Why Join the SHDA? We oſten hear many new parents wondering why they should join the Saskatoon Highland Dancing Associaon. Then we hear these same new parents say at about the one year mark, “why didn’t anyone tell me about this wonderful organizaon?” Well the reasons are many and varied but usually we like the parents to get their feet wet in the highland world for a year before we approach them about joining. The purpose of the SHDA is to promote Scosh culture in Saskatoon and surround- ing communies. We promote the culture through many facets: Folkfest, dance outs at various events such as Fesval of Trees, Mayor’s Gala, school events, Robbie Burns events and dance compeons. Many new parents assume it is the dance schools that are the passage to these events but it is the SHDA. The 3 dance schools in Saskatoon work with the SHDA to make these events a reality for the dancers but it is the responsibility of the SHDA. What is expected of you once you join? - we require members to work 20 hours at Folkfest; our one and only fundraiser. What do you get out of all your hard work at Folkfest? - 3 top level dance compeons each year - subsidized workshops in Saskatoon - subsidized Spring Tune-Up (a dance camp of sorts) - dancer gets to perform at Folkfest - financial support for compeve dancers - financial subsidies for all dancers for costuming, travel, compeon fees - professional development funding 2015 – 2016 SHDA Execuve: President: Vicki Streiloff Workshops: Heather Bonynge [email protected] Vice-President: Cathryn Wood Compeons: Heather Hollman Past President: TBA Communicaon: MJ Sherven Treasurer: James Smith Pavilion Manager: Rachelle Lockwood Secretary: Randall Keays Provincial Rep: Pa Fisher Membership: Paula MacPherson Dance-Outs: Tannis Nicholson [email protected] [email protected] SHDA October 2015 Dates to Remember in 2015 Oct 17th Baleford Open Compeon Oct 18th Lloydminster Open Compeon Nov 7th Regina Open Compeon Nov 28th SHDA Open Compeon Dec 2015 Renew ScotDance Cards Jan 25th Robbie Burns Day Feb 6th SHDA Closed Compeon Apr 2nd & 3rd SHDA Spring Tune Up May 6th & 7th Provincial Championships in Baleford May 28th SHDA Open Premiership Why Join SHDA? 1 Muriel Boyle Award Robbie Burns 2 SHDA Dancer Profiles 3 Compeons 4 Dance Outs 4 Contact Informaon 4 Inside this issue: Guth na Dannsairean Voice of the Dancers SASKATOON HIGHLAND DANCING ASSOCIATION Volume 2015, Issue 3 October 2015

Why Join the SHDA?

We often hear many new parents wondering why they should join the Saskatoon Highland Dancing Association. Then we hear these same new parents say at about the one year mark, “why didn’t anyone tell me about this wonderful organization?” Well the reasons are many and varied but usually we like the parents to get their feet wet in the highland world for a year before we approach them about joining.

The purpose of the SHDA is to promote Scottish culture in Saskatoon and surround-ing communities. We promote the culture through many facets: Folkfest, dance outs at various events such as Festival of Trees, Mayor’s Gala, school events, Robbie Burns events and dance competitions.

- 3 top level dance competitions each year - subsidized workshops in Saskatoon - subsidized Spring Tune-Up (a dance camp of sorts) - dancer gets to perform at Folkfest - financial support for competitive dancers - financial subsidies for all dancers for costuming, travel, competition fees - professional development funding 2015 – 2016 SHDA Executive:

Folkfest 2015 was a huge success! Each year the SHDA hosts the Scottish Pavilion at the Prairieland Events Centre. This year was another huge success thanks in large part to the many, many, MANY volunteers who make this happen. How do we measure success at Folk-fest? Well we saw nearly 30,000 people come through our doors in the 3 days, we sold out of food every night (yummy haggis), our liquor lines were long, the performances were top-notch and the dancing was amazing! Plus a bonus this year ~ one of our own won the Trip for Two to Scotland ~ congratulations Rachelle Lockwood. Our Ambassadors this year were Betty and Larry Mitchell and our Jr. Ambassadors were Katie Forsyth and Lauren Dun-can. They represented us well!! Remember that this is SHDA’s only fundraising event and the funds raised from here go directly towards our dancers. It is terrific to work a fundraiser that has such a correlating benefit to the organization it is supporting. Nicole McIntyre ...and committee put a tremendous number of hours in to make this annual event another success. It is never an easy undertaking but Nicole really did SHDA proud as Pavilion Manager. Thanks so much Nicole.

Who are the Glenlily Highland Dancers?

The Glenlily

Highland

Dancers are a

professional

dance troupe

consisting of

Premier danc-

ers over the age

of 18 from the

Wilson School

of Highland

Dance.

The group was formed in 2000 while in Scotland by a group of WSHD danc-

ers who wanted to still perform Celtic choreography. The name was inspired

by the various locations in Scotland named Glen—and Lily for the official

flower of Saskatchewan. Since its inception there have been approximately

60 dancers perform with the group at various events across Saskatchewan

and Alberta.

The dancers choreograph numbers to Celtic music and then teach each other

the dances to perform. Some of the events they have performed over the

years are: Mayor’s Gala, TeleMiracle, Canmore Highland Games Ceilidh,

weddings, conventions, Robbie Burns events, University functions and more.

If you wish to hire them to perform you can go to their Facebook page:
