PREFACE

Engineering is a highly specialized profession and

need less to say Engineers are a blessed group of

professionals. The Engineering education equips one to

blend the knowledge of science, the rigor of mathematics

and logical reasoning come up with cost effective solutions

to practical problems. Such solutions also derive strength

from acquired experience and tacit knowledge. By its very

nature, Engineering is bound up with society and human

growth.

The profession of Engineering leads to a self-

actualization driven by societal commitment and

acceptability and could be consequence of a long march.

But the budding engineers are nurtured through a systemic

training process, under the tutelage of experienced and

committed faculty members. These Engineering Gurus

have always remained dedicated to the teaching

profession, through continued improvement of knowledge

through research and consultancy, thereby offering to the

profession and society a rich resourcefulness and long

standing tradition. The saga of a long march of a Teacher

in training an engineering student from undergraduate to

post graduate studies and doctoral dissertation

further, thus needs a special recognition. At present there

is no forum to recognize the distinguished engineering

teachers of this state, who have done yeoman service to the

cause of technical education in Kerala, with a societal

awareness and commitment.

The Kochi Chapter of RECCAA/NITCAA noted this

omission and decided to institute the award in the honor of

the late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut

Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing

professionals of the present day engineering profession will

recall with gratitude and awe all the outstanding qualities

that Prof. Bahauddin exhibited in his long march as an

Engineering teacher and educationist with a laudable

vision. With over 140 engineering college in the state, this

community has attained a sizable strength and by

identifying and honoring the distinguished engineering

teacher of Kerala, NITCAA is filling a gap by this biennial

award.

Prof. (Dr.) K.M. BAHAUDDIN AWARD will be the

most coveted award for an engineering Teacher in Kerala

State. The award will be presented once in two years to the

distinguished engineering teacher selected by an expert

committee based on the procedure prescribed. The first

award was presented in the Annual General Body Meeting

scheduled to be held at Cochin during January 2012.

I am also grateful to all those who are involved in

this great endeavor to promote skill, talent, commitment,

devotion to duty among engineering teachers.

HISTORY OF RECCAA COCHIN

CHAPTER

The beginning of the alumni association of REC/NIT

Calicut in Cochin can be pinpointed to the altruism shown

to a fellow alumnus. Suma of the 1972 batch was crippled

by a severe form of arthritis shortly after she passed out

from college. Her batchmates in Ernakulam and other

alumni with Prof. Jussay in the lead role helped her get

treatment, arranged a small business for her, visited her

and tried in many ways to make her life comfortable.

This led to more frequent casual meetings between small

groups with Sudesh Jain, M. R. Devadas and a few others

meeting regularly at Bharat Tourist Home (popularly

known as BTH). While they had mooted the idea of an

alumni association, the idea took off once when Sudesh

Jain met Prof. Jussay for advice on a problem at his

factory. The initial group of alumni split up into smaller

groups and visited factories around Ernakulam to

mobilise alumni.

The first meeting of REC Calicut alumni to organise an

alumni chapter in Cochin was held in Matha Tourist

Home on 12th July 1984. The enthusiasm of the alumni

and faculty was reflected in the attendance of about 70 old

students along with Prof. K. M. Bahauddin, Prof. P. M.

Jussay, Prof. Babu T. Jose, Mr. K. Balasubramanian, Mr.

Mohanachandran and the principal of the Regional

Engineering College at that time, Dr. Unnikrishnan Pillai.

Sadick's house was a focal point for the pioneer alumni

such as M. R. Devadas, K. M. Michael, Sudesh Jain, Chil

Prakash, Francis Paul, Gopakumar and others to organise

Page 17: November 2017. Prof. K.M. Bahauddin Award.pdfthe late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing professionals of the present day

the alumni chapter and the RECCAA Enclave. Though a

lot of ground work was done there to form the alumni

association, the main attraction may have been the mutton

biriyani, pathiri, chicken curry, unnakai and other

delicacies prepared by Mrs. Sadick and served after the

meetings which were sometimes held six or seven days a

week.

The Cochin chapter of the Regional Engineering College,

Calicut Alumni Association was formally inaugurated at

a dinner meeting at A. M. Sadick's house on the 15th

August 1984 with about 140 people in attendance.

Prof. Jussay proposed buying land for RECCAA Cochin's

first housing project in 1985 to allow salaried alumni to

own a residential plot on convenient payment terms. It

was a daring venture due to the obstacles in place at that

time and paucity of funds, with each alumnus involved

playing an important role in the acquisition and

conversion of 7 acres of land to realise the 'RECCAA

Enclave' residential area at Padamugal in Kakkanad. The

Cochin RECCAA Centre was formed in XXXX with Dr.

Babu T. Jose as President and Satheesha Baboo as

Secretary to manage assets on behalf of alumni members.

About 4 acres of land was purchased in the name of

Cochin RECCAA Centre near the Ernakulam

Collectorate.

The success of the first housing project of RECCAA

Cochin and the active involvement of Prof. Jussay and Dr.

Babu T. Jose inspired the formation of a registered

RECCAA Housing Society in 1990 to carry out the

Page 18: November 2017. Prof. K.M. Bahauddin Award.pdfthe late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing professionals of the present day

mandatory procedures required to acquire housing plots

for its members. The dedicated and selfless work of Prof.

P. M. Jussay, Dr. Babu T. Jose, A. M. Sadick, M. R.

Devadas, Joseph Philip, Avarachen A. G., K. M. Michael,

Mathew M. Mathew and K. P. Alexander saw the

acquisition of about 14 acres of land in Kakkanad.

After some of the area acquired was registered to

members by 1995 the remaining 7 acres of land is now

under the stewardship of the RECCAA Charitable

Society.

The Cochin chapter conducted two industrial exhibitions,

one in 1992 at the Marine Drive grounds and the second

in 1995 at Manattiparambu. It is pertinent to note that

these were the only major industrial exhibitions to be

conducted in Kerala State till today other than the small

district level industrial fairs conducted mostly by the

Department of Industries. The industrial exhibition was

considered respectable enough for Maruti Suzuki to

launch one of their automobiles in Kerala in 1992. The

profit generated from this industrial exhibition was used

to purchase an office space for the chapter opposite the

Ernakulam Town (North) railway station.

The RECCAA Charitable Society was registered as a

charitable society in 2007. The Cochin RECCAA Centre,

the RECCAA Housing Society and the RECCAA Club

have been merged into the RECCAA Charitable Society

(RCS). The current project under the RCS is the

construction of a club on 3 acres of land in Kakkkanad to

provide a space for alumni to communicate and to

network. Charitable work is a major priority of the RCS

Page 19: November 2017. Prof. K.M. Bahauddin Award.pdfthe late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing professionals of the present day

while a long term goal is to utilise the experience and

expertise of REC/NIT Calicut alumni for the greater good.

There were hardly half a dozen engineering colleges in

Kerala ten years ago. This figure shot up to well over a

hundred institutions in the last few years. It was not

surprising that parents and students were equally confused

about the standards and facilities in these colleges and

when it came to the choice of the college to seek

admission. RECCAA conducted two rating exercises of

engineering colleges in Kerala to assist aspirants. A

detailed questionnaire which was commended by Dr. A.

Sridharan, former Chairman AICTE Regional

Committee, as the best of its kind ever formulated in

India, was circulated among the engineering colleges. We

had REC/NIT Calicut alumni from all districts of the state

supporting the survey activity. We are pleased to note that

many institutions used our ratings to enhance their

reputation by giving wide publicity through the press and

prospectus. This exercise helped the Cochin chapter to

spread its alumni activity over the entire state.

The Cochin chapter of RECCAA/NITCAA was the

main contributor to the Silver Jubilee Endowment Trust

of the parent chapter.

The Cochin chapter has the honour of conducting the

World NITCA Meet in August 2011 in the Golden Jubilee

year of the National Institute of Technology, Calicut.

In commemoration of the World NITCAA event, the

Cochin chapter proposed to institute two awards; one in

the name of Prof. K. M. Bahauddin, the architect of REC

the founder of RECCAA Cochin chapter.

REC or NIT Calicut is celebrating its Golden jubilee in

the year of 2011. The individual, who has made the most

significant contributions to the growth of this institution,

is obviously Prof. K. M. Bahauddin who led the institute

during its infancy. He is undoubtedly the architect of NIT

Calicut. The all-round growth the institute acquired

during his stewardship is unique and unparalleled.

Early Life

Prof. Bahauddin was born on 3rd May 1929 in Paravur,

Kerala, India. His father Kochukunju, a timber merchant,

passed away when he was still a toddler. He spent his

childhood in Paravur under the care and guidance of his

mother Najumma who played a pivotal role during his

formative years. He attended the school at Kottappuram

English High School.

After completing his Intermediate examination from the

University of Travancore, he joined Aligarh University to

study Civil Engineering. During his days at Aligarh, he

had a clear vision about his career. While being an

assiduous and committed student, he also excelled in

extracurricular activities. While at Aligarh, he was

mentored by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the third president of

India. In March 1950 he graduated in Civil Engineering

from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh

Muslim University.

Career as an Engineer

In October 1950 Prof. Bahauddin started his career as an

Engineer in Kerala PWD and was involved in the

construction of Malampuzha dam. However, realizing

that his calling was for an academic career, he returned to

Aligarh Muslim University as Lecturer in Civil

Engineering.

Later he went to the University of Manchester for his post

graduate studies. He graduated from there on December

12, 1957 with a Masters degree. In May of 1958 he joined

Durgapur Steel Plant as Concrete Design Engineer. He

organised and directed the quality control laboratory there

and also took over the technical control of foundry

construction. Later on he moved to the Rourkela Steel

Plant and was involved in its construction as well.

After this short stint in the industry he decided to move

back to academics and returned to the Department of Civil

Engineering at Aligarh University. The industrialisation

of late fifties required a large number of trained engineers.

This resulted in the creation of 15 Regional Engineering

Colleges (REC), one in each major state. The REC in

Kerala was established at Kozhikode in 1961. Prof.

Bahauddin moved to this institue in 1962 while REC

Calicut was still in its infancy. In 1965 he became the

professor and head of the Department of Civil

Engineering. When Dr. M.V. Kesava Rao, the first

principal of REC, Calicut retired, Prof. Bahauddin took

over. He was formally appointed as the Principal of this

college in 1968, at the young age of 40, which could still

be a record.

Page 23: November 2017. Prof. K.M. Bahauddin Award.pdfthe late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing professionals of the present day

Regional Engineering College, Calicut

The REC Calicut went through its adolescent years under

Prof Bahauddin's leadership. Being a Civil Engineer at

heart, he took up the challenge of building up the

infrastructure for this institute with limited funds that

were available to the college. He said - "If you exercise

your arms, you will have strong arms. But your legs would

still be weak". This vision led to the all-round

developmental activities he brought in at REC, Calicut.

Apart from being a premier institute of learning, REC was

also the champion of Calicut University in almost every

game. REC also excelled in fine arts at the university and

regional level. The popularity of the orchestra was

phenomenal - a unique achievement for a professional

college. An inter-collegiate Arts festival - Ragam, was

held at the college to encourage the students who had

talent in the arts.

The Technology exhibitions organised during his time

received massive support from the students who used this

as a opportunity to showcase their technical abilities,

while the general public got an opportunity to witness the

developments at the frontier areas of technology and to

interact with the college. Many of the student projects

were well ahead of their time and often caught the

attention of the local press. All these gave an opportunity

for students to develop organizational and leadership

skills.

At a time when governmental funding was scarce, he

recognised the need to tap into other sources of funding.

He lead a mission to Ethiopia from where he was able to

REC, Calicut. The funds obtained through this program

helped to build the International Hostel.

Aligarh Muslim University

When Mr. Syed Hamid was nominated to take

over the Vice Chancelorship of Aligarh University in

1980, he approached Prof. Bahauddin to work with him

as his trusted lieutenant. In June of 1980 Prof. Bahauddin

moved back to his Alma Mater as it's Pro Vice-

Chancellor.

In 1985 he accepted the position of Executive

Director at National Institute of Educational Planning and

Administration (NIEPA). He retired from this position in

1989.

Prof. Bahauddin took keen interest in the well being of

REC alumni. He followed the career of each alumnus (his

boys!) with a paternal affection. On his return from Delhi,

he took keen interest in the activities of the Cochin chapter

and used to attend all important meetings in spite of his

indifferent health.

His contribution as an educationist is well known at

national level. The report titled “Performance Appraisal

Systems for Teachers in Technical and Management

Institutions” published in 1993 is still a premier document

on the topic. His contribution to the U. R. Anantha Murthy

Commission report on education is widely acclaimed. He

also served as a member of the Indian Delegation on

Education Collaboration to Ethiopia and as Deputy

Page 25: November 2017. Prof. K.M. Bahauddin Award.pdfthe late principal of Regional Engineering College, Calicut Prof. K.M. BAHAUDDIN. Many of the practicing professionals of the present day

Leader of the Indian Mission to Iraq for establishing

polytechnics.

The books he authored “Kerala Muslims: History of their

struggle” and “Kerala Social Structure” are well accepted

reference documents.

He had a humane touch in all his administrative decisions.

Many of his colleagues at REC Calicut remember with

gratitude, his help and guidance in building careers for

themselves.

The role played by Prof. Bahauddin to protect the rights

of his student on one occasion, won special mention by

the Hon. High Court of Kerala. The judgment described

Prof. Bahauddin as the silver lining!

Prof. K.M. Bahauddin left us for his heavenly abode on

Sunday March 20, 2011. His life and contributions will be

cherished by all who came across him. It is heartening to

note that NITCAA, Cochin chapter is planning to institute

an award in his memory. It will be a fitting tribute to this

great soul.
