How do you use a compass?

A compass is a device/instrument used to give the direction of places. A compass has a pointer which show where north is. This is used as a reference point from which all other directions are given.

When using a compass: 1. Draw a compass (imaginary) in the

centre of the map. 2. Label the north point (usually at the

top). 3. Label the other points; E, S, W etc.4. Now use your compass.

Practice using a compass by completing the following tasks.

TASK 1: Atlas, pg. 4-5. Give the eight(8) point compass directions for thefollowing places:

1. Southend-on-sea2. London 3. Cardiff4. Edinburgh5. Glasgow 6. Belfast

TASK 2: Atlas, pg. 4-5. Name one naturalfeature in each of the locations below:

7. North: 8. South: 9. East: 10. West:

TASK 3: Atlas pg. 9. Give the location of thefollowing places (Be as accurate as you can):

1. Essex: 2. Cornwall & Devon: 3. Highlands: 4. Aberdeenshire:
