PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

ACTING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

While Marion and Graham enjoy some well deserved rest and recreation, I am having the opportunity to

relearn the role of president before my year starts. Some things have changed since I was president in

2008/09, but as always clubs are only as strong as their members. I would like to thank you all for your

support, which I hope will continue into 2015/16.

Our RYDA speaker, Darrell Brown from the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise, will follow on from Michael

Irving as District Governor of District 9640 in 2017-1018. His title until July 1 2015 is District Governor

Nominee Designate (don’t you love Rotary). I am sure he will be an excellent D.G. and join all Rotarians

in congratulating him.

I will be attending the morning tea for Joan Cronin’s 100th

Birthday on Wednesday the 15th

of April on

behalf of the Rotary Club of Southport. For those who missed signing her card, I shall bring it again next

Tuesday night.

Please note that our vocational visit to the Gold Coast Brewery on the 28th

of April is for wives, partners

and friends. It is not at the Southport Golf Club, so don’t go there! I bet someone does.

Save the date: - The Rotaract Club of Southport is having their 4th

annual trivia night at the Southport

Bowls Club on Saturday May 2nd

. I will need some good trivia people to help me make up a table

because this blonde is challenged in matters of trivia (and some might say other departments as well).

More details soon.

I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday when Cherrill McKay will be telling us about the Gold

Coast Business Awards, which is now into its 20th

year.

Lea Rickwood

Sport (Reds supporters, AFL tipping, golf).

Missing the secret greeter.

Members travelling plans.

Housing renovations including kip loadings.

Colourful ties. Heads & Tails Tracey N. Raffle Alan T. Guest Speaker: Darrell Brown addressed the Club on the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program. General and important points included the following:

RYDA acts under the guidelines of Road Safety Education Limited (RSE).

Program was suggested by Graham Jones when D.G. elect.

Program overall targets 19-25 year olds. This age group over-represented in road fatalities.

RYDA targets essentially Year 11 students.

Group 7 clubs are currently involved in organising, part funding.

Other funding from Council and participants.

Program is evidence based and age relevant.

Feedback is highly positive.

A number of private and state schools participate in program.

1 day program segments are presented by ‘outside experts’.

If more schools take up program, additional clubs will need to be involved (there are other groups offering road safety programs as well as Rotary). Vote of Thanks: Moved by Duncan P. Close of Meeting: Lea closed meeting at 7:30pm. Greg Dux.

Rotary question. Name one speaker at the Goondiwindi Conference.

Thoughts for the week ON AN airplane flight, I was skimming through a colorful safety- information card written in French, Spanish and English. I pointed out to my dozing husband that the French need just one word - amerrissage - to say "landing on water." "In English you cannot express the thought 'landing on water' with just one word," I said. "Splash!" he murmured sleepily. ON A cross-country flight I tried a technique a friend had recommended for controlling fear. I asked the flight attendant for a magazine, some paper and a pencil, and proceeded to copy the words on each page of the magazine. It was tedious, but effectively distracting. Several articles later, the attendant approached me. "I admire your thrift," she said. "But please, just keep the magazine compliments of the airline." I WAS flying home to spend Christmas with my parents, my suitcase stuffed with gifts. As it bumped down the baggage ramp, it half opened and my tooth-brush fell out. I hastily retrieved my suitcase but couldn't catch up with

the toothbrush. As it continued around the baggage carrousel I overheard a passenger say, "My, that person travels light." A blonde was bragging about her knowledge of state capitals. She proudly says, "Go ahead, ask me, I know all them." A friend says, "OK, what's the capital of Wisconsin?" The blonde replies, "Oh, that's easy: W." A blonde suspects her boyfriend of cheating on her, so she goes out and buys a gun. She goes to his apartment unexpectedly and when she opens the door she finds him in the arms of a redhead. Well, the blonde is really angry. She opens her purse to take out the gun, and as she does so, she is overcome with grief. She takes the gun and puts it to her head. The boyfriend yells, "No, honey, don't do it." The blonde replies, "Shut up, you're next!" They just buried a salesman named Cripps Who married , on one of his trips A widow named Block He then died of shock When he found there were nine little chips! Fred has a musical nature He can yodel, whistle and hum He goes out fit as a fiddle And comes home tight as a drum. I was born on the first of the month , so they called me Bill. WANTED: Young lady assistant who can type. One who has no bad habits and is willing to learn.
