One of the seven ancient capitals and the key scenictourism and historical culture cities in China, Hangzhouonce was applauded as “the most splendid and luxurious cityin the world" by Marco Polo. For more than a millennium,artists, poets, traders, and explorers have been drawn to theidyllic scenery of Hangzhou’s vast West Lake, a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site.

Thanks to the lucrative manufacturing and tech industries(Alibaba’s headquarters), the city is one of China’swealthiest. The busy airport now accepts private­jetlandings, and as Hangzhou’s residents and visitors havebecome increasingly sophisticated, its hotels andrestaurants have followed suit. The most notable hotel is theriverside Azure Qiantang, a Luxury Collection hotel designedby Pierre­Yves Rochon. In March this year, the 417­roomMidtown Shangri­La Hangzhou opened within steps of WestLake. Do not leave the city without paying a visit to the Longjingtea fields, the source of China's most famous tea. Two hoursoutside the city in Xinfeng village is the Hidden House, arustic hideaway with giant outdoor hot tubs, hearty home­style cooking, and picturesque stone pathways on which tostroll through the surrounding bamboo forest.
