For my rst time away from home to study, Burgmann was the best choice. It is modern and safe, and the community of students is like a family away from home. e facilities and services are excellent, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable.

Living in the Village at Burgmann is an experience that you will never forget. You may be involved in all sorts of rewarding activities and form supportive friendships, many of which should last a lifetime.

Why Burgmann?

2

Our community engenders a simple purpose – that everyone achieves their highest possible potential, academically and personally.

Our learning community is based on ‘shared learning’ amongst residents. Academic support is both received and given by all. We oer our residents the opportunity to balance study with the many other interests available to explore, whether they are intellectual, social, sporting, religious, political or artistic. e choices are yours to pursue.

Burgmann emphasises individual freedom and growth on the one hand and collegiate commitment, responsibility and contribution on the other. is balance is integral to creating a truly supportive and vibrant learning community.

Burgmann College is proud to be the only residence on the ANU campus where both the Principal and Deputy Principal live on-site. Together with our Residential Advisors (RAs) and Village Community Coordinator, there is always someone on-site to assist residents – no matter the time of day or night.

Burgmann is a single community with no hierarchies of residential membership. Residents have a say in running the College.

THE VILLAGEe Village at Burgmann is more than just a place to live - it is a vibrant community of postgraduate residents in a stunning corner of the ANU campus next to Lake Burley Grin. e Village has the National Botanic Gardens as its backyard and everything on campus is only a short walk or bike ride away. Canberra’s city centre (called Civic) is within walking distance and provides plenty of restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs to visit whilst you take a break from your study. Public transport is readily available with a bus stop out the front of the College.

e Village prides itself on its community spirit. ere are many opportunities to get involved in sports and arts activities in an environment with a strong culture of participation. Regular social activities provide an opportunity to relax with fellow residents.

How did you nd coming to Burgmann?

As a medical student it was great for nding a bunch of close friends from my cohort. e medical tutorials put on by the second years were very helpful.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

Denitely the location! It is the closest accommodation to the medical school, 5 minutes from the ANU gym, just in front of Black Mountain and the Botanic Gardens and a quick walk to Lake Burley Grin.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

I didn’t realise the sense of community that the Postgraduate Village would have! ere is always someone down in the tute room or watching TV to have a chat to. Every week there is a BBQ, a wine and cheese night or a gathering of some sort to socialise and hang out with the villagers. It’s a really friendly and fun place.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

ere are heaps of opportunities to meet people, especially in those rst few weeks. I really encourage people to get involved.

Tell us about a typical week for you at College?

I am a Residential Advisor (RA) this year so I help to organise little events around the village. We have dinner provided down in the dining room once a week. is week, the village are heading over to Fellows Bar after dinner for a drink and a catch up.

How do you feel you might be dierent for having lived at Burgmann?

It’s helped living at Burgmann because I have grown to appreciate the value of a sense of community in a shared living space. e diversity in the Village certainly helps give this community aspect a dynamic vibe, and it’s something I believe everyone benets from.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

I was in the Burgmann Band this year. All twelve of us has a great time getting to know each other, choosing songs and practicing. It all paid o in the end because we won the inter-college competition!

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmann?

Get involved and have some fun!

How did you nd coming to Burgmann?

Moving interstate, I was initially quite nervous and anxious. Looking back now, I am glad that I chose to move into a college like Burgmann. e on campus convenience and the sense of community made me feel welcome, and certainly helped smooth a very dicult transition period.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

For me, the best aspect has to be the sense of community that exists in the Village. People are pleasant to one another, there’s always social events where you can meet new people and relax from the stresses of your courses. When there aren’t any events on, there’s mostly fellow villagers around to watch sport with collectively.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

Being a postgraduate village, I did not expect there to be so many social opportunities. ey work really well, because, you always have the choice to stay back and study if required, and attend whichever you please.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

Being a Residential Advisor (“RA”) this year, my typical week usually involves helping organise/promote an event in the Village or at the college in general. Most weeks certainly involve one or two occasions of watching sport in the lounge or the common room with fellow residents, and that is something I very much look forward to for relaxation. A game of pool or table tennis also is usually a regular occurrence.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

Being an RA takes up a lot of time, but it is something I certainly enjoy. All the RAs at the village truly care about the residents and we all want to ensure the best possible year for all of us. rough social events, eective pastoral care and a general vibe of positivity, this has worked well so far.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmann?

ANU is an exceptional university, and most people applying are from interstate.

In terms of accommodation, if you are looking for an on campus lifestyle, at least for your rst year, there is no better place than the Burgmann postgraduate village. e facilities provided by Burgmann are excellent. Above all else, the sense of community that exists is unmatched across the colleges at the ANU. I would denitely recommend applying here.

Burgmann Support

e College facilitates academic assistance for postgraduates through a peer learning community.

Our peer learning community is led by the Principal, Deputy Principal, Postgraduate Village Community Coordinator and Residential Advisors (RAs). RAs are residents appointed by the College to undertake pastoral and leadership duties and to lead the Academic Assistance Network. ey come under the supervision of the Deputy Principal.

ere is an RA in every block in the Village. RAs will make themselves known to residents in their block and around the College. ey oer assistance in a variety of ways:

• providing general advice on study, research and workload management

• connecting residents with peers studying in the same subject area

• suggesting strategies for more eective study techniques

• caring for individual’s issues, and helping to nd the best ways and people to assist block, group and individual care and well-being as well as conict resolution.

RAs are residents with strong academic performance and a demonstrated caring attitude, and will be able to help you adjust to your new home here at Burgmann.

Each RA is responsible for a portfolio. Portfolios have either an academic or a community development focus. ere is also an opportunity to have your work published in the Burgmann Journal, the College’s peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal published annually. See eview.anu.edu.au/journals and select ‘Burgmann Journal’.

e Burgmann Residents’ Association (BRA) is the organisation run by a committee of residents to support all those who live here at Burgmann, in all facets of their college lives. BRA organises and initiates a wide range of activities and events for residents to get involved in, providing essential social, artistic and sporting activities. e committee also ensures that all residents are given a voice in College matters, acting as an important bridge between the College administration and the residents. BRA provides the voice for the residents in the running of the College through communication with the Principal and the College Council.

A sample of events and activities organised by BRA:

BRA Sports Reps make sure that no matter whether you're a sporting superstar, or the kid who would run away from the ball in a soccer match, you'll become involved in College sport either as a participant, or kitted out in Burgmann colours supporting the team on the eld, court, track or wherever!

Burgmann competes in the Interhall Sports Shield, an annual competition in which all the residential halls, colleges and lodges at ANU participate. Burgmann has a strong record of placing highly in this competition. ere are plenty of sports to get involved in. Sports include: AFL, Rugby, Soccer, Volleyball, Hockey, Softball, Ultimate Disc as well as many others.

Keep an eye out for Inward Bound (IB) which is held in the rst semester every year. IB is an interhall competition where multiple divisions from each hall, college and lodge on the ANU campus battle it out to see who has the best endurance and orienteering skills. Blindfolded and dropped in an unknown location in the bush, the divisions race to get to the IB end point.

How did you nd coming to Burgmann?

Initially, I knew it would be a big move from Sydney to Canberra, uprooting myself at home to living in an entirely new place and studying an entirely dierent course. I was relieved to see, however, that Burgmann provided plentiful resources about moving in, and the information provided highlighted the supportive and engaging environment here at Burgmann. During the rst week, I was greeted by the sta at Burgmann, met several lovely students, and already felt that Burgmann was going to be a great place for me!

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

Whilst I love being extremely close to the medical school (closest residence on campus to the med building!) and have enjoyed living in both a 5 and 2 bedroom apartment, the community at Burgmann is what makes it so dierent to the other halls. e students are incredibly engaged and supportive, but they’re also here to get more out of a college than just a bedroom – we’ve found a great balance between study and socialising! e events that are run by the RAs break up the university week, and are reinvigorating when you’ve had a long day at Uni!

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

I didn’t expect to meet so many people, and to be supported by the year 2 medical students as I transitioned into medicine. e amount of support from the other residents was very unexpected!

Tell us about a typical week for you at College?

I have university from Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm. However, I will always pop into Burgmann for lunch (it’s only 500m away from the med school) and come back if I have a long break between classes. One night of the week we have dinner at the College dining hall, and I’ll typically spend an hour or two chatting to the other residents after dinner! During the term time, we also normally have an event during the week, such as a dessert night, a BBQ, or another time when we can unwind. I’ll also inevitably nd an opportunity to play some tennis or soccer with some of the other Burgies. On weekends, I tend to spend some time with my roommate, or go out to lunch/dinner with some of the other residents.

How do you feel you might be dierent for having lived at Burgmann?

I don’t think I would have met so many incredible people, and developed friendships that I know will last forever.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

In my rst year of Burgmann, I played in the touch and soccer teams in the inter-hall competitions. is year, I’m hoping to get involved in Inward Bound!

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmann?

Be ready to get the most out of Burgmann, as it has a whole lot to oer!

How did you nd coming to Burgmann?

Burgmann has a lovely open garden-like feel to it. People are friendly and there is always someone to talk with at any time. After eight months travelling in Australia and overseas, it was great to move from interstate and have somewhere to call 'home'. In Postgraduate accommodation, there were many opportunities, BBQ's, dinners, Sunday morning teas, to meet fellow residents at the start of semester. It was a great welcome by both fellow students and the helpful sta. Having supported my own children through tertiary studies, it was wonderful to settle and face the challenges of Life as a mature-age student. Burgmann community is very supportive.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

Whether sta or students, everyone has been helpful and friendly. My studio apartment has been within walking distance of all campus venues; Archaeology Department, Art School (ceramics), theatres and coee stops. So lovely and relaxing walking through the trees and along Sullivan's Creek during the day and along the well-lit pathways at night.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

My room has been cool through summer and warm in winter. e window opens onto grassland where many native birds feed. We sometimes see the occasional kangaroo feeding. I didn't expect to feel like I was in the bush in the middle of our capital city, Canberra.

Tell us about a typical week for you at College?

I have lectures, tutorials and practicals every day during the week, some continuing into the evening. Weekends are a time to take advantage of the many artistic venues around Canberra, the Farmer's Market, as well as ceramics classes in the Yass Valley. It has been very important to nd a balance between studies and leisure. is is possible living on campus at Burgmann, being within walking distance of the Botanical Gardens, paths around Lake Burley Grin and the restaurants on the edge of campus - all help provide that relaxation and balance.

How do you feel you might be dierent for having lived at Burgmann?

Burgmann has helped provide a sense of place and friendship whilst facing the many challenges of university life.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

I enjoy working in the vegetable garden with fellow residents, supporting Burgmann's Play, attending dinners and making new residents feel welcome as one of the Summer RAs.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmann?

Accept and make the most of all life's opportunities.
