Magnet® Recognition NEBH has achieved Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a reflection of nursing

professionalism, teamwork, and superiority in patient care. With this credential, NEBH joins the elite global community of Magnet-recognized organizations—just eight other hospitals in Massachusetts and 475 hospitals nationally share this accolade.

Guardian of excellence Award® For the 11th year in a row, NEBH has been awarded the prestigious Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award—the only

hospital in New England to receive this honor for 11 consecutive years. The national award recognizes exceptional hospitals that sustain the highest level of performance, ranking in the 95th percentile or greater in patient satisfaction for at least three consecutive years.

Five Stars from CMS The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) has recognized NEBH as a five-star

hospital, their highest recognition. The CMS star rating system ranks hospitals for overall quality to help patients understand and select high-quality institutions for their care.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks neBh nationally for orthopedics NEBH has been recognized as one of the best hospitals in the country for Orthopedics in 2019–20 by U.S. News & World Report. The annual

U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 30th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating patients. NEBH also received the top rating of “High Performing” for both hip and knee replacement, which is given to hospitals that exceed expected standards of care.

Joint Commission In May 2018, NEBH achieved certification as a national center for Advanced Hip and Knee Surgery by the Joint Commission, one of

very few hospitals in the country to achieve this certification. The Joint Commission, an independent, non-profit organization, accredits and certifies health care organizations across the U.S.

Dear friends,

We are pleased to present New England Baptist Hospital’s Fall 2019 issue of Advances, which includes our fiscal year 2018 donor rolls. Thank you for reading!

At New England Baptist Hospital, 2018 was a monumental year. I started my new job as NEBH president and we took the final steps toward the completion of our exciting partnership as a part of Beth Israel Lahey Health, one of the largest health systems in the New England region. The new system launched on March 1 of this year. I talk a bit more about our future as a part of BILH on page 6.

Last December, our Board of Trustees also voted unanimously to approve a fundraising campaign, Every Move is Extraordinary: The Campaign for New England Baptist Hospital, through which we aim to raise $50 million. You will hear and see more in the coming months and years as our campaign accelerates and begins to make an impact at NEBH.

In fiscal year 2018, we raised nearly $5 million to advance the hospital’s top priorities, including leading-edge clinical programs, like the developments in joint replacement surgery highlighted in our cover story, and scholarships for enterprising nurses pursuing advanced degrees, like Lauren Jasminski, featured on page 8, among many other outstanding programs.

These programs are the building blocks of the New England Baptist Hospital patient experience and set the hospital apart—and will continue to do so as we raise the bar for orthopedic care across the region in our new health system, which serves more than one million patients.

2018 was a historic year for NEBH. None of our progress would have been possible without you, our grateful patients, partners, and community members. You inspire us every day to continue our efforts to make musculoskeletal care better for every patient who comes to us for help and to return them to their full, active lives.

I hope you enjoy this issue of our newsletter. Thank you for your support and for all you do for New England Baptist Hospital.

Sincerely,

It was only in the 1960s that total joint arthroplasty emerged as a novel but viable treatment option for patients with osteoarthritis and injury to the hip and knee. Soon after, the orthopedics department at the century-old New England Baptist Hospital was established when surgical pioneer Dr. Otto E. AuFranc left Massachusetts General Hospital for NEBH—and brought his team of talented young surgeons along with him.

In the six decades since, New England Baptist Hospital has, year by year, narrowed its focus to specialize in orthopedics. And, along the way, the hospital’s renowned physicians and surgeons have been involved with seminal developments in the field, from the first prosthetic joint replacements, to improved surgical and pain management techniques, to innovative rehabilitation protocols after surgery. Joint replacement

The evolution of joint replacement

“ the goal is to provide the right care for the right patient at the right time and place. this is the future of orthopedics, where choices of procedure type and setting, among many other variables, effect both short- and long-term outcomes for patients.”— David A. Passafaro,

NEBH President

remains the largest service line at NEBH, and the hospital’s surgeons continue to raise standards around the world by driving developments in the field.

“The surgeons here are committed not only to excellence in surgical technique and surgical outcomes, but equally to improving patient care,” says Dr. David Mattingly, NEBH Berenson-Allen Surgeon-in-Chief, Benjamin E. Bierbaum Chair of Orthopedics, and Director Emeritus of the internationally renowned AuFranc Fellowship in joint replacement (and a graduate of the program). “That patient-centric culture is very important to us; we have an incredible nursing staff, and we all work together collaboratively to develop protocols and programs that we think improve the patient’s outcome, wellbeing, and satisfaction.”

Those collaborations, Dr. Mattingly says, have resulted in significant advances over the past decade that he calls “game changers” for the field—and that NEBH surgeons and nurses helped to develop and prove safe and effective.

These advances include the use of medicines that stabilize bleeding during surgery, which reduces swelling and the risk of transfusion and allows patients to rehabilitate faster after surgery; the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques that have less of an impact on the tissue surrounding a joint, therefore enabling better and earlier mobilization and control of the leg right after surgery; and multi-modal pain management, in which several methods are incorporated, based on each patient’s unique case, to control pain (including anti-inflammatories, injections, regional anesthesia, and spinals), allowing the patient to feel better faster after surgery and participate in and be more active in rehab therapy early on—and which also reduces the need for narcotics.

Dr. David Mattingly, NEBH’s Berenson-Allen Surgeon-in-Chief and joint replacement specialist, says he is excited that NEBH is a leader in integrating state-of-the-art approaches to joint replacement and plays a leading role in the development of new diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitation techniques. Next-Generation ApproachesWe are currently in a new era in health care, marked by fast-paced innovation in biomedical research and in the development of new therapies and interventions to treat—and cure—a range of human diseases and conditions.

While the advances of the past decade have been seminal in the field of orthopedics, Dr. Mattingly says that musculoskeletal care is beginning to incorporate next-generation technologies and groundbreaking approaches that will continue to transform the way surgeons and other clinicians care for patients requiring joint replacement.

“There are a lot of technical things we can do today that we couldn’t do years ago in joint replacement. New advancements that are exciting to me are improved technologies to make surgery even more accurate, like digital preoperative planning and 3D modeling of hips and knees,” he says. “We actually did the first robotic hip replacement in the country back in the early 1990s here at New England Baptist Hospital, and robotic-assisted surgery is currently undergoing a major resurgence as technology evolves.”

Another new option in the joint surgeon’s toolkit is predictive analytics, an emerging field in health care that involves extracting information from patient data and using it to predict future outcomes. As the largest orthopedic

“These three developments, together with improved instrumentation and ever-evolving prosthetics, have made a really huge difference in allowing patients to feel better faster,” Dr. Mattingly says.

“At NEBH, we have received all of the important recognitions, certifications, and credentialing for joint replacement and for nursing because we have standardized protocols and guidelines,” says Mary Sullivan Smith, MS, RN, NEBH’s Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Compliance & Privacy Officer. “This is important because there are some things you can do with joints that produce the best patient experience and best patient care, and if we all do it pretty similarly, it decreases variability, which reduces complications.” Notably, New England Baptist Hospital was recently awarded Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the highest and most prestigious distinction a health care organization can receive for nursing excellence and high-quality patient care, as well as the respected Advanced Certification for Total Joint Replacement by The Joint Commission, awarded to very few hospitals across the U.S.

“We’ve become the leader in musculoskeletal care in New England, demonstrated by the region’s highest surgical volume and lowest readmission and infection rates—but most importantly by the best patient outcomes,” says Dr. Mattingly.

We are Magnet!Magnet® recognition is the gold standard and highest honor given for nursing excellence in the united States—and neBh is now a Magnet hospital.

NEBH is proud to share that we have achieved Magnet recognition from the American Nurses credentialing center (ANcc) as a reflection of the nursing professionalism, teamwork, and superiority in patient care. with this credential, New England Baptist Hospital joins the global community of Magnet-recognized organizations—just eight other hospitals in Massachusetts and 475 hospitals nationally.

To our talented staff: congratulations! And thank you for your hard work and dedication to reaching our goal of earning Magnet designation!

specialty provider in the Northeast, NEBH is uniquely poised to harness the power of this approach and leverage its insights to improve patient outcomes. In joint replacement, NEBH now has the ability to compare new patient profiles with previous patients who have similar conditions or injuries. By applying predictive analytics, Dr. Mattingly and his colleagues will be able to use newfound knowledge to recommend the optimal surgical plans and rehab strategies with better clarity as to the predicted outcome, and will employ a “shared decision making” communication model directly with the patient.

“The goal of leveraging predictive analytics is to provide the right care for the right patient at the right time and place,” says David A. Passafaro, NEBH President. “We would love, one day, to be able to know with a higher degree of probability before surgery that a particular patient will benefit from an accelerated rehab protocol or a special type of prosthesis. This is the future of orthopedics, where choices of procedure type and setting, among many other variables, effect both short- and long-term outcomes for our patients. New England Baptist Hospital is at the forefront of applying predictive analytics to patient care in joint replacement.”

Some things never changeWhile technologies, surgical decision-making tools and techniques, and rehabilitation protocols are forever evolving in the field of joint replacement, Dr. Mattingly stresses that at NEBH, the fundamental elements of patient care that set the Baptist apart have never changed—and never will.

“At New England Baptist Hospital, our culture is very important to us. It’s patient-centric. Patients come first,” he says. “Surgeons would like to think they come first! But all joking aside, in the end, it’s really the patient who is the most important player, and our surgeons are committed not only to excellence in surgical technique and outcomes, but equally to improving patient care and treating patients the way we would want to be treated. It’s just the culture of who we are and what we want to do.”

Dr. Mattingly says that he feels the future is very bright for NEBH as part of Beth Israel Lahey Health and as the lead musculoskeletal provider system-wide. “We have the highest surgical volumes, the lowest readmission rates, the lowest infection rates, and the best patient outcomes,” he says. “As we expand into a new system, we want to provide the entire network with our way of taking care of patients.”

Ultimately, Dr. Mattingly says, he and his colleagues are inspired by their patients daily. He says the most rewarding cases, for him, are the non-ambulatory, sometimes wheelchair-bound patients who turn to NEBH for help. “It is

Retired NEBH surgeon, mentor, and pioneer in hand surgery, Dr. Edward A. Nalebuff passed away in July 2018. Dr. Nalebuff was widely considered an early innovator of hand surgery in New England and a mentor to many generations of hand surgeons in the field nationally.

while evaluating thousands of patients, performing countless surgeries, and publishing important clinical research papers, Dr. Nalebuff also oversaw the highly regarded hand surgery fellowship at NEBH. He often remarked that his greatest accomplishment was educating the many hand surgeons he trained, which helped to establish Boston as the hub of this orthopedic specialty in the country.

Dr. Nalebuff, along with many of his colleagues, also established the Edward Nalebuff, MD Surgical Hand Fund, which supports an annual visiting lecturer in hand surgery and other educational opportunities at NEBH. The annual Nalebuff Lecture is a celebrated event among members in the NEBH community that enhances the expertise of members of the hospital’s medical staff in state-of-the-art surgical techniques.

A respected and dedicated member of the New England Baptist Hospital community for 44 years, Dr. Nalebuff was instrumental in shaping the development of NEBH into a leader in orthopedic excellence, as it is recognized today around the country.

a wonderful feeling to be able to operate and get them back on their feet again,” he says. “For this kind of patient, a joint replacement really saves their life, because it allows them to regain independence and improve their overall well-being. That type of transformation happens on a daily basis at New England Baptist Hospital.”

Why did neBh join this new health system? All moments in time are not equal, and this is a very important moment for NEBH. For 125 years, we were an independent hospital. Although we’ve seen many iterations of the Baptist, this is the most significant one. The health care industry and the business world have changed dramatically over the past decade, and will continue to change. Caring for patients is a very different enterprise than it once was. It’s harder; it’s more complex; the expectations—and stakes—are higher. Across the health care landscape, hospitals have joined to become systems in order to serve patients in a consistent and comprehensive way: in a system, insurance payers, health care providers, and hospitals are all within the same ecosystem, if you will. That is certainly the case in Boston. Today, there are four or five health care systems at work. New England Baptist Hospital joined one of those systems to remain a competitive and viable institution well into the future.

Why do you think this shift in the health care landscape has happened? The impetus today is keeping patients well, as opposed to treating patients when they’re sick, which is how we used to provide health care. Of course, we certainly treat patients when they’re sick, but the goal is to keep every patient well from the beginning. This improves quality of life, first and foremost, and also helps combat the rising cost of health care across the country. Smart people in health care tell us that if you spend some money on therapies before the point where someone’s very sick, you’ll treat the patient better, help them stay healthier, and keep total medical expenditure down. This merger will help us accomplish that.

What is the vision of the BIlh leadership? Our new system provides NEBH with an opportunity to stand out in terms of how we treat patients. We are going to put “care” back in “health care.” It is the vision of the system President and CEO, Dr. Kevin Tabb, and of the leadership at all of the system’s hospitals, to treat the whole patient and make a difference in their health. We need to have comprehensive, coordinated, and compassionate care so that the patient can be seen by their primary care providers, specialists, and others with services that are patient-centric. Unfortunately, most hospitals and systems don’t do that very well. We aim to do it better. In our new system, patient-centric will mean that when a patient goes into their

“The care will be connected and coordinated. This is a big task, but that’s where this system has an opportunity to do something very special that hasn’t been done in New England.”

An important MomentA conversation about the future with NEBH President David A. Passafaro

New England Baptist Hospital welcomed David A. Passafaro as hospital President in October 2018. A veteran government, health care, and business leader, David has been charged with ushering in a new era for the 125-year-old hospital by leading musculoskeletal care within our new system across Eastern Massachusetts. Beth Israel Lahey Health, one of the largest health systems in the region, launched in March and provides care for more than one million patients. We sat down with David for a conversation about his vision for New England Baptist Hospital and the opportunities ahead.

Page 7: the Innovation Joint - New England Baptist Hospital · At New England Baptist Hospital, 2018 was a monumental year. I started my new job as NEBH president and we took the final steps

7

primary care physician for knee pain, they will be referred to a specialist—like one at NEBH—and all of their documents, imaging, and labs will already be available for that specialist to review; the patient won’t have to start all over again. The care will be connected and coordinated. This is a big task, but that’s where this system has an opportunity to do something very special that hasn’t been done in New England.

that would be a wonderful change. What about neBh won’t change in the new system? With all the power we will have in the system’s information technology and infrastructure, nothing will replace the individual, personal attention a patient gets from their own doctor or caregiver. The model of care that we provide at NEBH, from a patient walking in the door, to pre-op, to pre-surgical patient education, to the operating room—that will all stay the same. Our outstanding nursing at the bedside, that’s not going to change. All of the good things that we have a long history of doing—which we refer to as “the Baptist way”—those elements of care are not going to change. Those are the things that made us a leader in orthopedics and it is that model of care that we will share across the new system.

how will being a member of the new system benefit NEBH?As the leader in musculoskeletal care for the new system, we are going to share the elements of our model of care that are different, special, and that allow us to have our exceptional results in terms of outcomes and low rates of infection and readmission.

These are things like physician and nursing education, rehabilitation protocols, sterilization procedures, standardized surgical procedures… All of the factors that make our treatment great, we will share across the system. And, in return, we will have access to approximately 1.3 million patients who are in the network today. Being in a system also provides an opportunity to expand some of our services into new geographies—for example, we would like to take our care model to the North Shore of Boston—while we continue the care at this hospital that has made us the envy of the orthopedic world.

Since this is a publication for donors and friends of neBh, can you tell us what role philanthropy will play in the new system? The importance of philanthropy in the journey forward cannot be overstated. Donor support will allow us to focus on our priorities and have resources over and above the annual budgets to make the program and technology investments that we very much need to stay on the leading edge in orthopedic care. At the same time, philanthropy will also allow us to constantly and consistently focus on how we preserve the best of what we are and chase the future vision of what we know we can become. We are thinking bigger, but we’re enhancing and protecting what has made us a hospital of choice for orthopedic care. Through our fundraising

campain, there are transformational philanthropic opportunities to help us accomplish our ambitious goals.

Running a hospital, especially during a time of change, is a big job. So what keeps you up at night? Greasy french fries. Just kidding! Two things are particularly important to me: one is that the two biggest assets we have at NEBH are our people and our reputation for providing the highest quality care. I want to make sure that as we go into this new venture, those two elements of our success are protected, enhanced, and made better by every decision we make. I’d like to think that I’m going to get that right every time. I probably won’t, but I’m smart enough to know that when it’s not right, we have to go and fix it. We are a small hospital by comparison to others, and we want it to always feel that way with excellent, personal care—but we have to think big. That’s the challenge of the new venture. The second thing is that we have to be willing to embrace that newness, that new challenge. Things are changing, whether we want them to or not, so while we treat every patient the same way we always have, we also have to think big at the same time.

“All of the good things that we have a long history of doing… made us a leader in orthopedics, and it is that model of care that we will share across the new system.”

New England Baptist Hospital has a long and celebrated history of recruiting and training the very best nurses who are renowned for clinical expertise and personalized, compassionate care. Founded in 1896, the New England Baptist School of Nursing closed in 1997, but the tradition of advancing the education and training of our nursing staff continues on at NEBH through nursing scholarships, awarded to talented individuals who wish to pursue BSN, MSN, and PhD degrees in the field. Lauren Jasminski, MSN, RN, is an outstanding nurse working on the fifth floor of the Jenks building and a scholarship recipient.

“I graduated from Elmira College in 2011 with my BSN degree. After working for three years, I moved to Boston and to NEBH. I had experience with orthopedic patients during my first job, and I liked that as a nurse, you could see their progression really quickly—someone comes in relatively immobile, and in pain, and within two or three days, they are back to functioning—and eventually, playing golf, playing with grandkids, working or enjoying their retirement, whatever they are motivated to get back to. I enjoy how the patient population is motivated and goal-oriented; I love being able to help them get through those first few days after a knee or hip replacement, to help them see the light at the end of their recovery.

I knew I wanted to earn my master’s, and after a year at New England Baptist Hospital I realized I greatly appreciated the role of the nursing educators who train us. A nurse educator is a registered nurse who has obtained an advanced degree that allows them to teach nursing curriculum at universities and teaching hospitals, often while also working in a clinical setting like NEBH. As a nurse educator, you can give back to nurses through training in areas like clinical simulation,

Investing in talent improving patient care through Nursing ScholarshipsA profile of NEBH Nursing Scholarship recipient lauren Jasminski, MSn, Rn

or therapeutic communication, to give them the latest tools and expertise they need to provide the best care for their patients. It is my personal philosophy that education yields the best outcomes for patients. The more informed the nurse, the better the outcome, and the quicker the patient achieves wellness. Nursing research is also included in any advanced degree program now, and implementing best practices achieved through research is something that is fostered here at NEBH. I went back to school, thanks to my NEBH scholarship, and earned my master’s in Nursing Education from Emmanuel College. With the scholarship support, I was able

to graduate in three years while working at NEBH full-time.

I received enough support through the NEBH scholarship that going back to school did not hurt financially. I paid some on my own, because my courses were expensive, but the scholarship helped me graduate without having to take out loans. That was one of the best parts for me—graduating debt-free. It also helped NEBH retain me as an employee. It is a great incentive for nurses, and not every hospital offers this. NEBH is motivated to help nurses advance their careers and skills. It is hard to go back to school after you begin working, but the tremendous support from the hospital’s leadership contributes to the culture of excellence at NEBH.

Philanthropy provides the resources for the Nursing Scholarship Fund, and the support directly benefits a nurse by advancing their knowledge. It also positively impacts the entire nursing community and improves patient outcomes. By supporting scholarships, you’re investing in a person—while advancing the profession directly and improving the patient experience.”

“I’ve been tough on my legs my whole life,” says Chris Jenny, NEBH Board of Trustees member and Philanthropy Committee co-chair, grateful patient, and philanthropic supporter. A lifelong skier and runner, Chris says that multiple bad breaks he suffered ski racing as a youngster had resulted in a slightly shorter left leg and, after four decades of distance running, the painful deterioration of his hip joint.

Chris, a former executive at EY-Parthenon and Chairman at Jennus Innovation, says that a surgical procedure at another Boston-area hospital failed to resolve his hip issues before he finally turned to NEBH for help.

“I talked to a lot of people about where they’d gone for orthopedic issues, and that made me realize that the next time I needed help, I’d be going to the Baptist,” says Chris. As he learned more about the hospital, Chris was asked to join the Board of Trustees. “On the board, I got to know Dr. David Mattingly (NEBH Berenson-Allen Surgeon-in-Chief) and his expertise as a surgeon, and then all of a sudden, boom, my right hip went downhill fast.”

After a recent hip replacement with Dr. Mattingly, Chris says he was amazed at how quickly he was back in action. “Before surgery, I couldn’t stand being less active, but just a few days after my surgery, I was bopping around again.”

Even better, he says, the patient experience was like nothing he’d ever experienced.

“One of the things I’ve learned is that it’s not just about the caliber of the surgeon. While that is incredibly important, it’s also about that whole hospital team—the nursing, anesthesiology, the pre- and post-op care, the follow up even when you’re back home. At the Baptist, that team works incredibly well as a system because they do more than 15,000 procedures each year. NEBH is just the very best at orthopedics, and I’m not saying that because I’m a board member.”

Chris and his wife Andi decided to give back in honor of Dr. Mattingly, and the NEBH caregivers who made his patient experience so exceptional, with a $500,000 gift to NEBH to support the hospital’s top priorities, including the recruitment of new surgical talent. Recently, NEBH added joint surgeon Eric L. Smith, MD, FAOA as Chief of Arthroplasty. Dr. Smith, who begins at NEBH on October 1, 2019, is a graduate of the NEBH Aufranc fellowship and a renowned expert in hip and knee replacement.

“Orthopedic health care has such a positive impact on so many people and NEBH is all about excellence in orthopedics, from the staff to the surgeons to the leadership,” says Chris. “Our gift was just a bit of leverage to integrate the latest tools, like predictive analytics and robotics, with the very top talent to help New England Baptist continue to raise the bar for orthopedic care everywhere.”

“Before surgery, I couldn’t deal with being less active, but just a few days after my surgery I was bopping around again.”

Members of the NEBH community gathered at the hospital for an interactive dialogue about spine health featuring a demonstration of MazorX, NEBH’s state-of-the-art spine surgery robot, by Dr. Raymond Hwang, NEBH spine surgeon. Medical Director of the Spine center and Spine Rehabilitation Program Dr. carol Hartigan also talked with attendees about how, when surgery is not appropriate, NEBH’s Spine center offers the best non-surgical options in the field, including innovative physiatry, pain management, and rehab protocols. Dr. Scott Tromanhauser,

chief Medical officer, chief of Spine Surgery, and Director of Research Administration, described how NEBH is developing and testing data tools, including predictive analytics, that leverage past outcomes data to help ensure patients do not undergo surgery unless it is appropriate and will result in a good outcome.

Spine health event attendees Ella Cohen with Roger and Marjorie Nastou, a member of the Rose Society Committee, learned about state-of-the-art surgical and non-surgical tools and protocols used to treat spine patients at NEBH.

Cocktails and ConversationThursday, October 4, 2018

At the home of NEBH donor george Albrecht, supporters and grateful patients gathered for an intimate evening conversation about NEBH spine health initiatives with Dr. James Rainville, former chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Dr. Scott Tromanhauser, NEBH’s chief Medical officer, chief of Spine Surgery, and Director of Research Administration.

NEBH spine surgeon Dr. Raymond Hwang, the first in Massachusetts to use the MazorX spine surgery robot, demonstrated the technology and spoke with event attendees about the benefits to the patient and to the surgeon in employing robotic surgery in appropriate cases.

The Office of Philanthropy hosts educational gatherings and accepts unrestricted leadership gifts throughout the year. We invite you to contact us at 617-754-6880 or [email protected] if you’d like to learn more about our events and Rose Society membership.

NEBH President David Passafaro, Dr. James Rainville, event host George Albrecht, and Dr. Scott Tromanhauser.
