COMMODORE’S REPORT

For a very long time our Committee has been ‘short-handed’ and while this situation remains, we are pleased to welcome Cameron Murray who has agreed to be co-opted to the role of Vice-Commodore. Cam has an introduction later in this issue of Tell Tales.

The Vice-Commodore is crucial to succession in the leadership of our Club. In the meantime, Cam brings knowledge and skills to our team that will help us to move forward.

Regretfully, we also had a resignation from the Committee when our Race Officer – Judy Lymbery – felt unable to continue in the role. The Race Committee will collectively provide oversight to the Racing programme until a permanent replacement can be appointed.

In last month’s issue of Tell Tales I announced the appointment of Manuela as our Club Manager, during the transition to this it was agreed that she would instead offer voluntary support to Sheila who will continue to be our Office Administrator.

The Committee plans to hold a Members Forum on Tuesday 7th November which is intended to provide a closer interaction with the Committee and provide our Members with an opportunity to ask questions. This Forum will be less formal than an AGM and if successful should become a more regular part of Club procedure.

With the arrival of November, we see the return of our Island Cruising friends and once again this year we will providing hospitality for the Island Cruising Association’s All Points Rally. This is an important event which now forms an integral part of our Seafarers Week.

Later in the month we will email you the detail of the Rally programme in which there are a number of seminars that may be of interest to you. As OCC Members, you will be welcomed to attend any of these.

We have a lot happening over the next few weeks so there should be something to interest everyone. I’ll look forward to seeing you at one or more of these.

RACING NEWS VICE COMMODORE

Hello Opua Cruising Club,

Most of you already know me as “Race Cam”, and recently I’ve been called “Stumpy” or “Hoppy”. For those of you who don’t know me, let me formally introduce myself as “Cameron Murray” you can pretty much call me anything, but just call me late for dinner!! A little bit about me, I’ve grown up in Hawaii and New Zealand with a long-time presence in Opua, spending time with my Grand Father building boats out of the Old Deeming’s Boat Yard. Since a young lad, I’ve progressed from beach cats to bowman during the Kenwood Cup Series in Hawaii during the mid to late 90’s, to Super Yacht Captain, to running a Solar Business out of my 60’ Bruce Roberts on the US East Coast, Bahamas, West Indies, and the Caribbean. In 2012, I packed it up and sailed back to Opua and set up shop with a real land based office, next to the new Opua Store.Since moving back, I have again been doing what I can in the background for the OCC. In recent weeks I’ve been asked to step up and join the Committee as the Vice Commodore, for the Club that we have all grown to love and support I said yes. I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into, so I hope that I can live up to your expectations. However, we all must remember that it is the Club Members that make a Club a good Club. Having a competent Committee, in my view, is to listen to the members and work together so that everyone’s opinions count. As I’ve been away for a while, hence the new nickname

of “Stumpy”. I encourage all of you to feel free to come to me for anything that is on your mind good or bad. Or just to have a chat about Yachting or anything else.If we have a happy Club and are working together, then we have a full bar and kitchen. And with a full bar and kitchen, then we can have the resources to achieve the goals and direction that we want to see in the Future.Cheers and I look forward to meeting and getting to know you betterKind Regards

Cameron Murray

We are well and truly into summer sailing! How exciting. We are over the moon on how the NYA (Northland Yachting Association) Regatta has taken off this past weekend. Yachting is still alive and well in the Bay of Islands. Thanks to all the hard work from our volunteers – you made it and showed how it’s done.

The OCC fleet needs to come together for the first Interclub Race (RBC vs OCC) on Sunday 26 November. The start is at Opua, more details to come.

RBC (Russell Boating Club) Nine Pin Bird Rock Race takes place on Sunday 12 November. Let’s give our neighbours some support and turn up with a decent fleet to this iconic race.

The Two-Sail Series has been postponed to later in the season due to lack of interest.

As Robbs Hielkema mentioned in his Youth Sailing Column, the more advanced junior sailors are looking for spots on keelboats to get a taste of racing. Please contact Robbs directly if you want to take one of these youngsters out. They are the future of our club!

Two of our older youth sailors have just taken part in the NZL Youth Trails in Auckland. Bex & Bella battled it out in their Laser Radial Class and gained a lot of experience. Go Girls; you rock how you represent OCC on a national stage.

Thanks to our starters and sponsors – here’s to a great season on the water

JUNIOR SAILING NYA - REGATTA - DAY ONE Hana & Robbs Hielkema

Fantastic day had by all on the first day of the NYA regatta in the Bay of Islands today - thanks to all the competitors who

completed 4 races in stunning sailing conditions. We’re looking forward to seeing you all out there again tomorrow.

We had 3 divisions Cruisers went around Brampton boy Kent passage as the light seabreeze established itself they had an upwind tussell to the black rocks. A lead change on the reech to Roberton, another lead change on the way home to the finish line. All the cruising boats raised their arms in celebration across the finish line.

The cat division was a battle between the photo: Vera Hausmann

Opua Monday sailing is coming your way. This Monday!!

The big change this summer is that we will only be able to do a few more Mondays!

The club has reassessed how we run sailing coaching, and it boils down to 2 issues.1 its expensive for the club to run2 we are not progressing the kids onto the keelboats fast enough.

So we have a new plan.

Over the next 5-6 weeks, I will be working with parents to up skill and teach you how to coach and keep the kids safe on the water. A couple of key parents will do their coaching certificates and be qualified to teach our awesome group of sailors.

Once this 5-6 week period is up, we will switch junior coaching days to Tuesday, and the parents will run this session.

I will then coach the more experienced kids on a keelboat during the Wednesday night races. After a couple of weeks, I will graduate these kids onto club keelboats and take on the next bunch of kids for training.

If you are keen to start Wednesday sailing straight away, please let me know, and I can help to place you on a keelboat.

SO SEE YOU ALL THIS MONDAY, STRAIGHT AFTER SCHOOL

(P.S. if you paid for sailing the last term $50 you will get a credit for this term)

masters on the tornado and the apprentices on the NACRA15 we had a good guess at the nacra 15 handicap number which resulted in some close corrected times, so a job well done to the handicapper!! There may have been a tiny rip in the tornado gennaker by the end of the last race.

The racing monohulls had a great tussell all day long. the start lines were tight and race two had two boats caught on the individual recall flag.

We had some close calls with a couple of boats trying to sneak in at the boat end and a show of great sportsman ship with a penalty turn completed. And there were some differences

in Top mark rule interperitations. Remember there is no mark room at the Top mark between boats on opposite tacks. So if your on port you have no rights to the mark. You must dip or complete your tack clear ahead of the starboard tack boat.

Thanks a million to everyone that volunteered there time to make this event happen. We look forward to the growth of the nya regatta with next years edition in Whangarei. The goal of the event is to encourage small keelboats trailer sailors and catamarans from all over northland to come together for fun competition.

HISTORY, CAN YOU HELP?

The Club has been contacted by former Bay of Islands residents with an interesting old print they are offering for sale, which has a very pertinent historical link with the Opua area and which features a Dory in the Loft of Deemings Boatyard. Whilst our correspondents are looking to sell the print, they would love to finish a little of the it’s history, and would like to think that the print would have a new home in the Opua vicinity - where it originated and that it might be appreciated by a local ... more so than being sold just anywhere. This early photographic print dates from 1930s and it was purchased from a member of the Deeming family in the Waikato – the previous owner remembers it in her father’s garage for many decades and she rescued it because of her Dad’s family association with the Deemings. It would be well known locally, but also confirmed from the FNDC archive that c1910, Scarl Deeming moved a cottage on to the boatyard site to be used as a boatbuilding shed and from the late 1920s the boatshed was operated by brothers Walter and Jack Deeming. The boat shed moved location on the site and was enlarged in the 1930s and from here many of the Bay of Island’s significant boats were built, with the yard’s reputation continuing when it was sold to Dick McIlvride in 1966 and operations

continued until 1997.The print bears a signature – possibly Andrew? Wright. The Wright family were descendants of Capt John Wright, and were land owners at Omata, running a general store there, having purchased the land from local Maori in 1831. It seems the Deeming family purchased 70 acres from Capt Wright’s estate, giving the print a historical context and perhaps explaining why an Andrew? Wright would have taken this striking picture of the lovely Dory in the neighbour’s boatshed Loft. The present owner’s haven’t been able to obtain family tree information to verify Andrew Wright’s definitive family connection. But they are

hoping that out of their contact with us, there might be locals who can confirm a connection? The picture’s details are - Photo Size: 945mm Long 445mm High. Labour Weekend Cruise

Labour weekend was ironically timed for the change in government!

On Galinette we headed off into the Bay on Friday night, watching the first TP52s come around Cape Brett, and we got a lovely show from some friendly dolphins. On Saturday night we met up in Pipi bay on Motorua Island for an early evening BBQ with the sun setting over the hill. We advanced further up the beach as the tide crept towards us. There was a great turn-out with upwards of ten people. Sausages were the most popular BBQ meat. The local stingray cruised along the water’s edge at sun down.

Sunday morning was calm in Pipi bay, and we attempted to go for a fish but had no luck!

We all ended up in Orokawa bay on Sunday night for a quiet evening. Many went home early on Monday morning as the weather packed in - plenty of wind for a sail home!
