Jubilee Year of Mercy

“My best wishes and congratulations to all of you on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of St. Martin’s Parish in Sunnyvale. Although I was only in residence there for a very short time from 1996 to 1997, I felt very much at home and really enjoyed celebrating the Mass and other Sacraments with you, the wonderful, faithful people, and my time to be with great priests as well with Fr. Benito Manding and those retired who also assisted us… I pray for all of you as your beautiful parish family has reached this milestone in the histo-ry of the San Jose Diocese, which I still consider a home as well.” - Bishop Richard Garcia, Diocese of Monterey “Thank you (Mr. Holthaus) for keeping me informed about the Centennial of Saint Martin Catholic Church in Sunnyvale, California. I hope that the celebrations reminded everyone of the goodness of Almighty God and the many blessings received and imparted over the past one hundred years... Please assure the Pastor and all of the faithful of my good wishes. I am sure that Bishop McGrath also joined in the rejoicing for this im-portant anniversary.” - Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Archdiocese for the Military Services. “(St. Martin’s) parish and school family were most kind and generous with their time and talents. We had dedicated pastors, assistant pastors, sister teachers and lay teachers who taught the 4R’s... We had supportive parents, secretaries, and librarians. The Janitor’s family kept a spic and span school. Altogether, we lived out the of (spiritual, physical, intellectual, cultural and social) in our daily lives… We will keep all of you in our love and prayers for all the many kindnesses that you have shared with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita, Kansas these many years.” - Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita, Kansas “The Sisters of the Holy Family had a continuous presence at St. Martin’s from 1926 through 1974, and I am happy to say that I was a part of that presence in the later years. At least 45 of our Sisters served at St. Martin’s, and three young women entered the Sisters of the Holy Family from the parish. They say the first 100 years is the hardest—I’m not sure that’s true, but we wish you all blessings for your current celebration and for your next hundred years!” - Sister Gladys Guenther, SHF, Congregational President of Sisters of the Holy Family

“As the parish community of Saint Martin Church celebrates the 100th Anniversary of its establishment, I am delighted for this opportunity to convey to all of you my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. In expressing my congratulations on this momentous occasion... I wish also to express my sincere thanks to you for the loyalty, the generosity, and the commitment that you have demonstrated as parishioners and friends of Saint Martin’s Parish.” - Bishop Patrick J. McGrath, Diocese of San Jose

- Các Nữ tu St. Joseph of Wichita, Kansas.

GOD'S HEALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Mala-chi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God's healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That's a pretty comforting notion--especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It's the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and perse-vere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere--in faith, this time--and our lives will be secure in God re-gardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright (c) J. S. Bishop Jaime Soto, President of the California Catholic Conference, issued the following statement on behalf of his fellow Bishops in California: Animosity and hyperbole has characterized the current election season. This should give all people pause. The natural and healthy exchange of ideas, critical to our democratic system has devolved into anger, intolerance and increasing alienation. This current polarization hampers the advancement of the common good, which is one of the ultimate goals of all prudent governance. The common good – “the sum total of social con-ditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily” (Gaudium et Spes, 26.) – requires cooperation and mutual respect. It requires that all be given the opportunity to participate in civic activities and partake in the benefits of our society. Just a little more than one year ago, in his historic address to the U.S. Congress, Pope Fran-cis reminded us that the Golden Rule applies in political discourse, as well as in our daily life: “This Rule points us in a clear direction. Let us treat others with the same passion and com-passion with which we want to be treated. Let us seek for others the same possibilities which we seek for ourselves. Let us help others to grow, as we would like to be helped our-selves. In a word, if we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities. The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us. The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsi-bility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.” As we approach the 240th anniversary of our Republic, we remain a resilient people, with a robust system of law and deeply held religious convictions. As the Bishops of California who are pastors of our respective local Churches, we believe in the strength of our democra-cy, the ultimate decency of our people, and the persuasive power of the Christian faith. Pope Francis reminded us in his address “the challenges facing us today call for a renewal of that spirit of cooperation, which has accomplished so much good throughout the history of the United States.” The contentious campaigns have wearied and worried us. The more urgent civic endeavor of forging a stronger union, ensuring domestic as well as global tranquility, and establishing justice for all is still before us. This is the common cause and our sacred duty and mission as the disciples of Jesus. We invite all people to conscientiously participate with dignity, civility and respect for oth-ers. This may indeed be the “narrow gate “ of the Gospel of this past Wednesday, October 20, but let us do so with constant prayer, and to place our faith in Him who is our hope and our salvation.
