President Steve Morgan called the meeting to order. He shared “Happy Halloween!”

PDG Roy King lead the club in the pledge to the American flag.

PP Dave Livingston shared an inspiration with the Club. PP Dave reminded us to vote this week. He sure hopes that Nixon gets it! He is on his way to Washington D.C. for the National Nave League convention and then to see his grandchildren. He will be back in two weeks. PP Dave asked us all to vote, thank everyone who ran for office…those who won and those who lost. They spent a lot of time and money to get these positions where they will be working for us. Regardless of who wins, we should all support them as they go about serving all of us.

President Steve asked for guests to be introduced. First, he asked all Past Presidents and Past District Governors to stand and be recognized. Since we had no guests of Rotarians, all guests from outside Hawaii were asked to meet at the front of the room. PDG Phil Sammer asked Club members to sing our welcome song. Then, PP/PE Carol Riley welcomed all of our guests and asked them to introduce themselves to us: Karenne Norling from The Rotary e-club of Greater Sydney; Shel Barsanti and her husband from Mad River Rotary in McKinleyville, CA.

Announcements:

1. President Steve thanked everyone for their hard work on the IFF, Welcome Party, and Golf Tournament. He said we had a dictionary presentation today at Kalihi Waena School. He, Lisa Ahmed, PP Gloria King, and PP/PE Carol Riley passed out dictionaries to third-grade students. PP Gloria King has sent a note to everyone about the Books For Kids delivery. We still need volunteers. World Polio Day was celebrated last week at Shriner’s Hospital. There are pictures on the back table from PP Mark Moore. Rotary Gives Thanks is scheduled for November 24th. There is a Halloween party at PDG Roy and PP Gloria King’s house tonight.

2. Paul McGillicuddy reported that we will be hosting 15-20 senior citizens from the Community Center on November 21st. We will participate in a Food Bank with other Rotary Clubs on November 24th. December 1st we will be working together at Serenity Garden.

3. Lisa Ahmed shared that she has just visited Washington State. She went to two Rotary Clubs. The first was a small club and the speaker was a 65-year-old woman with autism. Lisa was the first visitor visiting that club. The second club was a large club. There were 200 people at lunch and they talked about expecting Bill Gates to be a speaker at a later meeting. Lisa won the raffle: a $50 bottle of red wine that she gave to her husband.

Lisa Ahmed walked around with the Give Aloha bucket. PP Dick Matti donated money to thank PP/PE Carol Riley for being scribe. PP Chad Adams thanked everyone who helped with the IFF golf tournament. PP Janet Scheffer gave $100 to the Foundation and $20 to Chad for all the work he did not the golf tournament. She said we are just 12 away from having 1,000 likes on our Facebook

page…and she encouraged everyone to “like” it. PP Bob Tellander said he just spent some time at the Apple store and he now has a telephone that he does not know how to use. He wanted to let us that after you are 80 years old, you can still learn new things. Patti Mitchell gave a big thank you to the IFF committee. She said November 6th is voting day and also her birthday. She said if everyone would vote that would be a great present for her. Glenn Perry said that PDG Laura Steelquist will be our guest speaker next week talking about the Rotary Foundation. He also gave $100 to Polio Plus. PDG Phil Sammer congratulated everyone on the Foodfest. PP Gail Warshawsky said that she, her husband, and two guests loved the Foodfest…great food, great band, and great auctions. Shel Barsanti thanked us for the wonderful welcome to our Club. PP Joe Gedeon said he is just back from a galaxy far, far away, his father is not feeling well and he hopes he gets him back to a meeting soon. Lisa Ahmed thanked all the IFF leaders. Sylvia Makk said she lost her Honolulu Zoo coupon she won at the Foodfest and if anyone sees it to please give it back to her. She wants to give it to her daughter. Ikko Tomita thanked everyone for welcoming our Sister Club members from Japan. They had a wonderful time. PP Gene Grounds gave a Foundation donation and said his wife bid on items at the silent auction. He is not sure what he is going to do with them. PP Dave Hamil thanked everyone for helping with the IFF, saying he things we made about $15,000. He also congratulated PP Dave Hamil for volunteering to be the IFF chairman next year! Dave said he will work with all of us and he is the co-chair for the volunteer committee of the 2020 International Convention. We are all going to be on that committee!

PP Gene Grounds introduced our speaker: Kenji Price. Kenji was chosen by President Trump to be the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Hawaii. Kenji grew up in Hawaii, has served as an officer in the U.S. Army as a former Army Ranger with two Bronze Stars.

Kenji started by telling us that he was proud to speaking to civic-minded organization. He has been on the job for nine months and is loving what he is learning. He explained that he would talk about what he does and priorities he has for the time he serves in his position.

1) As a chief law enforcer, Kenji works with federal crimes in Hawaii. He is a prosecutor. His job is to protect the community. He does not deal with State crimes. There are 26 federal prosecutors in his office and 30 staff members.

2) A: Reduce violent crimes. In Hawaii, we do not have as many as other places in the Mainland, but we have too many. Project safe neighborhoods is a program he believes in where state, federal, and local agents work together on reducing violent crimes. B. Enforce drug laws. His goal is to disrupt the flow of illegal narcotics and hold people accountable. Meth and opiods are a problem. These are epidemics on the Mainland and problems here. Kenji’s goal is to stop the spreading of these drugs. The “take-back initiative” asked people to turn in drugs that had been prescribed that they are not using. This is a good step, but more needs to be done. We need an educational push. We need to talk

WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2018

Page 3: NOVEMBER 07, 2018 SPEAKER OF THE WEEK Laura Steelquist … · 2018-11-01 · come to us, we need to look at each case individually and make decisions. I think it is important to look

about the threats and we need to work together to solve this probem. C. National security is a national priority. In Hawaii, this

is not as high of a priority as in other parts of the Mainland, but we do have times when people in our State give bad things to terrorists.

D. Sexual exploitation. We need to find abusers, hold them accountable, and prosecute them. The homeless, runaways, and young people need to be made aware of this problem, along with ways to cope.

Responses to questions:

1. The Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii is working on the drug problems. What do you think about legalized, recreational marijuana in Hawaii? I am on the law enforcement side. I do not make the laws. When cases come to us, we need to look at each case individually and make decisions. I think it is important to look at Colorado and Oregon who have been going through this for some time. The THC levels in marijuana are often so high that problems arise. I am looking for input from our citizens.

2. Is human sex trafficking a real problem in Hawaii. I have read where we have the highest numbers and I have read that we are the lowest numbers. It is a serious problem everywhere. I do not have specific numbers. Studies have been done. There is a significant problem in Hawaii with online interactions.

3. I have immigrants living in my home. Most of my family has dual citizenship. Maybe this is what we should do in our Country. We have laws that govern immigration. I am not a policy maker. I work in enforcement.

4. Rotary has 53 clubs in Hawaii and human sex trafficking is one area that we are working with. Rotary might be a good partner for you in this area. I am looking for people/groups as partners in all of these areas. It will take all of us to solve the problems.

President Steve gave Kenji Price a Four Way Test plaque. He facilitated the drawing of our lucky ticket and PP Janet Scheffer had her ticket pulled. She pulled a red marble and won a watch! We all said the Four Way Test together and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, PP/PE Carol Riley
