It was great to see so many of you at our Winter Dinner at The Library in Wallingford. It was a fitting setting for us to get together and catch up on what’s new in our libraries.

Obiter Dicta April 4, 2017

Finally, we will be sending out ballots at the end of April to elect a Board for the coming year. I urge anyone who would like to become more involved with SNELLA to run for a position or volunteer for a committee for the coming year. We are a small, but strong, organization, and we can only remain that way with your participation.

SNELLA Members Give Public Librarian

Continuing Education Class on Legal Research

Those of us that work with the public know that there is a large gap between people who need legal assistance and those who actually get it. Those in this gap often attempt to represent themselves in court and are in need of legal information and assistance with how to find and use legal materials.

Many of these self-represented litigants visit one of the public law libraries in the state, but many do not. This can be due to inability to travel, inconvenient hours, or just that they do not know about them. As a result, public libraries are often on the front lines of providing legal information.

Recognizing this, in 2013 the Connecticut Judicial Branch Access to Justice Commission created a Workgroup on Public Libraries and Access to Justice. One of the many initiatives that emerged from this group was to provide instruction to public librarians in legal information and resources, increasing access to legal information for public librarians.

SNELLA members Chris Roy, Jeff Dowd, and Anne Rajotte, along with Judicial Branch Court Planner Cheryl Halford, developed a “hands on” legal research class. In this class, the participants received instruction in the Connecticut legal system and materials, how to find answers to common legal questions, how to conduct a legal reference interview, and the difference between providing legal information and providing legal advice. In addition to instruction, the participants had a chance to practice their new skills by working through typical legal reference questions with the assistance of the instructors, and even practicing legal reference interviews and receiving feedback.
