Catholic and Cornered Answers to Common Questions about our faith

Do Catholics believe the Bible is the Word of God?

The answer: The Bible is the Word of God, given for our instruction.

Like our Protestant sisters and brothers, Catholics believe that Jesus is the Word of God made flesh (John 1) and that his presence on earth continues through the Body of Christ—his Church (1 Corinthians 12:12-28) For this reason, it is not hard for Catholics to accept that the books of the Bible were collected during the first centuries of Christianity and came into existence through the life of the Church. Today’s Bible came together in the fourth and fifth centuries as a definitive collection of sacred texts through the considered opinions of the Church councils. It did not come to us whole from heaven, but through human history and through authors inspired by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we don’t separate our reverence of Scripture from our conviction that the Holy Spirit has guided the Church through the centuries. We call this inseparable dimension of God’s guiding presence. (Kenneth L Parker)

MINISTRY MINUTES FROM ROBIN BLACK-RUBENSTEIN

In John’s Gospel, Jesus is speaking to the crowds at Capernaum. We learn that it is God’s will that everyone believe in Jesus, and therefore have eternal life. Belief in Jesus is more than the words we speak, but the way that we live our lives in imitation of Jesus. Just like Jesus, we can choose to set aside our own will and let God’s will work within us. Our lives are a series of days that are filled with decisions. We have some things that we cannot control or change, like the weather, some illnesses, and the fact that each day we grow older. Letting Jesus’ will work in us can be as simple as smiling at someone we meet, helping out someone who needs it, and recognizing the sacredness and dignity of all people. One method that Catholics use to guide us in helping others is the “Works of Mercy”. We have the spiritual works and the corporal works. Two of the spiritual works of mercy are comforting the sorrowful and praying for the living and the dead. On all souls day, we are reminded that we have the opportunity to do this every day. In comforting the sorrowful, it is good to be aware that there is no set time frame. Grief is as individual as your fingerprint and your soul. In last week’s column, I listed the first five commonly held myths and misconceptions about grief and the facts that dispel them. Here are the remaining:

6) Grief occurs in orderly, predictable stages. Greif and mourning are highly individualized, according to our own unique personality and life experiences, as well as the nature of our relationship with the deceased, how the death happened, our support system, and our culture and cultural background. 7) Tears are a sign of weakness. In fact, crying at the death of a close loved one is a normal human response that is universal and occurs across cultures throughout the world. Crying helps us to release toxins and tensions associated with the stress that occurs within us. 8) Medication is necessary for relieving the pain, anxiety and depression associated with grief. Grief is not an illness to be cured, and the emotions attached to it are normal. Medication may be indicated in some cases, but the work of mourning still needs to take place. The symptoms of grief also serve as signals to others that we are in need of their compassion, patience and understanding. 9) Most people recover from grief and eventually return to normal. Grief is not an illness from which we will recover; rather, it is a gradual process of transformation. Life has changed and a new normal must be found. 10) Time heals all wounds, and eventually grief comes to an end. Grief is an adaptive response that is not bound by time. It never really ends; we don’t “get over” grief. It is something we learn to live with over time, as we gradually adjust to the physical absence of the one who has died. Grief softens and erupts less frequently as time goes on, but it can revisit us at any time, and in varying intensity, whenever we are reminded of our loss. 11) Those who mourn are weak in their faith. Grief often brings on a crisis in faith because a significant loss challenges all of our basic beliefs about the nature and fairness of the universe, or even the very nature and existence of God. Others turn more fervently towards faith. It is a time when unconditional love, patience, and compassion are needed as the mourner finds their way and mourns in the manner that is best for them.

Missing My Mom and Drawing Comfort from the Lighting of a Candle

When Fr. Jeff lights the candles in remembrance of those souls who have died since last November at our Masses this weekend, one of those candles will be for my mom. Dolores B. Corbett (Mom) died on January 12, 2014 and during this year, I have missed her in many ways and in varying degrees. Submitting her name for the All Souls Day Mass was one of those intense times of missing her. At the same time it was a time to remember all of the comforting hope that our faith and its symbols give us.

Our candles are very symbolic and are powerful in their symbolism. The candles at the sides of the altar symbolize Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. When one candle appears on each side of the altar, the two natures of Christ, divine and human, are emphasized. As Father Jeff is lighting the candles, we remember those who have died during this past year and we should offer a prayer. I will thank God for the blessing that my mother was to me. I will ask our Lord to remit any Purgatory time she may have and to bring her swiftly into his arms. The lighted candles will visualize my prayer and then keep vigil in our Church during the time that I am not physically present. The candle lit for mom will be joined with all the other candles lit for those being remembered and together they will be a brilliant and tangible sign of the prayers of the community. Be sure to add your prayers to the prayers being offered for the souls of all who have died in the past year. ~ Deacon Dan

Always Evergreen Gift Shop Inspiration for Any Occasion

Located in the St. Boniface Parish Office Monday ~ Friday 9 a.m.—3:30 p.m.

A Spirituality of Stewardship Karl Rabeder lives an opulent lifestyle. He has a talent for making and spending money. He's been blessed with all the worldly possessions most people could imagine. He has a villa overlooking the Alps, an $850,000 farmhouse, gliders, expensive cars and a fortune worth about five million dollars. But he's trying to get rid of it all. Mr. Rabeder says that while vacationing with his wife in Hawaii it hit him how soulless his five-star lifestyle was. He felt like everyone around him was acting and it prevented him from knowing real people. On gliding trips to South America and South Africa he had the nagging feeling that there must be a connection between his wealth and the poverty around him. This feeling of injustice that he felt eventually prompted him to downsize until there was nothing left and it has given him a sense of freedom that he never had when he was surrounded by luxury. The Bible and the Catholic Church teaches that the goods of the earth are meant for all mankind, not just for those who can afford them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that the, “goods of creation are destined for the whole human race.” And that the “appropriation of property is legitimate for guaranteeing the freedom and dignity of persons and for helping each of them to meet his basic needs and the needs of those in his charge.” This doesn't necessarily mean that people are called to give away all that they have. It means that people who have been blessed (and who in America has not been blessed?) have a moral obligation to use their treasures for the betterment of those around them. This article brought to you by “Aquinas and Catholic Goods” written by James Rutherford.
