Experiences of a Novice Daffodil Exhibitor

Sandra Stewart Jasper, Alabama

Weldon Childers asked me to write a few words about my experiences as a novice daffodil exhibitor this past spring. I labored a long while on what to say because it always turned into a long story. I finally decided to just say this: Daffodils are absolutely the easiest flowers in the world to grow. You don't have to buy expensive novelty bulbs to win ribbons. You only have to have one daffodil blooming to enter a show. If you want to get your children interested in nature, beauty, flowers, reading, spelling or travelling, show them how to plant daffodils. Don't be intimidated by 'expert' daffodil exhibitors . . . Mother Nature and the weather will put them in their place on a regular basis. Don't be afraid to enter a daffodil in the show

because it's a common variety. Old or new, they are all beautiful. It is a good idea to learn what the judges will be looking for at the exhibition. Make sure your flowers are clean, fresh and don't have any noticeable rips or tears. Be sure to put your name in all the right places on your entry card. Be sure your test tube has plenty of water in it. That's what I did. I went to my first ADS show in Clinton, Misssippi, with my husband and our 5-year-old daughter, Autumn. We enjoyed meeting a new crowd of very friendly people who love daffodils and lamented our recent bad weather. entered the Novice division and Autumn's flowers in the Junior division. Then we entered the flowers we had plenty of in the vase of 3 classes. Tommy wouldn't take credit or let us enter any flowers for him, but he was really proud when the judges sent our flowers to the head table. Autumn had only one 'Jetfire' in bloom and it won the ADS Junior Ribbon. The look on her face when she saw the eight ribbons she'd won was worth all the digging, planting, picking and nervous waiting we'd done for the past two years. She was disappointed, though, because there were no other small children at the show for her to talk to. I hope she will have some company next year. I was actually shocked when my own 'Gin & Lime' won the Novice Division and really jealous that the ADS didn't

have a special ribbon for me. I entered several daffodils and virtually all of them won awards. We had an armful of 'Peeping Tom' and won several ribbons with those, since we also had a vase of 3 each. The next show anywhere close to home was in April in Hernando, Mississippi. Autumn and Tommy stayed home since they had a new batch of baby rabbits and chickens to pet, but Autumn picked and prepared daffodils to enter in her name. I was really intimidated this time since there were many more blooms and I couldn't enter the Novice division. I really didn't think my flowers had a chance against this crowd, but I resolved to put all my flowers in anyway. I'm so glad I did. I didn't win any ADS ribbons that day either, but I did win second to some very beautiful flowers. I gained much valuable experience in staging entries and expect next year to be much less strain on my brain. I did win a blue ribbon or two. Our best flowers were 'Bravoure' we'd bought for $.75 each last fall - we had a big bunch. I entered a dozen blooms and each entry won a ribbon. I entered my mother's and she won ribbons, too. I believe that I'll have company when I come to Mississippi next year. I'll also need a bigger refrigerator the week before the show. I've been reading about ADS' declining membership and overheard a few remarks that perhaps some members

take daffodil shows too seriously. I'm a member of several other clubs that suffer from the same problems. I do want to say here, though, that I don't believe that it is a problem with the daffodil shows in Mississippi. Everyone I met, both in Clinton and Hernando, were as friendly and helpful as could be. I was complimented on the color and form of my flowers and invited to lunch for some very good food. I was able to clerk and learn more about how daffodil shows are judged. I left both places definitely happy that I had come. I hope you all will help spread that good feeling and introduce someone new to daffodils next year. Do like Weldon did and give them some good bulbs this fall. Help them to learn how to exhibit daffodils. Encourage them and their children. That way, when the Southern Region hosts the 1997 ADS Convention in Jackson, we can show off our new members along with our daffodils and world-famous hospitality!
