PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Rotarians and friends, thank you for your support at our change over dinner on Tuesday evening. It was
fantastic to see so many former members, past district governors, assistant governors, wives and partners
celebrate Marion’s year of dedication and hard work. I liken Marion to a beautiful swan. She appears to
do everything calmly and effortlessly, but underneath the surface is some serious work happening.
Marion and I received an email from PDG Wendy Scarlett congratulating us all “for a really lovely
changeover.” She congratulated Marion for a most successful year and wished me well.
I appreciate the good wishes for my second attempt as president. This time I am better informed after the
Rotary Leadership Institute training and I have more time. With such an experienced board and the
expertise within our club, I expect 2015/16 will be another good year.
District Governor Elect, Michael Irving and Roz are away enjoying their last trip for a while. Michael
has done a marvellous job putting together a history of the 70 years of the Rotary Club of Southport.
Arrangements are in progress for celebrating the anniversary on the 25th
of August. We are hoping to
have as many former members attend as possible. If you can assist in tracking down people who might
be interesting in coming, please let me know. I am sure Graham Cooper would appreciate any contacts
you might have in the media as well.
I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday.

The Rotary International theme for
2014-15 is ‘light up Rotary’. I am always amazed at the diversity of ways that Rotarians achieve such a
goal. Let me share with you two of Rotary’s less well-known activities that certainly “light up Rotary”.
A Rotary fellowship is a group of Rotarians, partners and Rotaractors who join together to share a
common interest. There are many rotary fellowships such as the accountants’ fellowship, the fellowship
of flying Rotarians, the wine fellowship and dare I mention it the cricket fellowship. However did you

know that there is an “international marathon fellowship of Rotarians”? It started in 2005 when more than
200 Rotarians competed in the Paris marathon. 2005 was of course a special year in Rotary, and a group
of the Rotarian runners with the encouragement of a district governor in Paris arranged a dinner for the
Rotarians to celebrate both the centenary of Rotary and the running of the marathon. They gave the
proceeds from the dinner to polio eradication. The marathon fellowship chartered the next year at the
Berlin marathon and every year since then members of the fellowship compete in one international
marathon, meet for a fellowship dinner and donate to polio plus. For those of you who have an appetite
for marathon running, it is too late for this year, but their next fellowship meeting is at the Budapest
marathon in October 2016.
The second “do you know question?” Is what non-governmental organisation holds the highest
consultative status offered by the United Nations (UN)? You’re right-it is Rotary. Rotary’s involvement
even predates the existence of the UN when clubs from 21 nations organised a conference in London in
1942 that was the impetus for what we know as UNESCO (United Nations economic, scientific, cultural
organisation). Later on in 1945, a delegation of 49 Rotarians helped draft the charter of the United
Nations in San Francisco and this generated an enduring partnership with the UN. This partnership was
enhanced with the advent of Rotary’s campaign against polio and Rotary now has a whole network of
representatives to the UN and its specialised agencies such as the World Food Programme, the African
Union, the European Union and the league of Arab states. The champion of this strong Rotary
representation at the United Nations was Sylvan Barnett jr, a member of the Rotary of New York and a
pioneer in international public relations. He was the first representative to the UN and for 20 years he was
a model for all those who followed.
Chair David thanked Graham and called on DG Wendy Scarlett to respond. PDG Wendy Scarlett responded by congratulating Graham and Marion for their tireless dedication to Southport Rotary Club, and gave praise to the Southport Rotary Club for the wonderful work they do locally and overseas, thanks to the Carousel and the money it raises. Lea Rickwood and Allan Thompson are presented with badges for completing the Rotary Leadership Institute course. Chair David called on PP Tony Stenton to propose a toast to Rotary wives and partners PP Tony Stenton proposed a toast to Rotary wives and partners Ann Penfold responded - noting the activities that have occurred throughout the year including Joan Cronin’s 100th Birthday. The incoming Rotary Partners position is to be filled by Eve Scotte. Sergeant Duncan – donation to polio Heads & Tails winner – Paul Boles Raffles – Sam Doumany & Helen Weathered Chair David introduced President Marion Jones and PP Greg Dux to present Awards: The following were awarded a certificate for 100% attendance: Leanda Cooper, Graham Jones, Peter Overell, Lionel Perry, Tony Gardner, Mervyn Powell, Lea Rickwood, Allan Thompson, Lambert Wang, Duncan Plastow & Michael Irving who thanked Marion for being a “Wonderwoman”.

President Marion gave her Farewell Speech:
Our theme for this year has been “light up Rotary” which I believe we have accomplished through our community funding of charities as well as our 2 overseas projects. We have been able to support a drainage project at the Bairo Pite clinic in East Timor and continue to help with education of children in Indonesia .The Broadbeach carousel continues to be the source of considerable funding but it is a huge commitment to run it. Our thanks to all those members, friends and volunteers who help out on the roster. This enables us to fund a great number of local charities as well as our own Rotary programmes .We have reached most of our goals set at the beginning of the year. Membership has been maintained though we have lost 3 members while gaining 3 members. We have given excellent support to the Rotary Foundation and also to polio plus. We have continued our sponsorship of young people to Rotary’s wonderful youth programmes and we have supported our Southport Rotaract club. Our guest speakers have been interesting and varied and we have also focused on Rotary’s programmes. We have enjoyed having other Rotary clubs join us on several occasions for special evenings with high profile guest speakers. PDG Graham is working on starting a satellite club at Griffith University with staff, students and faculty. They are also linking in the staff at the GC university hospital as well as some Rotaractors. This will provide an opportunity for younger members to join Rotary and have a different meeting format. A great initiative. Three of our members have graduated from the Rotary leadership institute run by our district with leadership from PDG Graham. I believe that training of our club leaders is important to provide for a strong Rotary club in the future. We are so proud to have Michael Irving as the DGE. He will be the third DG from this club- a great achievement that shows the quality of our membership. We were the first Rotary club chartered on the GC and will celebrate our 70th anniversary on August 25. Southport Rotary has done much to “light up Rotary” both here locally and overseas in those 70 years. My thanks to PDG Wendy for her leadership and support and to AG Rohan for his encouragement too .Thanks to the board for this past year for all your hard work, especially for secretary Leanda for compiling our annual report which you are welcome to take with you. Thanks to club members for your support throughout the year .Special thanks to Graham for all his good advice and help in so many ways. I wish Lea and her board all the very best for the coming year as we all endeavour to “be a gift to the world” Change over banner – “be a gift to the world” - thank you by Marion Jones Chair David called on PDG Wendy to induct 2015 -2016 President Lea Rickwood PDG Wendy thanked Marion for the work she has achieved in the past 12 months and placed the Presidents’ collar on Lea. Thank you all very much for sharing this evening with Marion and myself. When I was President in
2008-2009 I followed PDG Graham Jones and now Marion. As most of you know it is hard keeping up
with the Joneses.
Nevertheless it is an honour to follow in their footsteps and the footsteps of many outstanding individuals
who have led the Rotary Club of Southport into its 70th
year.

wives and partners here tonight. Let’s do it all again on the 25th
of August when we celebrate our 70th
anniversary.

an amazing feat.
THANK YOU Southport Rotary for helping us. The staff and Dr Dan are so
excited about it all.
Our relationship with the new ministry of health is improving and we are
working towards employing three Timorese Doctors to improve the longevity of
the Clinic.
Our next in country board meeting is Oct 17 & 18 - and we would welcome
visitors with open arms.
Rest easy in the knowledge that many people lives will be changed because of
