), when our prayers were answered. The child’s fever broke, she began to nurse at her mother’s breast, and her mother began to produce milk from preciously dry breasts. She was finally healed and able to go home well.”

Once again, Dr. Miller saw the healing hand of God at work, in answer to prayer.

“There is of course no proof that these physical healings were done by Jesus through prayer, but we all believe that they were. The real changes, though, were the spiritual ones, in parents that accepted Jesus as their healer in a land where Satanism, voodoo, and dark spiritual practices are the rule.

“All of us are given the ability to pray and God desires this. And although His answers are not always immediately apparent, they always occur in a way that He determines best for us. He hears us when we call on Him and He is faithful, as when He spoke to me one time when I was discouraged with the simple words, ‘Trust Me.’”

The Workers Are Few

Dr. Karen rogers anD her husbanD, Jonathan, serveD at Diospi suyana hospital in peru

It’s Friday night and we are quite heartbroken because there is already a line outside the hospital for Monday morning when they give out the cupos (coupons) for the next week’s appointments in the clinic. Keep in mind that it is very cold here at night and the people will be waiting outside from this evening until Monday. It is so sad to see.

It can also be frustrating to see people that we would be able to help in the United States that we cannot help here. Of course, I remember that for every one that we are unable to help with their specific physical problem, there are many more that are being blessed by the work at this amazing hospital. The lines are sad, but also incredible to witness as it means that the hospital has developed a reputation for high-quality, compassionate care. The resources may be limited, but God is reminding us that He is the ultimate physician and we are merely His hands and feet here.

They desperately need more staff here at Diospi Suyana. There are parts of the hospital that are not in use due to a lack of staffing, so please feel free to pass this message along to any of your friends who might feel called to serve in Peru.

“On December 13, 2010, I was admitted to the ER with a pulmonary embolism (fancy words for blood clot in my right lung). I was fortunate,” Darren shared on his FirstGiving fundraising homepage. “I only live a few miles from the hospital and was able to have my wife drive me to the ER and get admitted quickly.

“There are many around the world that don't have access to simple medical care, let alone access to something like our hospitals where life-threatening illnesses can be dealt with quickly and effectively.

“Through my participation in the Beach2Battleship triathlon, I am raising money for World Medical Mission. WMM supports hospitals and clinics around the world through volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and administrative staff. They also supply facilities with donated medical equipment and supplies.

“As I continue preparing for the B2B, I will be updating my landing page periodically at www.firstgiving.com. Please pray for the doctors and nurses who give up so much to serve so many who have so little.”

i t was no “coincidence” that three young couples—the Faders, Cropseys, and McLaughlins—became close friends. They all attended the same church

in Ann Arbor, Michigan, four of the six spouses were completing their residencies, two were teachers, and all of them felt called to medical missions. Before long they began to sense that God wanted them to serve together as a team. The families even came up with a team name, “The McCropders,” using a combination of letters from their last names.

As a group, The McCropders took a step of faith and applied to World Medical Mission’s Post-Residency Program. The program enables doctors who have been called to medical missions to serve with their families overseas for two years, immediately following their residency.

Each physician was a perfect candidate for the program. Dr. Eric McLaughlin was a family practice physician, and his wife, Rachel, was an obstetrician and gynecologist. Dr. John Cropsey was an ophthalmologist,

and Dr. Jason Fader was a general surgeon. The trick was to find a single mission hospital that had a need for each specialty and facilities to accept three families for the two-year term.

Scott Reichenbach, the coordinator of the Post-Residency Program, made some inquiries and discovered that Tenwek Hospital in Kenya had a place for the entire team. God opened the door, and the team stepped through. For two years The McCropders met the challenges and shared the victories of living and working at the busy mission hospital.

For Dr. Cropsey, serving in Kenya felt like a homecoming. “I grew up at a mission hospital in Togo, West Africa,” Dr. Cropsey said. “My dad is a general surgeon and my mom is a nurse. After seeing my parents’ ministry in Africa, I’ve never been able to imagine a more meaningful way to live life than to serve as a medical missionary. What better way to obey the most important commandments? Love God with all you’ve got, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Dr. Rachel McLaughlin faced the unique challenges of being a physician, wife, mother, and missionary, but found comfort knowing that it was all part of God’s plan. “Long before I became a wife or a mother, I knew God was calling me to be a doctor, specifically, a missionary doctor,” she wrote in the family blog. “I was only 16 years old and had no idea what I was committing to, but there you have it. And I need to remind myself that I am who I am because that is who God called me to be.”

The McCropders' vision for serving as a medical missions team was contagious. Soon, Dr. Alyssa Pfister, another Post-Residency Program physician at Tenwek, was grafted into the group and embraced its plans for the future.

During the two years that The McCropders served at Tenwek Hospital, the team prayed about where they might serve together following the Post-Residency Program and began visiting different mission hospitals. Once again, the Lord paved the way for the group. Next stop: Kibuye Hospital in Burundi.

Kibuye Hospital is in a rural area outside Bujumbura, the nation’s capital. The hospital is also being expanded to include Hope Africa University’s medical school.

“Our hope is that we can add substantially to the health care available in the region of Kibuye Hospital, and at the same time be integrally involved in the professional and spiritual development of young medical students and leaders,” said Dr. Eric McLaughlin. “We feel that this opportunity provides the best mix of the Gospel in ‘Word and Deed’ as it would pertain to the gifts of our group.”

The McCropders are back in the United States, regrouping, coordinating language studies, and bolstering support for long-term service in Burundi, especially through mission-minded churches.

“Medical need has not lessened, nor has Jesus’ concern for healing the sick,” Dr. Eric McLaughlin said. “I pray that medical missions remain a high priority for the Christian church.”

The McCropders are following in the footsteps of the Great Physician, ministering to the sick and sharing the Gospel in remote regions of the world.

“We are honored to be part of the next generation of missionary medicine,” Dr. Cropsey said. “I do sense that God is at work in our generation.”

Please pray for these mission hospitals and consider volunteering your services if you are a doctor in one of the following specialties.

D r. Thomas Robey, a pediatric otolaryngologist from Wisconsin, recently served with his family at Bongolo Hospital in Gabon. Dr. Robey

tackled medical cases while his wife, Jackie, and their five children kept busy in and around the busy mission hospital.

“The kids and Jackie had a full day going into town and getting our food for the next two weeks,” Dr. Robey wrote in an email update shortly after they arrived. “They really enjoyed the market and seeing African culture up close. They spent time in the pediatric ward today coloring and playing with the patients, and making jewelry with the moms. The boys also reunited with some of their friends from last year. Tim joined Dan, one of the missionaries, and made a lot of progress on a fort they are building for all of the missionary kids in the jungle. The younger kids played hide and seek in the bamboo forest for most of the day with no apparent fear of the snakes which are known to live there. It’s good to be young and have no fears!”

Dr. Robey was on his third trip to Bongolo Hospital with World Medical Mission.

“Today we had several reminders of life in Africa and the impact you can sometimes have here,” Dr. Robey said. “One of the surgeries I had today was a baby with bilateral choanal atresia—no openings in the back of the nose. Last year we did the first repair on a child born with unilateral choanal atresia that they had seen. A few weeks ago they had another baby born with bilateral choanal atresia, which is life-threatening if not repaired immediately. The residents said they recognized the condition after seeing the kid we did last year. They were able to puncture a hole in each side and have been dilating the child each week keeping it open until we could do a definitive repair today.”

Dr. Robey was especially encouraged by the skill of the young residents at the hospital. “The residents really are taking their training and changing the healthcare of this continent slowly, one patient at a time,” he said. “I enjoyed having my sons Tyler and Josh join me in

the operating room this morning. We got to work with Simplice Tchoba, a third-year resident from Gabon. He is the first resident they have ever had from Gabon. He is a wonderful resident with a young family who loves the Lord and he is going to be a great surgeon for his country. Who knows, he may be running this hospital some day.”

Trained physicians are desperately needed all across Africa and in mission hospitals where veterans like Dr. David Thompson are retiring. Dr. Thompson arrived in Bongolo in 1977 and helped turn a local dispensary into a 158-bed hospital.

“Dr. and Mrs. Thompson have been here for 34 years and had numerous stories to share with the kids over dinner,” Dr. Robey said. “The Thompsons shared with us that they will soon be leaving Bongolo to start up a PAACS (Pan African Association of Christian Surgeons) residency program in Egypt. What a way to retire!”

“Tomorrow will be our last full day in the jungle before starting the journey back home on Friday,” Dr. Robey said. “Thanks for all your emails and prayers. We are finishing strong!”
