A Note from Mrs. Buller…. Changes….

As we move further into EL Education we are trying to make everything we do

at York more meaningful and connected. It is causing us to analyze and change

some things we do. One such change is how we celebrate student success. We

will no longer be doing a monthly Mustang Award. We are working to develop

a similar award that is directly tied to our new Habits of Scholarship

(Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Perseverance, Explorer, and Compassion).

The new award will not occur monthly, but will be focused on celebrating stu-

dents who embody these Habits all of the time. A criteria will be develop and all

teachers in the building will help decide who to nominate. Our Crew and Cul-

ture Team is still working out the details, but we wanted you to know of the

change. We will let you know the details when we have the criteria and the plan

completed. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our EL Educa-

tion Instructional Guide, Megan Coryell at [email protected] or

(574)822-5338. Thank you for understanding during this shift.

At the suggestion of some parents and staff, we have also decided not to have

fall parties and a hat parade this year. October is such a crazy month and many

felt that these events could use a break!!

We would like to thank our York PTO for putting on our annual Yorkfest in September.

It was a great time for our York families to get together to

enjoy hotdogs, socialize and even dunk a few York teachers

and staff in the Dunk Tank!

We had our vision screenings on all first, third and new second graders the month of September.

Dr. Stickel, OD, will be here on Monday, October 3rd to do vision examines on all first graders. You can call the school nurse with

any questions you may have @ 574/822-5042.

Clothing donations would gladly be accepted in our clinic, especially sizes 5-8 for boys and girls. Any new packages of under-

wear (sizes 5-8) would also be accepted. Thank you!!

PICTURE RE-TAKE DAY

Wednesday, October 26th, will be Picture Retake Day for students who were absent the day of pictures, any

new student at York, or anyone student that was not satisfied with their first picture. If you need an order form, please

let your teacher know and we’ll have one sent home with your child.

PARENT VISITOR POLICY

Your visits mean so much to our students. If you are planning to come and have lunch with your child, please call

ahead so that we can add that to our school lunch count for the day. Please check in with the office and pick up a visi-

tor’s pass when you arrive. We want to thank you for your support in not bringing restaurant meals and soda

pop into our cafeteria. Adult lunch costs are $3.40. Your child's safety is one of our top priorities at MCS. As we con-

tinue to take a proactive approach to school safety, MCS has implemented a policy in which visitors to the school may

no longer attend recess. This will allow for us to know who is on our playground with your children and to prevent unapproved per-

sons to have access to students. We apologize for any inconvenience, but thank you for your support and understanding as we work

together to maintain a safe environment for all students.

ARMS MENTORING PROGRAM

In 30 minutes, one day a week, a change is possible. Giving your time to a young boy or girl is the most im-

portant gift you can offer. Adults Reaching Middlebury Students (ARMS) is a mentoring program that takes

place right in our schools. Caring adult mentors are paired with youth, ages 6-18, for 30 minutes once a week.

The time spent together can be shared through tutoring, enjoying lunch, or even just being a good listener.

Every child deserves a caring adult in their life. Be the change today! Complete an ARMS application at

www.mcsin-k12.org/arms.

“3 For Me” Do you know about 3 For Me? It is a program run by the PTO to recognize our wonderful families

who volunteer at York throughout the year. If you volunteer in your child’s class, attend field trips,

attend PTO meeting and events, or do anything for our school, we want to recognize you! When you

sign in the front office, simply check the “3 For Me” column. When you volunteer for 3 hours, your

student will receive a special “3 For Me” badge for their locker. This is a great visual for our kids to

show how much our school family cares and helps out! Don’t forget to look for “3 For Me” sign in

sheets at all PTO sponsored events! Thank you so much to our volunteers who have already made a

big impact on the 2016-17 school year!

Our annual York Auction will be held on Saturday, February 4th. This

to make it a success, we are in need of volunteers to make calls to donors.

contact Amber Kaehr @ 260/820-0818. We are already starting the process so we hope to

hear back from all of you soon!
