KIERAN O’CUNEEN is a former Ambassador of the Commission of the European Union (EU), an inveterate traveller and an expert on Zulus and slavery. Kieran served for six years as the EU Ambassador in Suriname in South America, and in the Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Tobago, plus the six islands of the Netherlands Antilles, writing extensive political and economic reports in all these countries.

DR. JOHN WREGLESWORTH A historian who has taught and lectured at a variety of levels (school, college and university) for over 25 years. John has toured extensively around Europe and the Middle East, as well as further afi eld in the Americas, Asia and Australasia. He has a wide-ranging familiarity with different cultures, from Pre-Columbian cities of the Americas and Crusader castles in the Near East to Spanish fortresses in the Caribbean.

JOHANNA ANGERMYER AND DAVID FOX Johanna Angermeyer is the daughter of one of the fi rst European families to settle in the Galapagos in 1935. David Fox was a farmer before becoming a yacht engineer. After sailing around the world, he went to the Galapagos Islands where he met his wife Johanna.

HUGH BICHENO Hugh Bicheno was born in Cuba, of British parents. He joined SIS, then went freelance as a security consultant and kidnap negotiator. He now researches and writes about the politics and the cutting edge of confl ict.

KEITH BUCHANAN Keith Buchanan is an environmental consultant with more than 25 years experience of working on biodiversity and landscape issues in the UK and internationally.

BRIGADIER IAN GARDINER He fought in the Dhofar War in Oman from 1973 to 1975, where he was decorated with the Omani Distinguished Service Medal for Gallantry.

MICHAEL SCOTT OBE is a freelance writer, broadcaster and photographer. An expert on natural history and nature conservation, his books include ‘Scottish Wild Flowers’ and the ‘Young Oxford Book of Ecology’.

DR ANNE DAVISON has had a life-long interest in history and the religions of the world. For many years she was Adviser in Inter Religious Relations with the Church of England.

GHADA KARMI is a leading British-Palestinian physician, academic and writer. She is an experienced lecturer and public speaker, and has undertaken several lecture tours in the US and Australia. She is a frequent commentator on British radio and TV.

BRIGADIER MIKE SHAW was a regular soldier for over 30 years and a keen historian all his life. He has an interest in how trading links developed between Europe and the Orient from the earliest recorded history and how these expanded into the colonial empires of the 19th century. During the cruise he will be giving a series of lectures on this theme which will examine the development of maritime links across the Indian Ocean from the days of sail into the era of steam navigation.

He has worked on archaeological projects in most countries of the Near East and particularly in the countries of the Arabian Peninsula such as the UAE and the Yemen. Between 1990 and 2000 he taught at the Institute of Archaeology (London) and is currently a researcher with CNRS UMR 7041 (Paris).

ROBIN KEALY, after studying Classics at Oxford, served in the Diplomatic Service from 1967 to 2004. He qualifi ed in Arabic at the FCO School in Shemlan, Lebanon and spent most of his career in the Arab World. His early postings included Libya, Kuwait and Iraq. From 1997 to 2001 he was British Consul-General in Jerusalem (effectively Britain’s representative to the Palestinian Authority) and from 2002 to 2004 he was British Ambassador to Tunisia.

PROFESSOR CLIVE ARCHER is Emeritus Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research areas are in European integration with special reference to the Nordic area and small states, and the Arctic region. His research interests include the archaeology of the Roman Empire, with particular emphasis on trade, urbanism and culture change in the west Mediterranean basin and ploughzone archaeology.

PROFESSOR ALEXEI LEPORC was born in 1967 in Leningrad, USSR. From 1989-99 he was an Assistant Professor at St Petersburg Technical University, and from 2000-2005 taught at the European University of St Petersburg. Since 2002 Alexei has been Curator at the Department of Western European Art at the Hermitage, his special interests being Austrian Expressionism (especially O Kokoschta), contemporary architecture and garden history.

Now a freelance specialist tour guide and lecturer he travels for a living, particularly to regions of geological interest.

THE RT REVD GRAHAM JAMES read history at the University of Lancaster and completed his theological training at Oxford prior to his ordination in 1975. He was appointed Bishop of St Germans in his native Cornwall in 1993 and translated to Norwich in 1999.
