    The Dragon of the East

The four Guardians of Iceland, one for each quarter of the country, aredescribed in an old tale of a magician sent by King Harold of Denmark

to spy prior to invasion. The magician swam to Iceland in the formof a whale, and when he reached the country he saw that all hills

and mountains were full of spirits and elementary beings, large andsmall. As he approached Vopnafjrur (Fjord of Weapons) on theEast coast he was met by a huge dragon, the protector of the east, accompanied by worms and lizards. So he fled, looking for a place withweaker defences. On he went to the North, the West and the South, always drivenaway by the guardians, the eagle, the bull and the giant. The magicianfound no place to come ashore and thus returned empty-handed to

the king and thereby the invasion attempts of the King of Denmarkcame to an end.

    Trails and trekking

East Iceland is a land of contrast in landscapes, from the unearthly desertsand ice-capped volcanoes to lush green valleys and deep blue fjords thatmake it a perfect land for hiking. There is a lovely arctic birch forest, called

Hallormsstaaskgur, with colourful flowers that decorate the forestfloor. The lakes and ponds by the vast sandy coast of Hrassandur aregreat for bird watching. Around the fjords the landscape is hauntinglybeautiful with snow-streaked mountains divided by deep fjords, lushgreen valleys and fishing villages. In some places you will find desertedinlets and coves, often in dramatic settings and with an abundance ofbirds, seals, reindeer and flowers. Good hiking maps are available of thearea and accommodation is readily available in the mountain huts. Goon your own or join an organised tour with experienced guides, for anhour, a day or a week. www.east.is

Birds are abundant and the arctic flora ischaracterised by large flowers and bright colours.Among Icelanders the vicinity of Borgarfjrur is known for its greatnatural beauty and incredible hiking routes but it is still untouched bymass-tourism. This isolated region is also considered to be a centralprovince of the elves. In the lfaborg (Elves fortress) their queen haslong resided, governing and guarding her realm, whereas the Bishop

of the elves reigns in the incredible Blbjrg, a gigantic columnarbasalt wall that leads straight to the blue ocean.

ReindeerReindeer were introduced to Iceland from Norway in the 18th century,

originally for farming, but reindeer husbandry the Scandinavian style didnot tempt the Icelanders, and the animals were never domesticated.Today the wild reindeer live in East Iceland, mostly at higher elevationsin summer, but they seek lower grasslands closer to the coast in winter. While their primary habitat is in the deserted expanses by Snfell, reindeer are seen every year in the territory from Vopnafjordur in thenorth to the Glacier Lagoon. Both sexes have antlers which are shed annually. The male antlers areheavier and reach their maximum when the bulls are at their prime. The antlers can grow 2.5 cm a day, the fastest tissue growth found inmammals, and can weigh as much as 10 kg. Therefore the bulls with thebiggest antlers will shed them as soon as possible after the rut seasonin autumn. Pregnant cows on the other hand will keep their antlers

through the winter until they calve in spring. This gives them higherstatus in winter and priority to the best feeding spots.

The reindeer calves are born in the early spring in the snow-coveredhighlands while the bulls still remain in the lowland. The calves stay withthe mother for the first year. The reindeer has no natural enemies in Iceland so the population sizeis controlled with sustainable hunting. The hunting season is from July15th-Sept. 20th (from Aug. 15th in Snfell area, between Hlsln and

Jkuls in Fljtsdal), and during that period tourists should be aware ofhunters close to reindeer herds. There is a strong demand for hunting

permits, since reindeer meat is one of Icelandic natures greatestdelicacies. The reindeer leather is used for designer clothing andartefacts. The best places to view reindeer herds during the summerare the areas around Mount Snfell, in Vesturrfi and Brarrfi.Tours are available from Egilsstair.www.east.is

    NATURE RESERVES

    Vatnajkull National Park (VNP)

Vatnajkull National Park, established in 2008, is one of the largestNational Parks in Europe, covering an area of appr. 13,000 km2 (ca.13% of Iceland). The objective of the National Park is to conserve theareas landscape, biology, geological formations and cultural heritageand enable the public to experience and enjoy its nature and history. There are many places to visit and experience. The contrasts in theunique nature are magnificent. The battle between ice and fire stillrages within the National Parks boundaries. Few other places in the

world exhibit the effects of such a wide range of natural phenomena.Among highlights of the eastern territory of the national park areKverkfjll, the home of ice and fire; the oasis Hvannalindir; Snfell theancient volcano, where the reindeer roam; and Eyjabakkar, the homeof the pink-footed goose.

Getting thereThe Parks Visitor Centre, Snfellsstofa, is located at Skriuklaustur (road

    933) in Fljtsdalur valley. Most of the eastern edge of Vatnajkull glacierand its periphery can only be reached on foot, although access forvehicles to the eastern part of Vatnajkull glacier is by road (910) fromFljtsdalur by Hengifoss waterfall to the Snfell area (road F909) andfurther on towards the glacier tongue Eyjarbakkajkull (4x4). Roads lead

to Kverkfjll and Hvannalindir from the road no. 1 through Jkuldalur(923, F910, F903 and F902) and Mrudalur (F905 and F902 and F903).Scheduled buses run to Egilsstair and the airport is served by frequent

flights (www.flugfelag.is).Tours are available to the national park (www.east.is).

Snfell and around in VNPSnfell, an ancient central volcano, is the highest freestanding mountainin Iceland, reaching 1833 m above sea level. It is quite prominent in

the landscape, and on a fine day the view from the top is marvellous.Snfell, formed late in the last Ice Age, is the youngest volcano inEast Iceland, and has been dormant for thousands of years. The topis snow-covered and a number of short, steep outlet glaciers reach

down the slopes. It is relatively easy to climb the mountain from theSnfell hut, which is also the starting point for the SnfellLnsrfihiking trail. 1-2 hour guided walks in the Snfell region are availabledaily with rangers from July 12th - August 15th, starting at Snfellssklihut. To the west, the Vesturrfi wilderness reaches the river Jkuls Br and is one of the main grazing grounds for reindeer. The peaksof Nlhshnjkar fill the northern horizon with bright green moss inotherwise black sands, while the jfahnjkar peaks to the south offerfine views over the Eyjabakkar plains, the home of pink-footed geese.

Eyjabakkar in VNPEyjabakkar, south of Snfell at the edge of the Eyjabakkar glacial tongue,is a spectacular place that can only be reached on foot. It is a strangewetland formed by retreating and advancing glacier, creating pondsand small lakes. Spectacular ice caves often form under Eyjabakkajkullglacier and can be visited in late winter - early spring. The area is thehome to a great population of pink-footed goose and is a Ramsar

protectorate. Reindeer are abundant on Eyjabakkar.

HvannalindirHvannalindir, a name derived from the plant Angelicaarchangelica (hvnn sing. - hvanna pl.), is a uniqueoasis at an altitude of 640 m surrounded entirely bydeserts. It is a well-sheltered haven at the edge of alava field. The River Linda flows from the south along

the edge of the lava, nurturing its banks covered inwhite angelica and fragile alpine vegetation.

A total of 32 species of flowering plants have been found and 30 species

of birds have been observed at Hvannalindir and the surroundingarea. Six species can be considered annual nesting birds in the area:pink-footed goose, long-tailed duck, ptarmigan, purple sandpiper,red-necked phalarope and snow bunting. Hvannalindir is an importantcultural site as the ruins of an outlaws camp were found by the edgeof the Lindahraun lava field. It is widely held that the legendary outlawFjalla-Eyvindur and his consort Halla lived in the Hvannalindir area for afew years around 1767. A 1-2 hour guided walk is available daily (except

Tuesdays), with rangers from Vatnajkull National Park, from July 12th -August 15th.Kverkfjll and Hveradalur in VNPKverkfjll volcanic massive is a true home of ice andfire, where hot springs have melted a set of caves in

tongues extend from the Vatnajkull ice cap onboth sides of Kverkfjll mountains, Dyngjujkull andBrarjkull to the west and east respectively. Under

the ice, two calderas form part of the Kverkfjll ridge,at an altitude of around 1,800 m. Numerous volcaniceruptions have occurred since the ice caps melted

The river Volga flowing out frombeneath the Kverkjkull glacier is warmdue to the hot springs, which sometimescauses a formation of an ice cave, about4.5 km drive from Sigurarskli hut.Due to the constant movement of thesurging glacier, be aware of falling ice androcks. For your safety, do not go insideice caves or even close to them.

One of Icelands most powerfulhigh-temperature geothermal areas,Hveradalur valley, is located in Kverkfjllmountains at a height of some 1700m. One of the two caldera lakes wasformed in 1959 in a steam explosiveeruption due to geothermal activity. Please do not go onto the glacier unless

The coastline shows great diversity, transforming from the broad bays

of Vopnafjrur and Hrasfli in the north into the rugged and sheereastern shore with its many jagged fjords isolated from each other by

towering mountain ranges. Most of the fjords have fine sheltered naturalharbours, while the coast farther south is more exposed and prone toblocking by sand to create lagoons. There are five islands off the coast:Bjarnarey, Seley, Skrur, Andey and Papey. The geology is very Interesting. Basalt is the main rock type, but rhyolite iscommon too. Minerals, semi-precious stones and fossils are also found inmany places. The bedrock is old (13 million years) and its volcanoes areextinct, so there is little geothermal activity, apart from in Kverkfjll, though

there are a few warm springs.Rich flora typifies the valleys, but the steep mountains tend to be ratherbare. The plains include the largest forests in Iceland. The heathland

towards the interior is the natural habitat of Icelands wild reindeer. Themany lakes and rivers are the home of brown trout and arctic char and

fishing is a common family sport. East Iceland also boasts of some of thebest salmon fishing rivers.

    HISTORY & MUSEUMS

East Iceland is rich in history

History here is older than the settlement of the Nordicpeople in Iceland. The first ones could have been theRomans, looking for the legendary island of Pytheas theGreek , Ultima Thule, if not Pytheas himself, as Romancoins dating back to the first century AD were found nearDjpivogur. According to the Sagas, Irish hermits, called Papar, were already here when the Vikings came late in the 8thcentury. This is verified by place-names such as the island

Papey. A bit further south at Geithellnar, the first settlers,Inglfur Arnarson and his foster brother Hjrleifur, spent thewinter on their first expedition to Iceland. Many Norwegianchieftains followed their path and claimed land in the east.During the Middle Ages Iceland lost its independence. Thelast Icelander to surrender to the Norwegian King in the 13thcentury was the Goi who lived in Fljtsdalur. Dating from

that time is the beautifully carved door of Valjfsstaur, oneof the treasures in the National Museum. The monastery at Skriuklaustur was established at theend of the 14th century. It became a refuge to the sickand poor in difficult times when famine and epidemicsravaged the country. The monastery was closed after thereformation in 1550.The East is rich in folk tales and the supernatural lives within

them. The monsterous worm or wyrm in the lake Lagarfljtand the tales of elves and trolls give this enchanting countrya certain spellbinding charm. In 1627 Algerian pirates abducted some 110 people andsold them into slavery in Africa. The trolls and elves werehelpless against these villains, but the prophetess buried atHlmahlsi by Eskifjrur was able to protect her peoplein the fjord by thick fog and heavy waves. Thus the elves live

on, and the Eastern Fjord fog hides all sorts of beings, bethey trolls or elves.

The 19th century was prosperous due to herring fishing andwhaling and for a while the worlds largest whaling station was inMjifjrur, run by Norwegians. During this period the villages in

the Fjords began to form and Seyisfjrur got its municipal rightsin 1895. The first telegraph cable connecting Iceland to Europe wasshored in Seyisfjrur in 1906, making it a hub for international

telecommunications. The growth of the fishing villages coincidedwith the decline of agriculture, as a result of the devastating 1875eruption of Askja that buried large areas in thick ash. Consequently, many East Icelanders emigrated to America, with Vopnafjrur as

their point of departure, where the emigration centre is stationed.Fishing increased, especially in Neskaupstaur, and is still the mainsource of income in the eastern fjords, while agriculture still runsstrong, especially sheep, cattle and horses. A new addition toemployment is the large aluminium smelter in Reyarfjrur. Last but

not least there is a growing tourism industry, with the Norrna ferryharbour in Seyisfjrur and the international airport in Egilsstair.

East Iceland is a fertile area which enjoys a mild climate in thesummer, and offers rich diversity in its landscape as well as in itsfood. The fjords are numerous where mountains, ocean and smallfishing villages define the landscape. local tradition. Icelands oldest cheese Skyr is still produced accordingto the traditional, 1000 year old recipe at the Egilsstair farm. Slowfood has recognised traditional Icelandic skyr, traditional smokedlamb and fermented shark such as the one made in BorgarfjrurEystri, as a typical food of Iceland (Ark of Taste). You can encourage

the production of these traditional foods by asking for them in therestaurants and shops as you travel.

Austurland (East Iceland) is the oldest part of Iceland, the soil isvery fertile as ash from numerous volcanoes has spread over thefields for centuries. It is by definition a cold area in Iceland, meaning

that is is outside the North-Atlantic ridge and therefore short ofgeothermal energy. Agriculture in East Iceland is therefore shapedby other resources to grow food here at the 66N. The organicfarm in Vallanes has created natural conditions for their barley and

vegetables by creating shelter for them by planting forests andshelterbelts.

East Iceland has a lot to offer for a travelling gourmet. The restaurantshere are privileged in many ways. The natural surroundings from

the coast up to the mountains and plains create a memorableexperience and one can choose fromvarious, fresh and authentic ingredients

and locally produced food accordingto the season. Look out for the logo ofthe Local food network of East Icelandwhich you can find in many restaurantsand on food products from the area. The Vopnafjrdur Sagas

The Saga of Vopnafjrur takes place mostly in Vopnafjrur fromthe late 9th to the early 11th century. The saga tells of a powerstruggle between the clans at Hof and Krossavk; after conflict andbloodshed, however, tolerance and mercy finally prevail. The maincharacters of the saga are the powerful chieftains Brodd-Helgi atHof and Geitir Ltingsson at Krossavk, and their sons Vga-Bjarniand orkell. Women also play an important part in the story: thepriestess Steinvr, Halla Ltingsdttir and orgerur Silfra. All overVopnafjrur the sites of the saga can be seen; in many cases ancientrelics are visible, but little archaeological research has yet beencarried out. A dig in 2006 revealed the site of a longhouse of the

saga period adjacent to the church at Hof. A monument has beenplaced at Hof, the home of Brodd-Helgi. Vopnafjrur is an area ofgreat natural beauty and historical relics, and worth a visit.

Thelong, smooth-sided valleys ofHra, Jkuldalur, Fljtsdalur

the highlands, tend to be dryand warm and Hra (the

Shire) is considered a weatherparadise. By Icelands largestforest, Hallormsstaaskgur, youcan visit the shores of Lagarfljt lake, which is the home of the famouswyrm monster Lagarfljtsormur. Hengifoss, Icelandss second highestwaterfall (128m), drops from the highlands not far from Skriuklaustur,a historical site with ruins of a 16th century monastery, a cultural centreand a VNP centre. Mrudalur. Site of the highest farm in Iceland

at 469 m. Deep inland and including a large areaof land, Mrudalur has been inhabited almostcontinuously since the settlement. The church

there was built single-handedly by farmer JnStefnsson (1880-1971) at his own expense,in memory of his wife, and was consecrated in

the year 1949. He also painted the distinctivealtarpiece depicting the Sermon on the Mount.

Jkuldalsheii - Highland farms trail. This vast highland plateau lies 500-600 m abovesea level with alternating gravel dunes and hills, green marshlands and endless small lakes full of

trout. During the middle of the 19th century, poor people who wanted to lead independentlives inhabited the plateau as lowland farms were

too expensive. The volcano Askja buried mostof these farmlands in ash in the 1875 eruption, driving many of the poor farmers to emigrate toNorth America. Three of the most prominentauthors of the country, Halldor Laxness, JonTrausti and Gunnar Gunnarsson, based some of

their works on the experiences of those people.Experience the 19th century Iceland with a visit to

There, travellers enjoy bathingin the warm brook at an old farmhouse site. The small warm brook cascades from a cliff in asmall waterfall, making a natural shower perfectfor bathing. The remote valley was only inhabitedfor a few years as it became the site of a great

tragedy at the beginning of the 20th century.

Eiar used to be one of its localitys mostimportant farms and church. The agriculturalschool was founded here in 1883. Efforts are beingmade to develop a centre for arts and culture here.Around Eiar are attractive trails towards Lagarfljtriver and around the small lakes and ponds, where
