The Downtown Sandpoint Business Association repre-sents downtown business interests. It does this by means of promoting a positive image for downtown Sandpoint as an exciting place to live, shop, do business, visit and invest, and by coor-dinating an annual schedule of events to bring residents and visitors into the downtown. Addi-tionally, DSBA supports its member businesses, residents and visitors by advocating issues affect-ing downtown Sandpoint, and actively works to develop a stronger economic base by supporting existing businesses and recruiting new busi-nesses. DSBA is also involved in downtown revi-talization projects and programs geared toward improving and sustaining the unique characteris-tics of downtown. The DSBA is a 501(c)6 nonprofit corporation with which the city of Sandpoint contracts to manage the Business Improvement District funds and activities.

A Note from the ManagerSummer has passed and fall has been productive and enjoyable. Tourism has slowed downtown and things are quieter than just a few months ago. But, amazing work is being done behind the scenes as our downtown community gears up for winter activity! The DSBA coordinates a variety of programs to plan and execute events and promo-tions downtown. There could be no better way to keep yourself in the know than to engage yourself as a volunteer. Those who participate in event planning, set up and tear down, coordination and promotion have at least as much fun “working” on events as they do attending. Never miss an exciting downtown event because you didn’t hear about it. Volunteer to have fun at one of the DSBA’s many down-town Sandpoint events!

GOOD NEWS

November 2011 SANDPOINT NEWSLINE 12

Late summer and early fall Friday nights in Sandpoint are exciting for many reasons. The weather is perfect, the town is alive and

there is usually a football game going on at Barlow Stadium. And for those that have been going to the games for the past 14 years, despite all of the changes, there has been one constant, familiar face on the sidelines for the home team. A Sandpoint High School graduate in 1997, Jarrett Robson (Jear-Bear as he is known to the kids at Sand-point High School) has been Sandpoint’s football equip-ment manager for the past 14 years. Everything you see happening with regard to the equipment, Jarrett has had a direct hand in.

“I’m like a bad rash;” Jarrett says with a big smile on his face, “They can’t get rid of me.”

And why would they want too? Jarrett has single hand-edly taken on a job that many of us wouldn’t want to do. It’s very labor intensive, long hours and for most of us; thankless. But that’s not how Jarrett sees things. “I love working for Sandpoint High School. I feel like I am a spoke in the wheel. This is my place, some-where I can make a difference in someone else’s life.” He went on to say he thoroughly enjoys the kids, “I take a lot of pride watching them come in young freshman and walking out young men. I enjoy

seeing the growth and maturity.

When asked to describe the head coaches that he has worked un-der in one sentence each, Jarrett summed it up this way:

Coach Satini Pouala – Great communicator.Coach Shawn Dorris – Great Innovator.Coach Mike Mitchell – Great leader and loyal friend.

When asked to describe his most memorable highlight he didn’t name off the championship runs, a big play in a big game, but rather a thank you letter he received from a player, which was presented to him by coach Mitchell at the teams awards banquet a few years ago. “It made me feel good that I could help someone else.”

There’s one other thing to mention. Jar-rett does all of this as a volunteer and does not receive compensation for his efforts. “Everything you see here, those large cases, all that equipment, the Bulldog trailer, all of that, I purchased for the program.” That is dedication, commitment and passion. All of the things coaches preach to each student that play sports. The way Jarrett sees it,

actions speak louder than words and success in life is measured in many ways, not just by wins and losses. With more of us focusing on what we can do for others and less of what others can do for us, we can all make this community a little bit better. More importantly, just as Jarrett does, we can all make a difference in someone else’s life. Just ask the 1,200 kids Jarrett has worked with the past 14 years.

HappyThanksgiving!

Some things you may not know about Thanksgiving...A Short HistoryIn 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wam-panoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Interesting Facts & Traditions It was not until 1941, that congress de-clared Thanksgiving as a national holiday. It was declared to be the fourth Thursday in November.

The Plymouth Pilgrims dined with the Wam-panoag Indians for the First Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted over 3 days.

In October of 1777 all 13 colonies celebrat-ed Thanksgiving for the first time; however it was a one-time affair commemorating a victory over the British at Saratoga. Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and break-ing the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead. Turducken, a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken, is becoming more popular for Thanksgiving (originated in Lou-isiana). A turducken is a de-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed with a small de-boned chicken. The cavity of the chicken and the rest of the gaps are filled with, at the very least, a highly seasoned breadcrumb mixture (although some versions have a different stuffing for each bird). Every President since Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day. But in 1939, 1940 and

1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in No-vember to lengthen the holiday shopping season. This upset people. Fifty percent of Americans put the stuffing inside the Turkey. Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey. More than 40 million green bean casseroles are served on Thanksgiving. Contrary to popular belief, Native Americans did not eat cranberries. They did, however, find them extremely useful for dying fabric and decorating pottery. A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.

New study shows 1 in 20 Idaho high school students live with their grandparents.

According to the 2010 US census, one in every 20 Idaho children are being raised by their grandparents. Comparatively, the amount of grand-children being raised by grandparents has increased by 64 percent, now an estimated 6.7 million people. Many Sandpoint High School students are aware of what it’s like being a part of that 6.7 million.

For whatever reason, less traditional parenting is on the rise, though senior Anthony Sekona-Coulter doesn’t no-tice anything less then ordinary about it.

“I have a strong relationship with my grandparents, we share a lot of com-mon interests, and they’re kind of new-age, so there isn’t any culture gap.” Sekona has said his grandpar-ents played a very significant part in raising him, and the somewhat untra-ditional parenting seemed normal to him.

Though many kids find the under-standing between their grandparents and them to be unaffected by a culture gap, some students notice a change in thinking at times .

One time, I needed a haircut and my grandpa suggested using a bowl, completely serious!” said sophomore Amberly Ashley, who has also had ex-perience with grandparent parenting. “I notice a difference in music. I’ll be listening to my music and my grandpa

will ask what it is and my grandma would say it’s what the kids are listen-ing to.” Nationally, the census has cited many reasons why the grandpar-ents switch roles, generally owing to mental stress, financial troubles and substance abuse. However, many more reasons exist depending on the particular family situation.

There are programs all over the nation designed to seek out and supports grandparents raising their grandchil-dren. One program in particular, the Grandparents as Parents (GAP) group based in Treasure Valley, Idaho is aimed at supporting grandparents all over the state.

HammerDuring a home renovation, my grandfather was watching me drive in nails.

“You hammer like lightning,” he said.

“Really?” I replied, flattered.

“You never strike the same place twice.”

Interstate InspirationFour guys are driving across country to-gether: one from Idaho, one from Nebraska, one from Florida and one from New York.

A short way down the road, the man from Idaho starts to pull potatoes from his bag and throws them out the window.

The man from Iowa turns to him and asks, “What the heck are you doing?”

The man from Idaho says, “We have so many of these things in Idaho they’re lying around on the ground. I’m sick of looking at them!”

A few miles down the road, the man from Nebraska begins pulling ears of corn from his bag and throwing them out the window.

The man from Florida asks, “What are you doing that for?”

The Nebraskan replies, “We have so many of these things in Nebraska, I’m sick of looking at them!”

Inspired by the others, the man from Florida opens the car door and pushes the New Yorker out.

Highest NumberRecently while we were eating lunch after church one Sunday, my youngest son asked me what the highest number I had ever counted up to was.

I said I didn’t know. Then I asked him how high he has counted.

“5,372,” came the prompt reply.

“Oh,” I said. “Why did you stop there?”

“The sermon was over.”

Engineer HusbandA wife says to her engineer husband, “Could you please go to the store for me and buy a carton of milk. And if they have eggs, get six.”

A short time later the husband comes back with six cartons of milk. The wife asks, “Why the heck did you buy six cartons of milk?”

“They had eggs.”

Shrinking PatientA man rushed into the doctor’s office and shouted, “Doctor! I think I’m shrinking!”

The doctor calmly responded, “Now, settle down. You’ll just have to be a little patient.”

Pizza DeliveryI deliver pizza to help cover my college tuition. Once I called on customers who sent their seven-year-old son to pay me. As he approached the screen door, I noticed he was carrying a check in one hand and two dollars in the other, which I assumed was my tip.

To my dismay, he pocketed the bills before handing me the check, which was for the exact cost of the pizza.

“Could that have been a tip?” I asked, trying not to sound accusatory.

“Yep,” he replied proudly. “Not bad for just a walk from the living room and back!”
