Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ + Reflection
Jesus was obedient to the Father, and suffered death on the cross. Before he did this, Jesus established and sealed the New Covenant. The Lord Jesus shed his blood for us so that we could have hope of eternal redemption. During the Last Supper, Christ spoke of the blood of the covenant. We are
reminded of this covenant every time we gather to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Summertime Mass Attire
Summertime might be a good time for casual attire. But it would be a good rule of thumb to keep in mind that
beach attire is not church attire! Common sense rules of modesty apply
to our attire worn at Mass.

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein
The Gospel today is Mark recounting the Passover Meal of Jesus and the apostles the night before he sacrificed his life on the cross for the remission of our sins. In that culture, if one shared a meal with another, it implied that the participants would be responsible for and take care of each other because of their shared common status, meal sharing and so forth. We celebrate the Eucharist every Sunday, but sometimes it is very easy to lose sight of the fact that the Eucharist is the fulfillment of thousands of years of covenants and promises by Yahweh to Adam and Eve, Noah, Abram, the patriarchs, Moses, the prophets and so many more. We have the privilege to live those covenant promises in our daily lives. The meal we share in community each and every time we attend Mass is a reminder that we are not in the mission of Jesus’ work alone. It is a shared responsibility. We all have something to contribute. Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche communities for people with developmental disabilities and a Canadian Catholic philosopher, theologian and humanitarian wrote, “One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence and inner healing.” In little acts of self-giving throughout our daily lives we change hearts, ours and those around us. Our sharing in the Eucharist gives us a common mission to go out together and care for others in the example that Jesus set forth for us.

Conversations with the Holy Spirit
Last Sunday’s (5/31/15) celebration of the mystery of the Holy Trinity brought to mind a recent conversation I had with a priest whose advice I had sought out concerning my seemingly moribund spiritual life.
He asked me to describe my spiritual life and I said I was faithful to my obligation to say morning and evening prayers and that I tried to attend at least one Mass a week beyond my Sunday Mass. He said you have just described your prayer life and I asked you about your spiritual life. I told him that since my ordination I had developed a relationship with the Holy Spirit wherein I would frequently turn to the Holy Spirit and request help in preparing for homilies and liturgies and then trust that that help would be given. Also, that I would remember to offer a prayer of thanks (most of the time) for the help I had received.
Father then asked me about any other conversations I might have had with the Holy Spirit and I had none to offer. He then said – so you turn to the Holy Spirit for help when you need it and then ignore his presence in your heart until, of course, the next time you need more help. Do you call that developing a close relationship?
I immediately understood his point and set out to develop a closer relationship with the Holy Spirit. I now share my joys and sorrows; my frustrations and fears; and my hopes for family members and parishioners. I am in conversation with the Holy Spirit. I still need to learn how to listen more carefully for the Holy Spirit’s side of this conversation and I will still turn to the Holy Spirit seeking the help and insight that I need but it will be an ongoing relationship and not my relating on an “as needed” basis.
I believe that this is the approach we should try to take with all Persons in the Holy Trinity and, when I have learned how to relate more closely with the Holy Spirit, I am going to say hello to God the Father.
Are you in conversation with your God?

CONGRATULATIONS
A HUGE “Congratulations” to Chrissy Glinn and Andrew Serfas who are both active members of our Teen Choir here at St. Boniface.
Chrissy, a student at Fr. McGivney Catholic High School and daughter of Daniel & Michele Glinn, was selected to perform in Youth Sing Praise!, a musical ensemble of 43 talented teens from across the country to be held at the Outdoor Amphitheatre at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. The group will present an original musical, “Just Pretend,” on Saturday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. For more information, visit www.youthsingpraise.com.
Andrew, a student at Marquette University and son of Brad & Katie Serfas, was chosen for the second year in a row to serve as one of 21 participants in the College Ministerial Internship Program at Saint Meinrad Seminary & School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana. This is a 6-week summer internship for college-age students. Interns come from throughout the United States to be formed in Benedictine spirituality for ministry in the Catholic Church and taught by monks and faculty of St. Meinrad Archabbey and its Seminary and School of Theology. The interns serve as staff, catechists, and theological reflection group leaders for the “One Bread One Cup” summer liturgical leadership conferences for high school youth that St. Boniface participates in every year.
This is just some of the great things our young adults are doing here at St. Boniface Parish. Congratulations, Chrissy & Andrew! Thank you for letting your light shine & living out the mission of the Church.

Stewardship in Today’s Gospel
At the center of all our Masses is the Eucharist. Naturally the readings on this Sunday focus on the importance of and the centrality of the Eucharist in the Church. The first reading from the Book of Exodus speaks of the people’s Covenant with God. As Moses is the defining force behind this covenant, it is most often called the Mosaic Covenant. However, having a covenant with the Lord is not quite enough. Although the people agreed to it, it required more from them than simple agreement. Each of us has a Covenant with the Lord also. However, living out that covenant can be a challenge for us. We often speak of stewardship, and indeed that commitment to stewardship is a real indication of our covenant with God. Nevertheless, we must live it out through actions for it to be fully effective.
St. Paul, in his letter to the Hebrews, our second reading, refers to a new covenant. “For this reason He (Jesus Christ) is the mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.” This new covenant comes to us through Christ’s sacrifice for us. Paul refers to Jesus’ sacrifice as being “unblemished” or perfect. It is this perfect sacrifice which brings us salvation and which we commemorate through the Eucharist at every Mass. It is perfect in the sense that it was voluntary, rational, and completely motivated by love. As we approach the Eucharist, we need to think of all of this, and in humility we receive the real body and blood of Christ. Then we are expected to take that gift and live it out among those in our families, our communities, and our workplaces with the same love that motivated it.
Our Gospel reading from Mark recounts the Last Supper, which was also their Passover meal. At the Passover meal it was traditional for the head of the family (in this case Jesus) to lift the bread and to say something to the effect “This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let everyone who hungers come and eat; let everyone who is needy come and eat the Passover meal.” Jesus, in the act of establishing the Eucharist, takes that tradition and passes it entirely through Himself, the Lamb of God. He gives everything a new meaning, the meaning that we recognize on this Feast of Corpus Christi. Jesus says “Take it; this is my body.” The Eucharist is not forced upon us; it is something we freely “take” but it is also something that we must receive and we must act upon our reception of it. Jesus calls us to eat of His Body and Blood as a sign of our new Covenant with God. As Catholics we need to never forget that according to our Catechism “the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.” (#1324)

Vacation Bible School July 20-24
Children who will be in grades K-5 this fall are encouraged to have a fun filled week at SonSparks Lab VBS. The fun begins each morning at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12 noon in the church. We’ll learn about God’s love through bible stories, songs, games and some really cool science experiments!! Snacks are provided each day. Cost for parishioners is $20 per child and $25 per child for non-parishioners. We are looking for volunteers, both adult and young people who are interested in helping with VBS. (This is a great opportunity for Confirmation service hours for our 8th graders!) For more information or to volunteer please email Barbara Stamer at [email protected]. Deadline for registration is July 13 by mail or drop off at the parish office. Registration forms are available on the parish web site or at the parish office.
