Parish Directory Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, on this Weekend’s Tragedies Aug 4, 2019

Today the Archdiocese of Chicago mourns and prays for the victims of yesterday’s gun massacres in El Paso and Dayton. We stand with their loved ones demanding an end to this deadly status quo.

We reject the idea that living in America means risking being gunned down by a killer wielding an assault weapon designed for mass killing.

We refuse to become inured to the horrible idea that families must calculate the risk of violent death when considering how to spend a summer weekend.

We cannot tolerate a society in which parents have to wonder whether the child they dropped off in the morning will become another statistic or if their own lives will end that day in their place of work.

Mass shootings are not an inevitability. All human beings have the right to live without violence. To behave otherwise is to advance a lie. Stopping this lie begins with holding accountable our elected officials who have done nothing to address gun violence. Inaction only cements the idea that these tragedies are acceptable and that the weapons that enable them are simply common features of American life today.

But we also need to hold accountable those in society, including some leaders, who fuel these violent acts by dividing humanity through hateful rhetoric. This must stop — along with the silence of our elected officials who have failed to condemn hate speech, for they are the very ones who have sworn to keep our nation safe.

We know that together we can do something to stem the flow of blood. And we call on our elected officials to show us that they know it too.

Clothing Drive As a part of the Caritas Project for St. Rita High School, Pat Cranley and Nick Adent will be running a collection of all types of gently used or new clothes for a homeless shelter located in Aurora between August 3rd and August 11th. The Caritas Project allows St. Rita

students to create their own event or drive that will have a positive impact on their community. The homeless shelter Hesed House was chosen because they do not get the same volume of resources that are provided to Chicago homeless shelters. Please bring in as much as possible to give to this homeless shelter. Bins with the Hesed House logo will be placed by the entrances of the Church and donations can be brought in during these weeks and will be collected and brought to the shelter as soon as the drive is complete. Thank you.

If you have any questions, please contact us at:

Holy Day of Obligation August 15, 2019

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass times are: Wednesday, August 14th at 7:00 p.m., and Thursday, August 15th at 6:30 & 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Attention School Families Beginning with your August/September Sunday envelope packet, your Sunday envelopes will no longer be pink. They will be white. Your five-digit envelope number will not change. The reason for the color change has to do with the cost of postage. The packets with the pink envelopes did not meet the minimum quantity required for the Non-Profit Organization postage rate.

Block Party Season St. Christina is looking to take Mass to the streets. If your block is considering having a block party, we would

love to help coordinate an outdoor Mass into your summer celebration. If interested, please call the Rectory, 773-779-7181.

August Homebound Meals Report: Pretty Pork Potpourri August was the month for Pork Fest as each of the main items featured pork in three different forms. First there was creamy corn chowder with vegetables, golden farm-fresh corn and chunks of luscious ham. Next was a fresh bacon, lettuce and tomato salad with a container of salad dressing. And then — the pièce de résistance — a generous helping of slow oven-roasted pulled pork. A fresh bun and container of coleslaw made the entree a sight to behold. What is summer without watermelon? You have to have watermelon. So to top off this pork fest, each meal consisted of two slices of juicy fresh watermelon along with a chocolate chip cookie. The cookies were fresh baked by Maggie Keith and Noelle Montgomery. Thanks, ladies! Each meal also included bread provided by Panera’s Day-End Dough Nation program. Thanks to all the volunteers who showed up to help. Although we were smaller in number because many were on vacation, the chopping, peeling, cutting, pork-pulling, and cooking went very smoothly. A special thank-you to Rob and Shane for their behind-the-scenes efforts. And, as always, kudos to the drivers. Without them, this delicious meal would not make it to the tables of our homebound parishioners. Watch The Sign for details about our September meal, which will be prepared the weekend of September 7th & 8th. God bless! St. Christina’s Homebound Meals Ministry

Archdiocese of Chicago Dear Generous Donors to the Archdiocese of Chicago,

Driven by a historic outpouring of generosity, the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign became one of the most successful fundraising programs in the history of the Catholic Church. More than 77,000 donors have pledged over $420 million to the campaign, far exceeding the original goal of $350 million. To date, $215 million has been collected on the pledges, most of which are five-year pledges.

Your donations to the Archdiocese are having a tremendous impact on our parishes, schools, communities, and ministries throughout Cook and Lake Counties. Your generosity has strengthened our schools and made Catholic school education possible for thousands of families. You have helped engage young people in faith formation, trained parish leaders, and much more. Your gifts will continue to enrich our local Church for generations to come.

You may have seen recent reports in the media raising questions about the financial management of the To Teach Who Christ Is (TTWCI) campaign. We want to reassure you that your donations are being used for the purposes set forth in the campaign case statement and that your intentions have been honored.

Facts about the TTWCI campaign you should know include:

• Campaign funds are used only for designated campaign programs or other purposes as specified by donors.

• Campaign initiatives are funded according to donor intent and reflect the amount of funds collected thus far. This means that at any given time amounts distributed to programs can differ from the original goals for each program as a result of donor intent, timing of collections, and the mix of parish results for parish campaigns.

Faithfully yours,

Brendan Keating Chief Development Officer See next week’s bulletin for the continuation of this article.

On Short-Term Faith and Long-Term Faith Copyright 2019 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Per Tagore, “Faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark.” Per Augustine,

“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” And per

Aquinas, “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary; to one without faith, no explanation is

possible” (which is attached-at-the-hip in my mind with Voltaire’s “To believe in God is impossible,

not to believe in him is absurd,” but in a fashion that I can’t even begin to understand). I am

reminded of all these great thinkers’ thoughts on faith as I consider the readings for today. This may

be the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, but the scripture passages in front of us today are anything but.

The first reading from Wisdom (“The night of the passover was known beforehand to our

fathers, that, with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they put their faith, they might have courage.

Your people awaited the salvation of the just and the destruction of their foes. For when you

punished our adversaries, in this you glorified us whom you had summoned. For in secret the holy

children of the good were offering sacrifice and putting into effect with one accord the divine

institution”) is short, but taken out of context. Here, the “destruction” references the destruction of

Egypt’s firstborns during the Exodus. The Israelites had faith in God, and God delivered.

The second reading from Hebrews spells faith out even more clearly, beginning with “Faith is

the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” The Hebrews author then goes

on to cite several examples of faith displayed by Abraham. Consider, “By faith Abraham obeyed

when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.” Consider, “By faith

he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age — and Sarah herself was

sterile — for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy.” And of course

consider, “By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the

promises was ready to offer his only son...”

The way I see it, there’s short-term faith and long-term faith. It’s one thing — and an easier

thing — to have faith in the short term. The early Christians were rooted in short-term faith. They

thought the Parousia was right around the corner. Jesus today is talking long-term faith, though,

praising the servant who prudently awaits his master’s return. But, Jesus says, “if that servant says

to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming’ and begins to beat the menservants and the

maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s master will come on an unexpected

day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely.’” Just as that servant should have

known better, so should we all. If we’ve signed up for discipleship — and we have — let’s live it as

best we can. After all, per Jesus, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still

more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Gulp.
