This is Don and Paulette Clark’s “63 Z06”. We all know how Don feels about silver mid-year Corvette coupes. He’s got a bunch of them. Now he has a “63”. This car was built by Karl’s Kustom Corvettes in Des Moines, Iowa. They fabricate C-2 style bodies to fit meticulously onto any C-6, whether it’s a coupe or a convertible. If you send them a coupe, you get a 63 coupe-style body. If you send a convertible, you get a 67 convertible-style body. The Z06 and Gran Sport require a kit with wider body panels, but they can convert them too. Don’s car is the fourth Z06 they’ve produced. They built the first Z06 for NASCAR’s Rick Hendrick. Karl’s plans to build about 20 of these conversions per year. All of the body panels are designed to replace the C-6 panels exactly. The C-2 style panels, doors, hood and rear hatch are all designed to fit the factory openings of the C-6, using all of the stock hinges and latches. This gives a much tighter car than if these were altered in any way. The only outside body panels that remain unchanged are the roof and the B-pillar on the

Wow! Look at that 63 Split Window Coupe... Wait something’s different about it! It’s wider and lower.

coupe version. The C-6 convertible top remains un-changed also. Karl’s produces their own front and rear bumpers to simulate the C-2 bumpers but styled to fit the sleeker, wider bodies they put on the C-6. These bumpers are bolted directly to the sub-structure to make them func-tional. The front headlights are square after-market lights which are relocated to the lower outside corners beneath the bumpers, with a door that looks like a section of the grill. Readily available C-2 reproduction parking and tail lights are used. The C-6 seats retain all of the adjustment features they came with. The backs of the seats are shortened somewhat to look more like the original design of the C-2 seats. The upholstery on the seats and door panels is also done in a style reminiscent of the C-2. Don’s car has red leather interior and red carpet. No changes were made on the dash or console. The conversion is advertised to take 90 days. They did this one in 87 days. Don says that it’s the only car

he’s ever had done that came in on time and within the quoted budget. The fit and finish on the car are excellent and Don elected to have it painted his favorite... silver. In partnership with Karl Chevrolet, Iowa’s #1-Selling Corvette dealer, Karl’s Kustom Cor-vettes delivers unsurpassed attention to quality. This set up gives drivers the comfort, power and engineering of today’s C6… all shelled in the breathtaking body style of a Mid-year.

Wow! Look at that 63 Split Window Coupe... Wait something’s different about it! It’s wider and lower.

Corvette Show at Sulphur Springs

Sulphur Springs Corvette Club member, Roger Elliott, who brought his red/white 61 Corvette over for our Cooper show, has made arrangements at Hampton Inn, rate $79. Phone 903-439-4646 to make reservations if you’re going over Friday night. Parking is lit and the hotel will request extra police patrols that night. He said he will also have something planned for us to do that night. There will be lots of Corvettes in town. For Saturday morning departure with CLoT members, I suggest we stage the southern group in Rockwall at 8am, and Greenville for the northern bunch at 8:30 am. It’s about a 90 min. trip. We need to arrive together to park together.

Contact Tom Lainson at 214-862-3555 for plans to caravan on Friday for those going early.

Legends to work with a new oil product called Z-ALT muscle car oil A few of our members are now running this oil in their pre-1975 vin-tage blocks and are experiencing good results. The three members all experienced an immediate drop of 10 degrees in running temps and, so far, are showing no ill effects. The difference is attributed to a new process which keeps the infused moly in solution and it also contains detergents, not often available in racing oils, and ZDDP. It does not have Teflon, chlorine or solvents. I have heard that Rotella has dropped the ZDDP. Does anyone know of this?

This oil is not for engineswith catalytic converters.

Legends will be keeping several six-can cases available for any-one wishing to try it out. Z-ALT is selling to our club at their distributor prices. The member cost will be the same as ordering it from the manu-facturer, with all ensuing profits to be donated to Patriot Paws. There is currently no Dallas outlet for this product. The Z-Alt website is http://z-alt.com/index.html for more information

Tom and I went on a car cruise out west in our 2006 Corvette the first two weeks of August. In Pueb-lo, CO just south of Colorado Springs we came up on a thunder storm and the outside temperature gauge in the Corvette said 102--it dropped to 71 in a matter of seconds. Don’t think we ever saw that before. First, we went to visit friends in Colorado Springs. We visited a small little German town at the base of Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods, which was absolutely breathtaking. In 2006 we did the train ride that went up Pikes Peak, so not this trip. Then we headed across Colorado into Nevada. We saw some of the most awesome mountain rang-es. Tom said this highway we took across Nevada was the Loneliest Highway in America and I totally believe it. Cars were far and few between and we could see 40 miles ahead on this two lane road. We went up the mountains and down the mountains and I know Tom got tired of hearing me say, “Could you go a little slower than 85, as there are no guard rails?“ It was like being on a curvy roller coaster, and very high. Some of the summits were 10,000 ft. or more. It was a good thing we were getting great gas mileage (about 34 MPG in some places that had no ethanol), Tom bragged. We spent one night at Ely, NV, at a ca-sino that only had about 25 slots and not much else, but clean. After traveling another day and a half, we made it to our niece’s wedding in Lake Tahoe, CA, which was the reason we decided to go on this trip. We stayed at the Embassy Suites, which even gave us a great free breakfast every morning. We were just across the street from Harrah’s, so I did a little gambling while there and won some of their money. Tom and I also did a side trip to Virginia City, an old Silver Min-ing Town for a few hours. Remember the name from Bonanza, the TV Show? They have pictures of the Cartwrights all over the place. Tom and my brother-in-law Larry also took one afternoon and went to Reno, to the Harrah’s Auto Museum and saw lots of old cars. Hot August Nights was the next weekend, they already had car shows in South Lake Tahoe, which we all enjoyed. We did the cruise around the Lake for the Re-hearsal Dinner on a big Paddle Wheel boat, with great scenery. The wedding was the next afternoon

on top of the mountain. We had to take a gondola up and back. In the winter it takes the skiers up the mountain, covered with snow. It was a fabulous wedding and great food and a great time with our family. We did not miss the hot weather as it was in the 80’s during the day there and 40’s at night. We even needed a jacket some of the time. We heard Dallas had 110 the day we headed to California. The scenery was so beautiful and we took a lot of pictures. We spent about five days there and the last day most everyone left except my son, his wife, grandson and nephew, so we visited the beach about six blocks away. The water was freezing, so we just sat in chairs nearby. Then we decided to take a raft down the Truckee River, on the other side of the Lake. We thought it would take about an hour and we thought someone would be paddling for us. When we arrived, we did

11

the paddling and it was very shallow, but it was a fun trip. The boys, ages 4 and 11, loved it, when we came to the rapids and the rocks. The people said it would take three hours to get down the river, but we made record time and made it in two hours. There was a band along the shore and an ice cream truck, so we got ice cream, not quite like the rivers around here. Tom and I headed out the next day for Yosemite Park. I failed to mention that on our road trip, every city had road construction. Some of the two lane roads we’d come to would stop traffic, both directions and everyone would turn their cars off, get out and visit for about 30 minutes. Food was scarce in the park, as we found out everyone stopped at the same hamburger hole in the wall. We found a picnic table and ate, then headed to all the other sites, then left the park. After another day on the road, we made it to San Francisco for the day. San Francisco was very crowded. We rode the cable car downtown, and boy was it packed. We expected to return to the wharf on it for lunch, but when they made us get off, we ended up finding another trolly to get us back to Fisherman’s Wharf. The line to get on the cable car return was very long. Fisherman’s Wharf was nice and we even needed coats, as it was in the 60’s there. We ate at the Seal Cafe, which was where all the seals sleep and stay outside on the wharf. We had the best specialty of Clam Chowder in a bowl of sour dough bread and a caesar salad. We also saw Alcatraz, across the water, from the Wharf. Tom had seen San Francisco a few times years ago, but I hadn’t seen much of the country, hence the trip by car. People who fly never get to experi-ence the country side as we did. After having a long discussion about where we left the car, we finally found it, right where we left it. Next, we headed up to Yellowstone Park and back across Nevada to Wyoming. We learned to buy food before we got to the park this time and have a picnic, which we did. Yellowstone is big and we saw most of

it with a lot of stops to see special sites. The crowds were big. We never saw a bear in Yosemite or Yellowstone, but we saw bison, deer and antelopes. People are crazy there. When any wildlife appeared, they would stop in the middle of the road and run take pictures. We missed seeing Old Faithful by five minutes, as we saved it for last. They said it would be at least another two ½ hours, maybe, as it was never on time anymore. It was getting late so we headed out and, of course, there was road construction, again. We were a little nervous about still being in the park at dark, because of all the deer and bear signs. We spent the night at the first motel we saw about 8:30 at night, which was Jackson Hole, Wyoming. That was the most expensive hotel yet, even in Tahoe. We headed back to Dallas, about another two day trip, but the Corvette ran beautifully. We only saw rain briefly a few times. On the long trip we saw so many beautiful sights and met so many interesting people. Truly, a once in a lifetime trip we will never forget. We were exhausted, but glad to be home. We could not believe the 100 degree days were still in Dallas!
