Sleazy Dog Construction

...and a word or two from the President's seat — Skip Carter

Frisco's has been a great location for our monthly Breakfast Club Meetings and, for our October cover, the Frisco's staff put on Halloween costumes and were ready when Jimmie Mitchell arrived with his camera.

Jimmie saw new member Martin Rodriguez's black 911 Carrera with orange stripping, and quickly made them the center of the shot. Welcome to the club, Martin!

On the Cover...

October is here, which means it's time for our annual election of officers. At our September board meeting, several current members of the board stated that they would step down from their positions in 2010, which included myself as president, Discussion continued at the meeting and during the next few weeks, and we have a slate of candidates: President Suesan Way Vice-president Rick Mills Treasurer Greg Schill Secretary Marty Goldsmith Membership Jimmie Mitchell Activities Hazel Hofsess Editor Skip CarterYou'll find a ballot inside. There are also opportunities for many of you to get involved in club activities. We have new people already volunteering to work with charity, timing, tech inspection, tours and driving events. We can always use more help and ideas, so don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, ideas or wish to help us out in some way.

This is my 75th issue of The Circuit, and I'm looking for someone to take on some of the production process. I've been very involved in our Driving Events program, and would like to spend more time with it in 2010.

Exciting news - we have a handshake agreement with the Golden Gate Region to co-produce a PCA Club Race and DE at Buttonwillow next May. Being in a position to produce the highest level of PCA driving, the Club Race, is truly exciting.

We are also about to secure a date, probably in February, for a PCA Drivers Education Instructor Certification training at Streets of Willow. We have been looking at ways to better train our driving instructors, and this seems like an excellent opportunity. Stay tuned for more news.

We have secured two dates for our Day Away from Work DE / Autocross events in 2010: March 22 & October 4. We want to thank Circle Porsche for continuing as our Driving Events primary sponsor.

So, getting some help producing The Circuit would free up some time for me with Driving Events.

November 7 is our annual 912 Registry Breakfast Club meeting. We're looking forward to seeing quite a few of these Porsche, not only at Friscos, but at the Annual Benton Performance BBQ & Tech Session immediately following breakfast. If you haven't been to one of these BBQs at Benton's La Habra shop, you have another opportunity next month. Don't miss it!

You'll notice flyers for a Sunday drive to the Santa Paula Airport on November 1 (page 7) and one for our December 5th Holiday Party (page 8). Plans have been firmed up, and we've just opened up registration.

Lots of opportunity for fun with Porsche friends!

GPX Tour to California Central Coast Wine Tour & Avila Beach Concours

By popular demand, GPX has scheduled a winery tour centered on the Paso Robles area. It is planned so we can also attend the Cal Central Coast Region's annual Zone 8 Concours, held in conjunction with the well-known Avila Beach Concours.

— — — The program goes like this — — —

Friday — Depart Carrow's Restaurant in Ventura (2401 Harbor Blvd) at 8:30am SHARP. We suggest arriving at 7:30 for breakfast. Our caravan will follow a very scenic, very Porsche route on country roads, arriving in Paso Robles for a late lunch. The route includes Sespe Gorge, Wheeler Gorge, spectacular coastal mountain scenery, Cuyama Valley farming area, the West Kern Oil Museum, Midway Oilfield, the Temblor Range, Carriso Plain National Monument, and miles of coastal mountain ranch country. The rest of the day we are free to enjoy the historic downtown area and other attractions. We will have recommendations for dinner locations. Those unable to caravan with us can zip up the freeway and arrive for supper or Saturday morning's tour.

The Adelaide Inn (www.AdelaideInn.com) has 18 rooms held for us (up to 30 days before event). One queen - $82.80 plus tax (2 queens available). Cancel up to 72 hrs. There are other events going on, so make reservations early (ask for "Porsche Club”). Make reservations at (805) 238-2770

Saturday — We have a five-hour Wine Tasting Tour set up on the Central Coast Trolley (bus) charter, which includes lunch. The Trolly picks us up in front of the Adalaide Inn at 11 am and returns about 4 pm. It sounds like a fun guided tour in a colorful vehicle (http://www.centralcoasttrolley.com). Owing to the capacity of the Trolley vehicle, our group is limited to twenty persons. First come-first serve, so sign up early. You must send a check for the wine tour to reserve your spot (see below). We have a group dinner booked for Saturday night.

Sunday — We will drive one-half hour south to Avila Beach (near San Luis Obispo) to attend the Avila Beach Concours & Cal Central Coast Region Zone 8 Concours (http://www.avilabeachconcours.com) (Or make your way down later in the morning). The Grand Prix Region is having a relaxed and interesting outing to Santa Paula, an old “small city” near the Santa Clara River, between Castaic and Ventura on Highway 126.

9:00 am — Meet for breakfast at the well-known Hozy’s Grill,a racing-themed diner at American Racing Products (www.hozysgrill.com). 1760 E. Lemonwood Dr, Santa Paula

10:00 am — Drive a few blocks to the Santa Paula Oil Museum (www.oilmuseum.net), the original headquarters of Union Oil Company. It is devoted to the early oil drilling days in California.

11:30 — Drive to the Santa Paula Airport. This private airport features a multi-hangar air museum, open to the public on the first Sunday of each month (www.amszp.org). They have a well-known lunch facility, so bring your own basket or try an airport burger.

Every First Sunday of the month, please come out to visit our Museum! Local aviation history comes alive on First Sundays. Our Chain of Hangars

are open for you to explore from 10am until 3pm.

Hangar Number One is the first in our chain of hangars. It tells the story of the founding of Santa Paula Airport in 1930, and that's just the beginning of the adventure. Each of these privately owned hangars in our Chain houses a variety of vintage aircraft and privately owned collections of various types of memorabilia from antique radios to racecars. Several other aircraft owners put their antique aircraft on static display and many vintage aircraft also fly

in each month. The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 723 offers free airplane rides to kids ages 7-17. Cancel if rain.

Grand Prix Region's Santa Paula Sunday —

This should be a fine family trip, with things to interest everyone.

RSVP to Marty Goldsmith [email protected] so we will have a count of how many are coming.

We owe the restaurant and the museums an estimate of how many will be there.

On September 5, after our Breakfast Club Meeting at Frisco, a number of us headed north on the 405 freeway to a Tech Session held at Accutrack, which is located at 1117 6th Street in Manhattan Beach.

There was a good crowd already there when we arrived, and Ken Bornstein greeted us as we pulled in. The shop has four bays, and several Porsches were displayed as part of the information. For those of you that have never attended a tech session, it’s a great place to go for answers to about any Porsche related question you could come up with.

In this case, Ken Bornstein was superb in his overall delivery of information on Porsches ranging from 356s to Cayennes. He talked about the various oils and oil change procedures for 356s and other Porsches.

Each attendee was given a basic outline of the topics that were open for discussion. The goal was to cover the common issues that you, the Porsche owner, might encounter, and covered an assortment of issues for owners of Cayennes, 996s, Boxsters, 911s, 964s, 993s, 944s, and 356s. Among the general areas talked about were brakes, tire wear, oils, water pumps, timing belts, carburetors, brake fluids coolants, electronic issues, suspension, DME relays and on and on and on… Everything you wanted to know about Porsches was discussed by the professionals.

The next time you hear about an upcoming tech session, I would highly recommend that you bring any and all questions that you have about your car. You will likely learn a lot of things that you had no idea about; things that will make owning your Porsche a better experience.

I have been around Porsche's my whole life. When I was very young, I was lucky enough to have had my father bring me along to the first race at Road Atlanta, the 1970 Can Am. In this race, dark horse Tony Dean, in a second hand 908/2 "Flounder", beat the mighty McClaren's of Hulme & Revson, and also Jackie Stewart's L&M Lola.

As a kid on my bedroom wall I had a poster of Mark Donohue's 917/30. On the other wall was a Le Man's movie poster. I had a gulf decal on my bicycle because I thought it would make it look like a Gulf-Porsche.

The next few years I watched George Follmer and Mark Donohue win in the 917s at Road Atlanta. Next came the Camel GT's with Peter Gregg's #59 935, and later Al Holbert & Derek Bell in the Lowenbrau Special 962. Last year it was the yellow Penske RS Spyders in the ALMS series at Laguna Seca. I had a chance to hang out with Romain Dumas at Bubba Gump's restaurant on Cannery Row after the race. He explained that they didn't add tire pressure after the sun went down and the track cooled, costing the race.

My father, Dick Inman, gave me an expensive habit! To be sure, I was lucky enough to have him out here in California this past weekend from Georgia, along with my brother, David. It was great hearing all their old Porsche stories all weekend long.

My dad had been dreaming about the Historics for decades, and never thought he'd get the chance, much less with Porsche as the featured Marque! I was able to meet Porsche racing legend Vic Elford on Saturday. I had met George Follmer and Brian Redman at Sebring several years ago, but I had never seen the 917K's driven in anger until this weekend. Not only that, but there were four or five out on the track at the same time... An emotional day!

On my bedside table right now is the new biography of Mark Donohue. The only thing that could have possibly made this past weekend any better would have been Jerry Seinfeld coming up to me and saying: "Michael, I want you to drive car #20; I want you to drive flat out; I want Porsche to win The Monterey Historics."

Other than that, Saturday was a dream come true!

Breakfast Club Meeting Report — September 5by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

For the month of September, our Breakfast Club Meeting at Friscos in Long Beach was the place to be. It was another typical Southern California day that brought out magnificent weather, magnificent people and magnificent cars… Porsches. The only thing missing were those of you who didn't make it. You should have come. You would have had a great time.

And, you would not have been alone. We had a whopping total of 95 members on our roster, and several others who just visited. It was indeed an impressive site. The motif of the day was Halloween. All of Frisco’s waitresses were decked out in black and orange costumes. And, to top that off, their attire perfectly matched the 1974 Black with Orange striped Carrera Targa belonging to Martin Rodriguez, a new member who was attending his first GPX event. Quite a welcome for Martin and his pristine Porsche.

Of the numerous attendees, Shannon White showed up for her first Friscos breakfast. Shannon (who recently married GPX Member, Greg White), was a Ricky and Ronnie’s regular. Several other infrequent breakfast club members showed up, including Marti Stewart, Alan Hosea, Jeff Edmondson and his wife Sue Thieman, along with Joe Steenstra and his daughter, Jackie.

Andrew Perou was also attending his first meeting. Andrew, who was recruited by Paolo Stuppa, told us that his 1993 Polar Ice 996 C4S is the first car he’s ever owned. By the way, congratulations to Paolo, as this is the fourth person he’s recruited to join the GPX Region. Two other new members were Tony Tate and Steve Orr. Steve was recruited by Tony Callas, and arrived driving a 1988 black Carrera Targa.

All in all, the meeting was chock full of giveaways and guest speakers. Skip Carter and Suesan Way had a number of raffle items from Monterey, Pebble Beach and the Porsche Parade and, of course, Spencer Lee walked away with one of the prizes.

Michael Dolphin described how it felt to drive a Turbo Panamera while at the Monterey Historics. Porsche brought 32 of these cars to the event for test drives.

Richard Clewett spoke about our Tech Inspection team for Day Away events. He is conducting a training session later this month. Roy Lock introduced the Monterey Historics poster from this year's event that he had purchased, framed and donated for our silent auction at the December 5th Holiday Party.

He also mentioned that he and his son, Frank, had managed to get about a dozen significant signatures on the poster. We already have two significant auction bids tendered.

Rick Mills spoke about our upcoming Oktoberfest event. It is shaping up to be a very nice Saturday afternoon BBQ.

Carl Toffelmire and Lennie Yee from Pacific Porsche spoke of their upcoming service clinic and Octoberfest Panamera presentation. They also presented Roy Lock and Hazel Hofsess with a pair of very special, limited edition Porsche books, as appreciation for their volunteerism.

Others in attendance were: Norm Abell, Bob Baddy, Rick Becker, Gary Bengston, Ken Bornstein, Steve Brazell, Ron Brughman, Joe Bryant, Gary Cafaro, Skip Carter, Jack & Ginny Case, Elliot Chandler, Carlos Chang, Arturo Chaparro, Richard Clewett, Dale Cunningham, Norma Ann Dawson, Art Day, David Demaria, Mark Dodson, Jeff Edmondson & Sue Thieman, Richard Elliott, Mark Endo, Lars Fallman, Steve Firshein, Albert Franco, Steve Glas, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Lorenzo Gray, Jeff Haas, Bill Haney, Hazel Hofsess, Alan Hosea, Gentry Humphrey, DeWayne Ichiriu, Patricia Geary Johnson, Alvin Jones, De Jur, Dan Koenig, Stephen Krupnick, Ron & Karen La Forest, Dal B. & Spencer Lee, Bob & Karen Lewis, Roy & Frank Lock, Roger Lubeck, Rod Williams and Taysha, Lauryn & Madisyn Mahoney, Steve Marino, Frank Medrano, Phil Millard, Rick Mills, Jimmie Mitchell, Steve Orr, John Perchulyn, Andrew Perou, Marty Petcoff, Tom Potace, John & Patty Reilly, Herb Reynolds, Martin Rodrigues, Peter Ross, Greg Schill, Robert Shanklin, Ron Shanon, Dan Stern, Paolo Stuppa, Steve Sweet, Walter Swenman, Bob Turner, Robert Venezia, Steven Walberg, Ron Walecki, Suesan Way, Chuck Weaver, David Weiss, Greg & Shannon White, Sue Williams, Mike Wilson, Marc Bixen & Katina Zinner. Featured Advertiser: CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH CLINICBy Marty Goldsmith

Have you noticed an ad in The Circuit for the Children’s Dental health Clinic? Are they hoping that GPX members will bring their children in for dental services? No, they are asking for community support. To find out what it was all about, I visited their Executive Director, Dr. John Blake, at the clinic. He is located in the Buffum Pavilion on the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center campus.

Their mission is: To provide access to quality dental care and family oral health education that may not be available to infants, children, adolescents and persons with disabilities due to their economic status. In other words, they are providing care to about 10,000 Long Beach area children, every year, whose families simply do not have the means to utilize ordinary dental offices.

It all started 77 years ago when a Long Beach dentist, Dr. Robert Anderson, created a mobile dentist office (two chairs) to serve the school children of the area (see photo of trailer). While there is still a very well equipped mobile dental office used for examinations and screenings, the operation has grown into a main clinic with fifteen operatories and two branch clinics, one in Bellflower and one serving Avalon, on Catalina Island. An interesting footnote is that Dr. Anderson’s grandson is our own advertising chairman, Chuck Weaver.

This non-profit organization is governed by a distinguished Board, numbering political, medical, and business leaders of the community. The main clinic employs about 35 staff members. Their number is augmented by a small number of volunteer specialists. Staff includes general pediatric dentists, orthodontists, endodontists and other specialties, plus the

supporting professional and administrative staff. The equipment used is both modern and attractive.

Special attention is given to making the space supportive to the young patients and their families. Outstanding is the only word to describe the whole operation.

Some of the patients are covered by public health finding; others have no financial means at all. The budget for the clinic

is partially covered by fees paid, some comes from grants by local governments and institutions, and a great deal comes from contributions from people just like us. And, that is why we see their ad in The Circuit.

If you had seen what I saw today, you would do just what I have done – I went home and wrote a check to support this marvelous institution.

Bruce Herrington

Driven: The Racing Photography of Jesse Alexander 1954-1962by Jesse Alexander, published by Chronicle Books, San Francisco

by Bruce Herrington, Riverside Region

I’ve heard that as people mature, they revert back through their developmental stages to, ultimately, virtual infancy. In my case, I guess I must have regressed to being a pre-schooler, because I’ve (once again) come to like picture books. And, the best picture book I know is Jesse Alexander's Driven.

Mr. Alexander has spent a life time in photography, the largest part of it devoted to documenting motorsports. His involvement began in the early 1950s with the birth of the sports car movement in the USA.

Alexander has authored numerous books, including At Speed, Forty Years of Motorsport Photography and Driven. Driven covers the international (read European) motor racing scene from 1954 through 1962, and serves as a virtual catalog of his great photographs.

As a picture book, the “plates” all beg to be mounted on the wall, if it wasn't such a shame to cut up such a fine book. The appendix provides comprehensive captions describing the circumstances of the scenes depicted, segregated to a place where the captions do not detract from the photography.

For ‘bench racers’ who remember the good old days of the 50s and 60s (or at least recognize the drivers faces or names), Driven provides a chance to get an inside look at motorsports racing when it was a sport and not a business. For you young whippersnappers, it offer a glimpse at motorsports when audience participation was not so constrained by the lawyers.

The introduction (by Sterling Moss) points out that Jesse was not just a highly regarded motor racing photographer, but also a real enthusiast

and gentleman. As an enthusiast he had an eye for the dynamic moment that made a meaningful picture. As a gentleman, he soon became a trusted and accepted member of the 'circus' (as the motor racing world was known). This gave him access to the best action, which resulted is a collection of suburb, meaningful pictures.

Driven is divided into sections by year, from 1954 through 1962. The plates show, the entire spectrum of motor racing activity, from the scorers, timers and strategists, to the mechanics and drivers. But the real focus is on the drivers and their intensity, at work and at play. In that latter category, I love the shot of

Mike Hawthorn, in coat and tie no less, driving a Ferrari TestaRosa through the technical inspection stations, a few days before the 1958 Le Mans.

Other shots show drivers at speed, during driver changes, and just sitting intensely focused in their cockpits. Also included is what is perhaps this reviewer’s all time favorite shot – Jo Bonnier in his trade-mark polo shirt, forcing his RSK Spyder through the Karussell at the 1000 Kilometer race at the Nurburgring, in 1959

Ed: On July 8, 2008 it was announced that the final flight in NASA's space shuttle program would take off on May 31, 2010, four months before the Endeavour, Discovery and Atlantis are retired.

Two further shuttle missions are planned to the International Space Station on October 8 and November 10, while another five flights are scheduled for 2009 and three for 2010.

Endeavour will make the final flight of the shuttle program, which began with the launch of Columbia from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida on April 12, 1981.

I have a lifetime goal of witnessing as many moments in aviation history as possible. One of my bucket list items was to witness a Space Shuttle takeoff on top of a 747 Mothership. I’ve had numerous opportunities but, for one reason or the other, I’ve had to pass. Now that I am retired, my list of reasons has gotten short. But, on the other hand, the opportunity si about gone with the end of the Shuttle program is in sight.

So, here comes the final opportunity, and I am about to blow it. A group of friends and I had planned a Porsche Tour, which ended up coinciding with this last shuttle flight out of Edwards. After all the planning, if I missed the Tour, I would be singing in soprano as I write this story.

However, a plan developed: Leave home at 0230, get to Tony’s for a 0500 show at Edwards. I shoot the 0617 departure and, if the timing was perfect, make the drive scheduled to start at 0900 — If everything was perfect.

The drive to Edwards was 130-140 miles one way. It reminded me of the late 80s when I was a flight test manager on the B-2 at Edwards. We lived in Rossmoor, and I spent the working week at Edwards. Every Monday I was up at 0200 and make the long drive to begin my morning flight test briefings. I made this trip so many times, I would turn on the car stereo and autopilot.

But back to the story. Tony and I made the mandatory show for security checks. The convoy through the security check points started at 0540… Sharp! Snooze, you lose. No whining or excuses. Thirty photographers were allowed. Our security clearances had been sent in and scrutinized by the Air Force and NASA, so we were all set.

Since this was my first time for this event, I did not know what to expect — what lens to pack, where we

were allowed to be, etc. I was a bit anxious, and said my standard prayer. “Dear God, don’t let me screw this up.”

The nice NASA folks deposited us in a spot. It was so dark we could not see 10 feet. We were told there was a line of death. Don’t cross this line. I didn’t understand what the security guys meant. But I did understand the guns they were carrying. A few minutes later, when the sun started to come, up I saw why they said that: We were no more

than 50 feet from the edge of the runway!!! Holy crap! What lens??? What camera setting? Panic!!!

I heard from some of the old salts mumbling that the Shuttle was going to lift off about the 12,000 foot marker. It was heavy today with a slight wind. We were at about the 12,500 feet point. That meant wide angle! Luckily, I had my 18-70 mm on the camera (with a bevy of medium and long lens in the bag).

What ISO? Sunrise and not a moment before or after. My standard shooting at ISO 200 was not going to work. I quickly surmised ISO 1600 would work. I dialed it in and checked. 1/60 at f/4.5. That will have to do. It wasn’t

going to get any better. Noise or no noise, it was going to have to work.

At precisely the crack of dawn, the 747 started to move. We could see the taxi lights on the ship in the distance. As it lined up on the active runway, the sun rose over the mountains in the background. This was a déjà vu moment as it brought me back almost 6 years to a time when I witnessed the final commercial

departure of the Concorde from the edge of the runway at JFK. Exact same set of shooting circumstances. That had a calming effect as I knew what to do.

I saw the 747 start its taxi roll to Runway 22L. There was a slight wind and I felt the chill. As it lifted off, all I could do was concentrate and click away. At precisely 12,000 foot it lifted off! Those NASA guys were so anally correct.

Ballot for 2010 Board of DirectorsCut along dotted lines and mail by October 15 to: Porsche Club of America, Grand Prix Region c/o Rick Mills, 4110 chestnut Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807

The Engine oil air separator directly affects the engine crankcase atmosphere because, basically, all Porsches from 1980 on, including the current 986, 987, 996, 997, Cayman & Cayenne engines, all are positive crankcase type systems. This means that the engine crankcase

has vacuum supplied from the intake manifold to collect and burn the residual combustion by-products or blow-by in the crankcase by running it through the engine again, all in an effort to lower the vehicle tailpipe emissions.

On most occasions when the oil separator fails, the low pressure (vacuum) in the engine crankcase rises to an unusually or abnormally high figure and, more likely than not, it ends up drawing engine oil into the intake system. This usually fouls spark plugs and, in rare cases, causes damage to the oxygen (O2) sensors, catalytic convertors and, possibly, various other sensitive fuel injection components. In extreme cases an oil separator failure with excessively high vacuum can actually cause the rear main seal to make noise, i.e. "honk".

Interestingly enough, the only way to test the oil separator is to periodically test the engine crankcase

vacuum with a water filled Monometer (aka: a Slack Tube tester), which is an ultra sensitive vacuum gauge. On BMW's and Porsche’s, the engine crankcase vacuum is normally around 4-6” (inches) of water. When oil separators fail the crankcase vacuum can rise to the 8-12” range and even higher, depending on the extent of the failure.

When the oil separator starts to fail on Boxsters (986 & 987), you generally start to see a substantial amount of smoke from the exhaust tailpipe. When the oil separator completely fails, the engine exhaust smoke can reach dangerous proportions. You'll think your Boxster has turned into an anti-mosquito smoke machine.

When the oil separator fails on 996-997s, it usually does NOT create the same exhaust tailpipe smoke as a Boxster. It is almost like being a silent killer (and a costly surprise).

Sometimes when an oil separator fails, it can cause the Check Engine Light (CEL) to come on. you may not be experiencing any other symptom, but the CEL should get your attention. This condition should be checked out with the Porsche factory PIWIS tester. It is important to see exactly what is going on. Otherwise, you're just guessing
