Alan Dale MARKS30/10/1924 – 30/10/2016

Alan was born and raised in Mt Gambier. From an early age he had a passion for motor vehicles and adventure. Years later when he married Shirley, she shared these passions. These included “Mud Plugging” as he called it, delivering caravans and motor homes all over Australia, a 4WD trek across the Simpson Desert and the Bay to Birdwood in their beloved Austin 7. Alan once confided in me that Shirley was always the better driver. He was a PMG postman for almost 50 years and delivered mail in Mt Gambier and after the war, Glenelg. He joined the RAAF during WW2 and trained as a high speed Morse code operator. His original posting was to India but when he reached Darwin, these orders changed and he was posted to a small town South of Darwin where he set up a high speed Morse code Station for the duration of the war. He was until a few years ago, President of a PMG telegraphy group and was one of the few surviving members of this unique craft. A life member and Social Secretary for many years of the Sporting Car Club of SA, he also found time to commentate at Rowley Park and other motor sporting events. He was a proud owner of a Mini Cooper S which he often drove in the annual Climb to the Eagle. His many talents also encompassed Penny Farthings and hosting a motor sport segment on the original Channel 7 Wide World of Sport, Channel 9 and a radio segment on the ABC. A past member of SSL he flew large scale gliders and powered models. He was also passionate about hovercraft and did not rest until he obtained a fully operational 10th scale Griffon 2000TDX. It was his pride and joy. His exceptional skill with a microphone placed him in demand, not only for Rowley Park, but events such as the Golden Era Races at Constellation and Jet Action at Monarto. He was a keen supporter of indoor flying at ETSA Park and for many years wrote a column for the MASA Newsletter under “Nite Al” and later as “The Phoenix” for the Model Flight website. His favourite indoor model was the Ikarus Bleriot from about 10 years ago. Alan is survived by his younger brother Dale.

“PROPELLERS....THERE IS NO WARNING, JUST PAIN”

MY GYPSY MOTH There are two major variant of the Gypsy Moth. The earlier G model had a timber framed body and the later models

had a metal framed body and were known as DH60M.In Nov 2015 the Constellation ran a De Havilland day as they have done for a number of years before and again in

2016. Earlier in the year on speaking with Collin Reedman I heard that Graham Simpson was selling his collection of home built models. I remembered seeing Grahams Gypsy Moth at the Port Adelaide Aircraft Museum. The SARCH Club had for a few years been putting on a static display of helicopters which was always well received by the public and some years other clubs were asked to put on a static aircraft display as well. ON one of those occasions Graham was present with his ¼ scale Gypsy Moth. On that occasion I asked Graham about the history of the model and its full size counterpart. He had copied the aircraft that had been owned and displayed by Joe Drage at his Wadonga museum and later at Air World in Wangaratta. Graham had travelled to Wangaratta about 1980 to photograph the plane and took a

lot of photos of VH-ULM and another airframe without covering. VH-ULM is a DH60M.

Graham had finished building the model in 1985 and competed in the Shepparton large model competition and won the event.

I realised that the full size aircraft was in fact the same aircraft that I had seen flying over Bendigo when I was a teenager (yes it is hard to believe that I was a teenager) I knew the owner firstly as an acquaintance of my father and then as the owner of the local Yamaha motorcycle dealership and service centre. His name was Les Penna and at one time he told me that the Gypsy Moth had been sold to Joe Drage. Les had therefore been the last of a long line of owners of the Gypsy prior to Joe. While Joe owned it, the aircraft was finally grounded due to it no longer being airworthy. When the Wangaratta collection

was sold off around 2002, the Gypsy went to Queensland and I believe it has had the one owner since. In 2012 a total rest Michael Redmond. When I told Graham the story as I knew it he was surprised and pleased as he had not known much about its history. Another CMFC Member, Kevin Bartlett can also tell a story of knowing Les as he had flown as a passenger in one of Les’ Tiger Moths in the early 1970s which came about as he knew and still knows Les’ son Greg who he had met during their air-force days.

So it came about that I acquired the model Gipsy Moth model in Nov 2015. How could I possibly pass up this opportunity? Unfortunately Graham had to sell the Gypsy and other models due to health issues. The Gypsy is already giving me much pleasure even though it was not quite flyable when I received it. I have been slack and now almost one year later I have it almost ready to fly again. I hope to fly it at the Noarlunga Scale Day in November. (2016 that is).

The model had an Enya 120R FS fitted which was very tired as I suspect it had probably done a lot of fling over the years. I am restoring the motor and will put it back in. In the mean time I acquired another Enya 120R which I will use for now. I may restore the Gypsy at some time, but I am reluctant to do so as it carries a lot of history with it and besides, it looks like an old aeroplane which the full size was when Graham modelled it.

I have included two photos. The first photo is of Joe Drage at the controls at Berwick, Victoria in February 1975. Joe had been given a special permit to fly the Gypsy to the Airshow for the 50th Anniversary of the DH60 Moth. The second photo is of the Graham’s model about the time it was completed, on display at Constellation.

The following is an extract from a Tasmanian newspaper report from 2012, followed by the Civil Aviation register for the full size aircraft. The history is quite interesting and it somewhat surprises me that the Gypsy actually survives today. What also is of interest to me is that the record shows that the aircraft was sold to Joe Drage in 1977, but he was already flying it in 1975 and I believed that Les transferred it to the Museum in 1972. Either there is a typo or Les retained ownership while it was on display until 1977.

-Historic Moth flies again.ALISON ANDREWSNov. 13, 2012.NOVEMBER 23, 1930 was a day like no one had seen in Northern Tasmania before. It was the day that Australian Aero Club Tasmanian section’s tiny de Havilland DH.60M Moth VH-ULM _ better known

as a Gipsy Moth _ made the first flight from the new aerodrome at Western Junction, near Evandale. The next day, The Examiner reported that a large crowd gathered at the “drome’’ in the afternoon to witness history

in the making.

An exhibition of stunting by Captain Francis was ``highly spectacular’’.

But Captain W. Martin was the first of the aero club members to take the Gipsy Moth up solo.

Long-serving Tasmanian Aero Club member and Hillwood pilot Lindsay Millar will be one of a handful of people quietly commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the first flight that launched full-time commercial aviation in Tasmania on Friday week.

Mr Millar will be more excited than most since he found out that the little Gipsy Moth that made the historic flight is back in the air again after 25 years grounded.

He realised that the historic plane existed again in all its glory when he was contacted by Queensland librarian and plane enthusiast

Graham Potts checking on the Gipsy Moth’s history. He has been part of the team who rebuilt the iconic aircraft for Brisbane surgeon and plane enthusiast Michael

Redmond after he bought it from a grounded historic collection at Wangaratta in the early 2000s.``It was wonderful to find out that it was actually back in flying condition,’’ Mr Millar said.Mr Potts has discovered that the plane was built in England by the de Havilland Aircraft Company in 1929 and was one

of the first of the latest model of increasingly popular Gipsy Moth biplanes produced by the company. It was registered VH-ULM to the Department of Defence Civil Aviation branch in Melbourne and leased on a peppercorn

rent with its sister Moth VH-ULN to the newly formed aero club at Western Junction, in Northern Tasmania. It was flown extensively by the club for the next decade suffering no less than 11 minor accidents between June 1932

and October 1934.Ownership passed to the Royal Victorian Aero Club at the end of 1944.After a succession of private owners following World War II the little Gipsy Moth joined Joe Drage collection of historic

planes at Wodonga in 1972.The collection was relocated to Wangaratta where it was broken up and sold in 2002.Work to restore the Tasmanian Aero Club’s former plane started in earnest in 2009 and it took to the air again for the

first time in 25 years in May, this year. (2012).

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY. The 70th MAAA National Model Aircraft Championships to be held in West Wyalong NSW, between the 23rd and the 30th of April 2018, will be a truly centralised and combined event with all venues within 15 minutes of each other and the town centre. In this the 80th year since the Þrst Nationals, it is hoped that this event will ÒrebootÓ the NATS as a premier event and provide an enjoyable REUNION for those who have attended previous Nats and an exciting INTRODUCTION for those who have never been to a Nats. With a very supportive Shire Council, a long lead time and liaison with NSIGs, all venues will be to a high standard and should ensure high entry numbers, great competition and camaraderie.

1.2! BRIEF DETAILS

The dates for the 70th MAAA Nationals are the (23rd to the 30th of April 2018. These dates have been chosen to not only promote aermodelling within central NSW because of generally good weather during this period but to also incorporate school holidays for a family friendly Nationals. ! With an eye to furthering the aims of the MAAA Strategic Plan and our recent national recognition as a Sport, promotion and camaraderie is extremely important. ! The fact that all disciplines can be accommodated within 15 minutes of each other will allow for increased cross discipline participation and the probability of vastly improved numbers of spectators. ! The Airport facility which is so close to town, will be able to host 3 simultaneous RC events as well as the CL hardstand events, giving an unprecedented opportunity to showcase Aeromodelling in general and National Competition in particular. This facility including the ÒTerminal BuildingÓ has been made available by the owner, the Bland Shire Council.! The proposal is for a truly Combined Nationals, as they Òused to beÓ, with all events in close proximity, all with Þrst class facilities in a friendly and supportive country town.

2.0 INTRODUCTION

The idea of a truly combined Nationals was germinated almost 3 years ago and with the encouragement and assistance of the Bland Shire Council, CLAS, SAMʼs, the WWMAC and our own members it is becoming a reality.! Taking encouragement from the recent successful Qld Nats, although unfortunately conducted without the Free Flight events, and the relatively successful 69th decentralised Nats, we believe that the Nats as a premier event is still viable. ! The fact that the Nats has not been the pinnacle of our sport in recent years is largely due to the inability of host states to secure Þrst class venues for almost 100 events. The logistics of providing 4 or 5 RC Þelds, Free Flight Indoor and Outdoor, plus Control Line Hardstand and Grass circles has led to inferior venues and a rejection by the various NSIGʼs, who themselves have better individual venues. ! The fact that West Wyalong can offer all events in every discipline Þrst class venues, is a breakthrough, and should ÒrebootÓ the Nats. West Wyalong is an excellent host town, with all disciplines being able to be provided with Þrst class venues all within15 minutes travel time of the town centre.

WEST WYALONG INDOOR STADIUM (INDOOR 5)

It is proposed that this double indoor basketball court facility (currently under renovation), be used as the ÒHUBÓ of the 70th Nats. Being located right in town, makes it ideal as a central meeting point. It will provide a focus for REGISTRATION of all competitors, be used for all PROCESSING, INDOOR FLYING events including student Hangar Rat (unofÞcial event), and the SWAP MEET / BRING AND BUY/ AUCTION.It will also allow spectators to receive an INFO pack containing a complete event schedule with directions to all venues, and an opportunity to see Scale models from all disciplines on static display, as well as the Indoor Flying events.

3.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE NSW NATIONALS 2018

The objectives of the organizing committee for the 2018 Nationals are:

1. To provide suitable venues for the highest standard of competition possible.2. To provide venues for fellowship and camaraderie for modellers from all over! Australia, within 15 minutes of a variety of accommodation and facilities. 3.! To provide an opportunity for competitors and the general public to see every facet ! of aeromodelling in close proximity to a host town. 4. To establish a National Champion in each event for the year 2018.5. To provide a means of Team selection for International Events when requested by! any Special Interest Group.6. To provide a means to showcase aeromodelling to the local community and the

nation, in this the 80th year of Nationals.7. To directly involve local school students by the inclusion of a demonstration event.

4.0 CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE 2018 NATIONALS.

4.1 ORGANIZING COMMITTEE.

A 70th Nationals Committee has been formulated and members are being recruited to perform speciÞc tasks in their areas of expertise. At this early juncture, we have enough volunteers to Þll all roles as identiÞed below. Those positions already identiÞed are:

a) Chairman and MAAA Liaison OfÞcer.b) Secretary:c) Treasurer:d) Registrar: e) Administrators for each discipline CL- FF-. SAMʼs- RC- f)Public Relations OfÞcer g) CASA and WW Airport liaison.h) West Wyalong MAC liaisoni) Merchandise and promotional event design-

4.2 2018 NATIONALS EVENT COMPETITION RULES.

All events run at the 2018 Nats will be conducted in accordance with the FAI Sporting Code and Australian Rules Book. There is no intention to modify or alter in anyway the current rules associated with these events especially those that are part of Team Selections. It is the intention that the events scheduling is presented and published for viewing on the MAAA Website by the end of August 2017.

4.3 2018 NATIONALS EVENT SOCIAL OCCASIONS, TROPHIES and MERCHANDISE.

The following aspects of the 2018 Nationals will be prepared and details presented to MAAA to demonstrate general compliance with the MAAA Nationals Guide 2013, speciÞcally:- Contestants Folders;- Souvenirs and Merchandise; - Nationals BrieÞng to all contestants; ! !- Trophies and Merchandise;- Spectator Info Packs.

4.4 2018 NATIONALS EVENT - FINANCIAL ISSUES.

It is the intention of the NSWFFS to open a speciÞc Ò70th NatsÓ bank account and this will separate any Nationals transactions from the Societyʼs general account. Once this is in place and the signatories are conÞrmed a request will be made to the MAAA for the release of the Nationals assistance money. NSWFFS Public OfÞcer -Gary Pope has prepared a budget spreadsheet which will allow costs to be assessed in an iterative process throughout the entire preparation and running of the Nationals. This document will be presented at the 2017 Council Conference.

Sponsorship will be sought from various Trade and Hobby providers as well as Clubs and local businesses, however the overall budget is not heavily reliant on such sponsorship. The recent Qld Nationals has provided invaluable guidance as to current costs and income and it is anticipated that the 70th NSW Nationals will have a similar Þnancial proÞle.

4.5 2018 NATIONALS EVENT - OTHER SOCIAL and PROMOTIONAL EVENTS.

Several other ideas to promote Aeromodelling and involve the local community have been suggested during the competition period. Those that have been deemed as being appropriate are :* Swap Meet/ Bring and Buy/ Auction, with Trade Stands and Indoor 3D Demonstration.* BBQ and Night Scramble.* Student Hangar Rat (unofÞcial event)* FPV Drone Racing (demonstration event) STC* Presentation Dinner.

4.6 2018 NATIONALS EVENT - RISK ASSESSMENT.All necessary venues for the 2018 Nats have been pre booked, ( see attached conÞrmation from the Bland Shire Council and NSWFFS). Once events for each venue have been conÞrmed a RA will be prepared for each site. These will take into account event speciÞc requirements and prevailing circumstances at each site. This will form part of the ongoing communication with MAAA and the NSIGʼs to ensure a safe and successful event.

6.0 CLOSING

! The opportunity exists for a successful, memorable and enjoyable 70th MAAA Nationals in West Wyalong in 2018. ! We believe this is a Þtting site for the celebration of 80 years of MAAA Nationals, and probably the only available site in Australia capable of hosting a fully combined MAAA National Model Aircraft Championships.! The available venues provide a sound basis for a ÒreunionÓ of all those members who have been to previous Nats and all those who have always wanted to attend a Nats.In addition the opportunity exists to demonstrate some increasingly popular, cutting edge events such as FPV Drone racing, and introduce a new generation to the Nats. ! The Local Shire Council of Bland are extremely supportive of this event as is the small but enthusiastic WW MAC. ! The town is well situated, centrally, on the Newell Highway and although it boasts an array of services and facilities, it is small enough for an event of this nature to have a signiÞcant impact, with various media coverage almost guaranteed.! This will be the Þrst time in many decades that all events are within a 15 minute radius of a town centre and that two or three disciplines will be able to ßy on the same Þeld.

Signed

CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB INCDE HAVILLAND and R.F.D.S. DAY

By Don Howie

A total of 70 R.F.D.S. Badges at $5.00 each were sold on this excellent flying day, between Constellation and Skyhawks members.

The highlight was the fly-in of the full size D.H.Chipmunk from the Gawler Airfield owned and flown by Marcus Michell. Marcus as a teenager was a member of Constellation in the mid 1970’s and was taught to fly R/C aircraft by the writer. The visit on the day was organised by Colin Reedman.

The low-wing De Havilland Chipmunk Tandem Trainer was designed by Polish designer Wsiewolod J, Jakimiuk, who had designed the PLZ Fighter aircraft in the 1930’s in Poland. When Hitler ( the Germans) invaded Poland in September 1939, he managed to leave the Country and found and found his way to Canada, where he became part of De Havilland in Canada.

About 1943, Jaki as he was known (first 4 letters of his surname) began thinking of a new Trainer design to be produced after the war ended. Late 1945, the design was finished and the new aircraft was first flown on 22nd of May 1946. In Canada, 218 Chipmunks aircraft were produced and all Canadian aircraft designs by De Havilland were names after animals. In England and Europe, a total of 1080 Chipmunks were made and eventually became the trainer for many Aero Clubs through out the world, as it became the replacement of the Tiger Moth that used the same inverted 4 cylinder Gipsy Major engine, with slightly more power. Thus the day at Constellation was the 70th Anniversary of the famous aircraft.

Two 72 inch span “Chipmunk” models were flown on the day and both were built from the Dennis Bryant (UK) plan and wood kit. First shown is Murray Lewis ( Constellation) with the model, powered with a Thunder Tiger Pro 46 glo and the model is covered with Hobby King yellow iron-on film.

The second model at1/6th scale is Peter Lyas from Skyhawks with his model powered with an ASP 90 four stroke glo. This aircraft won the D.H. Chipmunk Model of the day Trophy, presented to him by Marcus Michell, at the end of the day.

Another De Havilland aircraft was the 1/8th scale (73 inch span) twin

engine electric Mosquito built by Peter Puleston, who came out from the UK in the 1970’s and joined Constellation Club at this time. This model won the Trophy on the day as for the Best Civilian or Military Mono Plane by De Havilland.

The next group of aircraft is the popular Tiger Moth biplane, still very popular to fly in the full size aircraft, as it is open cockpit flying from the old days. Mike Savill flew the Hanger 9 Tiger Moth at ¼ scale owned by Les Furnell from Constellation.

A recently rebuilt 72

inch span Tiger Moth, constructed many years ago from a Precedent kit by the late John Bates was the model at 1/5th scale by Constellation Secretary, Larry Scott. Larry recovered the wings, airframe etc with Seconite full size covering and the finish is automotive silver and red.

This model along with the two scratch built ¼ scale Tigers is shown in the photo with Terry Cosh (centre) and Steve Barker (right) with his red trimmed model that I have featured previously. Steve from Constellation won

the Best Civilian and Military Bi-plane trophy on the day.Last photo is Marcus Michell in front of his full size

Chipmunk before hand starting and returning to Gawler with his wife in the aircraft, doing some great low flying and aerobatics before landing and after take off in the afternoon. Many thanks to Rod Spurrier, who made a great hamburger

HOLDFAST MODEL AERO CLUB

DOUBLE MAIDEN

At last, the weather gods smiled favourably. Conditions were good to conduct a test flight on both my latest build projects, a Fokker DVII and a Mini Contender.

Maiden number 1, the DVIIAll checks completed, fuelled up and motor started. I co-opted club

member Russell O’Brien to be my wingman to help out with trim changes if needed. Taxying out onto the field I tried a few left and right turns to see how she handled on the ground – good response. Lined her up into what little wind there was and slowly opened the throttle. Tracking nicely she picked up speed and gently lifted off. So far so good. Then the drama started. As the airspeed increased the plane decided to go vertical. Unbelievable, it was prop-hanging; with a 25 glow motor! Easing off the throttle I had a few anxious moments as she gyrated through

the sky. Eventually I recovered control and managed to land it safely. Phew, that was scary. For a while I thought it was a goner, but no, she wanted to live to fly another day. Russell wasn’t needed to help with trim changes; he also thought it was a goner and couldn’t believe it came down in one piece.

Upon checking the model the cause was identified as too little decalage on the top wing. The plan I used showed a negative 1.5 degrees which I duly set using my incidence meter. However, I must have inadvertently decreased the angle when tightening the strut and cabane connectors.

Back to the workshop/hangar for remediation.

Maiden number 2, the Mini ContenderFreshly charged battery installed, checks completed, ready to go.

I did my usual taxying turns to check ground handling – no problems. Lined her up into a gentle breeze, gradually increased power and she was away. Climbing to height and throttling back she flew incredibly well. I was more than pleased; I was amazed at how well she flew, as if she

was on rails. The only trim change I needed was three clicks of right rudder. Time for a stall check, very benign, she just mushed down slowly without dropping a wing. Some basic aerobatics, a loop and a roll, she handled them well. I was starting to enjoy myself. Time for landing, set up a nice descent profile and she settled down without bouncing.

Checking her over there were no loose bits, everything secure so I followed up with two more flights. Club member Bob McEwin was right when he said I’d enjoy flying it. She’s indeed a delight!

DVII’s turn again The decalage was reset to where it should be and it was time to resume the flight testing. Club member Pete

Robertson was at hand so I co-opted him as my wingman to help with any trim changes. This time the DVII took off nicely and as apprehensive as I was it didn’t repeat its previous ungainly performance. A few clicks of down trim on the elevator, followed by a few circuits. Time to bring her down; she came in for a nice landing. After manually adjusting the elevator linkage she was ready for a follow-up flight. This time a few clicks of right aileron and she was able to fly hands off; a far cry from the original test flight. Another nice landing and I was happy with the outcome – at last!

Now she’s ready for combat. She’ll be my back-up “here’s one I prepared earlier” model for when/if my main combat DVII gets shot down again.

Maiden flights are so much fun. You never know what is going to happen. Most times it’s straightforward but now and again your reflexes are really put to the test.

SCALE AIRCRAFT SOCIETY OF SA

FLY SCALE WITH US

Scale Aircraft Society of South AustraliaVisit to Constellation Model Flying Club field onSunday the 23rd of October 2016

The Constellation Club in partnership with Skyhawks, and Concorde clubs conducted a fly-in fund raising event for the benefit of the Royal Flying Doctor Service on this date. Additionally, the fixture was combined with the annual

De Havilland day, a Scale Society event originally scheduled for the 2nd of October, which unfortunately was called off due to atrocious weather. Members of the Scale Aircraft Society were there in good numbers, as were other members from Skyhawks, Concorde, Holdfast, South Coast, and Constellation clubs who participated in the flying event.

This day was ideal for flying our models with generally mild weather, except for one really strong blast of wind for a short time just before lunch. Four pilots flew their jet turbine powered models, which were no slouches getting around the field and were well displayed for the spectators. All other models were propeller driven, and included a diverse range of type and size. Quite a few sport and aerobatic models were well demonstrated by their pilots, and looked very impressive.

Models included a Fokker D7, Bücker Bü131 Jüngmann, Howard “Pete”, Ultimate Biplane, SE5a, Antoinette, ¼ scale P47D Razorback Thunderbolt, 1/8 scale P47D Razorback Thunderbolt, Fairchild PT 19, Cessna L-19 Bird Dog, Sbach 342. There was a Hawker Hurricane, Embraer EMB 312 Tucano, Cirrus, Piper Cub, Junkers Ju 87 “Stuka”, Hawker Sea Fury, and a Piper Pawnee.

As the event indicated, there was a good selection of De Havilland aircraft which showed their stuff – and a sight for sore eyes as well.

The De Havilland types there included: four DH 82 Tiger Moths of various scales, DHC-1 Chipmunk (RCAF), DHC-1 Chipmunk(2 FTS in UK), DH-2 (Airco), DH 98 Mosquito, DH 100 Vampire, and two DHC-2 Beavers.

Awards were presented for member’s De Havilland models judged within 3 categories which were:• For the best Monoplane Civil or Military: Awarded to Peter Puleston for his DH 98 Mosquito fighter Mk 6, 73” span, • For the best Biplane Civil or Military: Awarded to Steve Barker for his quarter scale DH 82 Tiger Moth – 88” span.• For the best DHC-1 Chipmunk: Awarded to Peter Lyas for his 1/6 scale model – 69” span. The year 2016 celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the first DHC-1 Chipmunk, and we are very appreciative that Marc

Michell flew in with his 12 inch per foot scale DHC-1 Chipmunk T.10 VH-RTW (WG424). This was built in the UK in 1952, and has British Army and camouflage markings. The aeroplane is based at Gawler, and created much interest among those who attended.

Lunch was catered for by members and wives of CMFC which was excellent as usual, and appreciated by all. Thank you.

Last but not least, the hospitality of CMFC and their well prepared field made the day very enjoyable.

ADELAIDE AEROMODELLERS CLUB

AAC 2016 Worldwide Ringmaster Flyathon October 8th 2016

The dates for the World Wide Ringmaster Flyathon this year were October 1st and 2nd. Originally an event was organised for these dates by Ned Kelly at the South Hummocks Model Aero Club in South Australia’s mid north approx.100km

from Adelaide. Unfortunately strong winds in the wake of recent storms forced it’s cancellation. All was not lost as Flyathon organiser in the USA, John Cralley, kindly granted would be SA participants until the end of

the following weekend to log flights. Adelaide Aeromodellers Club scheduled Saturday October 8th as Ringmaster Flyathon ‘make up’ day and for the first time in months the weather was not only kind, but perfect; warm and sunny with light winds.

4 pilots posted flights as detailed below. The Ringmaster flights took place amidst other CL sport flying. Other popular profile models flown on the day were Peacemaker, Flite Streak, Junior Flite Streak, SIG Twister and Proton sheet wing stunt model

Jeff Prosser’s Ringmaster flew the F2B pattern with ease thanks to it’s light weight and reliable power plant. Peter Anglberger started slowly having to coax a good setting out of his recently re-bored 1957 Burford Glo Chief 29 Mk1. In the final flights his Ringmaster and motor were ‘sorted’ allowing Square 8s and Triangles to be performed with ease.

Ned Kelly’s model also performed well. It really improved when he switched from a Master Airscrew paint stirrer to an APC 9 x 4 prop. Ned’s model lost weight as the day went on as he unfortunately found out that White Knight rattle can paint is not fuel proof. He is in the process of building a new Ringmaster with a more durable finish. Jon Witzke has also now sorted his Fox 35 powered Ringmaster. There was no hint of the dreaded Fox burp so I assume he has partially blocked the transfer passage as recommended by US experts.

Mick Laundy flew at home on Kangaroo Island. He has his own private CL circle and updated his tally throughout the day by SMS. He advised it was quite breezy on the Island, but still managed 4 flights without incident.

Place Entrant Flights Model Details Motor Details 1 Jeff Prosser 9 Ringmaster S1 scratch built from Brodak Plan OS FP252 Peter Anglberger 9 Ringmaster S1 scratch built from Brodak Plan Glo Chief 29 Mk1 3 Ned Kelly 6 Ringmaster S1 built from Brodak Kit OS FP254 Jon Witzke 5 Ringmaster S1 built from short kit Fox 35 Stunt Hemi5 Mick Laundy 4 Ringmaster S1 built from Brodak Kit Magnum 25 Total 33

For those considering joining in the fun and building a Ringmaster for next year’s event here are some recommendations:

1. Select wood carefully and finish sparingly to ensure a light model. Aim for less than 30 oz / 850 grams.2. Extend the bearers to past the high point of the wing and extend the doublers back to at least ½ way along the wing

chord. Do not use 1/8th ply. Use 1/16th spruce ply or even better 1/32nd spruce ply.3. Fit the pushrod to inner hole on a Brodak 3” bellcrank and use at least 25 mm throw on the elevator horn to gear down

the controls and limit elevator throw to +/- 25 degrees max, otherwise the model will be difficult to fly smoothly. The stock bellcrank mount and surrounding structure are not that strong so I suggest thicker ribs that are covered by the sheeting and double the length of the bellcrank mounting plate.

4. Fit a pushrod guide halfway between wing TE and elevator LE to prevent flexing.5. Ensure you use a uniflow tank. Mount it using slotted brackets so you can raise the centreline of the tank up to 6 mm

above the motor centre line. Most profiles with side mounted motors need the tank raised 3 to 6 mm above the motor CL

It has probably not escaped MASA members notice that this spring has probably been the worstweather wise in many years. Consequently CL activity has unfortunately been minimal in October.

The World Wide Ringmaster Flyathon scheduled for the October LWE at SHMAC was cancelled tomany CL’ers disappointment due to terrible weather. The US organizer kindly allowed SA flyers an extension of 1 week and the weather on SaturdayOctober the 8th was perfect! 5 Ringmasters took to the air multiple times at Unley Rdplus Mick Laundy on Kangaroo Island added 4 flights to the final tally of 33. An article on the eventhas been submitted to the MASA newsletter editor.

Unfortunately the weather on following weekends continued to be poor. AAC twice postponed theirHandicap F2B Aerobatics event, hopefully this will take place in early November. The Come and Try Delta Dart Indoor Rubber Power Free Flight at Ingle Farm Rec Centre onNovember 12th event fortunately is not weather dependent. There is still time for anyone interestedin participating to obtain kits form Peter Anglberger. See the MASA website for details.

AAC has scheduled a ‘Club Combat’ event for November 19th with simplified rules and a speed limitso the club hopes to encourage more CL’ers to try combatAAC will also take part in the NMAS Military and Scale day, performing CL display flights during thelunch break.
