Student Leadership at Darcel Our new Peer Mediation Program starts in October. At this time, our Peer Mediation Committee will train 20 students from grade 6, 7, and 8 to be Peer Mediators. The students develop the conflict resolution skills of understanding conflict, confidentiality, effective communication, active listening, and leadership skills. Furthermore, peer mediators become role models of peacemaking wherever they go, helping to make the school a better place to live and learn. Our student announcer program started in September and it was a huge success. We have 20 student announcers so far to do morning and afternoon announcements. Not only do the announcers hear their own voices but also practice their communication, public speaking and presentation skills.
In addition, we started a student ambassador program on September 30th. Last but not least, we are going to have a student office helper program in early October. We have received lots of applications already. Keep up the good work, Darcel students! (Ms Wu – Guidance)

The Terry Fox walk was an extreme success this year at Darcel! As a school, we raised $900.00 which will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation. We are incredibly proud of the students and staff who participated. During our wrap up assembly, students who bought raffle tickets leading up to the event had the chance to throw a pie in a teacher's face, colour their hair or even build a sundae on the principal's head! Due to reaching our school wide fundraising goal, as promised, Mr. Kingston put up his legs for waxing!! A special thank you goes out to the students of class 7C who helped clean the backfield, sold raffle tickets and spread the word on the morning announcements! Well done Panthers!

WE DAY In Toronto“WE DAY is the movement of our time, empowering a generation of
young global citizens through an inspirational event and a year-long educational initiative.” It is a world movement created by Craig and Marc Keilburger. WE DAY inspires young people to become leaders in local and global initiatives to help change the world and the community we live in one step at a time.
On September 20th, 2013, the WE DAY Student Team, along with Mrs. Marcelli and Ms. Brubacher, went down to the Air Canada Centre where they enjoyed celebrity performances and other influential speakers from across Canada and the world. All the speakers and performers had inspirational messages for the youth.
The job of the WE DAY Team at Darcel is to involve the Darcel student body in one global and one local initiative. This team of students will be fundraising for a local food bank in Peel. In addition, they will be raising awareness about the need for education in developing countries. The WE DAY team together with the Darcel student body have a big job ahead of them, but they are learning to be dedicated global citizens and willing to work to make a difference in the world.

We Scare HungerThe We Day Committee is launching a local initiative that can change people's lives in Peel. It is called WE SCARE HUNGER. This is an initiative where students at Darcel collect canned food and non-perishable items throughout the month of October. All your donations will be given to the Knights Table Food Bank in Peel. Check out their website at www.knightstable.org for more information.Did you know that more than 1,800 families and individuals get help from the Knights Table Food Bank in Peel and 40% are children? You can make a change for people and families throughout the Peel region.
To kick things off for our food drive, we are creating a competition between homeroom classes. Which class will be the heroes to help stop hunger? We will be tracking donated food items on bar graphs and the information will be displayed for all to see in the grade 8 hallway for the month of October.
Here is another challenge: If you really want to be the heroes of hunger on Halloween, October 31st, help out the people in our community by going around and collecting canned food instead of candy for the less fortunate in Peel. Darcel Panthers can make a change and put a smile on people's face for a long time.

Storybook Highlight For OctoberWritten by Mrs.Marcelli
As a Teacher-Librarian and an avid reader, I am always looking for stories that are compelling and can teach life lessons. For this month, I would like to highlight the storybook, 14 Cows For America. It is a true story of a tribe from Kenya that when hearing of the 911 attacks in New York, offer their gift of life and friendship to a nation that was grieving over their loss.
This is a truly inspiring story that teaches generosity, selflessness and a need to care for others. I hope that I have encouraged you to read this story and find the joy in giving to others.

Parking Lot Changes
Due to concerns for student safety – the gates of the side parking lot of Darcel Senior will be closed in the mornings before school and in the afternoons after school. It is unsafe to use the parking lot as a
Kiss and Ride site. When driving your child to school, please follow the signage at the front of the school and drop your child off in the
designated area.
