Regulations for the Lenten Season

~Abstinence: Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

~Fast: Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed.

To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time In order to be a true follower of Jesus, we must let go of the security of an earthly life and place our lives into the hands of the Lord. This daunting challenge can be met

by remaining firm in our faith and belief that Jesus has saved us and opened the way to eternal life in heaven. We can rely

upon the Lord to be our strength.

Dear Parishioners,

As I reflect on our Catholic Schools’ Week, I feel even more blessed to be a part of St. Boniface parish. I love to worship with a faith-filled community and to see our families living their faith in a real way!

It’s hard to believe that we begin Lent this week. St. Boniface School will pray the Stations of the Cross weekly on Fridays, as in the past. However, on Friday, February 12, we will pray the Stations at 1 p.m. (instead of 2 p.m.) so that the classes can celebrate our Valentine’s Parties at 1:45 p.m. Please come pray with us if you would like.

Our students will NOT be attending Mass this Tuesday. Students will attend All-School Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 10 and Thursday, February 11.

Our 4th grade girls will scrimmage during halftime of the SIUE basketball game on Wednesday, February 10. Tickets are discounted to $3.00 for parents and their guests.

Peace & All Good,

MINISTRY MINUTES

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

In the last few bulletins I have been sharing details of some of the upcoming faith formation opportunities and tying them to our scriptures. It is a challenge sometimes to give information and the benefits of the programs we have here at St. Boniface in a briefly worded pitch. People sometimes hesitate to sign up for a program and give up time when they are unsure of the content or context of a program. I hope the articles have helped answer some questions about some of those programs. Please know that you can always contact me at the parish office, by email, phone, or at Mass anytime.

In the second reading from 1 Corinthians, Paul begins by reminding the people of Corinth of the importance of what he had taught them. He emphasizes that what he teaches was handed down to him from the apostles and that he was given the privilege to share the gospel through God’s Grace. Richard Rohr wrote that “Everything is Grace. Grace is what God does to keep all things God has made in love, alive forever.” In the Gospel from Luke, just like in the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, Jesus’ presence with Peter and the others creates an over-abundance of fish where before there had been none. Jesus tells Simon (Peter), “Do not be afraid.” It is by sharing our faith with others that they can understand how God’s Grace has been working in our lives and in theirs. When we share these gifts, they are multiplied. One gift (Grace) becomes many. Consider ways that you can share your faith or listen to the stories of Grace (Love) in other peoples lives.

King David’s Glance

In the Book of Samuel we are told of how King David sinned. While standing on the roof of his palace, he glanced in the direction of Bethsheba, who was preparing to take a bath. King David’s glance became a look, became a desire, became an adultery from which pregnancy resulted and, finally, King David would arrange for a man to be killed in battle to prevent him from finding out that the king had an affair with his wife. It all started with a glance.

I think that the most important point of this cautionary tale is that it did indeed start with a glance. In all of the sins that you and I commit, there is a starting point. It may well be a glance or a word or a thought, but it starts small and quickly reaches a decision point. In our path to holiness we are confronted with making decisions that turn us toward our Lord or away from our Lord. It happens daily! We must be prepared to have the discipline and the awareness that there is a choice to be made and that choice is to choose God.

Lent starts this coming Wednesday and we enter into this special time of prayer and fasting and almsgiving to strengthen ourselves for those daily battles with temptation when we are confronted with a decision arising from a glance or a word or a thought; when we are choosing to stay on the path to holiness or to stray away from our Lord.

The intensity of Lent lasts only for forty days, but the impact of Lent can remain with us for the rest of the year. Take a few moments to decide what extra prayer, what extra denial (fasting) and what act of mercy to support (almsgiving) during this Lent. Those Lenten practices will help you to arrive at Easter full of joy for the promise of our risen Lord and with added discipline for working on your holiness for the rest of the year. ~Deacon Dan

Help Bake Cookies for Police & Firefighters

Attention: all students in Grades 6-8!!! Tower Teens will be baking cookies for our local police and firefighters. Come ready to bake (and sample cookies!), on Sunday, February 21 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. We will meet in the Acorn Room. All are welcome!

A mother and daughter duo, Dr. Shawna Heddinghaus of Fireside Eye Care in Benld, IL and her 13 year old daughter Lily, recently travelled to Cap-Haitien, Haiti for a week long medical mission trip. A team of 5 volunteers and 4 doctors supporting OPTOMETRY GIVING SIGHT and VOSH travelled with their portable instruments and performed 1,668 eye exams in 5 days. The entire country of Haiti with a population of over 10 million only has 3 full time practicing optometrists. As you can imagine the team was greeted by long lines of patients each morning as they set up their make-shift clinics.

The people of Haiti nearly all suffer from itchy, dry eyes because of the intense dust, wind and sun exposure. All of the team’s supplies of artificial tears, allergy drops and sunglasses were given out through the week. They dispensed 1,000's of eyeglasses to patients who have never had the chance to see life clearly. Simply providing improved vision will allow many Haitians to return to productive lives in support of their families or allow children to keep up with their classmates in school. Also, the team referred over 175 people for cataract, glaucoma and diabetic eye surgeries. There is only one surgery center in Cap-Haitien that is supported by volunteer surgeons.

Lily, a 7th grader at St. Boniface School in Edwardsville, IL took an interest in this type of mission work and spent her days off school training in her mother's office for 6 months. She learned how to check vision, eye pressures and instill eye drops. Although the days were extremely long, she particularly enjoyed checking the children's eyes and spent time at the end of each day playing and singing with the Haitian children.

WORLD YOUTH DAY PILGRIMAGE 2016 ~ Krakow, Poland

For the past year & a half, you have been hearing about our pilgrimage to World

Youth Day 2016 and supporting our fund-raising activities. We are so grateful for all of your generosity! We frequently are asked how much more we have to raise. The total cost of the trip for the group is $33,584. To date, through fundraising, generous

donations, and payments made from each participating family, we have raised $25,913.16, which leaves $7,670.84.

A HUGE “Thank You” to all of you for your support and to those who have donat-

ed. We wouldn’t be this far without your help!

If you would like to help us reach our goal, donations may be dropped off at the Parish Office or placed in the Sunday collection. Please mark “WYD” in the check memo.

May God bless you!

Thank you for your support!

Thank you for your support of St. Boniface Catholic Church. Make your contributions to the church even easier by taking advantage of our online giving option. Setting up your account is easy; you can set it up online through our website www.st-boniface.com, or complete a form and turn it in to the Parish Office to Robin Hake’s attention. Please help close our

year-to-date deficit gap!

St. Boniface appreciates your gifts to the church. We would like to suggest some ways to make your gift giving easier: • Easy and convenient! EFT is an automatic withdrawal

from your checking account on a monthly basis. There are no service fee charges! All we need is a copy of your cancelled check and your authorization form for an amount to be given automatically. Once a month giving is as easy as paying your light bill!

• Traditional weekly contribution envelopes provided by the church. This allows us to give you credit for the gifts you give to the church. We have no way to credit anonymous gifts of cash.

• Are you visiting or have not yet registered? We will send you a thank you letter for your contribution (if you give by check) that can be used for tax purposes. Cash donations are more difficult unless a name and address are included with the gift.

All gifts to St. Boniface are tax deductible!

Stewardship

What we know and understand as Church more or less begins with today’s Gospel reading from St. Luke. Jesus calls His first disciples — His first Apostles. Luke tells us of the miracle that occurred for St. Peter and the others in their fishing boat. At the Lord’s command, they cast their nets after a time of catching nothing, and “they caught a great number of fish.”

Note Peter’s reaction, however. He falls to his knees and implores Jesus, “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man.” St. Peter is astonished and amazed, and he is, quite frankly, afraid of what he has just experienced. We may sometimes react to the Lord’s calling in a similar way. It is a bit overwhelming and frightening to come to the realization that we, too, are called, and that the Lord has expectations of us.

Yet, this is how what we know as the Church began. It commenced with Jesus calling simple fishermen according to our Gospel. These, of course, then developed into twelve, then hundreds, then thousands, and now millions upon millions of those called to be disciples. We are among that throng. When Luke speaks of “following,” he is talking about discipleship. We are called to be stewards and disciples, but are we willing to “leave everything and follow Him?”
