Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Canadian GeeseSo here we are travelling through upstate New York on route from Toronto. We're

meandering our way back through the New England countryside to spend a couple of days in Boston before flying home. We had hoped to catch the Fall colors, and as we're driving the leaves are a blaze of colour... And Skip is singing his monthly refrain — “I need your c-o-l-u-m-n.” What part doesn’t he understand? I am on holiday, and just because I am retired, it doesn’t mean that holidays aren’t sacred. Of course, complaining only gets me stern looks over the top of the Editor in Chief’s glasses because, of course, he is putting together the entire Circuit on his holiday — and he is not retired. Still, it is rather cruel and unusual punishment to make an old retired person (that would be me) work so hard.

Right now we are in the middle of the Adarondak Mountains in Lake Placid — relaxing. Well, some people (who are waiting for others to give them work) are relaxing while others are doing the aforementioned work.

The air is crisp with the start of a fall chill, and the colours are absolutely fabulous with just the most beautiful oranges, golds and reds all framed with a background of a gorgeous autumn sky.

With the change of season comes a very busy Grand Prix Region calendar. We have already done our fall Day Away from Work and had a wonderful time on October 8th at Streets of Willow with our DE and Zone 8 autocross. We are now getting ready for two more driving events in November to end the 2012 track season. We are doing a Test and Tune day for PCA Club Racers and a DE on November 2nd at Buttonwillow Raceway, and then two weeks later we will be putting on a 2 day event at the Fairplex with our friends from the San Gabriel Valley Region. We will be offering a track day for PCA instructors on Saturday November 17th at the ridiculously low price of $75.00, and on the Sunday we are have a DE and Time Trial. Of course, drivers of all skill levels are

welcome, and we also welcome non-Porrsches are.

We are also stepping up our plans for the GPX annual holiday party. This year we have invited some very special guests who will be joining us. Let me just say that the man who is the President of the Porsche Club of America and its 100,000 members, Manny Alban, will be one of our very special guests. Along with Manny we are very excited that two other PCA Executive Council members, Caren Cooper and Tom Gorsuch, have also accepted our invitation along with a good friend to all of the PCA regions, Vu Nguyen, the PCA Executive Director.

As much as I would like to think that all of the PCA executive are flying in especially for our Holiday Party, they are not. They are coming to Southern California for the 2nd Annual Western US Tech Tactics and the Porsche exhibit at the L.A. Auto Show. If you have no idea what Tech Tactics is, and if you like talking about Porsches, and you like interesting things technical, then this is something you don’t want to miss. Porsche and the Porsche Club of America have been putting on Tech Tactics for decades on the east coast and finally made it out West last year. This is a series of 1-hour presentations by some of the leading experts in various things Porsche. The presentations are given both Saturday and Sunday, December 1 & 2, so either one of those days will give you the complete package. Space is limited, and we expect it to sell out early, so please see the advertisement in this Circuit. Let me know if you have questions. Registration should be opening soon.

Finally, our ballot for the 2013 Board of Directors is also in this Circuit. The current board all have agreed to stand for office for another year. The ballot will include a place for write in nominations.

As always if you have ideas, comments, concerns, questions or anything else – please contact me at [email protected] or just pick up the phone and give me a call anytime – after all I am retired – (619) 992.4287.

Sleazy Dog Construction

On the Cover...Nick Perdikaris took this great photo at the Monterey Historics last August. I'm a sucker for a 917, and this is as close as I got to the Monterey Peninsula this year.

November 2012

Suesan and I have been traveling most of October, so I put this issue of The Circuit together on a laptop. I thought I had my Circuit programs installed and ready to go, but, unfortunately, a few days into the trip I figured out that several of the programs had problems. Oops. It took a couple of days to get most of them working (and more than a couple of hours doing live chat or waiting in long phone cues).

Once I got down to work I realized that working on a laptop screen was going to be a lot different than having the two big monitors at my desk (it's easy to get spoiled), but we started with a week visiting Suesan's family and friends in Toronto, which is always relaxing for me... So I've managed to get the November Circuit wrapped up a little early.

We're heading East tomorrow to continue or Fall Color vacation. We'll drive across the north side of Lake Ontario, then drop into New York, meandering through New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine before getting to Boston. My sister found some great, fairly inexpensive apartments right in the old historic district, so we managed to secure four nights there, and we're looking forward to some good Italian (and other) food and some nice walking.

Depending on how the time goes, I'm hoping we can drive out to Cape Cod and down into Rhode Island before flying back from Boston. It's been a long time since I've been able to take three weeks away from work, and we're having a good time of it.

We've opened up registration for several GPX events, including our November 2 (Friday) Drivers Ed at Buttonwillow, our November 17 Instructor Open Track Day at Pomona Fairplex, our November 18 Drivers Ed / Time Trail (also at Fairplex), and our December 1 Holiday Party at Long Beach Yacht Club.

Our ever-hard-working President, Suesan Way, has been busy; she's managed to get about half of the PCA Executive Council to attend our Holiday Party

AND some very special people from Porsche. We're also hoping our "new" Zone 8 Representative, Tom Brown, will be able to attend.

Because of this great list of special guests, we expent we'll be selling out the Holiday Party. The room at the Long Beach Yacht Club will only accommodate about 100 people. So, it would be wise to register early.

Our November 17-18 Performance Driving events at Pomona Fairplex will be the last of the year. We had a lot of positive response from drivers, so we decided to make Saturday a "half price" Open Track Day for PCA instructors. It should be a lot of fun and a good learning experience for many of us.

Anyway, we hope to see you at an event soon. If you have any questions or ideas about places you would like the club to visit, give Suesan a call.

Monterey Car Weekby Skip Carterphotos by Nick Perdikaris & Jimmie Mitchell

About the beginning of summer each year you'll notice stuff showing up about the annual August week in Monterey, Califor-nia. If you haven't been, you might ask "Why is a Porsche Club newsletter devoting space to an event 500 miles away that usu-ally doesn't have a lot to do directly with Porsche cars."

The answer lies somewhere in the fact that this is the largest, best conglomeration of car related activities, probably in the world. Over the next few pages you'll see some photographic evidence of this. In actuality it is closer to two weeks of activities, but the last Tuesday to Sunday are the days I try not to miss.

Besides the Rolex historic races at Laguna Seca, the Pebble Beach Concours, Concorso d'Italia, Thursdays parade of Pebble Beach cars into Carmel, endless numbers of fabulous auctions, includ-ing GPX member Will Sanchez, whose 1969 911S brought the highest amount ever paid for that year and model Porsche.

Each year the historic races feature a specific car or person. Be-cause of his recent passing, Carroll Shelby was this year's focus, so there was an incredible homage paid to the man, his cars, his feats and his influence.

Pebble Beach Concours also has specific features, this year Cars of the Maharajas, Fiat, hot rods, German motorcycles and more.

This is a crazy week, and if you haven't been there before, talk to one of us who has, and do it early. Hotel rates usually tripple if you don't know how work around it. Michael Dolphin

October Breakfast Club Meeting by Skip carterphotos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

About 85 people showed up to Frisco's on this nice October morning, a perfect Southern California Porsche day. There was no shortage of interesting (and beautiful) cars to oogle over, and no shortage of good people, good food and lots of door prizes.

We want to thank Eddie Swanenburg, General Manager of Penske Toyota (and a GPX member, friends and owner of a wonderful 914/6). Eddie brought a large detail bucket full of great car cleaning products. Todd McElhaney was the lucky winner of that one. Our 50/50RafflewinnerwasTommyLynn,andtherewereabout 20 others who took home other door prizes.

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for Porschephiles

Carroll Shelby: The Authorized Biographyby Rinsay Mills, published by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN

Bruce Herrington

Carroll Shelby was 89 when he died last May. This book makes clear that he lead a much more complex, mufti-faceted life than most people would have imagined, making for a very fascinating, eye-opening biography. It is a well written, true-life narrative; it is a great read for anyone who likes life stories, even if they don’t know the difference between a Shelby and a Sherman, a sports car race and a stock car race.

Carroll Shelby: The Authorized Biography is a very comprehensive book of stories, mostly quoted from interviews with people who worked with Shelby on his many ventures. The book is incredibly detailed and intensely personal, with encyclopaedic coverage of the races in which he drove, managed the team, or manufactured the cars entered.

The first third of the book is about his rustic childhood and his years as a driver, racing other people’s cars of various makes in a wide variety of classes both in the US and Europe. Included are many racing reports: his personal recollections of races run and the activities and associations that occurred between races. Very few of these stories are dull, even the George Lucas got into the act, and a surprising cast of famous characters in motor-racing float in and out of the story, not the least of which was a high-school kid who came and helped out summers — Edsel Ford!

The middle third of Carroll Shelby: The Authorized Biography deals with his glory years in the development, manufacture and racing of Cobras, and then various Mustang varients, not to mention involvement with Sunbeam Tigers and, of course, the GT40 and even the Ford GT.

Throughout the book, there are allusions to Shelby as a super salesman — not so much in selling goods, but in bringing people onboard with his way of thinking. Nowhere is that more in evidence than in the way the Cobra project fell into place almost overnight (after years of indirect groundwork)

by Shelby’s convincing AC Cars of Thames Ditton, England and Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, Michigan that hot-rodding a Ford engine and transmission into an AC Ace chassis was a wonderful idea well worth supporting financially.

The Cobra was designed and developed to be a production car — 100 examples in the first batch. But racing was never far from Shelby’s mind, and the very first example to reach the US

was tweaked for racing, and FIA homologation was applied for well before the first batch was completed. The extensive and intensive coverage of the races and the preparation and development of the race cars will captivate any armchair racer or racing mechanic.. The last third deals with the evolution of the other projects: the GT40, the Shelby Mustangs and, particularly, the Fordization of Shelby American. True, racing and race car development continued, but increasingly it was Ford Dearborn that was calling the shots and Carroll came to feel, and effectively be, a hired hand rather than the boss. Overall, the story of Shelby-American and Ford appears to be another instance of the tendency of centralized control to stifle creativity, initiative, and success, though the GT40 finally

did beat the Ferraris. The discussion of the various allegations of manipulations on behalf of Henry Ford II to determine the winner of the ‘66 Le Mans race may smack of power politics at its worst, but as Ken Miles, arguably the most affected by the situation, put it: “He who pays the piper calls the tune”. Interesting reading, indeed!

In retirement from things automotive, Shelby became involved in such things as conducting African Safaris (with internationally famous customers), and African beef ranching, all in the midst of civil/revolutionary unrest, which included the execution of the national leader who had been the social host and supporter of Shelby’s ranching venture. What a story!

And then there was the motorcycle wheel business... And Carroll Shelby’s Original Texas Chilli, the Toyota 2000GT, and the Chrysler performance department under Lee Iococca that Shelbized even Dakota pickups... Then

there were the Continuation Cars (Cobras assembled on left over chassis from termination of production in 1965) and a new Cobra called the Shelby Series 1 because it was based on an Oldsmobile drive train and Ford now owned the Cobra name.

Carroll Shelby: The Authorized Biography has been very thoroughly researched and is based on hours of interviews with Carroll and his family members as well as an incredible roster of interviewees (considering that many were telling tales from the 50s and 60s). It consists of 552, 6 x 9 inch pages, including 13 pages of index and three sections of 8 pages of photos,. Available for the refreshingly round price of $35.00 (Shelby would be pleased), from your favorite book seller, ask for it, or from http://www.motorbooks.com

Any of our readers who have gone on one of our wonderful Central Coast Tours to Morro Bay or Cambria or Paso Robles, have run over that Porsche driver’s delight, Highway 58 between McKittrick and Santa Margarita. It is 80 miles without traffic, a well engineered and maintained strip of two-lane with lots of twisties.

Times change! Last month Brita and I made the passage on our way to San Simeon. Right in the middle, in California Valley, we encountered a convoy or 30-40 overloaded big rigs, all nose to tail and moving under escort (slow). "What are they doing here?" asked I. We found out soon enough. That area is now hosting some major photo-voltaic electric generating stations (I mean big-time), and the trucks were clearly bearing a shipment of flat solar panels and foundations as they turned off after some miles into an area marked as a solar electric plant.

WHEELS OF PROGRESSby Marty Goldsmith

Let me tell you, the truck convoys are doing nothing to improve the road conditions. So bear it in mind, and we will be doing proper reconnaissance before we plan another trip over that route.

Tech Notes from Tony Callas & Tom PrineBeauty is in the Details (courtesy of Callas Rennsport)

Tony

Cal

las

Historically, Porsche’s paint quality has always been world class. However, over time, your car’s paint is exposed to combina-tions of dust, dirt, tree sap, bird droppings, water, chemicals plus everything else in the air which can take a toll on the qual-ity of the finish. Of course, the painted surface of any car must be cared for to maintain its outstanding finish. Unfortunately, not all Porsche owners keep up with the maintenance of the exterior finish. Reasons differ, but the most common is just not having the time to do it yourself.

Today, there are many fixed location and mobile professional detailing services that cater to conscientious car owners that want to preserve their cars fine finish. When choosing a detail service business, it is best to get recommendations from someone you trust: your friends, your mechanic, a high quality paint shop or the local PCA (Porsche Club of America) chapter. It is also important to use companies that utilize methods and products that are good for the car, not what’s time expedient or most profitable for them.

Detailing or cleaning and waxing the paint should be done at least four times per year, more if needed or desired. This should include cleaning, claying the surface if it is rough, polishing and waxing. Cleaning and preserving the interior surfaces (especial-ly the leather) is also important. If you are on a budget, pass on the tire treatments, carpet shampoo and other Concours event cleaning and presentation extras.

Every time at the end of your daily drive, always check the painted surfaces and remove any foreign material on the paint. This may save the paint from having a permanent blemish.

With the high cost involved to refinish your car (or even a panel on your Porsche) it is far better to maintain the paint so it looks great and protects your invest-ment for a long time.

Here are some of our notes: -High speed buffing machines are not recommended. -Pure Carnuba wax is recommended but it can be difficult to work with. -Never wash or wax your car in the direct sunlight or on a hot day unless it is garaged. -Hide food is best for pure leather but rarely is most car interiors actually pure leather. Most have a painted surface. Dyed leather is closer to pure but is still somewhat impervious to conditioners. -At times, a leather conditioner will tarnish or stain the lighter color leathers. -Be careful of interior dressings. They work well for the looks, but if you stop utilizing the product, there is a possibility of quickly drying out the vinyl or leather. -Sheepskins or seat covers are a good idea if the cover gets removed periodically and the seats treated or the covers will dry out the upholstery. -The sun is probably the worst thing for your cars finish and interior aside from wear. -We do not recommend paint treatments or sealants. We believe the paint is a living thing that needs to breath. If you seal this surface, you might be causing more harm than good.

October 6 Board Meeting Minutesby Marty Goldsmith, Secretary

Brita & Marty Goldsmith

The meeting came to order at 10:50. Board members present were Suesan Way, Dave Hockett, Marty Gold-smith, Gail Sachs, Susan Moard, and Skip Carter. Also attending were Brita Goldsmith, Jack & Ginny Case, Mark Dodson, Rey Garnica, John Baskett, Charles Weaver & Dan Hockett. There will be no board meeting in November, as most of board will be attending our Buttonwillow event.

Suesan announced that because our Holiday Party takes place on the same weekend as the PCNA/PCA Tech Tac-tics, some members of the National PCA Board and staff will attend our affair. Susan Moard needs more help with arrangements.

We are asking for nominations from our members for the annual awards that are presented at the Holiday Party.

Suesan reported that owing to the work of the Hock-ett brothers, we have been able to acquire a proper PA system for use in our event trailer. She has also obtained credit card reading devices usable with a smart phone that will enable us to accept credit card payments at meeting, events, and other places.

Gail reports that we have 592 members at last count.

There was a summary of the situation regarding choice of charities. While unanimity escapes us, there was consensus to remain local in our efforts. Our promises to ASUDEC and Children's Dental will be honored for this year, and next year our sole charity will be the Long Beach Children's Dental Health Clinic.

The tour to Borrego Springs is fully subscribed. Planning for a tour to Solvang is underway for next year. We will begin planning for a tour to the Mount Baldy area, and possibly also one to Big Bear.

There was brief discussion of the Festival of Speed (April 5-7, 2013) and our sponsorship of the Test and Tune Day (also DE) at Buttonwillow on November 2. Because many of our board will be at that event, the November Break-fast Club meeting will be covered by John, Gail, and Rey. The board meeting has been cancelled.

Skip reports that we are getting better turn-around on printing of the Circuit.

Rey reports that he work-ing on a charity event at a restaurant/comedy show on a Sunday afternoon, perhaps in February.

John Baskett will chair the nominations committee. Bal-lots will appear in the November Circuit.

There was discussion regarding our policy of who can speak at our meetings. These requests need to be man-aged by the president.
