Greetings Friends, Happy Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for this year! Lots of our snowbird friends are returning. The weather is cooling down. Best of all, we escaped the horrible devastation of Hurricane Michael. Our hearts go out to our fellow Floridians in the Panhandle area.
We also appreciate our many veterans and their families. On this 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, we praise their service and their sacrifice in all conflicts. Thank you!!!!

Christmas Project for Veterans Village
Gallon-sized “ditty bags” are made by some of the Saddle Oak Stitchers and filled by members
of SOC for the veterans at the Veterans Village in Ocala. These bags are to be filled with
snacks and small gifts and/or gift cards. They especially like the small snacks. A suggestion list
is inside each bag. A Christmas card is enclosed in each bag for you to sign and any comment
you to make. Ditty bags will be available Nov. 3, to fill for the 50 residents at the Veterans
Village. All bags need to be returned to Joann Barber by Dec. 2. Questions? Call Joann at

Photos for Veterans Board at Clubhouse
Veterans Day is coming up on November 11th. Saddle Oak has a Veterans Honor Board in the
foyer of the clubhouse. If you would like to have your picture added to the Honor Board please
contact Nancy Dougherty at 920-765-2005. We will need a picture and basic information such
as your name, years of service and the branch of military.
Hope to see your face on the board!!
Sunshine Report
Hospitalization/illness:
Pat Coughlin returned to Ocala Regional Hospital, as of the date this went to press.
Angie Bauman is in rehab at Hawthorne. So, too, is Henry (Bert) Berthiaume.
Bereavement:
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Sue DeWachter on August 23rd. Services were
held in her home state of Michigan.
Meet and Greet for New Residents
On Friday, November 2 the Handbook Committee and Board of Directors is holding a Meet and
Greet for new park residents who arrived during 2018. Invitations have been delivered. If you
are new in 2018 and did not receive an invitation, please contact Carolyn Miller (300-3562).
Come have some refreshments and find out more about your new community.
Page 4
Christmas Bears and Stockings
It’s almost Christmas and children of Marion County are hoping Santa will bring them either a
bear or a stocking. The Salvation Army provides the bears and the stockings; all we have to do
is dress the bears and fill the stockings. The Salvation Army of Marion County has about 1,000
children in need.
Jo Gearin has both items. If you wish to dress a bear or fill a stocking, please call her. You can
pick them up at her house, she can deliver them to your house or she will have them available
at Saturday Coffee.
The bears usually wear 0-3 months clothes, which most thrift shops have, and the stocking can
be filled with anything but food products, candy, gum, drinks, etc. Contact Jo at 352-861-8998.
Her address is 5490 SW 56th St.
Newsletter Stories
Our community is rich with human interest stories, as witnessed by the recent article on Frank
Ruck and discoveries about Bill Donovan’s connection to the elder George Bush and Judy Lott’s
authorship of children’s books. It made us wonder if there are other stories or life highlights out
there that we could report on. If so, contact anyone on the newsletter committee or Andrea
Primas, our human interest reporter.
SOC Board of Directors
On February 6, 2019, there will be an election to replace 2 retiring Board members, Marty
Guzowski and Jo Gearin. Consequently we need candidates to run for office. Nancy Savel has
volunteered to chair the committee. If you are interested, please contact Nancy (854-7877).
You must submit a resume which will be run in the SOC newsletter during December and
January. In addition there will be three question and answer sessions in January prior to the
election.
If you have information for Bits and Pieces, please email to [email protected] by the 10th of the month before
publication.

Vinegar has been around since medieval days. There are various types of
vinegar- distilled, apple cider, malt, balsamic, rice, wine and beer. Apple cider
vinegar is known for its medicinal purposes and distilled for its cleaning ability.
We are focusing on the cleaning benefits of the white distilled type today. White
vinegar is cheap, multi-purpose, and environmentally friendly. Here are just a few
of its household uses:
Window cleaner-1/2 white vinegar to ½ water.
Blinds-1 cup ammonia, ½ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup baking soda & 1 gallon warm
water.
Automatic coffeemaker-fill reservoir with vinegar and run cycle. Empty carafe and
run cycle with water.
Kills grass-sprinkle on effected area full strength.
Keeps cut flowers fresh-2 tablespoons white vinegar & 2 tablespoons sugar to 1
quart water. Cut stems. Change water every few days when water gets cloudy.
No-wax floors-1/2 cup vinegar to ½ gallon warm water. No need to rinse.
Soften paint brushes.
Cleans dishes and glassware.
Cleans microwave.
Boil a cracked egg.
