Arroyo Seco Via is an exciting community happen-
ing hosted by the Arroyo Seco Foundation and
our sponsors. It will feature a bike ride between
Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena and
Los Angeles State Historic Park (The Cornfield) in
downtown Los Angeles. Each of these two parks
will have a distinct program. Hahamongna will
feature a commemorative ceremony of the park’s
20th anniversary and regional water pioneers, as
well as exhibits showcasing the area’s unique eco-
logical value. The Cornfield will host a rally in sup-
port of Los Angeles River restoration and activities
related to Southern California Cyclocross.
Our Goal
The goal of Arroyo Seco Via is to promote a dedi-
cated bikeway between downtown Los Angeles
and the San Gabriel Valley for commuters and
recreational users. Funds raised from the festive
activities will be used for a technical feasibility
study that will define a route and determine cost
estimates for the bikeway. The study will be con-
ducted by professional engineer Peter Jacobsen,
an internationally prominent expert on bicycle
safety and the author of Century of Bikes, Pasa-
dena’s bike plan developed in 2000.
Why Arroyo Seco Via?
While there will not be street closures, Arroyo
Seco Via is very much in the spirit of CicLAvia,
where hundreds of thousands of Southern Californi-
ans have been able to ride, walk, and enjoy the
streets of Los Angeles. However, Arroyo Seco Via has
a more definite focus: promotion of the development
of a dedicated bikeway along the Arroyo Seco that will
provide recreational benefits and serve as a transpor-
tation alternative to clogged freeways.
A Transportation Alternative for Tomorrow
Arroyo Seco Via is part of a grassroots campaign for
transportation alternatives and sustainable manage-
ment of the Arroyo Seco watershed, a major tributary
of the Los Angeles River. Trails for bicyclists, pedestri-
ans, equestrians, and wildlife are an essential element
of this campaign, linking the communities and cultural
landmarks of Southern California’s most celebrated
canyon. By supporting Arroyo Seco Via, you help us
take a big step closer to a continuous system of parks
and trails linking the San Gabriel and Santa Monica
Mountains.
From top to bottom, the Arroyo Seco is home to an
amazing array of historic and cultural features. Riders
will pass by the San Gabriel Mountains, Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, the Rose Bowl, the Colorado Street
Bridge, the South Pasadena Nature Park, the Audubon
Center at Debs Park, Sycamore Grove Park, the Lum-
mis Home, Heritage Square, and the Arroyo Seco’s
confluence with the Los Angeles River.
