The Christmas holidays are fast approaching and the Club is ready. The House Committee, Jim and the staff are busy transforming the

Club into our own wonderland. December will be a busy month and there are many events scheduled to bring us all good cheer.

The grounds around the Club will transform into the holiday spirit soon after Thanksgiving is over. The boat lighting will brighten up the water front and provide the perfect holiday picture as you cross the Hampton Blvd Bridge.

Santa is due to arrive on December 9th and he will be ready to listen to all of the children’s wish list. We are not sure how he is going to arrive. He seems to surprise us each year.

The fishing tournament is also on December 9th, so hopefully there will be a lot of fresh catch on the docks by the end of the day.

No sooner has the staff covered the pools for the season and we find ourselves preparing for the holidays. Santa will make his annual visit to the Club on Sunday, December 9th for the Children’s Christmas Party. Please bring an unwrapped gift for donation for admit-tance to the event. The Doorway Singers will also entertain us again at brunch on Sunday, December 16th and 23rd. Reservations are suggested.

Holiday catering pick ups will be available until 2:00 on Monday, December 24th. Please place your orders in a timely manner. The Deck and Dining Room will open on Monday, December 31st for our Annual New Year’s Eve family buffet. The regular menu will not be offered.

All Club restaurants will be closed January 1st through 7th for annual maintenance and vacation. We hope to do some needed repairs in the kitchen and install some energy efficient glass on the second floor.

“Slapwater” has been booked for the Annual Meeting and Membership Party on January 19th.

Santa-rific PartySanta is on his way south and will arrive at the Club Sunday, Dec. 9 to host our annual Chil-dren’s Christmas Party.

The Big Guy in the Red Suit (We heard Mrs.Claus had to let it out a tad this year) is hoping for a large turnout of youngsters to climb on his lap and let him know what’s on their list.

As always Santa’s mode of arrival is top secret. Could be by air, land or sea. So, keep an eye out. Games and treats will be plentiful. Moms, Dads and grandparents can help themselves to light hors d’oeuvres. Adult beverages will also be available.

Please bring an unwrapped toy or a $10 dona-tion as admission. The Deck will open at 5 p.m. for those who wish to stay for dinner.

around the ClubAll in the Family

When Tara Ramsey Wright, husband Archie and their three children joined the club two years ago, it was inevitable that most of the Ramsey clan was sure to follow.

The Ramseys arrived several months ago. That’s patriarch Jerry (aka “Grand Dude”), wife Sherry (“Chookie”), and daughters, Lara Matela, Lucy Vinson and her husband Scott, and six more grand kids.

The Ramseys don’t just “club” together. They travel in a pack. Except for son James and his family in Maryland, they all live in Larchmont within blocks of each other, have dinner together several times a week at the Ramsey’s huge dining room table, vacation together and all worked in the family businesses.

No wonder the Ramseys’ home is known as “Do Drop Inn.”

Lara was the driving force in making joining the club a family affair.

“All our children’s friends seemed to be members and there are so many activities and opportunities for kids to learn here,” said Lara. “It’s good for kids to belong to something.”

And as Grand Dude said, “If the grand kids are there, I’m there. So here we are.”

All 16 of them.

While the kids have gotten into sailing, tennis and swimming, Jerry and others work out at the Fitness Center and the family often stays for dinner.

“It’s been great for all of us,” said Sherry. “We love it here.”

Jerry and Sherry, native Virginians, married 42 years ago. When Tara and Jim were about 10, they approached their folks, announcing “We need more kids around here.” Hello, Lara and Lucy.

When Tara flew the nest and went off to college, she returned to Old Dominion because she missed her younger sisters too much.

Sherry and the kids have all worked in the family businesses. When the children were little, they stuffed envelopes for the eight psychology offices Jerry owned and later for Instant Technologies, another family biz.

These days, Jerry is CEO of Instant Systems, another company in the medical field, which he runs with Tara’s help. Son Jim operates Fiddlefly, another family business.

“I’m pretty much retired,” said Jerry, 62. “I let the kids do most of the work.”

“Dad’s the big hammer when we need it,” said Tara.

“Working with your family is the best,” said Jerry. “Hey, who better to trust? We always have each others’ back.”

Asked what’s been the glue that has held such a remarkable family so close, Tara said, laughing, “The wine. We don’t want to be too far away from Dude’s wine collection.”

Jerry, who his wife joked “got into wine shortly after he turned 21,” has a 600-bottle collection.

The Event of the Year 2013 Annual Meeting

It doesn’t get any bigger – or better – than the Annual Meeting and Membership Party. Everyone who is anyone will be in attendance.

It’s all happening Saturday, January 19. The partying starts after a 6:30 p.m. membership meeting presided over by Club President Billy Dashiell. The band “Slapwater” will be performing in the ballroom late into the evening. Look for more details around the Club or in the January Newsletter.

“When people ask what do I do with my collection, I say ‘destroy it,” Jerry said. “That’s the best part.”

And the best part of life, said Grand Dude, is having your family around you.

Bridge NightIf you’ve always wanted to learn to play bridge, join our Bridge Group, which meets the first and third Wednesday nights of the month during the spring and fall. Next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 5th

It started a number of years ago when bridge players Tom Enright and John Kuehl got the idea to help teach the game and “grow” some players.

Under Enright and Kuehl’s patient instruction, the group has expanded to some 36 players, about 80 percent which are regulars.

“This is not meant to be very serious bridge,” said Tom. “Players are allowed to refer to their “crib sheets” during play and novices are allowed to “talk across the board” for some needed advice.

“We want everyone to continue to improve and learn more through experience and

Long Gone is Long GoneLong Gone, with Chuck and Stuart Taylor aboard, is off again, bound for the Bahamas.

The Taylors departed October 20 on their fifth trip south. Since departing slip C34, Long Gone has made stops in North Carolina at Coinjock, the Alligator River, Oriental, where it weathered Hurricane Sandy, Swansboro and Wrightsville.

In South Carolina, the Taylors have stopped at Southport, Charleston and Beaufort, where they were at press time.

“The trip so far has been fantastic,” Stuart emailed. “A bit chilly some nights, a bit windy others, but altogether fine.”

The Long Gone should arrive in Miami by Christmas and then depart for the Bahamas shortly after New Year’s.

YaChtingBoaters, Let There

Be LightThe marina will come aglow Sunday, Dec. 9 with the annual Boat Lighting.

Participants and those who come out to see the lights can come aglow at the post-lighting party in the Dock House where there will be plenty of food and libations.

The elves (judges) will begin reviewing the entries shortly after 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in 4 categories. As in previous years, the Club will waive electricity charges for the month for those participating.

Come out and join the fun.

We’re Pumped About Our New System

We now have a new state-of-the-art pump-out system. It’s located at the end of A-pier.

Thanks to research by Bob Hume and Steen Baerentz of the Yachting Committee, we were able to qualify as a part of a state program promoting “clean marinas.” The state grant pays 75 percent of the cost of the new system.

It replaces our aging and failing pump with an easier and more efficient system, allowing boaters to dispose of their “cargo” in a safer and more sanitary manner.

Brrr...Go FishNeither cold nor night can stay these fishermen from casting their lines into the Lafayette.

The Manly-Man (women are welcome to compete, too) Fishing Tournament takes place from 8 p.m. Dec. 8 to 3:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9. Weigh-In is at 4 p.m. sharp.

Fish must be caught on a hook and line. Participants can “catch” the action from a boat, kayak or from the dock.

If you bring your fish back, the club will prepare it for you or as an appetizer for the boat lighting celebration.

Break out your woollies and flashlights and come on out.

Ripley Rules the River

Congratulations to Bill Ripley and Obsession who won the Summer Keel Boat Series. Tom Lira was second and Harry Tenney piloted Margarita to third place.

The three were presented their trophies at the Fall Yachting Dinner.

A Special Holiday Brunch

Many members enjoyed an evening out at the Club on Thursday, November 8th for the Annual Fall Yachting Dinner. They had about 55 in attendance and the Yachting Committee awarded Ron Primm the A. Randolph Garnett award. See picture above.

We had a great turnout for Men’s Night in the Grill on Nov. 15th! Thanks to all who came out to support it.

Simpson and Shumadine NYCC Singles Champs

Carina Simpson was simply super and Jim Shumadine was simply not to be denied. Carina won all three of her matches without dropping a set to win the women’s club singles crown.

Jim fought through the Open draw to claim the men’s title, defeating Chris Smythe in the final.

Jim’s dad, Conrad, tried to make it a father-son sweep, but lost in the finals to Tony Irwin in the Men’s B Flight.

Congrats to all players who made this year’s tournament a success.

Juniors Are Big “Shotz” Again

Our 18-and-under Junior Tennis Team, the Yacht Shotz, won the league championship after racing through their division with a perfect 5-0 regular-season record. It was the second straight year the team won the division.

The Yacht Shotz defeated Tidewater Center Patriots, 40 to 14 games, to claim the championship. The victory qualifies the team for the state district tournament in the summer of 2013.

Squash is in Season

The Squash Kickoff event is set for Dec. 8 with an exhibition match, clinic and Q&A session. This is a great opportunity for players to pick up some pointers and strategy from our guest pro.

Contact Tennis Director John Kreis to register for the event (no charge) or to claim a spot in one of the clinics that follow ($23 per person for 1-hour with a group of up to 4).

The Fitness Center has a few personal training holiday packages to help you finish 2012 strong and keep you motivated and moving in the right direction for 2013.

For new clients this is the package for you: your first meeting with a trainer is a FREE 30-minute consultation. Then buy a package of 4 personal training sessions and receive a 5th session FREE.

It’s A Wrap

Calling All NYCC Mermaids

1…2…3…all together now. We will be offering a FREE synchronized swimming lesson on Dec. 30 at noon, open to all youngsters 9-11.

If we get a good turnout of mermaids (and mer-men, too), we’ll schedule a class for January.

This is an ideal class for youngsters who take gymnastics and like to swim. Swimmers must be comfortable both at the deep end of the pool and being under water.

Bring a swim cap. Nose clips are optional!

Sea Dragons and all would-be Sea Dragons (ages 7-10) can improve their technique at a demo-stroke clinic on Dec. 30. Cost is just $5 for this demo-class.

Swimmers must be comfortable with freestyle and backstroke. We will focus on the breast and butterfly strokes, but swimmers can work on any stroke that needs tuning up.

Classes are 45 minutes. Session I begins at 2 p.m. and Session II at 3 p.m. Sign ups are required as space is limited.

Regular clinics will begin in January. Watch for more info to follow.
