However, we are pleased to advice that a group of local members, being Ron Welsh OAM, Geoff Boyton, Ken Dighton & Cheryl Richardson now form the committee for the Newcastle Region. I am sure that we can look forward to a continuation of the excellent regular lunch events at Newcastle with this group in charge. “SOMEONE ONCE TOLD ME THAT THE BIGGEST ROOM IN THE WORLD IS THE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT” Your committee is working hard on IMPROVING the way we do things and organise events that will benefit & recognise a greater number of our members. One of the important objectives of ANZROC is to continually monitor the Health & Wellbeing of our Members & provide support if needed. I know I am stating the obvious when I say that we are an Ageing Membership and sometimes knowledge of a members health issues can slip through the cracks. With the retirement of our Legendary Welfare Officer, Ken Dighton, from this month the Committee has reviewed the expanding duties attached to the role of Welfare Officer & how best to manage the workload into the future. In this regard we have created 2 Welfare Officer posts and I am pleased to advise that Phil Cohen & Ron Miller have nominated to take on the new roles. We are in the process of finalising some new initiatives on how we contact & recognise our HONS & MEMBERS ON THE SICK LIST going forward & how we split these duties to gain the best outcome for our members and reduce the workload on our Welfare Officers. These will be announced to the greater membership over the next month. However, one simple request the committee makes of the broader club membership is that if you become aware of any of our fellow members having health issues, please refer the matter to either of our Welfare Officers. Sometimes, Family advise us and sometimes we pick up the issue through our regular contact with our HONS, but often neither happens and a second advice will help make sure we do not miss this important Club objective. In the body of our Newsletter are details of our recent lunches and of upcoming events that have so far been planned for the 2nd half of 2021. Our recent lunch at the Chatswood Business Club was well attended and everyone had a great day. We have had some great feedback, including recommendations that we utilise the venue again. Covid has placed restrictions on attracting members to our Metropolitan events. The Committee have chosen venues that are easy to access by Public Transport or have easy parking facilities & member safety is paramount at all times when making our decisions. Unfortunately, Covid will be a part of our life for a long time. Please consider returning to our organised lunches that are convenient to you and catching up with some old acquaintances. We would love to see you. Finally, we would welcome members recommendations of any venue they consider would suit our requirements. Please forward recommendations to Angelo Briganti at [email protected] Stay Safe Terry Auld President 2

Nostalgia This article was sent in by our Web Master Peter Goreman.

Peter commented as follows:- In gratefulness to a wonderful banker and a wonderful Bank! I wrote elsewhere about my time with the ANZ Bank - see http://athomeatriverbend.blogspot.com/2015/07/send-me-something.html - which shaped my future like no other period in my life, My two years with the ANZ Bank gave me the time to complete my accountancy studies (by correspondence with the HEMINGWAY ROBERTSON INSTITUTE; they also gave correspondence courses for the Bankers' Institute examinations; remember them?) and to start my new

career in chartered accounting, first in New Guinea and then farther afield. The late Mr Robert Reid, the then manager of the ANZ Bank in Canberra Civic, hired me as a youngster, fresh off the boat from Germany, and gave me the chance of a new start in a new country. He even gave me, two years later and totally against bank policy, this personal reference to help me on my way. I will forever owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Mr Reid and the ANZ Bank! Sent in by Glen Fitzpatrick. Following a recent family trip through South Australia.

Glen commented as follows:- Hi Graeme, I hope that you and the family are all well. Just flew back on Saturday from a 4 month caravaning trip through South Australia where we discovered some amazing places and met some fantastic people. On our return to our daughters place in the Barossa we detoured through Snowtown, the site of "The bodies in the barrels" murders, a bit macabre I know. I was speaking with a lady at the post Office who turned out to be the daughter of an ex ANZer from SA, Robert Howell, who was instrumental in the revival of the old English Scottish and Australian Bank branch at Snowtown, see attached picture. We were later talking to a chap at the local Mens Shed who asked if we would like to visit the Bank SA where the infamous barrels were stored with the bodies, we agreed and he called his friend who now owns it who agreed to open it up for us to take a look, Photos attached of this also. It was a very eerie feeling being in there I can tell you. The new owner installed the plaque above the strongroom. Perhaps this or some may be of interest to ANZROC readers. Hope to catch up in the not too distant future. Kind regards Glenn

Correspondence from Members On Ian Foote. Phil Newsome wrote:- I was sad to hear the passing of Ian Foote. I spent 8 years of my ANZ life in Tamworth and Footie was there all that time in Lending or Lending Support roles.. A good man. My sympathy to Narelle and his family Phil Newsome On Lance Phillis. Ian Jarratt wrote. Hello Graeme, Remember Lance well, respected member of the Bank and a good guy. Ray Brennan wrote:- A good man, good banker. Lance could always be relied upon. I really appreciated his no nonsense approach to life. Judith Willis wrote:- I had a great shock when I opened mail to find an old friend of mine has passed. I knew Lance from work I had started in 1950 - old Bank of Australasia and I remember seeing him there at one stage. I am pretty sure also that we went to the same church which was then across the road from where I lived in Cromwell St. I remember his face. Like most of us in the Bank we moved around quite a bit but it for me has stood me personally in good stead. I'm sure it did for Lance. My sincere condolences to his family. I will let a few other friends know as well. Farewell Lance. R.I.P. Arthur Crittenden wrote:- I recall Lance from my days in Newcastle and later Sydney where our paths crossed several times during our careers. Happy times prevailed always, Lance was a dedicated banker always friendly and receptive, I. Am sure will be missed by many. Sincere condolences to Lance's Family and friends. Geoff Minett wrote:- Thank you Graeme regarding Lance.. I worked with him at Manly Branch when he was OIC at Balgowlah in 1962 and me as a young recruit Lance helped me immensely and was a wizard on balancing daily ledgers and monthly extractions. He gave me many equations regarding transpositions, divisions by nine etc. Liked a beer, as did we all, and limited himself to 1 schooner a day, being newly married. Kind regards Geoff Minett Ken Dighton wrote:- I knew Lance when he was Manager Gordon. I was at Wyong, also in Hornsby/Central Coast Area. He and I used to be a united front against the then Area Manager. Sorry to read of LANCE ‘s passing always enjoyed his company played many good rounds of golf back in the old days. One of the good guys. RIP

Thanks Graeme Sorry news indeed. Ron Miller On Carl Fleming. Roy Crawford wrote:- Am saddened to hear of Carl’s passing, another loss from my early days on the road with a memorable bunch of internal auditors. Carl was a big congenial man and good company with a glass in his hand at the local watering hole. RIP. Roy Crawford

Ken Dighton wrote:-

I spoke with Carl Fleming last August when he was 87, and he said he expected to make 97! Perhaps tongue in cheek, but probably consistent with the Fleming Family humour.

Reg Smeaton wrote:-

I was Operations Officer Wagga while Carl was at Berrigan, so had a fair bit to do with him and he was always easy to get along with and a likeable bloke. Ron Miller wrote:- Thanks Graeme Sorry news indeed. Ron Miller
