The annual San Diego Hall of Champions awards event, held in No-vember, recognized coaches and administrators from across the county for their performance during the 2010 – 2011 school year.

Our very own Pete Stogsdill, Director of Coaching (younger girls) received honors as Coach of the Year for 2010 -2011 (HS girls soccer). The selection process was determined by the San Diego CIF soccer advisory committee. Pete is quite humble about receiving such a trib-ute, “I have been fortunate enough to coach at a school where there always seems to be a lot of good soccer players. I am honored to have been voted on by my peers as the coach of the year but know that a large part of that is because I get the opportunity to work with a lot of

talented players. I have a great coaching staff and we all work very hard to make playing soccer at the high school something to look forward to and to try and help our players make memories that will last a lifetime. We try and keep it light and fun and I think that is part of the reason why our program has been successful.” Congratulations, we’re proud of you Coach Stogsdill!

San Diego Soccer Club’s GU15 Navy team is a pretty new crew of girls that has ban to together and are off to a good season (participating in the newly formed Southern California Development League). It started with some bonding at the Cal Baptist overnight camp for older girls and continued with several fun team

events to get a group of pretty new players working and playing as a team on and off the field. A few extra practices and workouts were part of the regimen as well! They traveled to Northern California

for the Far Western Regional League on two separate week-ends and captured 2nd place in their bracket moving them into the Semis to be played at the start of the Thanksgiving break. A success-ful outcome here would automatically place the team for Nationals which would be a great stride for a team forged out of our newly merged club. This team is led by Peter Stogsdill who is one of our club directors and has also been fortunate to have back-up steady Rudy Canalas stand in for some

of the games. We are proud of the success they have enjoyed thus far and wish them well as we con-tinue to grow our club’s participation in regional and national level play.

PLAN IN ADVANCE - This starts as a freshman in high school, every class you take directly affects your NCAA eligibility. Meet with a guidance counselor as soon as possible to make sure your on the right track. Also make sure you register with NCAA by your junior year.

NETWORK NOW - Don’t wait until your senior year to start looking for recruiting opportunities. Build-ing relationships takes time if not years. Attend camps, clinics, college games and tournaments locally and away.

RESEARCH POTENTIAL SCHOOLS - This is important and will take time. You will need to do some detective work and identify who to contact, when, and how to contact them. Also, try and figure out if you fit into their program, on their team and if they have a need for your position.

MARKET YOURSELF - Make a video of your highlights and send it to coaches at colleges you have identified. You will want 10 to 15 highlight plays with an additional game half to show real-time ability. Keep the video clean and as professional looking as possible.

MAKE CONTACT - Its time now to reach out directly to the school/coach and put yourself on their “RADAR”. Start with an email or letter describing why your contacting them and what your goals are. Keep it short and to the point. Include a link to your highlight video and your recruiting resume that includes details such as stats, honors, academic data and contact information for your high school coaches should also be included.

BU17 Finalist 2011

Dear Soccer Enthusiasts,

A hearty welcome to our 7th Annual San Diego Soccer Club Presidents Cup. Our tournament is held over the Martin Luther King weekend and is a Class 1 Tournament open to USYSA and FIFA affiliated teams and AYSO registered teams. San Diego Soccer Club provides soccer experiences for all players within our community and the surrounding communities of Rancho Penasquitos, Poway, 4S Ranch, Escondido, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Valley and other parts of San Diego County. We have fostered a friendly kids first environment within our club and have wonderful competitive relationships with all of our soccer neighbors. We look forward to your participation during the weekend of January 14-15, 2012, and feel free to e-mail, call or ask any of our tournament staff for information about our tournament rules, our surrounding eateries and many wonderful attractions.

I also want to mention that we will provide an MVP award at the Boys and Girls U-11 age group -- the Brian Rudge Memorial Award -- in honor of one of our most dedicated youth soccer coaches who passed away just over six years ago. Brian was an avid Manchester United supporter and an inspiration as a youth soccer coach within our community.

Each player and coach will receive a tournament pin. Finalist players and coaches will receive a medallion and each first place team will receive a championship T-shirt and trophy. For planning purposes, all out-of-state teams are guaranteed entry.

It is our sincere hope that you have a wonderful tournament experience and good luck on the field.

Keep on kicking,

BU17 Finalist 2011PQ Premier BU17 SeaSon ComeS to an end PQ Premier BU17 Red managed to continue their soccer season for another round at the US Youth Soccer National President’s Cup finals in Des Moines, Iowa on July 7-10, 2011. The PQ Premier BU17 team, coached by Seamus McFadden, went to the tournament representing Region IV to meet up against the winners of Region 1 - TSC FC Towamencin EPA , Region 2 - Indiana Invaders Black and Region III - Arkansas Rush Nike 94B. The games were intense and kept the parents in attendance and back home in San Diego on the edge of their seats scoring last minutes goals to keep their hopes alive for a chance to play for the title. PQ Premier played their first game against the Arkansas Rush Nike 94B. First half remained scoreless with many opportunities by PQ Premier. Seven minutes into the second half, Arkansas Rush puts the ball in the net to go up 1-0. PQ Premier answers with the equalizer one minute later. Goal scored by James Haley. Game ended in a 1-1 tie. Second game matches PQ Premier against TSC FC Towamencin out of East Pennsylvania. The battle is on....TSC scores early in the 1st half and maintains the lead for the majority of the game. Miraculously, PQ Pre-mier finds a way to tie the game with seconds left in regulation play off a corner kick by Ryan Camara and a stealthy finish by Jonathon Perez who sneaks one past the keeper. GOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! PQ Premier finishes with 1-1 tie against a strong TSC team. Into the final game of bracket play, PQ Premier takes on the Indiana Invaders. The game is scoreless until PQ Premier pulls out another goal in the last minute of play of the 2nd half to pull off a 1-0 win. The win guaran-tees PQ Premier is playing for the National President’s Cup title. Goal by Torrey DeArmas. The championship game pairs up PQ Premier and TSC Towamencin. PQ Premier looks forward to the chal-lenge and has come to play. The bigger, stronger TSC teams has also come to play. A few disadvantages in the 1st half and PQ Premier is down 2-0. PQ Premier managed to possess the ball and dominate the game yet they were unable to capitalize and score some goals. Game ended with TSC winning over PQ Premier 2-0. PQ Premier finishes it’s season as National President’s Cup Finalists! No small feat considering how many games these boys played to get the Final 4 and represent the Western Region IV. Congratulations to all the players and coaches for a job well done! We are proud of all this team has accomplished!!! Way to represent San Diego, CalSouth and our club, San Diego Soccer Club!

Soccer and vacation merged this past July when a GU14 team from San Diego Soccer Club and their families boarded a plane bound for Gothia Cup – The Youth World Soccer Tournament. The trip, which was the brainchild of Raffi Ruotolo, Director of Coaching (Girls) for San Diego Soccer Club, consisted of a week participating in a soccer tournament while visiting Sweden and nearby Denmark and a week sprinting through various notable cities in Italy.

Upon landing in Goteburg, Sweden the rambunctious crew of 48 (kids and parents) were greeted with a welcom-ing torrential downpour, not a good start to a highly anticipated voyage. The downpour symbolically cleared to what transpired into an unimaginable journey that spanned countries, cultures and customs.

Gothia Cup, billed as the world’s largest and most international youth soccer tournament consisted of over 1600 teams from 70 nations. More than 4000 games were played at over 100 fields. Opening ceremonies attracted 52,000 spectators which easily rivaled any Olympic opening day ceremonies across the board. It was without a doubt a memory that is permanently etched in the minds of all 48 travelers.

The GU14 team and their families travelled on busses and trams all over Goteburg to play in games against teams from various other nations. The girls played some impressive soccer, winning 5 games and not allowing a single goal. This performance earned them a spot in the round of 16 (out of 84 teams in their bracket), finally falling to a rather fiery Italian team in PK’s. Each and every game was a new experience and even though the defeat was difficult to accept, the girls felt good about their performance. Besides the loss ushered in the opportunity for a train ride to DENMARK!

The team also performed well here in the US winning the Manchester Cup tournament in June, beating high ranked West Coast in the final. They then made it two for two with another Championship at Pegasus Cup. In late August, the team participated in the West Coast Futbol Classic tournament, reaching the finals - again after beating opponents such as West Coast, FC Legends, Slammers, and Colorado Edge, all high ranked teams both in Southern California and in the Country. The girls lost in the finals to a very strong National Champion team, Arsenal.

Here is what Coach Raffi had to say, “It was an amazing weekend (WCFC) and an amazing summer for the team. This team has come a long way from two years ago and are playing some great soccer. The girls and parents are an awesome group of people and we are looking forward to bigger and greater things to come”.

STRIKERS ….READY… SET…POWER!!!

If you can get your strikers to lose their markers and explode onto passes, they will be able to put more power into their shots and cause chaos in the opposition defence. Show them how to do this with the help of this acceleration soccer drill.

Accelerating into the Shot When you think of the top goal scorers, they all have the ability to lose their marker and accelerate onto through passes. It is that acceleration which gives them the extra power on the shot to blast it into the net. And that takes practice. Get your forwards accelerating onto passes to help them hit unstoppable shots into the net.

Advanced Shooting - Through Pass and ShootYou must get your forwards to stay outside the box until the ball is played and then explode onto the ball for the shot.

Soccer Drill to Practice the Skills: >> Set up the drill, as in the diagram, using three forwards and a goalkeeper. >> Player A plays ball to Player B, with player A following his pass to receive the ball back short from player B. >> Player A then plays a diagonal ball to Player C, who touches the ball sideways to Player B. >> Player C makes a run as if he was losing his marker, staying outside the box until Player B plays a ball into the box for player C to run onto. >> Players follow their passes (A goes to B, B to C, C to A.)

Extend the soccer drillAdd a defender once your forward grasps it.

Get Your SKILLS on!
