The Lighthouse on Garðskagi

OriginallyacairnwithanironpolewaserectedonthetipofGarðskagicoastin1847toguidethewayforseamen.Now,therearetwolighthouses,theolderandsmaller,builtin1897,wasonceregardedasoneofthebestlighthousesinIcelandbecauseitstoodlowandthereforemistwasnotaproblem,butriskybecauseofbeingdamagedbysurfandthatitwassometimesnotvisiblebecauseofstormsatsea.Becauseoflanderosionabridgewasbuilttoitandanewlighthousewasfinallybuiltin1944.At28metersitisthehighestlighthouseinIcelandandcameinsecondasthemostfavoritelighthouseinIceland.

Þórkötlustaðanes - Hópsnes Apeninsula,calledÞórkötlustaðanesontheeasternsideandHópsnesonthewesternside,wascreatedbyvolcaniceruptionsapprox.3000yearsagoandstandsoutsouthdividingGrindavíkintwo.ThispartofGrindavíkiscalledthevillageofÞorkötlustaðir.Thepeninsulagivessheltertothemainharbour.Animportantpartofhistoryisfoundhereandby

Reykjanes Lighthouse

ThefirstlighthouseinIcelandwasbuiltonValahnúkurinReykjanesintheyear1878.By1905earthquakesandsurfhaddamagedValahnúkursomuchthattherewastheriskofthelighthousefallingintothesea.Anewlighthousewasthereforebuiltin1907-1908onBæjarfellhillinReykjanesandtheoldonewasdemolishedonApril,1908.Asurveydonein2007fortheIcelandicMaritimeAdministrationledtotheconclusionthatReykjaneslighthousewasthemostpopularlighthouseamongIcelanders.Thelightsignalheightis69metersabovesealevelbuttheactualheightofthelighthouseis26meters.Reykjaneslighthousealsohasaradiobeaconwithacorrectionsignal.Thereiscarvedrockandconcreteinthelighthouse.ArchitectFrederikKjørboeandengineerThorvaldKrabbedesignedthelighthouse.TheoperationofReykjanesLighthouseisunderthesupervisionoftheIcelandicMaritimeAdministration.

Strandleið – the coastal hiking trail in Reykjanesbær.

Anew10kmlongcoastalhiking/walkingtrailliesfromtheMarinainGrófuptotheStapicliffsinInnri-Njarðvík.Thetrailgivesanopportunitytoenjoythefreshseaair,theseabirds,variouskindofcoastalvegetationandinsightintogeologyofvariousrocksandcliffs.Providinggoodphysicalrefreshment,onecanwalk,jog,bikeorrollonrollerskates.

WhalesThewaterssurroundingtheReykjanespeninsulaarehometodolphinsandvariousspeciesofwhalesinthewarmermonthsoftheyear,andinwinteraswell.CommonlyfoundinthewatersoffGarðurarewhite-beakeddolphinsandminkewhales.Inwinter,sightingsofbothdolphinsandwhalesarecommon,evenascloseasoutsidetheharbourinKeflavíkandnearby.Theareaisanimportanthabitatforthesemarinemammals,mainlyasaseasonalfeedingground,richinplankton.Thesewatersprovideexcellentconditionsforsuchfishspeciessuchassandeel,herring,capelin,haddockandcodtothrive.HumpbackwhalesarealsocommonlyseeninJulyandAugust,andoccasionallyseiwhales,finwhalesandtheenormousbluewhalesappearatthesurface.

Duushús Cultural Center

TheclusterofbuildingsthatmakeupDuushúsareamongIceland’smostremarkableandhistoricman-madestructures.Busycentersofcommercethroughouttheirexistence,theirlastrolebeforetheirconversionwasasafishprocessingplant.Withtheoldesttimberbuildingcompletedin1877andtheyoungestconcretestructurefinishedin1954,togethertheyspanalmostacenturyofIcelandicarchitecturalhistory.Today,thecomplexincludesfourexhibitioncenters,whichhousetheTheReykjanesArtMuseum,TheReykjanesHeritageMuseum,TheOldCinemaandTheReykjanesMaritimeCenter.

TheReykjanesHeritageMuseumpresentstemporaryexhibitionswhichaddressspecificaspectsinlocalhistoryoftheregionandsomewhatthewholecountry.AnewexhibitionbytheReykjanesHeritageMuseum,opensinthespringof2012.Itcoversthewinterfishingseason,“Vetrarvertíðin”:ForcenturiesIcelanderstravelledonfootfromtheirhomestothefishingportsinWestandSouth-WestofIceland.TheyarrivedlateinJanuaryandstayedfor3monthsuntillearlyMaywhentheywalkedback.Thiswasthebestseasontocatchthefishasitcamenearerthecoasttospawn.Thefishwasthenhunguptodry.TheseasonalfishingwasveryimportantasdriedfishwaspartofthedailyfoodandthemostimportantexportofIcelanders.Thefoundationoftheseasidetownsandvillagesintheareaisthenearbyrichfishinggroundsasisdepictedintheexhibition.

The Church at Útskálar

EinarJónssonfromBrúarhraun(1818-1891)builtthefoundationofthechurchwhichwasconsecratedin1863.TheinteriorofthechurchwaspaintedanddecoratedbyÁkiGränz,amasterpainter.Thechurchispreservedandhasamoderntowerdesign.Itismadefromwood.OneofthemosttragiceventsinIcelandicseahistoryisconnectedtothechurch.OnMarch8th,1685,156fishermendrownedatseainastormbyReykjanes.ManyofthemwerefromNorthIcelandstationedintheregionduringthemainfishingseason.OnMarch11th,42wereburiedinthechurchsgraveyardandthenextdayanother47bodiesdriftedashoreinGarðurandwerealsoburiedinthesamemassgrave.

The Church at Hvalsnes

ThechurchatHvalsneswasconsecratedin1887.KetillKetilssonfarmerandshipowneratKotvogur,whothenownedthelandatHvalsnesfinancedthebuildingofthechurch.Thechurchispreservedandallofthewoodwascollectedfromtheshoresnearby.Extensiverepairsweremadetothechurchin1945underthesupervisionofthearchitectofthestate.OneofthemostremarkableitemsofthechurchisthegravestoneofSteinunnHallgrímsdóttirwhodiedwhenshewas4yearsoldin1649.ShewasthedaughterofHallgrímurPétursson,Iceland’smostimportantpsalmistwhoatthattimeservedasapriestattheparishinHvalsnes.Thegravestonewaslostforalongtimebutwasdiscoveredagainin1964howeverithadbeenusedasapartofawalkwayleadingtothechurch.

Selatangar isanoldfishingstation,usedfromtheMiddleAgesuntil1884.Fromhereduringthemainfishingseasoninwinter,seamenrowedouttoseainopenboats.Roughandsmall,madefromcarvedlavarock,onecanstillseeremainsoffishermenshutsandshedswherestockfishwasstored.Theyhavebeendeclaredinviolate.ThebishopattheSkálholtepiscopalseehadafishingstationthere.Duringthelastcentury,visitorswereharrassedbyanespeciallymalevolentghostcalledTanga-Tómas.DriftwoodwasinabundanceatSelatangarinthepast,butlessnowadays.Thesurroundingsaregrandious,lowmountainsandlavafields.Atrackfor4wd-vehiclesliesdowntotheruinsandtheKetill,astrangelavaformation,onthecoastfromtheroadtoGrindavík(427).

The “Turkish” raidIntheyear1627,piratesfromAlgiersraidedIceland.TheyfirstattackedtheWestmanIslands,thenarrivedatGrindavíkonJune20.TheAlgerianpirateswereknownas“Turks”inIceland,asAlgeriawasthenapartofthehugeOttomanEmpire.TheyseizedIcelandersandDanesandsoldthemintoslaveryinNorthAfrica.NoonewaskilledintheraidonGrindavík,buttwowereinjured.SomeoftheenslavedprisonerswerelaterransomedandeventuallyreturnedtoIceland;oneofthem,GuðríðurSímonardóttir,marriedtheRev.HallgrímurPétursson,authoroftheHymnsofthePassionandanotherisHalldór,thegrandfatherofJónÞorkelssonThorkilliustheprincipal.

The Básendar Storm and FloodBásendarisanancientfishingoutfitandatradingpostjustsouthofStafnes.ItwasoneoftheharboursoftheDanishTradeMonopolypostscomprisingHafnir,StafnesandMidnes.DuringthenightofJanuary9th1799acatastrophictidalflooddevastatedBatsendar.Itsweptmostofthehousesawayandsomeofthepeoplebarelyescaped.Onlyoneoldwomandrowned.Thiswasthemostdevastating,tidalfloodinthehistoryofthecountry.

HúshólmiTheHúshólmiareaisasocalled„clearing“overwhichthelavaÖgmundarhraundidn´tflowduringaneruptionintheyear1151.ThelavacameflowingfromvulcaniccratersontheeastsideofNúpshlíðarhálshilldowntotheshore.Accordingtoarchaeologists,inthewesternpartofthe„clearing“areruinsoftheancientKrýsuvíkfarm,datedbacksincebeforetheyear900.Theruinsareapartofahomeandmostlikelyachurchandasemitary.Aninterestingsiteworthvisitingbutcanonlybemadeonfoot.

StafnesStafneswasamansioninthepast.Thereweremanyfishingoutfitsonthepropertyandmanypeoplelivedthereduringthefishingseasons.RoyalDanishfishingoutfitsstartedoperatingtherearoundthemiddleofthe16thcenturyandwereabolishedin1769.TheinhabitantsoftheKing´spropertiesintheSouthwestwereobligedtoworkontheKing´sboats

Hallgrímur PéturssonHallgrímur(1614-74),regardedasIceland’sgreatestreligiouspoet,isbestknownforhisHymnsofthePassion.Firstpublishedin1666,theHymnsofthePassionhavebeentranslatedintomanyotherlanguages,includingLatinandChinese.ForcenturiesIcelandershavereadtheHymnsofthePassion,alongwiththeBible,forinspirationandspiritualcomfort.During

LentthehymnsarestillreadtodayinallmajorchurchesinIceland.Asayoungman,HallgrímurwenttoDenmarktotrainasablacksmithbutfollowingtheadviceoftheRev.BrynjólfurSveinsson,laterbishopofSkálholt,Hallgrímurdecidedtotrainforthepriesthoodinstead.In1637hereturnedtoIcelandafterfiveyearsofstudy,andsettledinNjarðvík,avillageonSuðurnes.HewasappointedtoHvalsnesChurchinthevillageofSandgerði,whereheservedforsevenyears.Hewasalreadyknownforhispoetry,butachievedtruefameafterhisdeath.AtHvalsnesthegravestoneofhisbeloveddaughterSteinunn,whodiedattheageoffour,wasdiscoveredduringbuildingwork.Thestone,believedtohavebeencutbyHallgrímur’sownhand,istheonlyobjectofHallgrímur’smakinginexistence.Onthedeathofhislittlegirl,HallgrímurwrotethehymnwhichisstillsungateveryfuneralinIceland.

Jón Þorkelsson and Sveinbjörn EgilssonJónÞorkelssonThorkillius(1697-1759)andSveinbjörnEgilsson(1791-1852),bothborninInnri-Njarðvík,werecloserelatives.JónwasprincipalofthecathedralschoolatSkálholt.HewasaremarkablemanwithagreatinterestineducationandschoolsinIceland.Awealthyman,heleftallhisworldlygoodstofoundschoolsinKjalarnesdistrict,andhencehehasbeencalledthefatherofprimaryeducationinIceland.Amonumentwaserectedbesidethechurchinhismemoryin1965.Sveinbjörntoowasascholar,andthefirstprincipalofReykjavíkHighSchoolin1846.Hewasagreatpoet,translatorandagrammarianwhowroteadictionaryofIcelandicskaldiclanguage,theLexiconPoëticum.HismostfamousworksarehistranslationsofHomer.Hetooiscommemoratedbyamonumentatthechurch.

The Nato baseAfterthesigningoftheIceland–U.S.DefenceAgreementin1951,aNATObasewasestablishedatKeflavíkAirport.Ahugeconstructionprogrammewaslaunchedtoupgradetheairportfacilitiesandhousethe5,000militarypersonnelonthebase.Inthe1950sconstructionworkonthebase,togetherwithincreaseddemandforvariousservicestothemilitaryprovidedahugeboosttolocalcommunities;theirpopulationrosefromabout5,000toabout9,000.Inaddition,thenumberofservicemenandtheirfamiliesincreaseduntilthebasebecamethesixth-largestcommunityinIceland.By1960,approximatelyoneofeveryfiveworkersinKeflavíkwasemployedonthebase.ThisworkaffectedKeflavíkandNjarðvíkthemost,whereasGrindavík,Hafnir,SandgerðiandGarðurremainedforthemostparttraditionalfishingvillages.BytheendoftheColdWar,theimportanceofthebasedeclined,andafter1990operationsgraduallywounddown.

OnSeptember30th,2006thebasefinallycloseddown.AllthebuildingsandotherstructureswerehandedovertotheIcelandicstate,andtodaytheareahousesauniversityandcampus,andotherservicesandindustriesaredevelopingthere.

Stapi Cliff Vogastapiwasnamed“TheHeiferCoveCliff”,later“TheCoveCliff”andsometimesjust“TheCliff”bytheinhabitantsofthearea.Itisan80m.high,doleritehillockbetweenCovesVogavikandNjardvik.Itisprecipitoustowardsthesea,buthasagradualgradientinland.Itismostlysparselyvegetatedandsomewhatbarreninplaces.ThemainroadtothewesterncommunitiesandtheinternationalairportinKeflavikcrossesit.Theviewfromitshighestpoint,Grimsholl,isexcellentandaviewdialexplainsthetopographicalnamesofthesurroundings.UptothisdatetheVogastapiAreaishauntedbyaghost,whichhasmisleadpeopleoffthebrinkofthecliff.Duringthemotorizedage,someofthepassersbyhavenoticedabeingcarryingitsheadunderitsarmandsometimesdriverstravellingalonespotteditintheirrearviewmirrorssittinginthebackseats.Tocommemoratetheearlierexistenceofthethisfigure,rockstatueshavebeenerectedtoremindtravellersacrosstheVogastapitobeaware.Otherrockstatuesnearbywereerctedtoremindusofthesecuritycarinscalled„TheTurkCairns“whichwereusedtogivesignsduringthe„Turskishraid“intheyear1627.

Staðarborg sheep shelterStadarborgisasheepshelter,approx.30minwalksoutheastfromchurchKalfatjorninVogar.Itisroundinshapeandconstructedskilfullyfromlavarocks.Itisabouttwometreshigh,8mindiameter,and35mincircumferance.Nosourcesrevealitsage,butitisconsideredtobeafewcenturiesold.Accordingtothelegend,amannamedGudmundurbuiltitforthereverendatKalfatjorn.

Hecollectedstonesfromthesurroundingareaandplannedtoclosethesheepshelterwithaconeshapedroofofstones,butthereverendenvisionedithigherandmoreprominentthanhischurch´ssteepleandstoppedtheconstructionwork.Thestonemasonleftitexactlyasweseeittoday.Itwasdeclaredinviolatein1951

level.TheoldesteruptionsincehistoricaltimesistheBláfjöllmountainridgeeruptionwhichbeganintheyear930andlastedforabout100years.TheseconderuptionperiodisnamedafterKrýsuvík.Themaineruptionofthatperiodwasin1151whena25kilometer-longfissureopenedandlavaflowedintotheseabothonthenorthernpart(theKapelluhraunlava)andsouthernpart(theÖgmundarhraunlava)oftheReykjanespeninsula.ThethirderuptionperiodwhichiscalledReykjaneseruptionandlastedfrom1210-1240.ThiseruptionwasonthepointofthepeninsulaandpartlyintheseawhereEldeyrosefromtheoccean.Thevolcanicactivityalignsitselfontheso-callederuptionfissureswheretherearevolcanoesandopenfissures.Thereareoftenriftvalleysalongtheeruptionfissuresandthechainsofcraters.

Krýsuvík

TheKrýsuvíkgeothermalareaisapopularrecreationaldestination,withmanyinterestinghikingpaths.TheGrænavatnandGestastaðavatnlakesandthetwosmallpoolsoneachsideoftheroadfurthersouth,Augun(Eyes),areallexplosioncraterscreatedbyvolcaniceruptionsatvarioustimes.Grænavatnlakeisthelargest,some46metresdeep,withgreenwaterduetothermalalgae.LakeKleifarvatnisthelargestlakeontheReykjanespeninsula,9.1km²,andoneofthecountry’sdeepestlakes,at97metres.Itvariesinsizeovertheyear.Accordingtolegendamonsterintheshapeofaserpentasbigasamedium-sizedwhalelurksinthelake.Krýsuvíkwasonceaseparateparish,withoneofthelargestestatefarmsinthecountryandmanytenants’crofts.Itshouldbekeptinmindthatthearea’smagnificentnatureisverydelicateandmustbetreatedwithgreatcareandrespect.

The Katlahraun lava.ThelavawhichcreatedtheKetill(pot,kettle)flowedfromcraterscalledMoshólar(themainroadnowrunsthroughit)approx.2000yearsago.Thesurfcooledthelavaandaroundpondwasformedwiththeboilinglavainside.Thepoisonousgasesfromwithinfounditswayouttothesurfaceandalava-chimneywasformed.Thesurfaceofthelavapondhardenedbutthehotlavabeneatheventuallybrokethrough,formingtunnelsandroughedgesuntilthepondwasempty.Thehardenedsurfacefinallyfellandbrokedownshapingtheareawithlotsofbrokenflatlavarocksandthemassivelava-chimneystillstanding.Atrackfor4wd-vehiclesliesdowntotheKetillandSelatangar-ruinsonthecoastfromtheroadtoGrindavík(427).

Eldey islandEldeyisasheer77-metrehighrockprotrudingoutoftheseaabout15kmtothesouthofthesouthwesternmosttipoftheReykjanespeninsula.ThestructureofEldeyisbasaltichyaloclastitesanditis0,03m2inarea.Itistheinnermostofachainofskerriesstandingonashallow,submarineridge,whichstretches45seamilesoffshoretothesouthwest.ThenameofthischainisFuglaskerorEldeyjar.OneofthoseskerrieswasGeirfuglasker,wherethelastbreedingcoloniesoftheGreatAukwaslocated.Geirfuglaskerdisappearedmostlyfromthesurfaceduringsubmarineeruptionsin1830.OneofthebiggestgannetcoloniesoftheworldstillsurvivesonEldey.Accordingtoacountwhichwasmadein1949,thenumberofgannetsbreedingthereduringthesummerwas70.000.

Bridge Between Continents

Thelava-scarredReykjanespeninsulaliesononeoftheworld’smajorplateboundaries,theMid-AtlanticRidge.Accordingtothecontinentaldrifttheory,theEurasianandNorthAmericantectonicplatesarecontinuouslydriftingapartwithgreatforcesunderthegapingrifts.Astheplatesdiverge,linearfractures,knownasfissuresformduetostressescreatedbythetensionthatbuildsupastheplatesmoveawayfromeachother.ThebridgebetweentwocontinentsatSandvíkisasmallfootbridgeoveramajorfissurewhichprovidesclearevidenceofthepresenceofadivergingplatemargin.ThebridgewasbuiltasasymbolfortheconnectionbetweenEuropeandNorthAmerica.OnecancrossthecontinentaldivideonLeiftheLucky’sBridgeandtakehomeapersonalisedcertificateatReykjanesInformationCenterasconfirmationandareminderofthisspectacularexperience.
