ed in the narthex. Please call the parish office if you

Faith Formation Program.
Dishes to ClaimWe are so grateful to everyone
who provides food for the various
meals that are served at our par-
ish! If you are missing your favorite
casserole dish or serving bowl,
chances are it is in the Lounge. All
dishes that are not claimed by No-
vember 30 will be absorbed into
our inventory or taken to a second
hand store. Thank you for your
help!
Thank you for your support of the
Catholic Campaign for Human Development!
More than 46 million Americans live
below the poverty line. Many are
working poor, struggling to better
their lives and meet their needs
and those of their families.
The Catholic Campaign for Human
Development stands alongside
poor and low-income people
helping to create permanent solu-
tions to poverty by funding com-
munity programs that encourage
independence. Catholics across
our country are part of the solution
to help break the cycle of pov-
erty.
The annual collection for the Cath-
olic Campaign for Human Devel-
opment (CCHD), a national anti-
poverty program of the Church,
will be held in our parishes the
weekend of November 17/18, on
the celebration of the second an-
n ua l W o r l d D a y o f t h e
Poor instituted by Pope Francis.
The efforts of the CCHD are sup-
ported almost entirely through this
collection. Your contribution,
made at whatever level you're
able to, will give those in poverty
the support they need to make
lasting changes. Thank you for your
generosity!
Twenty-five percent of the funds
collected in our parishes through
CCHD each year is retained by our
d iocese fo r loca l g rant s
to organizations within our commu-
nity.
“Behold the Lamb of God” John 1:36 As an American, I am very glad that our a nation has this Thursday, Thanksgiving,
as a national holiday. Perhaps, this very holiday makes the United States of Ameri-
ca unique in the world. A day in which its citizens thank God for all His blessings!
Furthermore, this celebration fits with our call to be Christian stewards because “as
Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly,
share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the
Lord” (Stewardship: Disciples Response, 2002). Gratitude must be at the heart of a
disciple of Jesus. I am grateful to the Lord for all of you! Thank you for your love,
friendship, and support in doing the work of God here in at SJP2 in Cedar Springs
and MQA in Sand Lake. Thank you for your invitation to enter into your lives in mo-
ments of joy as well as in times of sorrow. I cannot imagine a better community of
faith to be with as to be with all of you. Let’s grow together as faithful disciples of
Christ.
As an American with a Vietnamese heritage, my joy at Thanksgiving is increased
by the fact that the weekend of Thanksgiving is also the time that the universal
Church celebrate the feast of 117 Vietnamese Martyrs -- St. Andrew Dung Lac and
his companions. During the 17th-19th centuries in Vietnam, some 130,000 Christians
suffered cruel martyrdom, many by decapitation or strangulation. In the summer
of 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized 117 of them and decreed that they be hon-
ored in the calendar of the Church every year on November 24. Not too long
ago, I read these powerful words from the encyclical of Pope Benedict, Spe Salvi
no. 37 published on November 30, 2007:
. . . It is not by sidestepping or fleeing from suffering that we are healed,
but rather by our capacity for accepting it, maturing through it and find-
ing meaning through union with Christ, who suffered with infinite love. In
this context, I would like to quote a passage from a letter written by the
Vietnamese martyr Paul Le-Bao-Tinh († 1857) which illustrates this trans-
formation of suffering through the power of hope springing from faith. “I,
Paul, in chains for the name of Christ, wish to relate to you the trials be-
setting me daily, in order that you may be inflamed with love for God
and join with me in his praises, for his mercy is for ever (Ps 136 [135]). The
prison here is a true image of everlasting Hell: to cruel tortures of every
kind—shackles, iron chains, manacles—are added hatred, vengeance,
calumnies, obscene speech, quarrels, evil acts, swearing, curses, as well
as anguish and grief. But the God who once freed the three children
from the fiery furnace is with me always; he has delivered me from these
tribulations and made them sweet, for his mercy is for ever. In the midst
of these torments, which usually terrify others, I am, by the grace of God,
full of joy and gladness, because I am not alone —Christ is with me.”
How beautiful it is that a profound German-born pontiff sees a simple and yet
wholehearted witness of a person who ate with chopsticks and died for the faith
due to the many punishments at the hands of persecutors that used bamboo in
the form of blades. It shows that our Catholic faith is universal. People of all cul-
tures and lands are called to turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and recognize that that
Christ is with us. Thus, in times of joy or sorrow we are called to thank the Lord for
his abiding presence. Gratitude is a strong sign of a disciple of Jesus! “Give thanks
to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever” (Ps 107:1).
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
