Newly formed'Newcastle Junior Club,Westlakes, gave our local Balmain-RydeClub, North Ryde, a shock last week-endby defeating the Under 13s, and in thefinal 2 minutes of the Under 15 gamecame from behind to make a drawngame. Not a bad performance for afirst year club.Remember my prediction, Peakhurst

Under 17s to annex the St. George Asso-ciation Premiership, made 6 weeks ago?Well they did it, and to further prove a, point, the same club won the very strongUnder 9 Premiership.Schoolboy player L. Monahan is still

showing the form he exhibited in the1966 Schoolboys Carnival team. Thisyear he is a member of the N.S.W. (Un-der 17) Teal Cup team. The week end of August 26th-27th

will prove whether N.S.W. can repeatits performance of 1966,in the Shell Cup

with the Dragons throughout the season, however, there is little doubt that withthe fine youngsters available amongtheir reserves, S1. George will be knock-ing at the door next season.

The Bears can look forward to the1968 season with optimism, as there isan abundance of talent among theirranks. The side was capably led by coach

Graham Long and ably supported byrovers Lou Muir, Les Gillies, ruckmanPeter Ord and full back Ian Allen.

Murray. It is our painful duty to report the

sudden' death in Malaya of one of thegreat Saints of earlier years-Ern Jacobs.Ern was Captain Coach in the early andmiddle 1950's and proved himself a bril-liant ruckman, outstanding leader and areally great fellow. To his family oursincere sympathy. .The Walsh Award has reached an in-

teresting stage. Ralph Todd still leadson 36 points despite having played only19 games. He is hotly pressed by DaleDalton on 31, Bob Stirling on 26 andGeoff Green 21.John Mayne is a clear Reserve Grade

leader with 24. His nearest pursuers areDon Smith 15, Pat McCourt 11 and BrianLangton 11.

Although seriously weakened by fur-ther injuries Saints had little troublewith Souths.Easily our best was Bob Stirling with

a great game in the centre. Other goodperformances came from Wally Wallis,Graham Kemp, Kim Smith and Bill Wil-lats.The Reserves also bolted in and were

,best served by Peter Kilmister, JohnMayne, Nev Shaw and Bill Pickford.Herb stringer returned to the side anddemonstrated all his renowned goalscoring skill.Sydney Naval proved too strong for

our Firsts who nevertheless acquittedthemselves well in particularly in thelast half. Best players: Geoff Argus,Rich-ard Formosa, Kerry Cook and Garry

SYDNEY NAVAL CLUB NOTES NEWTOWN CLUB NOTESThe sweet taste of success for the

Firsts and the bitter taste of defeat forthe Seconds is the story of last week'sgames. The Firsts had a resounding victory

over a hard working University side.Best for Navy being Peter Body, KevinBatchelor, Dinny Mandelis and the oldstager Jack Dean. The Seconds were soundly beaten by

a far swifter University of New SouthWales team. Best for Navy were WallySpeed, Ray Bowles and Terry Menadue. The Club would like to welcome back

Jack Harding and Tassie Cusack to the

playing ranks. This week we play North Shore at

North Sydney Oval on Saturday, and St.George at Olds Park on Sunday. Let'sfinish the season with a bang and win allgrades. Our congratulations are offered to

Army on their Inter-Services Competi-tion win.

On the social side. Agter the game onSunday we are the guests of ArncliffR.S.L. for a social gathering. All play-ers and supporters are asked to attendand wind up the season on a happy note.

• Once again the juniors were the oneswho stole the limelight at the week-endwith a 52-8 win over Wests in the secondsemi final of the Newtown D.A.F.A. underthirteen competition. They are now firmfavourites to win their sixth consecutivepremiership. Again it was a team effort, and to pick a best and fairest would beimpossible. .Congratulations to the boys and to

their coach Gordon Keane for a job welldone. .The Second Grade had an impressive

win at the expense of Easts with a 45-40win. If the side had played this much

vigour earlier they would now be in thefight for the finals. Andy Stewart wasour best player and was ably assisted byKev Degnan, Ray "Hungry" Hannan,John Egan, Kev. Egan, Mick Elementand Ken Pinker. The Firsts paid the toll for not playing

four quarters of football and lost to adetermined Easts side by four points. Abig effort is needed this week and a winwill assure us of second place. The cricket team has begun practice

and anyone interested in playing shouldcontact Kev Bolton, Ray Judd or JohnArmstrong.

Characteristic of the Choreography of the Exponents of the Art of Australian Football is the ADAPTION of the Motifs and Modes of the Native Fauna ofTerra Australis. Swift as the Emu - Agile as the Kangaroo - in the - running -. boitncing -..:...kicking - game bestowed in our birthright by the pioneer families ofThomas Wentworth Wills and Henry Colden Antill Harrison from the State of New. South Wales. A Game - so fast and furious - stopped only by the clock for thesiren to signal the end of the play. The hazards - of - tackling - bumping with hips and shoulders - winded and writhing from the bone bruising impacts of physicalcontacts - do not - excuse the Umpire - to - stop the torrent of the flowing tides of the changes in the game, in the swiftly passing Quarters of the allotted twenty-fiveplus the ominous deadly ticking of Tim.e-on to decide the issue by a single point, in tl$ fraction of a second, one hundred and twenty minutes after the first bouncing ofthe ball.
