In-Home Care Agencies: Choosing the Right One

By: Bruce Weaver, MPA, PA-CPresident & CEOAAging Better In-Home Care

As people become frail with age or face de-bilitating diseases, it’s common for them toneed some help around the home so that they can continue to get by living on their own. In the past, the only option many seniors or disabled individuals had was moving to a nursing home, something that can be extremely traumatic (and expensive) for people who have to uproot their entire lives. That’s why in-home care has become so popular today. It’s convenient, safe and typically far less expensive than a full-time nursing facility. And virtually everyone wants the comfort of staying in their own home as they age.

Because it’s becoming such a popular option today, it’s important to determine whichagency may be best for you or your loved one. Begin the search by talking with thelocal Area Agency on Aging (AAA). AAA has offices in Coeur d’Alene and another in Sandpoint. Both can be reached at 1-800-786-5536 and will provide you with a listing of the agencies serving North Idaho. Com-

panies can also be found by searching online. Putting in “Home Care” in the search field (along with North Idaho) will bring up virtu-ally all of the agencies listed in the area and these can be checked against the list provided by AAA .

In-home care often involves services such as house cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, assistance with medications, assistance with bathing and getting dressed. Or in somecases, a disabled individual may need skilled nurs-ing care provided by RNs or LPNs. It’s important to know the difference in what agencies are capable of because there’s no sense in paying for expensive nursing care if all you need is simple help with keeping the house clean or doing the laundry. Not all agencies have nurses on staff.

In the end, choosing the right care for you or your loved ones is all about finding a respon-sive agency with a skilled office management team, one with the correct mix ofservices and the right caregivers for you or your loved ones’ particular needs. With theright match, you or your loved ones can expe-rience the benefits of cost, comfort andsafety that make in-home care such a valuable and important option today.

Stir Up Some FunOne night while he was manning the drive-thru, a customer told him that the Intercom wasn’t working properly. My friend’s son went about filling the order while a female co-worker fiddled with the intercom.

She asked, “Is that okay now?”

“Well, no,” the customer replied. “Now you sound like a girl.”
