WE REMEMBER DOC OssEllO...Dr. Gene “Doc” Ossello O.D., age 100, passed away, Thursday, September 27, 2012, in South Holland. Doc was one of the founders of the South Holland Business Association, served as President and Executive Director, and was active in our organization for many years. Some of our members remember him fondly:

I would like to share a few words about my friend. I knew Doc for 8 years – very few of the 36526 days, including leap years, that he lived. I first met Doc when I became involved in SHBA in 2004. I remem-ber when I first met him and went to shake his hand, and instead he put up his fist and said ‘knuckle to

knuckle.’ That’s the way I greeted him every time after that!! I have been proud to serve in SHBA, the organization that he so faithfully

invested so much of his time and energy in for over 30 years. Most of us, when we reach our late 60’s, are looking for ways to simplify our lives. Not Doc Ossello. It was at that time of his life that Doc stepped up to the plate as a Champion for SHBA in its founding years. He was instrumental in setting a rock-solid foundation for SHBA’s future.

Doc continued to serve SHBA for over 30 years in many capacities. His service to SHBA included the Presidency, Executive Director and historian.

Did you know that for many years he clipped every article about SHBA that he could find in Southland newspapers? He compiled the articles into scrapbooks according to years and then presented a scrapbook to each president as a memorial of their service! Even when he entered his 90’s he was still attending SHBA monthly luncheons and events, putting out SHBA table centerpieces, and hanging up the SHBA banner. This continued until last year. What dedication and commitment! That’s why he is affectionately called SHBA and South Holland’s Ambassador. I remember that at the annual Doc Ossello Bocce Ball tournaments you would see ‘Bocce Ball Poten-tate’ Doc Ossello sitting in his lawn chair in his straw hat overseeing HIS games! His big goal in life was to achieve 100 years of age, and we were all excited to be able to celebrate that birthday with him. I remember jokingly saying to him on his birthday “well the first 100 are under your belt, now’s the time to work on the next 100!” He looked me square in the eye, laughed, and said “no thank you, 100 is plenty!” We all have been privileged to have had Doc touch our lives! He has been a role model for all. We will miss him. Donald Grimwood President, SHBA.

Doc celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year. He is shown above with wife Carol and Don Grimwood.

Doc Ossello was the most liked person South Holland has ever known. His smile was forever contagious. I think he smiled when he slept. Doc’s love for everyone was renowned and he never seemed to tire of making new friends. He was an image of perfect kindness in all his relation-ships. Dr. Osello would light up every room he entered. If you look up the word friend in the dictionary, there is a picture of Dr. Ossello. Doc Ossello was a mentor to everyone, everywhere he went. Can you imagine a South Holland without a Doc Ossello? I am personally ever so grateful for the dedication, devotion and energy he gave to the South Holland Business Assn. – year after year, for 33 years. Is there anyone with a bow-tie in heaven? There is now! Thanks for the memories, Doc. Jim Lagestee Lagestee-Mulder, Inc. Commercial Construction and Real Estate

When I think of Doc, I smile. He had a quality about him that you don’t see very often. He loved the South Holland Business Association and the Village of South Holland with all his heart, and you could see it in his eyes. He would visit the SHBA Office every Wednesday morning, with Ted Ver Haar not far behind. Before entering my office in the Shopper Building, he would knock on my window and smile at me. He would first pick up his copy of the Shopper newspaper that was always waiting for him – he always received the first copy every week – and then he would come visit me. This was not just a visit, it was SHBA Business. “How many members do you have?” When I was executive director, whatever the number, he would always have had more! But he would say “Oh you are doing a great job.” “What are you doing today; what kind of meeting are we going to have this month? Make sure you take pictures.” He would look around the office and comment about something that reminded him of what he had done for SHBA years ago, or he would talk about something he had made for one of the SHBA General Meetings. He spoke about how things were done when he was president. I loved our meetings. Wednesday mornings will always remind me of Doc, and I will smile. He was such a wonderful man, so bright and innovative for his time. When I think about Doc there will always be a smile in my heart for he was one-of-a-kind and I was privileged to have known him. Rest in peace, Doc, you will never be forgotten. Thank you for our talks and for caring. Pat Bohacik Former Exec. Dir., SHBA

The ChrisTmas season...

The best and brightest time of 2012 lies ahead of us. 2012 has been quite a tumultuous year, with a stagnant economy and national and local elections generating much stress and anxiety in our lives. Relief is just around the corner. Upon us now is a season for reflection on the many blessings we have in spite of the difficulties we have faced. A time to pause and think about how much we really do have to be grateful for.

Thanksgiving and Christmas is the time that we as Americans do what we do best. It’s a time our thankfulness motivates us to share our joy, our time, and our bounty with others. We gather with family, friends, co-workers, and the less fortunate to pour out our hearts and gifts and spread good will and cheer to others. We do that because within each of us lies the spirit of our Creator that loves the creation and desires to spread that love. We are blessed indeed to be here this year to share another Holiday season with so many.

SHBA wishes you a peaceful, joyful, fulfilling Holiday Season and a blessed and prosper-ous 2013.

I think we can all agree that goal setting and goal achieve-ment are good things. Most of us are probably working on multiple goals all the time. We have sales goals, weight-loss goals, production goals, exercise goals, safety goals, education goals and each of these has multiple sub-goals tucked inside the overriding goals. If I have a sales goal to make, and I always do, my sub-goals deal with the number of marketing communications I send out, the number of speaking engagements I do, the number of initial and follow-up phone calls I do, the number of appointments I have set, etc. I work hard to achieve my goals and I’m sure you do also. But there are goals and there are “GOALS!” Most goals are mundane, ordinary, and historically achievable such as: “We will increase our output of widgets by 5% by end of year. Unless your widget line is running 24/7/365 without shutdowns at full speed you should easily achieve that goal. You can probably do it without really breaking into a sweat. It just takes a modicum of commitment. Now sink your teeth into what would happen if you make it an audacious “GOAL!” by changing the increase to 50%. It’s a whole different ball game. In addition to commitment it will probably take lots of planning which

The compelling case for Audacious Goals

would include some or all of the following: forecasting, training, more scrupulous maintenance, more efficient space utilization, capital utilization, bonus compensation analysis, inventory controls, negotiation with vendors, bookkeeping, and more. Transforming normal goals into audacious goals can be a game changer. It can focus concentration, accelerate velocity, inspire, and motivate. It adds purpose and allows those active in the task to challenge their skills and intel-lect. I guarantee that if you now hear people describe a day at work as, “Oh you know, same old, same old (sigh!),” that all of a sudden, you will hear energy in their voice. So I’m going to be audacious and challenge you to look at your current goals and transform just one into an audacious “GOAL!” but put be sure to fasten your seat belt first.
