Greetings Neighbors, Luckily we escaped the wrath of Hurricane Dorian. It was the storm that would not end. As I write this, I’m in Maine and we even felt the effects of Dorian here, rain and some wind only. It was nothing like The Bahamas, The Carolinas and even Nova Scotia. Preparing for a storm is a nuisance, but certainly worth the time and effort. October is the month that sees many of our snowbird friends returning. It also often brings the end of the dreadful heat. Let’s get back into our busy routines and also welcome the many new residents that have joined our community during the past few months. Bring a new neighbor to the monthly meeting in October and/or a weekly Saturday morning coffee. Marty Guzowski Editor

In addition, you will need to read and review the state statutes that govern our type of association (Chapter 723). There are responsibilities that the Board undertakes in regard to celebrating specific holidays. We look for candidates that enjoy the community and the residents that live here. If you are interested, please submit your resume to Nominating Committee Chair, Kathleen Sirois, Ed Buckley, or Shirley Ashbaugh. These resumes need to be published in the December and January newsletters. The newsletter deadline is the 15th of the month. Page 5

Veteran’s Day Dinner

To honor veterans, there will be a dinner on Monday, November 11 @ 4:00, featuring ½ rotisserie chicken, baked potato, salad and dessert. There is no charge for veterans, but a $7.00 charge for all others.

Veteran’s Day Community Project 2019

Suzette Brown, Trina Vertefeuille, and Rita Cope are organizing a COMMUNITY project to make a few quilted throws for some of the SADDLE OAK veterans that have served our nation. We will hold several workshops DOWNSTAIRS in the club house to make these quilts. They will be presented on Veteran's Day, Nov 11, 2019. We have four WWII veterans in our park and we think that is awesome!!

We need a lot of help! There is something that everyone can do. You don't need to know how to sew or quilt.

The fabric (over 45 yards) has been cut and we are ready to sew, iron, and cut threads. There already have been several workshop days and there will be several more to come. Check your Facebook page for upcoming dates.

The HOA has approved the funding for this project and we thank them.

So snowbirds, when you get back, hook up with one of the project people and we will find something for you to do. You will be needed.

Nancy Dougherty and Rita Cope would like to have the names of all veterans that reside in this park. We want the branch of service you were in and the years you served. If we haven't gotten hold of you recently, then email your info to: [email protected] Thanks Suzette, Trina and Rita

Christmas Project for Veteran's Village

Gallon-sized “ditty bags” are made by some of the Saddle Oak Stitchers and filled by members of SOC for the veterans at the Veteran’s Village in Ocala. These bags are to be filled with snacks and small gifts and/or gift cards. They especially like the small snacks. A suggestion list is inside each bag. A Christmas card is enclosed in each bag for you to sign and any comment you wish to make. Ditty bags will be available Nov. 1, to fill for the 50 residents at the Veteran's Village. All bags need to be returned to Joann Barber by the first Saturday in December. Questions? Call Joann Barber at 352-304-8579.

Decorating Committee

Thanks to Donald McBath and Carol Palomba for volunteering to take care of decorating the clubhouse.

Operation Shoebox

OPERATION SHOE BOX is dedicated to supporting our troops by creating care packages which are shipped to war zones or anywhere service members request support. Their collection efforts average 1500 care packages a week! Personal soaps, shampoos and miscellaneous items collected from hotel stays, as well as writing paper, envelopes, pens, toothpaste, certain candies and food items, batteries, deodorant, sunscreen, etc., are delivered to the Operation Shoebox Center in Belleview three or four times a year. This is a year-round project. As you continue to travel and have access to hotels and vacation resorts, save all the personal goodies if you don’t use them.

If you would like to know what other items are collected for the troops, you can go to https://operationshoebox.com/how-youcan-help/care packages.

Items can be given to Joann Barber – 352-304-8579 – or Rosemary Carson – 352-304-8232.

Upcoming Holiday Events

Any ideas for holiday events? In the past we have had a cookie exchange, lighting up the community, an ugly sweater contest, a golf cart parade and caroling. Any other ideas? Any volunteers to plan holiday events. Christmas dinner will be catered and held at the clubhouse. How about New Year’s Eve? Contact a Board member if you have ideas or will chair an event.

Medical Supply Closet

Two assistants have joined chairman Bill Sirois (603-396-5212) in helping people borrow medical supplies from the upstairs closet. If you need to borrow a walker, cane, wheelchair, shower chair, etc., call Bill or Don LaPorte (352-867-0228) or Roxy Lyon (607-346-5936).

Cookbooks for Sale

New to the community? Enjoy our potlucks? Looking for a perfect holiday gift? Consider the wonderful community cookbook! $10 each. See Gloria Paige.
