Hello, onceagain! It is hard tobelieve we areheaded towardthe holiday sea-son and winteralready. Timesurely seems to bepassing at an ever-increasing rate ofspeed!

Lots of exciting things arehappening at the Ohio HolsteinAssociation. The Multi-Breed Fall Salewas a tremendous success with anaverage of $2,597 on 63 full lots. Itwas a beautiful day, and the biddingwas spirited. We had several newconsignors and quite a few newbuyers. We are seeing a trend wherewe are getting more new volumebuyers at each sale. We work very hardto offer the type of animals thatpeople want to buy. Thank you toeveryone who works so hard to makeour sales successful. If anyone hassuggestions for improvements orconcerns, please contact Don, our salecommittee chairpersons or ME!

I would also like to remindeveryone to plan to attend the BarnMeeting and Tag Sale at SpringhillFarm on December 15. There will bean educational presentation by DonBennink from North FloridaHolsteins. If you have never heardhim speak, it is well worth the trip.There will also be FOOD and theSpringhill Tag Sale. It should be agreat day. See page 6 for more infor-mation on this meeting, and reportlunch reservations to the office byDecember 10.

I am hearing that plans are comingalong well for the annual meeting andsale in Sidney, March 8 and 9. If youhaven’t attended an annual meetingfor a while, I would strongly encou-rage you to make plans to be there.The committee is working very hard tomake it a memorable experience.There will be an important election,activities for the Juniors and a greatsale. Please make plans now to attend;we need everyone! Contact the officewith any questions, and stay tuned fordetails.

Following lunch, the featured speaker will be Don Bennink of North Florida Holsteins. Benninkis a former New York attorney, who gave up that life to become a dairy farmer. Upon graduationfrom Cornell, he started dairy farming by renting a 35-tie-stall barn in New York. He moved hisherd to Florida in 1980 and has been expanding ever since to a 2,400-acre operation and a herdof more than 4,500 milking age Registered Holsteins.

Over the years, he has established himself as an industry leader around the world for hisexpertise on farming efficiency techniques and livestock genetics. He led the innovation of dairycattle comfort with tunnel ventilation to enhance production and herd health. His farm hasdeveloped more than 750 Excellent cows, consistently ranks on cooperative quality honor rolls

and received Premier Breeder and Exhibitor recognition. The farm is also know for its intern program that invites internationalparticipants interested in dairy farm management to work and learn on the farm. He has been an early adaptor of monitoringtechnology and environmental protection practices, including research trials of drugs and feed additives with the University ofFlorida’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Bennink has been active on dairy boards; he received the International Dairy FoodsAssociation’s Innovative Dairy Farmer of the Year Award in 2005 and was named World Dairy Expo Dairyman of the Year in 2010.

matter if you’re talking cows or people, FAMILY MATTERS.Following in the footsteps of founders Paul and CatherineRamsey, Paradise Valley is now owned by son Bill and Debbie,grandson Brian and Liz, and grandson Michael and ShellyRamsey and their families. Bill and Debbie’s daughter,Brenda, our DVM, and her husband Nevin L’Amoreaux havebeen a huge part of our operation since returning home fromColumbus 15 years ago. Our other daughter, Jill, has been fulltime at Paradise Valley for 18 years, and her husband CorySmith has been our full-time Jack-of-all-trades for seven years.These four families have blessed us with 13 grandchildrenfrom 15 to six years old.

We have four hard-working and gifted employees. NateNeubauer has been with us for 25 years, Mike and YvonneBoyle for 13 years and Steve Schroer for two years. Our familyhas milked and owned registered Holsteins for fivegenerations and have been 100% registered since 1970. Mygrandparents on both sides milked registered Holstein in the1920’s. Milk prices and cattle prices will be importantcomponents of the future, thus the importance of RegisteredHolsteins. I am one of the most blessed and fortunatedairymen in the world. My wife Debbie was born in Canton,a true city girl, and we have been married for 40 years! For ourfirst 30 years, we milked the a.m. milking while rearing fourchildren. In the afternoon, Debbie turned her talents to herseamstress business making wedding gowns and bridesmaids’

dresses. A supportive farmer’s wife is hugely important in afamily farm.

We couldn’t be more proud and happy that our childrenand their spouses returned to the farm. Our oldest daughter,Brenda, our veterinarian, school board member and churchpresident, returned home with her husband NevinL’Amoreaux. Nevin is primarily responsible for all the milkingcows and parlor and show string. With his contacts in theRegistered and AI businesses, he keeps us up on the latesthappenings. Their two daughters are Lindsay and Lauren.

Our second daughter, Jill, and her husband Cory arevaluable with their ability to fill in and do any job on thefarm. Jill knows every cow. Cory, who can fix or buildanything, is currently building a new silage truck. Jill andCory’s children are Cora, Sydney, Tapanga and Wyatt.

Our son Brian and his wife Liz are keeping up with fivechildren: Emma, Haley, Meredith, Brice and Colleen. I thinkLiz was born to raise calves and children. Patience, long hoursand a lot of love are needed for both jobs. Brian makes mostof the breeding decisions, keeps records and does registration.He oversees dry cows, calving and calves up to bred heifers,and all ET work.

Crops are son Michael’s primary responsibility. Wecurrently own 973 acres and rent 500 acres. We can raise ourown forage and sell cash grain. Mike and Shelley’s childrenare Anna and Will. Shelley has a degree in accounting andtakes care of payroll, taxes and paying bills. Mike and hisfamily live at our heifer facility about five miles from thedairy. Mike can also handle any job and takes care ofscheduling employees.

When thinking about what has contributed to ourmerchandising success, we are very fortunate to have the BellSears family. This family transmits milk, type and calvingease. We have kept most females from this family, which leadsto success on the bull side. For breeding choices, we sort bypedigree from the top families and like to use bulls from VG-87 two-year-olds, VG-88 three-year-olds and EX-90 four-year-olds. This combination usually gives us the milk, type andcalving ease we prefer.

Genomics has impacted our breeding program, becausemore information is available faster. I think it is harder to hitthe target when it moves every four months. I spend a lot oftime on the Internet looking up new sires and looking at salesto see the sires of choice. When we pick a sire that has milk,type and calving ease, we think the productive life and healthtraits will be there generation after generation. We will alwaysregister our cows. Everyone who comes to the farm to buy abull wants it registered. Registration adds value to a herd.

What may be challenges for us is that our city of Louisvilleis growing, and the oil industry is getting closer. These couldbe good or bad.

Registered Holsteins are many. We participate at our District,State and National shows. We also try to attend several sales ayear. This gives us an opportunity to get an idea of how ourbreeding program is progressing and see how the industry istrending. The value of attending sales is to see what isbringing value and is in demand and also an opportunity tosee daughters of bulls we have or haven’t used. We havelearned that milk, type and pedigree are always in demandand add value to cattle.

Another reason to participate at shows and attend sales isthe opportunity to see old friends, meet new ones and spendlots of time talking about Registered Holsteins. We have aNational Holstein Fieldman, Glen Sageser, who stops by withnew information and what is going on at the NationalHolstein Association.

While attending shows, sales or meetings, we enjoy thecomments generated by our Ohio Holstein News ads. The adthat generated the most comments was our Grandma cow,

His career began at PurdueUniversity as its first professor ofAnimal Husbandry and Industry from1890 to 1902, after which he moved toThe Ohio State University for thebalance of his career. The main AnimalHusbandry Department building duringhis time served was renamed PlumbHall upon his death in 1939. Thanks to everyone who helped with this Nov-Dec News,which turned out to be another family-friendly and youth-oriented Holiday issue. Despite the pressures of harvest,breeders came in with their ads. Please notice all ourcommercial advertising, something rather unique in a statebreed publication, which allows us to hold down costs toeveryone. Take time to mention to all our advertisers thatyou saw their ad in the Ohio Holstein News.

Recent months have been busy, with three sales sinceAugust 25, which included printing catalogs and flyers, andthe annual membership drive. The last of the District Showreports are in this issue, and we appreciate all who help withthese shows, and especially those who send in the reports.One more activity this year is the Barn Meeting, with DonBennink as speaker, and the Tag Sale at Springhill onDecember 15. The News Committee met in October to planfor the coming year, and the Show Committee will bemeeting in December to make the All-Ohio and Junior All-Ohio choices. Juniors have been meeting also, and theAnnual Meeting and Convention Sale Committees are busywith plans. The Board meets four or more times a year forbusiness and planning sessions.

We rely on many volunteers to help with Holsteinactivities. According to Martha Jordan, a mental healthprofessional in Ashland County, when volunteercoordinators talk about what they appreciate in individualswho willingly offer their time and talents to anorganization, there are three descriptions that regularlysurface. Initially, there is a passion that takes the form ofsupporting a cause or program and a strong belief thatvolunteering does make a difference. Then there is thequality of commitment to make a difference and to dowhatever is needed to help that cause. Next is a positiveattitude that displays a joyful spirit. Volunteers haveenthusiasm and drive for whatever needs to be done. Whatmotivates volunteers? The short answer may be that theywant to do something that will better society and improvesituations. There may also be a desire to feel useful, havenew experiences, develop as a person and work with others.There is some scientific and medical documentation thatvolunteering can give a more optimistic outlook on life, aheightened sense of well-being, increased energy and a senseof connectedness with others. So, Holstein volunteers — toomany to mention — THANK YOU for all you do for theAssociation.

What an incredible fall this hasbeen with Quality Quest havinganother successful sale and the OhioMulti-Breed Fall Sale completed andprofitable. I would like to extend mygratitude and thanks to the consignorsfor the quality of cattle they offer, andto the buyers and the confidence theyhave in purchasing quality cattle fromyour Association-managed sales. I alsoneed to thank our two co-chairs of thesale committee, Barb Lumley and KenJanes, who give hours of their time foreach sale. Also, Nancy Kemp, whoseassistance in mailing flyers andcatalogs is a huge help. Last, but notleast, Pete Spike, who has taken overthe design and information that goesinto each catalog, and for theenormous amount of time he spendsmaking sure the information isaccurate and correct. It's the efforts ofthose I have mentioned and thecountless names I have notmentioned that continue to keep ourAssociation successful.

On November the 4th, I had theopportunity to attend the District 3Fall meeting hosted by the DonaldSimpson family of Plainfield Farms attheir new facility. They had a beautifulfall day and an attendance of about 50people. A tour of new the facility,judging contest, pie contest andauction, and a pot luck meal wereenjoyed by all.

Plans are underway for our StateConvention to be held in Sidney,Ohio, on March 8 and 9, 2013,located at the Sidney Inn, which will

be very economical, with a lot ofroom for the Holstein AssociationWinter Forum, Queen contest, a greatarea for the Juniors to meet and havefun, the Annual Meeting on Saturdayand the opportunity for members toenjoy visiting with everyone. TheOhio Association, along with theDistricts in the Sidney area, will havea Convention sale with approximately70 head selling, and plans are to havean exciting sale.

I will be working with the BuckeyeDairy Club making selections for the

Buckeye Classic Sale during theirholiday break; be prepared to haveone of the students from the club stopin looking for a great consignment fortheir sale March 29, 2013. The OhioHolstein Association will also have aSpring Sale at the Wayne CountyFairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio, onApril 24, 2013. As you can see fromthis column, 2013 will have threegreat sales to get the new year off to agood start.

The high-selling Holstein at $5,700 was Lot 62, Family-Pro Milly 158, a Very Good-86 Windy-Knoll-View RubensPro daughter, recently fresh and milking 95 pounds a day.She was the consignment of Richard and Judy Wolf,Creston, Ohio, and was purchased by Spring Walk Farms,William Wachtel and Family, Big Prairie, Ohio.

Purchased by Alan Brown, New Bremen, Ohio, for$5,500 was Lot 8, Pine-Tree Freddie Wish-ET, consigned byMatthew Steiner, Rittman, Ohio. Sired by Badger-BluffFanny Freddie, she carried contract interest from numerousAI studs, was classified Very Good-85 and descended fromseven generations of Excellent dams.

The average was $2,597 on 63 live Holstein lots. FourHolstein embryo lots averaged $1,438. Five consignmentssold from $4,100 to $4,600, and nine more sold over$3,000.

The top-selling Ayrshire was Lot 8, Spring Run Blue SkyDennie at $2,500. A two-year-old daughter of HawksfieldBlue Sky, she had recently calved, was consigned by ThomasWolf, Shreve, Ohio, and was purchased by Norbert Farms.The Ayrshires averaged $1,307 on 15 lots.

Lot 20 was the high-selling Brown Swiss at $1,600. CocoCharge Emma, a bred heifer due to calve in February toBasic and sired by Little Hill Ladys Charge, was consignedby Alyssa Lautzenheiser, New Philadelphia, Ohio, andpurchased by Tammy Zimmerman, East Canton, Ohio. TheBrown Swiss averaged $1,475.

Milking Shorthorn Lot 22, Tres Colles Alben Dubbie, awinter calf consigned by Tres Colles Farm, Chillicothe,Ohio, sold for $1,200 and was purchased by Brian Whalen.She was a Tres Colles Roco Alben daughter. MilkingShorthorns averaged $1,150.

The high-selling Jersey at $1,600 was Lot 24, J-KayJustice Elisha, a recently fresh three-year old, sired by JanesPrimetime Justice. She was purchased by Richard Bardall,Tippecanoe, Ohio, and was consigned by Ericka Graves andJacob Morgan, Urbana, Ohio. Jerseys averaged $1,300.

The sale was managed by the Ohio Holstein Associationand the Ohio Ayrshire Breeders Association. Auctioneer wasSteve Andrews, Wooster, Ohio, with Ted Renner and DuaneRader reading the pedigrees. Ringmen were Don Alexander,Randall Kiko, Lynn Neuenschwander, Ken Janes and PaulHaskins. Cattle sold to Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

As the registered Holstein cows entered the barn andwalked to the holding pen where they would await theirturn to parade the sale ring for owners Doug and Marty Dyeand Family at The Best of Quality-Quest 2012 Sale, onecould not help but notice the sound, well-attached udders,with so many of them high and wide in the rear. And justas the records in the sale catalog showed, they looked likemilk! They would enter the sale ring exactly as they werecataloged, beginning with Lot 1, Quality-Quest Fancifire-ET, classified Very Good-88, sired by Ked Outside Jeeves andthe first of many members of the outstanding Firepowercow family. When the hammer fell at $4,400, she and twoembryos became the property of Jay J. Hein, Celina, Ohio.

The crowd would have to wait until Lot 15 for the saletopper at $5,100. She would be Quality-Quest AlexRockette, classified Good Plus-84 and milking 88 pounds aday. Sired by Golden-Oaks St Alexander and from sevengenerations of Excellent dams that included “Roxy,” theExcellent-97 4E Queen of the Breed, she sold to SpringWalk Farm, William Wachtel and Family, Big Prairie, Ohio.For $4,700, Spring Walk Farm would also take homeQuality-Quest Alexander Ann, Very Good-87, milking 97pounds per day, also sired by Alexander and from a VeryGood-88 Damion daughter.

Lot 39 sold for $4,400 to Jake Hein, Celina, Ohio.Quality-Quest Gln Sunstruck, Very Good-85, was milking124 pounds a day and sired by Glen-Valley BW Captainfrom a Very Good-87 Michael Storm Avalanche dam. Tenmore animals sold for $3,000 and over. The volume buyerwas Harold Leid, Greenwich, Ohio, who purchased eighthead for $16,500. The sale average on 78 lots was $2,340.Cattle sold to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The sale was managed by Kiko Auctions, Canton, Ohio,assisted by the Ohio Holstein Association. Randall Kikowas the auctioneer with Ted Renner reading the pedigrees.Ringmen were Rusty Kiko, Brian Garrison, Steve Deam andDon Alexander.

opportunity to spend a couple of days at Madisonand visit with some friends and see afew good cows — ha, ha. What abeautiful group of cows and heifers.Amazing, the total dominance ofGoldwyn in the top end of the cowclasses. Atwood and Fever were alsofavorites of mine.

On milk production in September,the 23 states that USDA reportsmonthly was 14.7 billion pounds,.5% below September a year ago.Milk price is still $4.50 per hundredbelow a year ago.

On Association news, at the end ofthe third quarter, Holstein Completehas 280,600 animals in 1,836 herds,

The averageregistration fee is $8.04, which is $.58less than last year. Transfers were50,945 animals through the thirdquarter, which is 11% highercompared to last year. ThroughSeptember, 165,815 animals in 3,589herds were classified, 2% less thanlast year.

I just got back from the ShowCommittee and JAC Committeemeetings. We could have someprogressive new changes, both inshows and also in Junior activities. Ifyou ever get asked to participate inany of the committees that HAUSA isinvolved in, I encourage you to do so.It is a great opportunity to meet newpeople, express your opinion andhelp your organization.

Scholarship recipient Rebekah A.Meller, of Wauseon, Ohio, is a seniorat The Ohio State University in theCollege of Food, Agricultural, andEnvironmental Sciences. Majoring inAnimal Sciences and with an expectedgraduation date of May 2013, herfuture plans are to attend graduateschool with a focus in ruminant

nutrition with a dairy cattle emphasis.While at Ohio State, Rebekah has

worked at the OSU Waterman DairyFarm, as Student Manager and Milkerand Feeder, and at the OSU ParkerFood Laboratory as a StudentResearcher. Her college activitiesinclude OSU Buckeye Dairy Club,OSU Horse Judging Team, OSU

Horsemen’s Association and FoodBooth Chair. She competed in theCargill Dairy Challenge. In theHoard’s Dairyman judging competi-tion, she placed in the top ten ofapproximately 4,000 participants.

She was an 11-year 4-H member,and as a member of the Pettisville FFAchapter, received the State Farmerdegree in 2009 and the AmericanFarmer Degree in 2012. In 2008, shewas the National FFA Costa Rica Agri-Tour Winner, National FFA FoodScience & Technology ProficiencyFinalist and received an OSU Food &Agriculture Science Scholarship. Shewas a three-year finalist in the IntelInternational Science and EngineeringFair and was National FFA AgriscienceStudent of the Year in 2010.

Rebekah is the daughter of Gene,Jr., and Donna Meller and thegranddaughter of Gene and WaunetaMeller, District 10.

Commenting on the scholarship,Tony Good said, “This is simply a waymy family can continue to support myfather’s three favorite things in hishonor: Cows, Kids and Buckeyes.”

Previous winners of the scholar-ship were Jason Miley in 2010 andLaura Gordon in 2011.

COLUMBUS, OH — It is with great pleasure and pride thatI can present the results of the Ohio 4-H Dairy Judgingteam at the recent North American International DairyJudging Contests. With 22 youth teams present, our 4-Hteam claimed many honors when the trophies and ribbonswere presented at the recognition breakfast on Monday,November 5. This contest usually represents a newbeginning and a new team for the judging season. Memberswere Macy Conrad from Pickaway County, Colton Harstinefrom Tuscarawas County, and Tanner and Tessa Topp fromWayne County. Generally, the four individuals whoparticipate at Louisville will be top contenders for a placeon the Oho 4-H team that competes at the national contestduring World Dairy Expo of the following year.

Overall, the team placed fourth, coming in fifth inreasons. Considering the fact that two members had notcompeted in a contest of this caliber, it was an outstandingfinish. As a team, they were recognized as third in Jerseys,fourth in Holsteins, seventh in Guernseys and eighth forAyrshires and Brown Swiss. Tessa Topp was the sixth-highindividual overall and earned third place for her sets ofreasons. Tanner followed by being in the 14th placingoverall, and Macy was 18th. Prior to the contest, the teamhad traveled to many workouts both in and out of Ohio.

It is a pleasure to report their success on the tanbark, buta greater honor to coach the many personal victories thatare afforded to these students who accept the challenge ofmaking time to improve their skills of problem solving,decision making and public speaking.

COLUMBUS, OH — It requires dedication, endurance andcommitment to compete as members of the Ohio 4-HDairy Judging team. Four young ladies from around thestate of Ohio just completed their 4-H careers with muchsuccess at the Pennsylvania All-American Contest and alsothe National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held at Madisonduring World Dairy Expo. The young ladies were LauraBond of Trumbull County, Emily Dudash of ChampaignCounty, Hillary (Jackson) Hayman of Logan County andMeghan Thurston of Delaware County. Each has spent yearsjudging locally and at the state contest.

Following are the remarkable results of their journey!At the All-American contest in Pennsylvania, they

finished in first place. Excellent performance brought themthis success, as all four young ladies were in the top tenindividually. Emily was second overall (and second inreasons), Hillary fourth, Laura fifth and Meghan eighth.Also they finished in third as a team with their oral reasons.In the separate breeds, they were first in Guernseys, secondin Ayrshires, fifth in Brown Swiss, second in Holsteins andthird in Jerseys. More results can be located on the PA All-American website.

The National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest was oneof the largest in recent years with 32 teams competing. Thesame young ladies ended up sixth-high team with Meghanin a Top 25 finish and Laura twelfth, receiving thedistinctive title of “All-American.” Laura was also ninth inoral reasons. Hillary received recognition as third-high inHolsteins, and the team also garnered the third placeaward. In Guernseys, they were fifth, and Emily wasseventh-high individual in Ayrshires. The trips to these contests also provide many farm visitsfor practices as well as tours of the Hoard’s Dairyman farm,Nasco and National Dairy Shrine.

The Ohio State University Scarlet team also competed infall contests held at the Pennsylvania All-American andWorld Dairy Expo. The team was composed of Marc Bolenof Fremont, Samantha Grizzell of Kingston and KeithGibson of Springfield. Although Marc was quitecomfortable as a contestant since he was on ATI’s second-place team at Madison, these were the first contests forSamantha and Keith. With a finish in the top ten teams atthe All-American, the team also finished in the middle ofthe National Dairy Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest atMadison during World Dairy Expo. However, Marc finishedwith his very best day and ended his judging career on ahigh note as the eleventh-high individual overall, receivingthe “All-American” title.

Another noteworthy accomplishment was his fifth-highscore in placings, added to the fact that his breed placingsincluded third-high in Red and White, ninth in BrownSwiss, sixth in Guernseys and fourteenth in Holsteins. KeithGibson also claimed high honors as the third-highindividual in Jerseys. Since he had never judged orpresented reasons until four months ago, it was a personalvictory for him.

Again, we would like to thank the dairy industry, hostfarms, volunteers and the generous donors to our program.The experience is worthy of all your time and efforts andbinds these students together as they pursue future careers.

Well…the show season isover and harvest time iswinding down, along with fallsports and the first semestersof school. This November/December issue is usually allabout youth. NOTE: The scholarship can be awarded to either ayoung woman or a young man who is continuing theireducation in an agricultural field.

I have enjoyed reading the Queen’s Corner in the News.Our queens have reported they learned so much about thedairy industry, met wonderful people, had fun travelingthe state and developed their dairy judging skills byvisiting so many fairs and district shows. It is so rewardingin many ways.

We are working toward the Fun Auction to be held atnoon on March 9 to benefit the Women’s ScholarshipFund. We would like each district to participate by gettingdonated items or by getting money donated to purchaseitems.

Ohio Holstein Women’s Scholarship 2013I. ELIGIBILITY:

A. Applicant ‰ Shall be a male or female high

school graduate and may be up to25 years of age.

‰ Must come from a Holstein dairybackground. (Active in dairyprojects, 4-H, FFA, Junior BreedAssociation or work on a dairyfarm.)

‰ Must use for further education.‰ Shall be second semester/quarter

freshman or any other level.‰ Shall maintain at least a 2.25

accumulative grade point averageand be in good standing withuniversity or mentoringrepresentative.

B. Past recipients may apply.C. Final discretion lies with the Ohio

Holstein Women’s Association.

II. SELECTION:A. Applications will be available from:

Ohio Holstein Women, P.O. Box 479,Wooster, Ohio, 44691, or online atwww.ohioholstein.com. Due byFebruary 15, 2013.

B. The Ohio Holstein Women’s ScholarshipCommittee will make selections eachyear.

C. Applicants shall be interviewed ifrequested by the OHW ScholarshipCommittee.

D. Scholarship does not have to beawarded every year. More than onescholarship may be given if fundspermit.

III. SCHOLARSHIP AWARD:A minimum scholarship of $650 will beawarded. Payment will be made upon thereceiving an official transcript from theprevious semester/quarter. A grade reportis required for payment. The recipient mustalso be enrolled for the nextsemester/quarter to remain eligible.‰ The mentoring scholarship will be

awarded in one lump sum of $650with a required report, personalinterview and presentation to the OhioHolstein Women at their annualmeeting. The recipient will need to beavailable for his or her project oreducational report.

HELLO AGAIN!I hope everyone is

enjoying this time ofyear. I love fall — allof the beautiful colorson the trees and thecrisp, cool nights —and not to mentionyummy desserts likepumpkin pie! I hopeeveryone enjoyed allof the shows thissummer; I know Isure did! It was agreat experience totravel all across Ohio and see a lot of great cows! I enjoyedbeing able to experience other county fairs, and I had achance to make many new friends.

I haven’t been to any shows lately, however I have hadthe opportunity to stay connected with the dairy and beenable to see cows along the east coast, traveling with theOhio State Dairy Judging Team. Over Labor Day weekend,we traveled to Maryland for what Bonnie calls “BootCamp.” We judged 22 classes in two days and gavenumerous sets of reasons. It was an exhausting weekend,but it helped me improve my skills. A few weeks later, we

traveled to Massachusetts to judge at the Big E. We departedfrom Columbus, taking two days to stop at many farmsalong our way. We judged classes and gave reasons in theevenings at our hotel. The next day both college teams andthe 4-H teams judged at Big E. Then we headed back toHarrisburg, where the 4-H team, including Hillary Jackson,Emily Dudash, Laura Bond and Megan Thurston, and thecollege team consisting of Marc Bolen, Samantha Grizelland Keith Gibson all took part in judging at the All-American Dairy Show. Robin Alden, Jarred Smith, TylerSchounour and I all judged ringside and gave reasons aswell. Congratulations to the 4-H team for winning theirdivision! In two weeks, we will be heading to Lousiville tocompete at the North American International LivestockExpo. Thank you to all of the farms for allowing us to visit,and to Bonnie, Julie, Bernie, Tom and everyone else whomade this experience possible!

I would also like to encourage young women in thedairy industry to apply for next year’s queen. This year hastruly been amazing, and I have had so much fun attendingshows, seeing great cows and meeting awesome people. Youhave the best seats in the house, which helps to be able toevaluate all of the cattle that walk through the ring.

I also will share a great experience I had at State Fair thisyear. After the futurity, I was going to change out of mydress, when two cute little girls who were probably four orfive ran up and stopped right in front of me with theirhands cupped over their mouths. They started shouting“Mommy look, Mommy look! It’s a princess!” So I askedthem their names, and their mom took a picture of me withthem. Although this made me laugh, I realized that I was arole model, and I didn’t even know them. It made me smileto know that I made their day, and it is something that I willremember forever! zing a bus trip for either World Dairy Expo or The RoyalAgricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada, next fall. TheNew York Holstein Association has organized several bustrips over the years to the Royal, and I mention this in mycolumn and would like your thoughts and interest onplanning a bus trip to one or both of these events. Againthis year, I had the opportunity to attend both, and I knowOhio had a group of members that had a great trip to theRoyal. Our next Board meeting is scheduled for January 4,2013; any feedback you would like to give your Director topass on to the Board would give us an idea of the numberof people interested in a bus trip this fall.

I hope to see a great turnout for the Barn Meeting andTag Sale at Springhill Holsteins on December 15. Eventsbegin with a viewing of the cattle being offered by the Langfamily, followed by lunch at the nearby church with guestspeaker Don Bennink, managing partner/owner of NorthFlorida Holsteins. Mr. Bennink is one of the most dynamicpeople in the in the industry today when it comes to healthtraits, genomics, IVF and large dairy operations.

You Can’t Take theCountry Out of the Boy

VICTOR KAHL, District 8, submitted the photo at leftfrom 1952 that shows him reading the Ohio Holstein Newswhile serving with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Battalion,Able Company in Korea — proving that you can’t take thecountry out of the boy.

Vic left the states in July of 1953, landed at Inchon andmoved from Seoul to Panmunjom at the 38th Parallel. Hewas wounded November 21, 1952, and after the Armisticewas signed, returned to the states with a Purple Heart and afistful of other decorations to finish his duty at the NavalGun Factory at Washington, D.C.

Vic returned to Ashland County, where he and his wifeMarcella, nee Tugend, established Kimber Lane Holsteins.He was an active member on the Ashland County HolsteinBoard and combined dairying with a long career as a schoolbus driver in the Hillsdale District. He continues hisinterest in Holsteins, watching his grandson Dex Rogerswin Grand Champion at the Junior Show at the 2012Ashland County Fair.

— In Memoriam —VAUGHN CLAWSON SUNBURY, 96, diedSeptember 28, 2012, at this home. He had been ownerand operator of a portable milling business and wasalso a dairy farmer. He was a breeder of RegisteredHolstein cattle and had received many honors. Hehad been a member and past president of theTrumbull County Holstein Association and memberof the state and national Holstein Associations.

Vaughn was a lifetime member of JohnstonFederated United Methodist Church. He was a pastmember of the Johnston School Board, Farm BureauFederation and Sod Busters Farm Bureau Council.

Survivors include his wife, the former Ruth Croop,whom he married February 4, 1945; son James V.(Marjorie) Sunbury of Johnston; granddaughterBrianna (Lucas) Zweig; great-granddaughters Zadaand Samara Zweig of Wisconsin; three nephews inCalifornia; and a niece in Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thad LawSunbury and Loucretta Clawson Sunbury, daughterCarol Vik and brother Roger D. Sunbury.
