Nursery Weekly Home Learning Suggestions
Week Beginning 4th May 2020
Suggestions for activities at home
Get Set Grow!
This week’s main theme is about how some animals grow and change. In particular, the
focus will be on the frog lifecycle.
Look out for frogspawn in ponds if you have a pond or have access to one nearby, or else
have a look at some pictures online and talk about what it is. Talk about what tadpoles are
and what they will become.
Main stages:
1. Frog eggs/frog spawn
2. Tadpole
3. Frog
(If you want to go into further detail, the tadpole grows back legs, then front legs then
it’s tail shrinks and it is called a froglet before becoming a frog).

Talk about other animals and how they grow and change.
Remind the children of the eggs we had at school and the ducklings that came out and how
they would grow and change into adult ducks.
Continue planting and growing seeds and beans, watering and caring for your seedlings.

Week Beginning 4th May 2020
Read or watch The Teeny Weeny Tadpole by Sheridan Cane and Jack Tickle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vRZuG11ZqU
The tadpole wants to be able to jump like a frog, but just can’t do it YET!
Last week we thought about what you can do now that you couldn’t do when you were a
baby.
This week ask your child to think about what they would like to be able to do that they
can’t do yet. For example, hopping on one leg, skipping, skipping with a skipping rope,
cartwheels, doing their own zip up, etc. You could ask them to choose one thing that they
might be able to practise to help them learn to do it.
Maths
Try making some frog spawn out of balls like ping pong balls in water, pom-poms, marbles,
water beads (Orbeez), googly eyes, or cooked cous cous, tapioca or chia seeds in water for
some sensory play.

Ask your child to count some out into different containers, practising saying one number
per object. For extra fine-motor skills practice, try using tongs and scoops to pick them
up.
Tuesday
Make some frog art and crafts.

You could even try to make a collage frog life cycle.
Bubble wrap makes a good collage material for frog spawn – you can even use a black
marker to draw some dots on.
Bubble wrap can also be used to print with paint – give it a try with different shades of
green to print a frog’s speckled skin.

You can use your 5 fingers to count down with the frogs, you could even draw froggy faces
on each finger, or make 5 little frog finger puppets.

If you have any toy frogs, or some pictures of frogs, have 5 at the start and ask your child
to take one away each time “one jumps into the pool”. If you have 5 people in your
household, you can all be frogs!
Ten Little Froggies – another song this time counting up to 10 and down again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvyhmbcHqvw
Wednesday
Read stories about baby animals and other creatures that grow and change, for example,
The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Maths
Use some numbers on lily pads and have a toy or cut-out frog to jump on different
numbers.
Try asking your child to put the frog on random numbers to see if they can recognise them,
then they could swap roles, with her/him giving the numbers for a sibling or parent/carer
to land the frog on. Or ask your child to jump up one number to find one more, or down one
number to find one less.
Try starting at different numbers and jumping to count up, or down from these different
numbers.
