October is here already, and the fall season is well underway. It’s my favorite time of the year. The quality of the light is different, and you can feel something in the

air that signals the end of summer, the change of the seasons and cooler weather ahead.

October is also the month when we hold our annual Concours d’Elegance. This year marks the 34th time we’ve put our cars on the lawn, and it promises to be an event you won’t want to miss. For the first time in four years, we’ve moved to a new location at the California State University Channel Islands campus in Camarillo. Our event will take place in the South Quad, which provides a huge lawn surrounded by trees on all sides with buildings beyond to provide a feel of serenity and privacy. The space is used for the university’s commencement exercises each year and serves as the site of the annual Casa Pacifica Wine and Food Festival fundraiser.

Our concours is always a popular Zone 8 event which draws entrants from all over Southern California. We anticipate more than 40 judged cars and a wonderful array of Porsches on display. There will be several vendors joining us including Dr. Color Chip, Sonax Car Care Products, Lavaggio Detailing, World Class Motoring and Bling Ragz for the ladies. Our sponsor for the event is Rusnak Westlake Porsche, and they will bring their boutique and have several cars on display with special pricing. The university’s on-site caterer will prepare a wonderful hot lunch, and you’ll have a chance to catch up with old friends in a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

We hope you’ll come out for an enjoyable afternoon and consider entering your car in one of many judged classes. Or, simply wipe down your car and put it on the lawn for all to admire as a display. All entrants will have a chance to win the “Peoples Choice Award.” You’ll find the registration form for judged classes and display on page 18. Pre-registration saves you money. So come on out and bring the kids for an afternoon of fun and relaxation at our new venue while you support your fellow SBR members who will be competing for trophies in many different classes. Oh, and spectators get in free.

There may still be time to register for the Solvang Wine Country Harvest Tour during the weekend of October 16-17. Michael & Beverly Brovsky have a wonderful weekend planned that you won’t want to miss. The Santa Barbara Auto Group is our sponsor and will kick off the weekend with coffee and pastries at the dealership. We’ll then caravan over back roads to the Rancho

From The Editor’s DeskJohn Alfenito

There’s a wide variety of activities to catch up on in this month’s Der Auspuff. With the event schedule

our region supports, it’s great to have members step up and contribute to the magazine.

This month, coverage of the Santa Barbara Auto Group Panamera Tech Session is provided by its organizer, Vice President Bill Sampson. Coupled with Dan Lindsay’s terrific photos, the coverage is almost as good as being there.

R.U.F. had a very interesting outing last month to the Santa Susana Train Depot and Museum in Simi Valley. Nick Liakas, who designed this adventure for us, also wrote the informative article. Yours truly snapped some photos, and I must admit, seeing all those HO model trains really took me back to my younger days. I had a fun collection of O-gauge trains as a boy. The Santa Susana Depot is a great stop for train lovers.

Ted Lighthizer and Doreen Pankow created this year’s Progressive Dinner and their article, along with more great pictures from Nick Liakas, makes me very sorry I was unable to be there. This month’s cover shot is from the Progressive Dinner and was taken by Nick.

Finally, past region presidents and serious car folks Suzi Sheller & Bob Roe sent in an article on their “auto themed” vacations this year. From a Hemmings Motor Cruise to a visit to the Porsche Museum in Germany, Bob & Suzi share their travels and photos in this month’s newsletter.

Thanks to everyone for contributing. Your input makes this publication better and better each month.

Sisquoc Winery for lunch and wine tasting before checking in at the Hotel Corque in Solvang. Later that evening, we’ll enjoy wine and appetizers on the patio of the Root 246 Restaurant next door, followed by dinner together in the dining room.

Sunday morning will feature a continental breakfast at the hotel followed by test drives in new Porsche models, compliments of Porsche Cars North America. You’ll have time to explore Solvang or visit an array of wineries in the area.

You’ll find the registration form facing this page. It’s going to be an event to remember. We hope to see you there.

CAMARILLO BReAkfAst CLuB - sePteMBeR 4, 2010

LaborDayWeekendLaunch

Holiday weekends are always popular at our Camarillo Breakfasts and Labor Day

Weekend, 2010 was no exception. A crowd of 136 members and guests arrived in 85 Porsches to kick off the unofficial “last weekend of Summer.”

President Dave Stone introduced Walt Branscome from Santa Barbara Auto Group and Mark Stratmeyer of Rusnak Westlake, reminding everyone that Rusnak had just contributed its first $500 check to SBR upon Amil Garcia’s recent purchase of a 2011 Boxster Spyder. Remember, for every new or used Porsche purchased at Rusnak by an SBR member, or purchased there by someone referred by an SBR member, the dealership will donate $500 to our region. This offer is valid through the end of 2010.

Activities Co-Chair Doreen Pankow filled in for Membership Chair Janice Herndon, announcing the attendance figures and recognizing new members James & Harriet Edwards, who’ve been with our region for six months, but were attending their first meeting today. Also introduced were Mike & Robin McConnell from Woodland Hills, who just transferred from the Los Angeles Region. Guests attending today’s get-together included Mick Flavin from Santa Paula, a guest of Nancee Baldino, and Sascha Kiesbuey, a guest of David Barr.

Ted Lighthizer then presented several members to give the specifics of upcoming SBR activities which they were organizing. Lloyd Martinez urged participation in the upcoming September 18 Camarillo Autocross at the airport. Carolyn Ewbank promoted the upcoming Pre-Concours

Detail Clinic on September 11 at Lavaggio, and the Concours d’Elegance to be held at California State University Channel Islands on October 10. The Merricks and the Kinslings encouraged everyone to sign up for the Sep 25th Gimmick Rally With A Twist, the twist being some trivia knowledge of the state of California. Michael Brovsky touted the Wine Country Harvest Tour to Solvang for the October 16-17 weekend. Santa Barbara Auto Group is sponsoring this event, and will provide several new Porsches for those attending to test drive throughout the weekend.

Finally, Nancy Maletz gave the details on the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend trip to Las Vegas planned for next January.

Once again, several Porsche posters were given away to lucky raffle ticket holders as the meeting came to a close. =

A somewhat smaller than usual Santa Barbara breakfast crowd of 39 gathered at Moby Dick’s for

our September 11th meeting. President Dave Stone commemorated the occasion by asking for a moment of silence in remembrance of the thousands who lost their lives nine years before in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

Membership Chair Janice Herndon told us there were 30 Porsches parked

on the wharf, and she introduced some attendees. Chris Pomeras of Colorado Springs (and Carpinteria) was there with his vintage 1967 912, as were first-time S.B. Breakfast goers James & Harriet Edwards (who’d attended their first SBR breakfast the weekend before in Camarillo). Janice also introduced prospective PCA’er Roger Thompson from Montecito, the proud owner of a 2005 C4S. Our Membership Chair also recognized Activities Co-Chair

Doreen Pankow, who had celebrated her birthday just the day before.

Doreen, along with her Activities Co-Chair Ted Lighthizer, outlined the busy upcoming event schedule for our region. The Detail Clinic, which would convene after today’s breakfast, was to be the natural lead-in to the October 10th Concours d’Elegance at the California State University Channel Islands campus. Lloyd Martinez told us the September 18th Autocross in Camarillo is sold out! Sue Kinsling promoted the upcoming Gimmick Rally (with a twist). Michael Brovsky indicated the Wine Country Harvest tour of Solvang is very close to capacity. Doreen

also announced that because of insurance issues, the November 20 Kart Racing Event has been removed from the SBR schedule. P.M.S. has set a volunteer day at Food Share in Oxnard for November 20th, and the possibility of a club-wide event for November is in the works. As always, information and fliers for all SBR events can be found in the latest “Der Auspuff” or online.

The meeting concluded with the drawing for several Porsche posters provided by Walt Branscome of Santa Barbara Auto Group. Once again, many happy winners made for another great breakfast meeting. =

“...If it had a set of wings, man, I know she could fly...”

Notwithstanding the Beach Boys’ paean to the legendary 1932 Ford coupe, a group of twenty plus (that

would be number of attendees and not remotely close to their respective ages) SBR members were treated to a technical discussion of the features and merits of the new Porsche Panamera Turbo on August 18, 2010. That latter vehicle does, in fact, include a “wing” that is deployed, according to the esteemed lecturer, Rick Perkins, Field Technical Manager for Porsche Cars North America, at speeds in excess of a number suitable for publication by our group.

“...Just a little Deuce Coupe with a flathead mill...She’ll do a hundred and forty in the top end floored...”

The Panamera Turbo will do 188 mph and features a turbocharged V8 engine that stops (as in, shuts itself OFF!) at red lights. This latter feature results in EPA fuel use estimates of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. (Full disclosure: the author covets numbers that high for his own flathead.)

“...She’s got a competition clutch with four on the floor...”

The Panamera is equipped with an all wheel drive seven-speed transmission with PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung). Rick advised us that the unpronounceable portion of the foregoing means “double clutch.” Our “professor” also produced the

control unit removed from the car for the PDK, a truly awesome engineering feat.

“...And comin’ off the line when the light turns green, well she blows ‘em outta the water like you never seen...”

The Panamera Turbo reaches 60 mph in four seconds. It is assisted in this regard by a “launch” mechanism. Launch is an appropriate description for the capability of this vehicle. But, I digress. Rick brought with him a dissected launch control mechanism. He had tested such a mechanism when he was privileged to drive a turbo in the desert with the launch control designer from Porsche.

“... I get pushed out of shape and it’s hard to steer...”

Having sidestepped a clutch or two in my day, I was amazed to learn that launch control is operated by making dead certain that the front wheels are pointed straight ahead on a straight stretch of highway, placing one’s left foot firmly on the brake and flooring the accelerator. Then, according to Mr. Perkins, one simply removes one’s left foot and proceeds frighteningly quickly to over 100 mph. Progression in a straight line is assisted by Porsche Traction Management in order to

Recently showcased on Jay Leno’s Garage, this Panamera clutch had been cut apart by Jay’s Garage in order to investigate its inner workings. The PDK transmission was described as a true 7-speed manual transmission, but with automatic controls.

avoid “getting pushed out of shape.” The desert test procedure will not damage the vehicle and can be repeated indefinitely or until the occupants become car sick, whichever comes first.

In case you wish to hear “Little Deuce Coupe” in sound system heaven, the optional Burmester sound system will set you back an additional quarter million dollars.

“......There’s one more thing, I’ve got the pink slip, Daddy... “

The pink slip on the turbo (with a mere

multi-thousand dollar Bose set up) can be easily acquired from our hosts for about the same price as the author’s first house.

Thanks very much to Rick Perkins and to our hosts, SBAG Service Manager Mike Brown, and our own Walt Branscome at Santa Barbara Porsche, who not only stayed late at work but fed us! Walt will be happy to assist you regarding that pink slip. The evening was both enlightening and entertaining, and Rick is an excellent instructor. See you down the road. =

All Aboard! Travel back in history to a time and place where the fastest and most reliable mode of

transportation was the railroad by visiting the Santa Susana Railroad Depot in Simi Valley. Twenty-four R.U.F.ians did just that on August 26, 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed the guided tours of the Ventura County Historical Site.

Our Retired and Unemployed Folks gathered early in the morning in Westlake Village and traveled to Simi Valley and the foot of the Santa Susana Pass. There, in colors reminiscent of the turn of the last century, awaited the depot and the staff of seven docent volunteers that would escort us in and around the site. (Yes, you read correctly; seven docents eagerly anticipated our arrival and made us feel special.) The structure sits aside the very active Amtrak and Southern Pacific railroad tracks and is adorned with traffic control devices and communications equipment utilized when the station was constructed. More on that later.

Built in 1903 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, this rural depot served passengers and farmers in the Simi Valley for more than 60 years. It has a classic waiting room

featuring a potbelly stove, and was the headquarters for local freight shipments. (The three stoves on the premises were fueled by coal, and buckets of the actual coal used in the early 1900s at the depot were positioned at the foot of each.) Once the depot was opened in 1903, it quickly became the early transportation hub for the valley. (Note that in that same year the Wright brothers made their first flight, Henry Ford produced the first model T, and Harley-Davidson sold its first motorcycle.) The depot was essential to the survival of local agriculturalists by being a major factor in the shipment of their perishable produce to distant markets.

Our contingent was divided into two groups, and the docents began the tours at different ends of the train platforms to avoid over-crowding. We took turns touring the waiting room, the telegraph and ticketing office, the loading platforms and signal equipment. Old versions of train traffic lights, railroad “orders,” mail sorting and delivery systems, and telegraph equipment were displayed and explained in detail. The docents operated the traffic lights and produced photos of train conductors grabbing mail sacks as the trains roared by at 70 m.p.h. Our club members operated the telegraph keys and

the early editions of e-mail via Teletype machines. It was fascinating to learn and see how stations communicated with engineers before electronics changed an entire way of life. We were fortunate to be standing on the train platforms as Amtrak trains roared past, responding to our waves with blasting horns!

The Santa Susana Depot was built with the stationmaster’s residence on the second floor. (Most other depots were one story structures known as “flag stops” because would-be passengers had to waive a flag at the oncoming train so it would stop for boarding.) We learned that the last stationmaster locked all the doors and windows and vacated this depot for the last time in 1974. Previous stationmasters

raised entire families within the four walls, but the head of the family seldom left the station.

An extra special treat was exhibited in the former storage room of the depot. On display was a tantalizing and intricate HO scale model railroad. The miniature recreation of the Pacific Coast Line is an incredibly detailed hand-built replica carefully constructed and lovingly maintained by the Santa Susana Model Railroad Club. The current layout imitates the route from San Pedro to Portland, Oregon and features more than 500 feet of

The knowledgeable and friendly docents made our visit both educational and fun.

track with more than 50 switches. Six trains can be operated simultaneously. We were allowed not only to watch trains in motion but were also afforded an opportunity to wander into the interior of the exhibit where usually only officials of the model club are allowed to roam. Three of those officials were on hand to explain and describe the model display and to escort our groups into the “officials only” areas.

At the east end of the building is another model railroad treat, a Lionel collection that has to be one of the largest on exhibit. Many of us remembered our childhood days when Lionel and American Flier model trains dominated our playtime. Some of us even recalled visiting the Lionel corporate headquarters in New York City during our youth.

We departed at 11:45 a.m. for our return drive to Westlake Village and lunch at Brent’s Deli. We were all seated in its Bar Room at a very long table that accommodated our group. It was heartwarming to see our members enjoy each other’s company and good conversation. The meal was secondary in importance. =

Fortunately Mother Nature provided our group of 78 both sunny skies and cool temperatures, a welcome change from the normal

triple-digit heat of August in So Cal. Club tradition gives the Activities Committee Co-Chairs complete responsibility for planning and overseeing the Progressive Dinner, and this year we had our turn in the barrel. The only changes for this year’s event were three stops instead of four, and “no brainer” quick and easy driving routes to and from each stop.

First Stop The Maletzes’We departed as a group and drove the

lovely gentle 14-miles through the Santa Rosa Valley to the home of Doug & Nancy Maletz where we were tempted by a full array of delicious appetizers and salads. Dave Mosesson brought the tasty meatballs and daughter Kirsten helped warm and serve the assortment of appetizers, including shrimp, teriyaki and orange chicken nuggets, guacamole dip and chips, and trail mix. There were four salads from which to choose: Gary & Phyllis Weaver’s spinach salad, Mike & Diane Macdonell’s pasta salad, Nancy Maletz’s wedge salad, and Ted’s fresh fruit salad.. Mike & Karen Turek arrived early and assisted with setup.

Olga Liakas and Karen Turek also helped with clean-up. Everyone had plenty of time to visit with other members and enjoy Doug and Nancy’s beautiful home and patio. We’ll never know how much money was bet and won on shots at the pool table, as many members racked them up during their stop at the Maletz’s home.

Stop 2: Tuscany il RistoranteAfter a group picture was taken, we

departed for Tuscany il Ristorante in Westlake Village, about an eight mile drive. Everyone immediately ordered assorted beverages, including fine wine and drinks.

We enjoyed sumptuous meals of filet mignon and short ribs, grilled salmon, chicken marsala and trenette genovese with bay scallops and shrimp. The service was excellent and the food remarkable. Adam Chirchick, Sales Manager at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake, joined us for the meal since Rusnak was the generous sponsor of this event. Of course no meal is completely without incident, and the lucky participants were Janice Herndon and Steve Bernston, who inadvertently spilled a drink with an arm sweeping gesture. Amazingly, Janice’s white pants remained pristinely clean.

Stop 3: The Langes’We then took a three mile drive to the

home of Dick & Linda Lange with the last mile being a fun twisty road through the Westlake hills. Bob Bassett and Larry Stoops directed everyone to park Le Mans style, and beautiful Porsches lined both sides of the street. Another picture opportunity was seized by the event’s official photographer, Nick Liakas, who took over 50 pictures during the three stops. Nick’s pictures have been posted online and will likely also be posted at the club’s website www.pcasb.org.

Linda Lange had decorated their home beautifully with fragrant flowers, and the kitchen counter displayed an array of scrumptious desserts. Cheesecakes with raspberry sauce, chocolate mousse, lemon bars, chocolate cake, and an assortment of cookies, nuts and chocolate candy tempted everyone to indulge. The evening was comfortably cool and many guests chose to sit outside and enjoy the Langes’ beautiful yard and view of the waterfall cascading into the swimming pool. After some good conversation and camaraderie, members left for their homes satisfied and tired, and no doubt looking forward to their next PCA/SBR event.

We want to thank Doug & Nancy Maletz and Dick & Linda Lange for their gracious hospitality, great food and willingness to have close to 80 club members in their homes. It was a delightful afternoon and evening! =

There’s always room for dessert, especially the selection at Dick & Linda Lange’s

ATLANTA – The joy of driving a classic Porsche is sufficient reward for most enthusiasts, but owning the oldest Porsches

in America could bring some very real awards during the company’s 60th Anniversary year in the United States.

To celebrate six decades of American Porsche passion, on Aug. 13 Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) launched the “My Classic Porsche Search.” This national search will focus on finding the oldest Porsches in 12 distinctive model categories, as well as the very oldest Porsche of all.

As part of its 60th Anniversary celebration, Porsche is inviting owners to introduce these most senior members of the Porsche family to everyone in

America. My Classic Porsche Search is open to all owners who think they have a shot at earning the “oldest” designation for their car.

Entries can be submitted for 12 model ranges, including the Porsche 356, 911, 912, 914, 924, 928, 944, 968, Boxster, Cayenne, Carrera GT and Cayman. In addition, the search is on for the Grossvater of all Porsches on American soil, the oldest Porsche ever sold in the United States.

Owners who have Porsches “with papers” can enter online right now. To submit an entry, visit www.Porsche60Years.com and review the participation guidelines for My Classic Porsche Search.

The oldest Porsches and their owners

will receive special recognition and become eligible for additional awards, including an exclusive badge from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Exhibition-quality images of select winning models will also be featured at the new “Sixty Years of Porsche in America” exhibit, opening October 12 at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. One vehicle may also be selected for display at the Porsche stand during this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, where it will join the company’s newest models.

All entries will be evaluated for authenticity by a Porsche panel of experts, including noted American Porsche historians from the Porsche Club of America. =

It appears that quite a few region members are visiting the Porsche Factory and Museum, as well as other automotive museums, this year.

Hemmings Car CruiseWe’ve had a rather auto-centric year

so far ourselves. First, in February, we joined more than 400 other gearheads for the 6th Annual Hemmings Classic and Muscle Car Cruise to the Mexican Riviera aboard the Carnival Splendor. Hemmings paired up couples with like interests at the dinner tables, so we met three lovely PCA couples from California, Washington State, and Pennsylvania, with a variety of Porsche models among us. Hemmings asked every couple to decorate the door of their stateroom with a collage of their past and present cars. It was a kick to roam the

halls checking out the pictures of just about every imaginable collector car made and some of the presentations were way over the top!

Between dining, attending intriguing automotive seminars by Hemmings staffers, touring Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, and just relaxing on deck, it was one of the fastest weeks we’ve ever spent. We highly recommend this annual event for an enjoyable cruise at a modest price with great car people.

Next Stop GermanyThen in May, after a two week Viking

Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, we flew up to Frankfurt and rented a VW for a quick four day trip to Stuttgart. I had found a nice little hotel online, which was within walking distance of both the Porsche Museum and a bakery with great coffee and German pastries for breakfast. Walt

Branscome, Porsche Santa Barbara, had very kindly put us in touch with Porsche public relations, so we had advance reservations for a morning factory tour.

Factory tour question: How many hides does it take to completely upholster a Porsche interior in leather? Answer: Five (very large hides) from cattle raised specifically for Porsche for this purpose!

We followed the tour with an excellent lunch in the Boxenstoppe cafe on the museum’s first floor before spending several hours wandering and taking pictures in the museum.

After a day trip to Heidelberg, we found time to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum before heading back on the autobahn to Frankfurt for our trip home. Fantastic trip, fascinating museums, and a gazillion photos! We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer; see you at an event soon. =

ATLANTA – At its session in late July, the Supervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, gave the green light

to series development of the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Reflecting the overwhelming response from the public and customers to the Concept Study, the Supervisory Board gave Porsche’s board of Management the mission to develop a production model based on the car already presented.

This concept version of an ultra-high-performance mid-engined sports car with

plug-in hybrid technology made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing, hitting headlines worldwide.

Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG: “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a

very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”

The Concept Study of the 918 Spyder allows CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km, corresponding to fuel consumption of 94.1 mpg imp in the New European Driving Cycle, on the one hand, and the performance of a super-sports car, on the other. This extremely efficient drivetrain technology forms a symbiosis in the 918 Spyder with truly outstanding design and high-tech motorsport achievements. Further product details of the 918 Spyder will be disclosed in the months to come. =

Promise yourself:To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
