Hoagy!November 26 at 3:30pm

Hoagy Carmichael was born on November 22, so we like to honor his Hoosier legacy around this time each year. On the Thanksgiving Day edition of Just You and Me, we’ll re-air Hoagy!, the one-hour documentary by former WFIU Hometown host Tom Roznowski, featuring interviews with David Baker, Carmichael biographer Richard Sudhalter, and Marian McPartland, as well as Hoagy’s music. After the special, you can hear a rare broadcast of Hoagy’s “Brown County in Autumn” performed in 1950 by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in New York City.

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925)Friday, November 13 at 7pmIU CinemaFree, but ticketed

Based on the bestselling novel of the 1800s by Indiana Civil War General Lew Wallace, this epic silent film recounts the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a fictional Jewish prince, who is enslaved by the Romans and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah’s narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus. This 1925 film adaptation is more faithful to Lew Wallace’s work than the 1959 film, and reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion. Ben-Hur is the most expensive film of the silent era and extras in the film include such stars as John Barrymore, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Joan Crawford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Mary Pickford. Live piano accompaniment provided by Rodney Sauer.

Find us on:

Discover the many facets of Indiana native Lew Wallace—bestselling novelist, general, governor, and commissioner in the Lincoln assassination trial—in this new WTIU documentary.

Lew Wallace (1827-1905) played a leading role in America’s military, political, diplomatic, and literary affairs during the 19th century. He was passionate about books and combat and dreamed of fame on the battlefield. He was the youngest major general in the Union Army and had success fighting Confederate forces at Forts Henry and Donelson. But at the Battle of Shiloh he found himself in a controversy that haunted him for the rest of his life.

Wallace’s lasting fame ultimately came from writing Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, one of the most successful books of all time. The story was adapted successfully for the stage, and for the screen in 1925 and 1959.

Beyond his role as author and a soldier, Wallace was also a lawyer, serving on the commissions that tried two of the most infamous acts of the Civil War; governor of the New Mexico territory where he interacted with the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid; and minister to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople where he befriended the Sultan. With the success of Ben-Hur, Wallace settled in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he constructed his dream study, a place he called “a pleasure-house for my soul.”

Join us for this unforgettable portrait of one of the most remarkable Hoosiers in Indiana’s history.
