Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Jimmie Mitchell took this photo at our recent Day Away from Work. Neil Heimburge, our Zone 8 Autocross Chair (on the right) was Yaw Davis' instructor. This was Yaw's first track event and, evidently, Neil thought Yaw did a great job.

On the Cover...

May 2010

It turns out I was right about the California Festival of Speed at Fon-tana... We had a great event, and there were Porsches galore for every enthu-siast’s taste. If you love Porsches, there wasn't a better place for you to be that weekend. There was open access to the garages and pits. There was Club Racing, Time Trialing and Greg Franz's Pirelli Cup drivers. We had a lovely

Concours on busy Vendor’s Row, and there was a nice looking Porsche corral going on. The lunch time track tours saw a couple of hundred cars enjoy themselves lapping the track over the weekend.

Roy Lock did a fabulous job in bringing out a large contingency of 356s. We had thirty 356s in their own run group during lunch time Track Tours. Dal Lee led the group driving his Silver 1963 T6. They looked great out on that banked Nascar 1 turn at Auto Club Speedway. We will cover the entire event in the June Circuit.

We also enjoyed watching one of our own advertisers, James Sofranas and his GMG Motorsport pre-pared Porsche on the track at Fontana. The following weekend we found him racing at the Long Beach Grand Prix, competing in the American Le Mans Series. James had a nice showing at Long Beach and will be at Laguna Seca this May.

Porsche Cars North America brought out the some of their finest, and took people out all weekend for autocross style test drives. What great support we have from PCNA.

Many thanks go to all the Festival volunteers, and a special GPX thanks to Marty Goldsmith who did a lot of work organizing Track Tours. There was a tremendous turnout of GPX members who put in a lot of hard work and time.

Remember that we have a number of events coming up – Our annual Concours d’Elegance is at a new venue – the Lakewood Country Club on May 16th. If you are not interested in having your car judged, you can wash it (or not) and bring it out for the Display Group. This is going to be a really lovely concours in a beautiful setting – people are getting excited. There is a great catered lunch available for spectators as well as participants, but you need to let either Dal or me know ahead of time. Contact us if you have questions. The flyer is on page 4.

As always, I love hearing from you. If you have ideas for the club, don’t hesitate to send them to me or call — [email protected] – 619.992.4287

Registrations for our joint Buttonwillow event with Golden Gate Region are going well. Special thanks to Don Matz for jumping in and redesigning the Buttonwil-low flyer (page 15). It's amazing what someone with talent can do.

Leamon Stansell is a long time GPX member who has taken the Top Time of Day award at our last couple of Day Away from Work events. You can see Leamon's car (and part of Leamon) on page 8. He owns a company called Sunsational Skylights (http://123skylights.com/), which has taken an ad out in the Circuit (page 26). As a retired General Contractor who knows something about skylights, I can vouch for the high quality of product Sun-sational installs. Whether the easy to install Tubular type, or a sophisticated operable Velux unit with electrically operated shades and screens, Leamon can set you up.

Glenn and Christine Yee are PCA members advertis-ing this month in The Circuit. You will find Glenn Yee Motorsports at about any Porsche driving event in South-ern California, including last month's California Festival of Speed and Orange Coast Region's El Toro autocross. Glenn Yee Motorsports specializes in the 996 and 986 family of Porsches, including GT2s, GT3s, Turbos, Cups, etc. You can find their website at: http://www.glen-nyeemotorsports.com/. Their ad is on page 30.

Our feature article this month is our March 22 Day Away from Work Drivers Ed / Autocross at Streets of Willow. When I layout these articles, I always battle between using a few, larger, dramatic photos that would be more "artistically appealing," and attempting to include a photo of every one of the drivers and volunteers who were there making it happen and having fun. Invariably, I end up with the latter. If your photo isn't on those pages, it's because I didn't have one, or could ID you (another reason we insist on car numbers). A special mention to Leamon Stansell, whose AR1 914 took Top Time of Day honors for the second event in a row. Jimmie Mitchell's photo of Leamon in the pits is on page 8, along with a Michael Dolphin caption.

It was another great day with a lot of smiles and camara-derie. Our Timing Team is doing a great job, improving at every event. Registration and Grid teams are fabulous, and we're already looking forward to our Fall event May 4.

But before that, we have two other Performance Driving events that GPX is producing with other regions. First is our May 22-23 PCA Club Race & Drivers Ed/Time Trial at Buttonwillow. We've teamed up with Golden Gate Region and, in spite of the economy, registrations seem to be doing pretty well. Novices are welcome at this event, so if you've wanted to bring your car out, there is a mandatory "Ground School at the track on Friday night, and you will have an instructor assigned to work with you throughout the weekend. Buttonwillow is a great track and facility with a good restaurant, an air conditioned lounge area that offers a great place to watch the track from, and will be a fun opportunity to spend a weekend with our friends from the San Francisco Bay area. The ad is on page 15.

Our second Performance Driving event is the Fairplex Autocross in Pomona on June 27. We've teamed up with the San Gabriel Valley region for this one. It has been de-cades since PCA has run at this facility. The 1.2 mile road course is freshly paved and is going to be great fun. There is a lot of room and, with paid corner workers, we should be able to maximize track time. The ad is on page 14.

If you have any questions about upcoming events, or ideas you'd like us to consider, give Suesan a call or email: 619 992-4287 or [email protected]

Breakfast Club Update — April 3by Peter Ross, photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

At the April Breakfast Club Meeting at Frisco’s in Long Beach, for the second month in a row, we dealt with cloudy and dreary weather. But that was not enough to deter members of the Grand Prix Region from getting in their Porsches and driving to the meeting.

Our President, Suesan Way, moderates the meeting, and will-ingly gives the microphone to a host of our members who serve up a variety of information on upcoming events and services.

We were treated to a number of speakers, including Barbara Liberman-Jones of the Children's Dental Health Clinic, which provides dental care for underprivledged children in the Long Beach area. Orange Coast Region's Larry Moore was on hand to speak about our upcoming Joint Region Photo Rally on July 11. Pacific Porsche's Lennie Yee spoke of a variety of upcoming events, including a Blind Rally & Swap Meet, where a number of great door prizes will be offered, including tires, oil and a $600.00 motorsports jacket.

Milt Becker introduced new GPX Members. Roy Lock spoke about the 356 Corral, prizes and the Festival of Speed. Lennie Yee sweetened the pot by offering a Porsche Design 356 Watch that is sure to become a collector’s item. Nick Perdikaris spoke about the upcoming Buttonwillow DE / Club Race, which will offer lots of track time on a 3-mile long track. This event is teamed up with the Golden Gate Region.

Other speakers included Marty Goldsmith, who spoke about the upcoming Paramount Ranch Tour. Marc Bixen of Red Line Service spoke about the Festival's Vendor's Row. Tom Gould of TC’s Garage spoke of his parts business for all makes and models of Porsche / BMW, along with various events related to his position as the Zone 8 Rally Chair, and the upcoming Porsche Parade in Illinois. Jimmie Mitchell spoke about seek-ing out PCA historical memorabilia for a project he’s working on for the Website. So if you have any old PCA related items in your garage that may be of interest, please contact Jimmie and let him know.

Jeff Haas of Haas Entertainment, spoke about the sound system that he recently installed in his Porsche and, after the meeting, he pulled his car in front of Frisco’s and let interested members sit inside and hear what a super quality stereo sounds like. What an impressive sound system. Haas Entertainment was also at the Festival of Speed. Michael Dolphin, our Zone 8 Representa-

tive, was also on hand to talk about DE Events and the instruc-tors who teach the skills that are necessary to become a better driver. He also spoke about autocrossing and the importance of having the correct tire pressures. He asked two very important questions…”Do you know what your tire pressure should be?” and “Do you know what it currently is?” Michael said your tire pressure at a minimum, should be checked every 30 days.

Afterwards Rick Mills, our Vice-President, with the help of Pete Adanalian, presided over the monthly raffle and give-aways, which featured a host of really nice items that were charitably donated by Pacific Porsche and Lennie Yee. The main prize that I wanted to win was a Porsche Design Golf Club Driver. But, as usual, I had a cheesy number that never came up.

Others in attendance at were: Norm Abell, Bob Baddy & Junko Kamei, Robert & Pam Barclay, John Barrone, Gary Bengt-som, Carl & Chris Bloom, Bruce Brown, Joe Bryant & Sandi Richlin, John & Virginia Case, Arturo Chaparro, Norma Ann Dawson, Richard Elliott, Lars Fallman, Henry Fella, Steve Firshein, Albert Franco, Marty Friedman, Steve Glas, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Tom & Bev Gould, Lorenzo Gray, Charles Harrell, Craig Hibbard, Dan & Dave Hockett, Hazel Hofsess, Gentry Humphrey, DeWayne Ichiriu, Merv Janquart, Bruce Jephcott, Patricia Geary Johnson, DeJur, Mike and Karla Jones, JP, Stephen Krupnick, Dal & Spencer Lee, Derek Lee, Jim Lenahan, Karen Lewis, Dickson Lew, Roy Lock, Rico Lopez, Roger Lubeck, Frank Medrano, Phil Millard, Claude Mitchell, David & Susan Moard, Mike Mulligan, Vincent & Connie Parker, Marty Petcoff, Herb & Ann Reynolds, Allan Rosen-berg, Peter Ross, Will Sanchez, Greg Schill, Michael Shaffer, Robert Shanklin, Ron Shanon, Dan Stern, Steve Sweet, Walter Swenman, Bob Turner, Patrick VanLeeuwen, Greg White & Shawn Wilson. I hope I didn’t omit anyone or misspell any names. If so, I apologize.

Again, as a reminder, if you have changed addresses, phone numbers or e-mail accounts, please contact PCA National at www.pca.org and update your information. In addition, please notify Skip Carter, [email protected], and Jimmie Mitch-ell, [email protected], with the same updated informa-tion. Also, we are still missing the current e-mail addresses of a significant number of our members. So check your information on the PCA National Website, and if it needs to be updated, please do so. Beyond that, we’ll see you at the next Breakfast Club Meeting.

Porsches are meant to be driven, they say. Newlon has gone to great lengths to ensure that his 912 fulfills its heritage. U.S. Route 95 is the second of a series of books through which Mike shares his drives with us. His books give readers a taste of formerly beaten paths, current and former U. S. highways that, for many, now languish out of sight and out of mind. Mike's books give armchair travelers a chance to kick back and experience travel to other places, and even other times.

Like his earlier book, U.S. Route 395, U.S. Route 95 reports on a drive of what remains of a formerly continuous 2-lane route from border to border — in this case from San Luis, Arizona to Eastport, Idaho, officially 1574 miles. The route is still continuous, and drivers can follow US 95 signs from the Mexican to the Ca-nadian border. True, some of the route is along other routes. But follow the US 95 signs and they'll take you all the way.

This book does not discuss the genesis of the system of US Highways (established by Congress in 1926). See Mr. Newlon's U.S. Route 395 book for coverage of this topic. U.S. Route 95 is dedicated to Mr. Edwin Warley James, an employee of what is today the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1925 Mr. James proposed the national highway numbering system, with east-west highways hav-ing even numbers (from north to south), and north-south highways having odd numbers (numbered east to west). It is doubtful the even he could have conceived the current multi-lane beltways of our Interstate highway system developed in the 1950s.

US 95 is known as the Desolation Highway, which sounds fine to Porsche drivers who like wide open spaces free of traf-fic. The problem is that most don't consider that these wide open spaces are also free of gas stations, fast food establish-ments, lodging and other services that are so ubiquitous in the greater LA Basin, where most of us spend our driving time. But, if you, like this reviewer, have long heard of the

Desolation Highway, and always wondered what it was like, this is the book for you. Like his earlier book, this is more of a trip diary than a travelogue or tour guide. Few commercial travel guides deal with tricks

for keeping the oil temperature up when driving in very cold weather, interfacing with presi-dential security forces, or provide a driver's eye view of the dash-board documenting legal speeds, as this book does. By including such aides, this book gives the Porsche enthusiast a real you-are-there feeling. Not only that, but you are really there, probably more than if you had driven it yourself, for the author has taken the time to stop and photograph many of the significant build-ings, historic markers and infor-mation signs that most of us just sail by. It turns out that these things really are interesting!

Other items overlooked by most travelers (especially in modern

Porsches), are described and presented in photographs, in-cluding geologic features, hints at future roadway expansions and earlier roadway alignments,

US 95 is largely unknown to most of us, even though we've probably driven part of it, or at least crossed it near Needles or Blythe. There's much more to US 95 than those little bites would lead one to believe. Read this book to find out what you have been missing. Better yet, get the book, hit the highway, and have a blast!

U.S. Route 95, 88 profusely illustrated full color 8-1/2x11 pages, may be obtained for $24.95 at your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or directly from the author at http://www.highwaytripbooks.com.

Board Meeting Notes — April 3Marty Goldsmith, Secretary

President Suesan Way called the meeting to order at 11:50AM. Also present were Rick Mills, Marty & Brita Goldsmith, Greg Schill, Hazel Hofsess, Michael Dolphin, Skip Carter, Norma Dawson, Frank Medrano, Ginnie & Jack Case, Karen Lewis, Lennie Yee, Dal Lee, Jimmy Mitch-ell, Albert Franco, John & Patty Riley, and Bob Strickland.

The date and site of the holiday party was the first topic. The date has been selected, December 4, a prime Saturday. Four locations have been investigated. Menu, pricing and other factors were considered before being put to a vote of all pres-ent. The majority favored the Long Beach Yacht Club.

Skip Carter reported on the outcomes of the last two driving events, the DE Instructor Training and the Day Away, both at Streets of Willow. Sixty-three trainees participated in the first event, and Skip expressed his belief that the quality of the instruction at the Day Away showed great improvement as a result. The event covered expenses, plus a small profit. The Day Away had 82 entrants and was a safe and enjoyable day. It also showed a comfortable profit, and the sponsorship by Circle Porsche was very important. Substantial progress is being made for our next two driving events, both joint ventures, the Buttonwillow DE,TT, and Club race, and the Fairplex AX. He believes that the Fairplex event has satisfac-tory financial projections, and that all of Zone 8 should be pushing for Buttonwillow entries.

Greg Schill reported our first quarter financial results. We are holding our own in difficult financial times, and our reserves are sufficient for our financial safety, and to support necessary equipment additions.

Jimmie Mitchell's latest website effort is compiling a history of the region. He asked that anyone having information or pictures of the early days to let him know. A few people pres-ent were actually present at some early events.

A representative of our new local charity, the Children's Dental Health Clinic had addressed the general meeting. Karen Lewis led a brief discussion of charity matters.

Dal Lee reported on the May Concours at the Lakewood Country Club. He is coordinating with Pacific Porsche, who is the sponsor of the event. Everything is in order. He described the awards design, and showed the layout of the event on a site map. We are expecting an outstanding event.

Several items remained on the agenda and were deferred to the next meeting. We adjourned at 1:00PM

AutomotiveTireTipsSince the introduction of the modern steel belted radial tire, automotive tires can now safely last upwards to 80,000 miles. Most automotive manufacturers

recommend that tires be in service no longer than 6 years on the vehicle, and no longer than 10 years from the date of manufacture.

DOT Number — Mandated by the federal government, every tire has a Department of Transportation number. Up until 1999, the last 3 digits (and from 2000 on, the last 4 digits) of the DOT number describes the week and year the tire was manufactured. For example, tires manu-factured in 1999 and earlier with a DOT number ending in 299 would mean the tire was manufactured in the 29th week of 1989 or 1999. From 2000 on, a tire manufactured in the 29th week of 2009 would have 2909.

In all actuality, the amount of rubber that touches the road, also known as the contact patch, is only approxi-mately a 3” x 8” rectangular section. Contrary to popular belief, when a car is moving, the weight of the car is not what is keeping the tires on the road. It is fundamentally the job of the shock absorbers and stabilizer bars during lateral loads (cornering).

After installing new tires, make sure to drive easy for the first 500 miles (reduced lateral and longitudinal loads, and definitely no sporting events). To facilitate removal of the tire from its original mold, tire manufacturers have uti-lized an internal release agent that will secrete for approxi-mately 500 miles. This release agent will cause the tires to be very slippery when they are new, which can lead to a dangerous situation under certain conditions. Tires are the softest when they are new, and will wear at an accelerated rate until multiple heat cycles have taken place.

Wear indicators — All tires have an external built-in tread wear indicator, also known as the "wear bar." These help you determine when the tire is near or at its wear limit. These wear indicators are between the treads at multiple points on the tire at a height of 2/32". When the tire wear reaches the wear indicator anywhere on the tire, the tread

is down to 2/32" and the tire needs to be replaced. Tires should be replaced in pairs and per axle. Most high perfor-mance auto manufacturers usually recommend replacing all four tires at the same time.

Nitrogen — Filling your tires with nitrogen is beneficial, but not a necessity. Nitrogen molecules are larger that the oxygen/nitrogen molecules that make up the air that sur-rounds us. Thus, nitrogen will leak out at a much slower rate (this normal tire leakage is known as "dispersion"). Nitrogen also has much less moisture and will have a linear (flatter) pressure differential between cold and hot temperatures.

Please note, if your tire pressure falls as little as 4-5psi below Porsche's recommended tire inflation, tire wear can be accelerated by as much as 25%. It is generally recom-mended that the tire pressures be checked at least once a month using a good quality tire pressure gauge.

Rotations — Tire rotation (if your car allows) is generally recommended twice a year.

Wheel alignment — It is preferred to have a 4-wheel alignment performed every time new tires are installed, once a year, or if there was a substantial impact to the wheel or tire (a large pot hole or a curb, etc.).

Tiptronic transmission shifting issues can be created or exaggerated by mismatched rear tires or incorrect tire pres-sures. This should be first on the diagnosis list when any Tiptronic transmission shifting issue exists.
