President’s Message 14th October, 2015

Half horse half archer, this Sagittarian is unfortunately allergic to horses. Thank goodness Sue Spence, founder and facilitator of Horses Helping Humans Education Centre doesn’t share my affliction. Although Sue ran over time, members didn’t seem to mind, since her work is fascinating. Mandy Akehurst, Stacey and her daughter Bella from Therapy and Dance were also welcome guests after their success in the Cheer Leading competition held at the Convention Centre in September. $2,950 of Carousel funds were donated for uniforms in which the group performed. Mandy presented our Club with a beautifully framed one together with medals and autographs of the members of TAD. I am hoping to find a way to display this at the Carousel.

Next week, head of Gold Coast Health, Ian Langdon is our guest speaker. He has extensive board experience in a wide range of companies and held various positions in tertiary education. With so many members away, I would appreciate your help with numbers. Therefore please invite wives, partners, prospective members, friends and family. Ian is an interesting speaker and will not disappoint. From Josh Budgen, our Exchange Student. Dear Graham and Marion, I’m so sorry I haven’t been in contact for such a long time. As I received your email I was travelling with my host family and then unfortunately my whole email account was either hacked or got a virus, so I was unable to access it. This is however my new account and address: [email protected] I saw from Graham’s facebook some of your travel and it looked absolutely amazing! How was it? I’m currently at my third and last host family and the exchange is flying by now at an unbelievably scary pace! Needless to say, I’m having the time of my life!!! There are so many things to explain, I really don’t know where to start! My first host parents organised for me to play in the Schwerin Youth Symphony Orchestra and after the first rehearsal in my first week in Schwerin, I had already made some good friends, who were all extremely welcoming and nice, completely opposite to the reception I firstly received from my class... The concert master, now my best friend, asked me if I wanted to play in the state youth orchestra, which had a 2 week music camp with concerts! The conductor also happened to be an Australian violinist from the Berlin Philharmonic and the soloist was also one of the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic! All in all it was an amazing experience and really set down the foundations for many friendships this year! Upon arriving, it was extremely cold (for me) and after my first day of school my phone was stolen in the city and then I got lost for one hour trying to come back home. However the exchange has just gone up-hill from there! My first host family always took me on weekends on little trips to surrounding cities and as they visited their daughter in Paraguay I stayed with their family friends and celebrated a very German Easter! Shortly afterwards we had our Eurotour! All in all we visited Dresden, Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Venice, Rome, Innsbruck, Regensburg and Berlin – it was sooo much fun and amazing to visit so many old, cultured and beautiful cities! My city and Rotary club are also absolutely fantastic here! There are 4 other Rotary exchange students in my town and we attend Rotary meetings every week. Our councillors, a married couple, are always there to support us and twice a month (sometimes even 4 times if we all have time!) we meet at their house for dinner and then we play games. The club is also very active for exchange students in the sense that we also have a 2 hour German lesson every week and they always welcome us to events and trips. In June we went with our councillors to Weimar for the weekend for a historical and cultural experience, and in one week we will be travelling to Denmark with our club for a youth sporting weekend! My second host family lived about 30 minutes outside from the city in a small village. The lake there was of drinking quality and as the weather got warmer we would swim there. The landscape here in the north is extremely beautiful and shaped mostly by the movement and melting of the ice millions of years ago as the ice receded. I also got to see lots of the coast line in this time and see the vast difference of the Baltic Sea with our Oceans in Australia. As the Summer holidays started I had 2 weeks with my Orchestra again for our summer camp and concerts. Straight after this I changed my host family for the last time and we drove 18 hours to France!! For 2 weeks we stayed at Les Sables on the Atlantic Coast, where we went to the beach every day and collected rare shells. As we came back we stayed one week in Brandenburg and went hiking and met most of my host mothers family – definitely one of the busiest holidays I have ever had! Now I’m just trying to enjoy the time as much as possible. It’s crazy to think that I only have roughly 3 more months left, but I’m just trying to make the most of every moment! I’m currently studying for a German exam at the end of the year and also applying for scholarships a UQ, so it’s all very busy! Please send my thanks and regards to the club and I hope that this year has been successful so far! Josh
