A successful first meeting of Year 10 and Year 11 students interested in becoming SMILE mentors, took place recently. It was exciting to see so many students wanting to become involved in this inspiring program. The official training day for the mentors is Tuesday 17th December. Students are reminded to please mark this date in their diary! Any student who missed the Meeting and would still like to be involved, please see Mrs Gorman ASAP.

SRC Celebrates 1$Day
Our SRC recently celebrated “1$Day” by holding a cake stall at Recess and Lunchtime plus
collected donations during Roll/RATS. Congratulations to all involved and to everyone who
donated to this worthy cause.
From the Principal
Congratulations again to our String Orchestra who were invited to perform at the Sydney Opera House recently in the Endeavour Concert as part of the Choral Festival 2013. Below is copy of another email sent about their exemplary performance.
Dot Panaretos
“I attended the ENDEAVOUR CONCERT at the Concert Hall last
night to see my daughter from Petersham Public School perform
in the Combined School Choir. My husband and I have attended
many of these evenings for both my son and daughter.
We were absolutely floored by the performance given by your
STRING ORCHESTRA. It is simply the best individual
performance we have seen through 7 years of attending these
events. The playing standard and musicality of the orchestra
was exceptional and their combined composure and
professionalism was testimony to the great work you must be
doing at the school.
Congratulations to the Orchestra and to Ann Phelan for her
amazing work. The response from the audience was huge, so I
hope they all know how brilliantly they did. What an amazing
achievement.
All the very best with your continued success.”

Sport News 14’s Boys Cricket
On Thursday 24th October our Years 7 and 8 boys’ cricket team played Orara High
School in a 40 over game. After winning the toss, electing to bat, we got off to a
slow start with the Captain dismissed for 1 in the 2nd over. Some brilliant batting
by Byron Auld (73) and Beau Alty (68) steadied the ship with a partnership of 141.
After a middle order batting collapse the whole team finished with 221, which was a
great score.
Orara got off to a great start with 1/90 off the first 14 overs. After a drinks
break, the team improved their bowling and began to field much tighter. Some
brilliant bowling by Sam Taylor, Byron Auld, Beau Alty and Joel Kearsley saw Orara
fall 33 runs short with Sam Taylor getting 4/39 (8), and Beau Alty 2/22 (8). Well
done boys. Our next game is against
Dorrigo High.
14 Years Girls Cricket
The Bellingen High School 14’s girls’ cricket team played Coffs Harbour High School
in the first round of the North Coast Knockout on Friday, 25th October at Connell
Park. For most of our girls it was their first ever game of cricket, so when we got
sent in to bat, many of the girls were quite nervous. Captain Katie opened the
batting with Alex McNeil and both looked comfortable out in the centre, however,
on a number of occasions forgot to run. Wickets were to fail quite regularly and
unfortunately, the girls were unable to bat out their 20 overs and were all out for
78. Sarah Ludwig top scored with 12 not out, showing that she will have to be
moved up the order.
With this modest total to defend it was always going to be hard, however, the girls
never gave up and fielded very well. The bowling was a little inconsistent with too
many wides and no balls, so something to work on. Coffs Harbour passed our score
in the tenth over with the loss of four wickets.
Some real highlights of the game included:
* our girls getting the prized wickets of their two representative players;
* great wicket keeping by both Jazz Brightwell and Niamh Hiller-Stanbrook
including two stumpings to Niamh;
* fantastic fielding by all;
* a supportive and positive attitude throughout the day;
* Special thank you to Asama Radford and Jordan Newbound for umpiring on
the day; and
* Most of these girls will still be in the team next year
Well done girls!

14 Years Boys Cricket
Last Thursday (31st October) the U14 boys cricket team travelled up to Dorrigo to
play their 2nd knockout game. We lost the toss and were sent into bat. After
getting off to a great start Captain Beau Alty fell for 22 (caught). Then Byron
Auld and Sam Taylor got into a rhythm took our score to over 130. Highlights for
the batting included Byron Auld hitting 92, Sam got 35 and Jack Meenahan just
falling short on his 50 on 48. The lower order put in a great performance with Joel
Kearsley not out on 11, Jonah Mitchell 5 and Aaron Rigney not out 5 off 2 balls.
Total score was a whopping 251!
Back row - Sarah Ludwig, Niamh
Hiller-Stanbrook, Jazz Brightwell,
Storm McLean, Annalie Bardsley,
Taya Kostas, Tymeka Murcott
Middle row - Kristin Mason, Lia
Grosvenor, Alex McNeil
Front row - Katie Thorn, Jasmine Nolan
Taking to the field we were switched on and enthusiastic. The bowling attack saw a
massive collapse in Dorrigo’s middle order. Bellingen bowled Dorrigo out for a paltry
90 runs. Bowling figures were: Beau Alty 2/10 off 5 overs, Byron Auld 2/7 off 4,
Leighton Borthwick 2/1 off 2, Isaac Allman 1/4 off 1, Cooper Kearsley 1/8 off 2,
Aaron Rigney 1/10 off 2 and Jonah Mitchell 1/13 off 2.
Well played boys! Great effort to all! Looking forward to playing Coffs High School
next Thursday in Round 3.

Australian Futsal Titles
The first teams to compete at the Australian Futsal Champion of Champions were
the 16 years girls and the 15 years boys. The 16 years girls did extremely well
through the entire tournament. Their passing game was second to none with the
biggest concern, could they go the distance!
Day 1 – the girls up and ready to go
Bellingen High defeated Camden Haven High 8-2
(Jess Marks 4, Sam Barker 2, Brie Thomas 1, Stella Robinson 1)
Bellingen High defeated St Andrews College, Cairns 7-4
(Sam Barker 4,Jess Marks 2, Brie Thomas 1)
Bellingen High defeated Maclean High 9-6
(Jess Marks 5, Brie Thomas 2, Zali Rees 2)
Day 2 – the girls a little tired
Bellingen High defeated Chancellor College 4-2
(Jess Marks 4)
Bellingen High lost to Marsden College 2-3
(Jess Marks 1, Brie Thomas 1)
Bellingen High defeated Sarina College 10-3
(Jess Marks 5, Zali Rees 2, Sam Barker 1, Amelia Brewin 1,
Millie King 1)
Bellingen High defeated St Peter Clavier 5-3
(Jess Marks 4, Sam Barker 1)
Day 3 – the girls very tired
Bellingen High lost to Robina 3-5
(Sam Barker 2, Brie Thomas 1)
This meant we finished in 1st place overall as we had more goals than Marsden High
School and would have to take on Chancellor College in the semi-final. In a game
where Bellingen dominated it appeared more and more like the ball could not or
would not find its way into the net. Brie Thomas slotted one in to put us in front
but as the game went on the score did not change despite many brilliant lead up
plays. In the last two minutes Chancellor scored to tie the game up and put us into
golden goal extra time. Finally great lead up work saw Jess Marks score and we
were into the final.
This meant our 10th and final game would be against other semi-final winner St
Andrews who defeated Marsden in a penalty shoot-out. The girls were pumped for
the final when they took the court. Both Jess and Sam hit the post early in the
game and things were looking like it would be hard to score. Sam put a great long
ball to Jess at far post who headed it in putting us one up. Then towards the end
of the half Sam scored a great shot from wide near half. The girls were happy at
half time with the score 2-0 but there was still 20 minutes to go. They took the
court second half and St Andrews scored almost straight away. This sparked the
opposition who began throwing everything at us. Unfortunately, the girls started
getting injured and running out of legs, as constant substitutions had to be made.
St Andrews were relentless as the game slipped away and the final score blew out
to 5-2. The girls were gallant in defeat and worthy runners up at the Australian
Titles. After 9½ games it was the last 20 minutes that beat them.
Sam Barker was deservedly named in the All Stars team. Great work to one and
all.
